Mason Swimmers Take High Honors Swimmers on the City of Mason’s swim teams placed in top spots at several events this summer. The city has two teams. The Manta Rays competition team swims at the Mason Community Center year-round. It is currently ranked 41st out of 2,700 USA swim teams in the nation. About 270 swimmers ages 5 through 22 were selected for the team through try-outs. The Water Moccasins is a recreational summer team that practices at the outdoor Lou Eves Municipal Pool. Over 200 swimmers ages 5 through 18 signed up for the team this year.
Florida, in the National Open Water 5K Championship and one competed in the10K event. Zoe Thatcher led the way with a 19th place finish in the 10K.
Junior Olympic Championships Thirty-eight Manta Ray swimmers qualified for a total of 155 individual swims at the Ohio LSC Junior Olympics for swimmers 14 and younger. The team finished fourth overall in the large team division, the highest placement in the team’s history.
Ohio Senior State Championships
U.S. Olympic Trials Three Manta Ray swimmers qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. Dani Barbiea, 18 (Senior-Springboro HS), Amanda Smith, 22, (Senior-USC), and Austin Caldwell, 19 (Senior-Loveland HS) will represent the Manta Rays at the Olympic Trials in June of 2012. Barbiea and Caldwell are two of only eight high school aged swimmers to make the trials. To try out for the USA Olympic team, a swimmer must achieve a certain time standard for each event. That standard is set so high that only about 800 swimmers out of the 275,000 in USA Swimming achieve it. Each event will only have 75 swimmers entered in the trials. From the 75 entered, only the top 2 place finishers at the trials earn a spot on the USA Olympic Team.

The Manta Rays hosted the Ohio Senior State Championships for swimmers 15 and older at Kenyon College in July. Forty-five Manta Rays competed and won the team state title by almost 1,000 points over the second place Cincinnati Marlins.
D-II Tri-County League Under the direction of Feliz Hall, the new head coach of the outdoor Water Moccasins team, the team concluded its season with one swimmer taking a first place finish in the Tri-County Swim League D-II Championships and a third place finish for the team. This was the first top three finish in the last eight years. Learn more about Mason’s swim teams at www.imaginemason.org/things-to-do/programs/ aquatics/mason-swim-teams

Learn to Swim for a Lifetime Knowing how to swim opens up a wide world of opportunities for sports, exercise, and fun. If you are comfortable in the water, you will be happy to try snorkeling, body surfing, water polo, swimming for exercise, boating, canoeing, fishing, and other water-based activities. Some are as simple as playing with your kids in the backyard pool. Imagine the benefits of allowing your mind to wander while you focus on your technique as you swim laps. You’ll leave the water feeling refreshed and satisfied that you have met your goal. Swimming burns calories at a rate of about three calories a mile per pound of body weight. Regular swimming can also build endurance and muscle strength. In the water, you use your entire body but with very little strain on your joints. Learning to swimming is a lot like riding a bike – once you learn how, you probably won’t forget.
Start Early Early swimming lessons for children are believed to help them develop an attraction to water and a positive association with it. The result is that swimming becomes a fun activity for the rest of their lives. It also brings a little peace of mind to parents. While you must still be vigilant, it is nice to know that your child is aware of the water and knows how to handle himself around it. The Mason Community Center is pleased to offer swim instruction for ages 6 months through adult. American Red Cross-certified instructors use the updated American Red Cross aquatics program. Classes meet once a week and class sizes are kept small to provide plenty of opportunity for the instructor to work with each student. Children who require assistance can learn to swim through the Adaptive Aquatics learn-to-swim program. Mason Community Center also offers lap swim during open swim hours and instructor-led water fitness classes at scheduled times. Adults looking for more structured lap swim time or access to a coach for help with stroke improvement can enroll in Manta Ray Masters. For pool hours, including lap swim times, please see the monthly pool schedule, available at the community center and at www.imaginemason.org/hours. Water fitness classes are listed on the drop-in group exercise schedule at www.imaginemason.org/things-to-do/programs/ fitness-and-health/drop-classes/classcalendar and on flyers at the center.
Registering for Swim Lessons Here are the answers to some questions that we are frequently asked about our swim lesson program. Do I need a membership to the Community Center to register for swim lessons? Swim lessons are open to the community, regardless of whether you have a community center membership. However, if you are a member, you will receive a discount on the lesson fees. When is the next registration? Registrations are held after the completion of the previous session. At the end of each session, students are evaluated on their progress. You will want to know whether your child should be enrolled in the next level before you register.

October / November 2011
Fall 2011 swim lessons were listed in the previous issue of CenterPoint and end on November 12. The next registration will begin on November 18 for Community Center priority members. Open registrations begins on November 21. Registration will end on November 27 for winter lessons that begin the week of December 4. The winter session will take a holiday break at the end of the year. Which level should I register for? If you are unsure in which level to place your child, please take advantage of the community center’s free swim lesson testing. To make an appointment, please contact the Aquatics Program Supervisor at 513.229.8555. Otherwise, use the instructor recommendation from your last lesson to select the appropriate level. Where do I go when I arrive for a lesson? If you are a Community Center member, simply swipe in at the turnstiles and head for the locker rooms. If you are not a member, please have your swimmer’s hand stamped at either the front entrance desk or the member services desk at the end of the Main Street corridor. Then head through the turnstiles and to the locker rooms on the right, past the TV lounge area. The family locker room is for parents with boys and girls of all ages. All locker rooms lead into the aquatics area. When you enter the pool area, please take a seat on the benches or chairs and wait for your level to be called by the program supervisor. What should I bring? Each child will need to be in a swimsuit when they arrive on the pool deck. A towel is needed and goggles are recommended. Will there be time to talk to my child’s teacher? There is a 5-minute break between classes for teachers to prepare for the next class. If you have any questions for your teacher, please ask during the 5-minute break before or after your class. Can I swim while my child is taking her lesson? Can I swim with my child before or after his lesson? We regret that we are unable to offer open swim when swim lessons are in session. Please keep your child with you while waiting for a lesson. The leisure pool will be available for open swim after the last lesson ends at 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and at 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Can my child make up a missed lesson? Due to the large number of participants, make-up lessons are offered only if the pool is closed for weather or maintenance. The make-up class will be on the corresponding day of the week after the last scheduled class. A credit can be given for illness; please provide a doctor’s note when applying for the credit. How will I know how my child is doing? At the end of the session, your child will receive a report card that designates if he or she should repeat the level or move on. The instructors will also include personal comments and recommendations for your child. There are many skills to be learned at each level. It is very common for children to repeat a level multiple times until he or she shows proficiency at each skill. We look forward to seeing everyone next session!
AQUATICS Looking for Swim Lessons? Registration for the September-November session of swim lessons is closed. Please look for the December/January issue of CenterPoint for our next session of lessons. Registration will be November 18 - 27 for lessons beginning the week of December 4.

Senior Center Access Improved The Mason Senior Center has been an important component of the Mason Community Center since the center opened in 2003. Nearly 2000 adults who are 55 and up participate in the programs at the Center. To help make it a little easier for members to get to the Senior Center, some parking spaces close to the building on the far south side of the parking lot have been designated as Senior Parking. These spaces are close to the corner of the building where the Senior Center is housed. To reduce the walk to the Senior Center, members can now enter through the double doors near the new parking spaces. A walkway has been painted on the driveway behind the Senior Center. Follow the walk to the double doors, which are at the end of the hallway that leads from the main Community Center entrance to the Senior Center. The doors are just a few feet away from the inside entrance to the Senior Center.
Since these doors will remain locked from the outside, a doorbell has been installed. Please ring the bell so that one of the Senior Center staff will know to let you in. The Senior Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you are entering outside of those hours, please use the main Community Center entrance. These changes, coupled with the addition of a push button-activated automatic door opener that was added to the Senior Center door early this year, will help make your visit to the Mason Community Center even more enjoyable. Other changes that the city is working on include signage in the parking lot to help visitors locate their vehicle on busy days and signage to remind visitors to be cautious in the drop-off area. Suggestions to improve the convenience and experience for members are always encouraged. October / November 2011

Youth Strength & Flexibility Academy
A tip from Community Center personal trainer, Kevin Furay
Gymnasium B
Have you ever sat on the sidelines and observed your athlete run out of energy, steam, or enthusiasm due to fatigue? Has fatigue impacted his or her true ability to have lasting endurance to play to their potential? Have you ever thought your athlete’s self-esteem would be higher if he or she performed to their potential by being in better shape? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then the Youth Strength & Flexibility Academy is the right place for your athlete to improve for next season. Developing endurance and strength are paramount to better performance. Flexibility training reduces the risk of injury, decreases muscle tension, and increases motor performance and functionality. As sports become increasingly competitive, developing strength and flexibility in the off season is a wonderful way to get ahead and stay ahead of the competition. Personal trainers and youth coaches will apply their knowledge, skill, and ability to facilitate technical instruction to help your athlete enhance his or her skills through strength training and flexibility exercises. Need a fresh idea for a quick workout? Thirty minutes is all you need for an invigorating strength circuit challenge! Here's a quick workout that will skyrocket your energy levels, help you focus, and burn off some unwanted calories. This workout can be done daily to maintain your fitness when you're too busy to get in your full workout or used to increase strength and endurance. Challenge yourself to maximize intensity and work through as many rounds as possible with as little rest as possible. After a general warm-up, do this strength circuit for up to 30 minutes or for as many rounds as possible: • 400m on the rowing machine (damper set to 10) • 10 goblet squats* (M: Start at 20lbs; F: Start at 10lbs) • 10 seated rows (M: Start at 60lbs; F: Start at 45lbs) • 10 push-ups (M: Start with hands on a workout bench; F: Start with hands on a waist height object (table, bosu on a bench, etc.) Beginners should try to complete five rounds, intermediate: seven rounds, and advanced athletes should try for eight or more round in the 30 minute workout. Work on sound technique for each exercise, which is essential for avoiding injury. Once you’ve built up your stamina, begin adding 5 to 10 pounds per exercise and try the challenge anew!
*Goblet squat: Start by standing tall with your feet slightly more than shoulder width apart, toes turned out. Cradle a dumbbell vertically to your chest like you’re holding a goblet (you can also use kettlebells). Now squat down and allow your elbows, which should be pointed down, to graze past the inside of your knees. Your feet should remain flat on the floor during your squat, and keep your chest up. If you have questions about this or any of the other listed exercises, please visit the fitness center desk to talk to one of our fitness specialists.

Learn to Belay The Edge
Obtain independence through knowledge of basic climbing and belaying skills. Belaying is the process of managing the climbing rope, taking rope in or playing it out depending on the direction in which the climber is moving, and locking it off securely in the event of a fall. As a belayer, you have in your hands the safety of a climber high above who is counting on you to perform well. This is a great opportunity for teamwork building. Day Sa Sa Sa Sa Sa Sa Sa Sa

Swing Easy A tip from Andy Horn, golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island As we begin the fall golf season, I think of the line Tom Watson would use this time of year. “When it’s breezy, swing easy,” he’d say. This is not so easy to do. Whenever the wind blows, human instinct pleads for the player to swing hard. But harder swings produce more chance for bad swings, off-balance swings, too much tension, and an open club face. Here are a few tips to work on. First, if the shot is normally a 7 iron, simply take a 6 iron and swing smoothly. You can also play the ball back in your stance so the ball will fly a little lower and bore through the wind. Second, you can choke down on the club and make a ¾-length back swing. This will help your lower body stay more still and finish more in balance, and you will hit the ball more solidly. Work on this at the range and you will see more solid shots flying straighter, lower, and boring through the fall winds. Good Luck!

Interval training, or a series of challengingly paced runs for a set distance, followed by a recovery period, is an intense but effective way to improve fitness, health, speed, and stamina. On a scale of 1 to 10, intervals should be around an 8 for your physical exertion. Intervals can be run at any distance, typically from 220 yards up to one mile. Recovery time— the period spent lightly jogging or walking after each run—should be equal or lesser to the time spent running. Although there are many variations of intervals, the three basic types are: 1. Repeats: the distance of the repeating running segment does not change (i.e. four 440-yard repeats with a 220-yard recovery jog in between each) 2. Pyramids: the distance of the repeating running segments gradually peaks and then returns to the beginning distance (i.e. 220 yards, 440 yards, etc., up to 1 mile before returning to 440 yards and then 220 yards) 3. Ladders: the distance of the repeating running segments either steadily increases or decreases (i.e. 220 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards, up to 1760 yards, run in either ascending or descending order) Regardless of the type of interval training workout you do, the long-term goal is to improve speed on distances ranging from one mile up to a marathon. The table below can help you pick an interval program to help improve your speed depending on your goal.

Some final interval training tips: • Interval workouts are typically run on a track due to the ease of running predefined distances. Mason Community Center offers a 4-lane, 1/9th mile indoor track available to all members and day pass holders. • Pacing for interval training should be determined in short distance races or runs such as a 5K. Use any of several online pace calculators to design appropriate speed workouts. • Remember to do a recovery jog or walk following your repeats. The distance should be half of your interval distance or more depending on whether you are a beginner or have some interval training experience.
One Stop Shop Symbosis, located inside Mason Community Center along the Main Street corridor, sells running apparel and accessories.
