AQUATICS SWIM LESSONS

INDOOR The City of Mason is pleased to offer swim instruction using the updated American Red Cross aquatic program. Enrollment in the listed programs is determined by age and skill performance. Please note that participants can be registered for only one class per session. If you do not have a community center membership, please stop at the desk at the front entrance to check in on the days of your lesson. Make-up swim lessons will be scheduled only if the pool is closed for weather or maintenance. The make-up class will be on the corresponding day of the week after the last scheduled class.

As a convenience to our indoor swim lesson participants, program dates have been modified to accommodate family vacation times. Please select only one summer session. For those interested in multiple summer sessions, please view our Outdoor Swim Lesson information on page 6.

Clinical Exercise Program Helps You Get Back to Fitness Are you ready to go to the gym, but there’s an ache or pain preventing you from doing so? Maybe it’s lingering issues with an old injury or something that’s been an annoyance for a while. Perhaps you are hesitating because you’re not sure whether exercise will help it or make it worse. The solution may be a more medicallybased workout program through the Mason Community Center’s clinical exercise program. This program pairs you with a certified athletic trainer from TriHealth. The athletic trainer will work with you to design a personalized exercise program to ensure your safe return to exercise and activity. All you need is a referral from your physician describing the issue and releasing you to exercise. The certified athletic trainer will then meet with you to discuss your medical conditions and design a program focused on your specific needs. The Community Center offers a variety of facilities to help you on your wellness journey, ranging from a variety of equipment in the fitness center to the track and warm water therapy pool. To learn more, please ask to see the Wellness Supervisor on one of your visits to the center, or call the Wellness Supervisor at 513.229.8555. Session Package 1 Session 4 Sessions 8 Sessions

The second reason for slicing the ball is not releasing your club face. I’ll give you some tips on that next time. Meanwhile, watch your lower body on the swing and get that in order. You’ll then be ready to work on the club face turning over.

Mom and Me

Adult Beginner Golf

Age 18 & up 18 & up

Start by working your club straight back on your backswing, with your left shoulder moving the club away low and slow. It is very important to work your lower body through first. I like to feel this simply by clearing out my hips first and this will help you to work your lower body before your upper body has the chance to come over the ball. You will finish your swing with your belly button facing the target.

Junior tennis classes follow the “games” approach to learning tennis. Classes will be half traditional stroke work and half focused on rallying skills. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play “real tennis” before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Both adult and junior players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills, and basic strategy—all in a fun, stimulating environment. Rainout and makeup classes will be scheduled as needed. There is no makeup for missed classes. In case of inclement weather conditions, arrangements will be made. Please call the City of Mason Hotline at 513.229.8502 and select option 5 to hear program cancellations or delays due to weather.

The Art of Downhill Running A tip from Paul Heintz, owner of Mojo Running. Visit Mojo Running’s kiosk in the Symbiosis store at Mason Community Center. Running downhill is very taxing to the body due to the increased impact forces. There are a few key strategies to learn that will reduce the impact forces on your knees and improve your overall speed and efficiency while using less energy. • Practice your downhill running technique. Running downhill is really all about falling gracefully. Work WITH the hill by gently leaning your body INTO it and letting it pull you down. Open your stride to cover more ground and focus on where you plant your foot. Normally your foot lands just beneath your hips. Try planting it just behind your hips. This will help maintain momentum and reduce the impact forces you feel when your feet land under or in front of your hips. This takes practice—try it a little at a time to avoid injury. • Run every hill efficiently. This one skill can save you minutes on the race course and drastically reduce the impact forces on your body. On the uphill, shorten your stride and keep your torso tall. Focus on maintaining your EFFORT rather than pace. Keep the same heart rate on the uphill as on the flat—which means slowing down. This will allow you to reach the top of the hill with less fatigue and able to take full advantage of the downhill. Most runners make the mistake of trying to conquer the uphill by maintaining PACE rather than EFFORT and in the process get so tired they are too fatigued to push the downhill. The wise hill runner will win every time! Not to mention this strategy makes hill running so much fun!
