Swim Academy Stroke School

Swim Academy SwimFit

Leisure Pool

Leisure Pool

Stroke school is for swimmers who intend to learn advanced elements and stroke efficiency in all four stroke types. The stroke school includes the skills taught in Levels 7 and 8 of the SwimAmerica program. Each student must pass Mason Swim Academy Level 5/6 or a proficiency test given by a swim program supervisor. To finish the test successfully, the swimmer should be able to complete 25 yards each of freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke.

After completing Stroke School, swimmers can move up to SwimFit, where the focus is on building the swimmer's strength and endurance in every stroke through drills, multiple laps, and on-deck coaching. Swim Fit allows swimmers to get the feeling of being on a swim team without the competition. If a swimmer desires to be on a swim team like the Manta Rays Swim Team at Mason Community Center, SwimFit will provide a smooth transition.

Mason Water Moccasins Swim Team Lou Eves Municipal Pool • May 29 – July 28 The Mason Water Moccasins is a competitive summer swim team in the Tri-County Swim League. The team practices at the outdoor Lou Eves Municipal Pool. Participants will improve upon the four competitive swim strokes along with starts and turns, and learn what it's like to work as a member of a team and the importance of sportsmanship. The Water Moccasins swim team is for children (regardless of age) who possess a Level 5 swim certificate or can demonstrate Level 5 skills. We encourage children who do not possess these skills to enroll in the Mason Swim Academy to develop the skills and endurance needed to participate on the Water Moccasins swim team. A stroke assessment is required for all new perspective swimmers. Please plan to attend an assessment session at 2 p.m. on either Saturday, April 14, or Saturday, April 21 at the Mason Community Center Competition Pool. It is not necessary to register for an assessment, which should last less than one hour. New swimmers will need the completed stroke assessment form to register. Returning Water Moccasin swimmers do not need to have an assessment and may register beginning Saturday, March 24. The team practices in the mornings at the outdoor Lou Eves Municipal Pool and competes on Tuesday evenings. Home meets are held at the Mason Community Center Competition Pool. Please enroll your child in Mason Swim Academy classes during the summer if he or she will be unable to attend the championships held at Miami University on July 27 and 28. Please note: each family is expected to volunteer in some way with a committee in order to ensure a successful swim season. The Swim Meet committee, the Information committee, the Social committee, and the Awards committee all need family participation. Committee signups will be taken at the Parent Meeting. Don't Forget to Warm Up A fitness tip from Kelly Burchett, Wellness Supervisor at Mason Community Center. Do you ever find yourself forgetting to warm up before a workout? Warming up before you exercise is just as important as pre-heating an oven before you cook. Here are some things to think about when getting ready to exercise. Activity before you work out allows you to prepare for the demands that your exercise will place on you. This includes warming up the muscles that are to be used during exercise. Warming up can include a variety of activities such as walking, biking, active stretching, and stair climbing. The key to warming up properly is to start gently and after several minutes, increase the intensity so that the heart rate slowly goes up along with the body's core temperature. This will provide your body with a better environment for stretching. Another general rule of warming up is to progress from general to specific. For example, if your exercise activity is going to be a high-impact aerobics class, do not end your warm-up with biking. A good progression would be to begin with walking, progress into slow jogging for a few minutes, and then progress into a few gentle jumps and hops in different planes of motions. At the end of your warm-up, you will likely find that your muscles are much warmer and more flexible than beforehand. If you have had injuries in the past, your muscles may need to be even looser. If this is the case, a structured stretching program may need to follow your warm-up. If not, you can go right into your workout. Remember to warm up before your next workout. Just as you preheat your oven each time you use it! *Source: ACE Certified News. Feb/March 2003, page 13.

Lori Hart has been teaching yoga classes since 2009 and acquired her 200-hour teacher training through Yoga Alliance. She discovered yoga in 2003 but transitioned away from it as she began to compete in triathlons. After her second trip to the physical therapist, who kept giving her yoga as her therapy, and unable to run, Lori thought it was time to start practicing yoga again! Today, she is teaches both yoga and cycling. She now brings the breath into her cycle classes and tries to weave the middle path into those who continually pound the pavement each and every day.

Clinical Exercise Program

Gymnastics

Fitness Center Clinical Exercise Program Helps You Get Back to Fitness Are you ready to go to the gym, but there’s an ache or pain preventing you from doing so? Maybe it’s lingering issues with an old injury or something that’s been an annoyance for a while. Perhaps you are hesitating because you’re not sure whether exercise will help it or make it worse. The solution may be a more medicallybased workout program through the Mason Community Center’s clinical exercise program. This program pairs you with a certified athletic trainer from TriHealth. The athletic trainer will work with you to design a personalized exercise program to ensure your safe return to exercise and activity. All you need is a referral from your physician describing the issue and releasing you to exercise. The certified athletic trainer will then meet with you to discuss your medical conditions and design a program focused on your specific needs. The Community Center offers a variety of facilities to help you on your wellness journey, ranging from equipment in the fitness center to the track and warm water therapy pool. Warm Water Therapy For those suffering from knee pain, stress fractures, arthritis, or any other need for water training, try our Warm Water Clinical Exercise Program. Swing Balance A tip from Andy Horn, golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island The one thing I always work on during the spring is my swing balance. Not playing much over the winter causes my balance to be off when I start back. The golf swing starts from the ground up. One thing I do is swing two short clubs together at the same time. I do this very slowly and at about half speed. This gets my golf muscles moving. I do this the day before I play. I will next swing my driver long and slow, then swing two clubs again at the same time and then go back to the driver. I check my lower body and feet for good balance. Work on swinging faster on your down swing, keeping good balance with both feet, and watch your finish to make sure your body is facing the target at the end. Work on this and if you have any questions, please call me here at the Golf Center at Kings Island Pro Shop at 513.398.7700. Good luck and stay balanced.

TENNIS

Tennis in the Parks Heritage Oak Park Tennis programs are provided for juniors and adults. Junior classes will follow the “games” approach to learning tennis. Classes will be half traditional stroke work and half focused on rallying skills. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play “real tennis” before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills, and basic strategy—all in a fun, stimulating environment. Rainout and makeup classes will be scheduled as needed. There is no makeup for missed classes. In case of inclement weather conditions, arrangements will be made. Please call the City of Mason Hotline at 513.229.8502 and select option 5 to hear program cancellations or delays due to weather.

Running Etiquette A tip from Paul Heintz, owner of Mojo Running. Visit Mojo Running’s kiosk in the Symbiosis store at Mason Community Center or the main Mojo Running store in West Chester. Etiquette isn’t just for dining! Here are some tips for the savvy runner from runningcoach.com. Visit their site for more.

Everyday Runs

• When in a group, don’t take over the entire road, sidewalk, or trail. Leave room for someone to pass. • When you are coming up from behind someone, call out “on your left/right,” or “watch your back,” or even just, “excuse me.” • Leave keys, loose change, and other jiggling items at home instead of jingling in your pocket. • Be runner friendly. If your running group gets spread out during a run, agree where to regroup. Do this a few times depending upon the length of the run for the ultimate in safety and courtesy. • It’s good to be a step ahead in business but not with your training partner. Run side-by-side whenever possible. • Avoid broadcasting your discomfort by groaning, grunting, or wheezing. Slow down if you must, but keep the sounds down. • Learn to dress and undress on the run. Don’t ask the group to wait while you tie your shoes or otherwise adjust your attire for comfort. • If you are running in a tight pack and see a hazard on the course, call out or raise your hand so those following will know something’s up. • Don’t assume because someone is slower they want your coaching advice. Speed is not an indicator of knowledge.

Racing

• Turn off beeping watches, heart rate monitor alarms, and cell phones! • Line up in a place appropriate for your pace. If you can’t run the fastest time, move off the front line. • Volunteers are just that—volunteers. Say “thank you.” • For everyone’s safety, try to drop cups, clothes, sponges, etc., in appropriate places. • Don’t stop suddenly to walk—especially at water stations. Slow down, signal or otherwise get out of the way. • Some runners race for fun, some for speed, and some for social atmosphere, so don’t expect all runners to be social before or during a race. (But you should still smile at everyone.) • Spectating is hard work! Give spectators a thumbs-up. • “Looking good” is acceptable encouragement. “Get the lead out!” isn’t. Be a running partner that a running partner would love to have!
