Inclement Weather Policy In case of inclement weather, programs at Mason Community Center follow the Mason City School District. If Mason schools are cancelled due to weather, all daytime programming at Mason Community Center, including group exercise classes and swim lessons, are cancelled until late afternoon. At that time, a determination will be made for further cancellations based on road conditions and forecasts. No programs will be delayed or cancelled if Mason schools are on delay. A weather hotline is available at 513.229.8502, option 5, for center closures and cancellations. On weekdays, after the initial cancellation, the hotline is updated by 3 p.m. and as frequently as needed if conditions worsen for evening programs. On weekends, the hotline is updated as needed. Most programs that are cancelled due to weather will be offered a makeup class on the same day of the week and time at the end of the session. If a makeup class is not possible, a refund will be offered. Mason Community Center staff will inform participants by phone or e-mail of their scheduled makeup class. Mason Community Center will not close due to inclement weather unless absolutely necessary, though some services may be limited depending on available staff during bad weather.

Level 1 w/Parent Leisure Pool

powered by Mason Community Center is proud to feature the Mason Swim Academy, presenting learn-to-swim instruction based on a proven lesson program developed by SwimAmerica™. Students will be taught by certified coaches as they progress through ten stations of competency. The SwimAmerica format was developed by experienced Olympic coaches and is offered in cooperation with the Mason Manta Rays swim team, one of the top swim teams of its size in the country. Let the team’s experience help you or your child become a competent swimmer even if you do not expect to swim competitively. Group swim lessons are for children 3 to 17 years old. Adults interested in swim lessons are invited to register for private or semi-private swim lessons. All lessons are held in the Leisure Pool unless otherwise noted.

Volunteer to be a Coach Part of the success of the Mason Swim Academy is due to many men and women who volunteer to coach or assistant coach. If you have past experience swimming, coaching, or teaching and are interested in volunteering for the Mason Swim Academy, please contact our Site Supervisors at 513.229.8555.

Infant Water Safety Leisure Pool The goal of this private, one-on-one lesson is to promote a positive response to the water environment and teach your 6- to 24-month old baby to float on his or her back and get a breath of air. The emphasis is on water adaptation and training the child to react in a constructive manner should they find themselves in water accidentally. Class is conducted with child and coach.

Prerequisite: Three years old. Some children need a little extra reassurance when first introduced to swim lessons. This parent/child class will do just that. Working with the coach, you will assist your child in learning the Swim Academy Level 1 skills. With your help, your child will learn to put his or her face in the water, blow bubbles, and float on front and back. Class is geared toward slowly acclimating your child to the aquatic environment without parental assistance. Please come prepared to accompany your child in the water. Activity number: 152320 Fee (PRE/BAS/MR/NR): $46 /$55 /$69 /$83

Prerequisite: Have a Mason Swim Academy Level 5/6 certificate or be able to complete 25 yards each of freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke.

After completing Stroke School, swimmers can move up to SwimFit, where the focus is on building the swimmer's strength and endurance in every stroke through drills, multiple laps, and on-deck coaching. SwimFit allows swimmers to get the feeling of being on a swim team without the competition. If a swimmer desires to be on a swim team like the Manta Rays Swim Team at Mason Community Center, SwimFit will provide a smooth transition.

Stroke school is for swimmers who intend to learn advanced elements and stroke efficiency in all four stroke types. The stroke school includes the skills taught in Levels 7 and 8 of the Mason Swim Academy. Day Date M,W 1/7-2/13 Tu,Th 1/8-2/14

Young Rembrandts® Drawing Classes

Elementary Drawing

Activity Room B Drawing is the fundamental skill of the visual arts and can give children an academic advantage in the classroom. Young Rembrandts focuses on teaching children to draw using demonstration and a structured stepby-step process. This method of directed drawing gives young students instruction on how to draw increasingly complex images at a crucial time in their development. Through the process of weekly instruction, students are exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concepts, art history, and mastery of their materials.

Pre-School Drawing Young Rembrandts® pre-school program is designed with the youngest learners in mind. Subjects that youngsters are familiar with, such as animals and toys, are used along with their favorite learning tools— pictures, stories, touching, and doing—to enhance social and conflict resolution skills while improving listening, fine motor skills, and staying on task. You’ll be amazed at what they create! Day M W

This delightful program combines Young Rembrandts® innovative stepby-step drawing method with light-hearted subject matter that engages children, their sense of humor, and their vivid imaginations. Maintaining a quick pace and drawings that tell a story also help kids to stay on task, learn from their mistakes, find new solutions to a problem, and communicate ideas and concepts through pictures—skills with lifetime benefits! PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Musikgarten Early Childhood Music Classes Meeting Room When music and movement are a natural, joyous part of childhood, children benefit greatly in many areas of life. Language development, self-expression, memory skills, concentration, social interaction, fine motor skills, listening, problem solving, teamwork, goal setting, and coordination are all impacted by early music and movement education. What’s more, as a child learns to play music, other areas of development—creativity, family bonding, self-esteem, confidence, and emotional development—are also positively impacted.

Nimble & Quick Share your favorite nursery rhymes—the beloved poems and chants handed down from generation to generation! Nursery rhymes are a lasting art form and offer children the wisdom of the ages as well as communication, movement, interaction, repetition, and cultural customs, all experienced in a playful way. Each new participant of this program must purchase the additional supply kit with a Parent Book, CD, and 1 bean bag. Parts of Deerfield Township have a Mason mailing address and may also be in the Mason School District, but they are outside the city limits. The earnings taxes paid by Mason residents help pay for many benefits that are not available to non-residents. Quality of Life and Mason Community Center: One Man’s Story Have you ever followed someone’s suggestion and achieved results beyond your expectations? Here’s a story of how one man improved his health by using the Mason Community Center to act on a friendly suggestion. While everyone’s situation is different, one thing is for sure—Mason Community Center can serve many needs. Our post-rehab program, personal trainer sessions, drop-in group exercise classes (dozens every week!), water programs, fitness center, weight loss programs, and more can help you achieve your goals. Here’s how the center changed Dave Anderson’s life. I joined the Mason Fitness Center in May of 2003 and have been an active member ever since. I was mainly using the weight machines and the pool in the mornings before I went to work. I retired in 2007 and have been coming in the midmornings almost every day during the week. At the end of 2009 I had my back operated on for a herniated disc and used the Mason Fitness Center for most of my physical therapy using the weight machines and swimming every day. In 2010 someone suggested that I try a Yoga class for my back. I had a long discussion with Beth Tysl and in June I started with Gentle Yoga one day a week. In 2011 I started doing 2 Yoga classes a week and then 3 days. The pain in my back has disappeared along with the pains and numbness in my legs. I now can take hour long walks with no problems and I usually walk to the Fitness Center (20 minutes each way) in the mornings. This has been To register, see page 2.

the best thing for my recovery. I am now a huge proponent of Yoga and encourage everyone to try it. This year I was doing 4 classes a week and in April the Monday class was changed to a “Cycle/Yoga” class which is different. Lori Hart gave me a challenge to try this. I like the cardio aspect of the class and the Yoga stretches afterwards. In June of this year I started to also attend the Wednesday “Cycle/Yoga” class (now called “Cycle/Stretch”). Since June I have noticed that my weight has started to fall. When my back was operated on I weighed as much as 215 and at the beginning of June 2012 I was still 212. The end of September I weighed 200 and holding. If you would have told me that at age 69 I would start a cycling class and then lose 12 pounds I wouldn’t have believed it. I haven’t been below 200 since the 1980’s. I am now doing Cycle/Stretch (Mon, Wed, Fri) and Yoga (Tue, Thu). I would like to thank Beth and Lori as you have changed my life and also to thank Pooja, Kim and now Heather for keeping me challenged, motivated and not becoming just another “Old Geezer.”

SPORTS Breaking the Cycle of Holiday Weight Gain

Open Gym Usage

By Tiffany Wentzel Fitness Program Coordinator The holiday festivities are upon us. They seem to bring with them each year the tendency to eat more and exercise less, leading to the inevitable holiday weight gain. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This year, don’t allow yourself to say, “I don’t have time.” This is one of the biggest excuses for not exercising and it’s not true. We all find time to do the things we enjoy. It’s time to put your health at the top of your priority list. If you don’t have a block of 30 minutes or more to exercise, break it up. Here’s how: Indoor activities during the winter season: •D o a short workout tape. • Walk your stairs for 10 minutes. •U se your lunch break to walk around or walk the stairs. • When watching TV, use commercial time to do squats, lunges, crunches, etc. Eating during the holidays: •U se smaller plates at meals. This is an easy way to cut down portions while still seeing a full plate. •C ut food into smaller pieces. This helps your brain think you have eaten more. •P ut the food away after you eat to avoid grazing and overeating. •P lan activities after meals to avoid sitting around and eating out of boredom. • S et a house rule that the kitchen is “closed” at a certain time at night to avoid late night snacking. Your last meal should be at least 2 hours before bedtime. •D rink plenty of water. We tend to not feel as thirsty in the winter, but our body still needs water just as much as during warmer months. Give yourself some incentive: • S tart the new year right by joining the second annual Empowered to Lose BIG Challenge here at Mason Community Center. It’s going to be bigger and better than last year—so don’t miss out on the new options to make 2013 your healthiest yet! •C heck out Mason Community Center’s Pinterest page to find great workout tips and motivation. • S et a goal to be more active in 2013. You don’t have to run a marathon or drop 30 pounds, just get more involved in the community and make healthier choices. •D on’t wait! Why not start today? You’ll be happy you did.

GOLF

Winter Weather Play A tip from Andy Horn, Golf Pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island This is a great time of year to play golf. In the off season, I will dress in layers and will play with winter gloves on. I also take a few clubs out of my bag to make it lighter when walking. With more clothes on during winter golf, I shorten my swing and take an extra club on most shots. You will hit the ball more solid and straighter. On a windy day, play the ball back in your stance and you will have a lower ball flight with more spin. Your hands at impact will be in front of the ball and that will also help keep the ball lower. Another tip in the wintertime is to widen your stance. This will help your balance in the windy season. Dress warmly and keep swinging all winter long! As always, if you have any problems or questions, please call me in the golf shop!

To some, the idea of eating before, during, or after a run can be hard to imagine. For others, it’s learning to cut back in quantities that becomes the struggle. A large part of running, especially long distances, is the way that you fuel your body. There are many options these days, but the only true way to determine what works best for you is to try them out and to learn from your experience. Before: While water is extremely important, it is wise to also consume some form of electrolyte. Gatorade and PowerAde are two well-known liquid refueling agents. They work great for most people, but they aren’t the only product available. GU is most famous for their multi-flavored, palm-sized packets of, well, electrolyte goo. They also offer powdered electrolyte mixes that can be added to your water to provide you with the carbohydrates and sodium that your body will lose as you run. Another popular brand of electrolyte beverage is Nuun. This line does what the others do, but with a more “carbonated” taste. Keep it simple. Before your run, eat simple (white) carbohydrates as opposed to complex (wheat and grain) carbs. Simple carbs are more easily digested by the body. Add in a little protein (peanut butter, almonds, or egg white) and are you ready for an optimal work out. During: This is by far the trickiest area to discuss. Nutritional supplements during your workout are a game of trial and error. Currently on the market you can find gel cubes, crispy wafers, liquid filled gels, and the gel packets like GU. Most offer caffeine options. Learning what your body needs and beating it to the point of crash is the key to using these products. The brands offering the supplements will say to take some form of nutrition every 45 to 60 minutes of activity. I prefer to work off mileage. Every 4 to 6 miles, I will consume something other than just water. I have learned through trial and error that waiting until the 7-mile mark is too late and I spend the next few miles trying to recover instead of keeping my body on track. It may be different for you. It is a learning process, but one well worth it! After: Again, water is vital, but I would also stress the importance of refueling your body with the electrolytes it has lost. Post-workout needs are similar to pre-workout in terms of food, but you have a wider palette available to you. Your body no longer needs to digest as quickly as during a workout. You can consume complex carbohydrates to enhance your metabolism and keep it moving. Protein should be one of, if not the first thing that goes in your mouth, but be leery of protein bars. Many are packed with sugar and unnecessary fats that can completely negate the time and effort you just put in. Instead, opt for a runner’s favorite: chocolate milk. That’s right, good old chocolate milk. Low-fat varieties offer proteins and sugars, without the fat of some protein bars. Everything discussed above is offered at Buckeye Running Company.
