Welcome Melbourne’s $59 billion knowledge sector is the key to our future prosperity. This diverse and innovative sector is central to Melbourne’s future resilience, both economic and social, and spans the engineering, science, advanced manufacturing, information and communications technology, cleantech and biotech, education and creative industries. The City of Melbourne’s latest Census of Land Use and Employment data shows that in the past decade, we have created 111,200 new jobs in the municipality, with many of them in these knowledge industries. Our Gross Local Product has also increased by 44 per cent during this time to now be worth $90.6 billion. Melbourne Knowledge Week provides the chance to explore, collaborate and connect with the talent and innovation shaping the transformation that will secure our city’s future economic and social growth. We encourage you to participate in this uniquely Melbourne festival, connect with others and contribute to the change that’s rapidly occurring across the city.

Overview Connecting minds, creating change is at the core of this year’s Melbourne Knowledge Week (MKW) festival program. Explore innovations, collaborate with experts, and grapple with the interconnected challenges and opportunities our city is facing. In a curated program, delivered in partnership with the organisations best placed to lead these conversations, you will see why accountants are working with coders in the Botanic Gardens, learn how augmented reality is changing neuro surgery, and discover what the ‘big 3’ is and why it’s got the city’s brightest data scientists scratching their heads. Kicking off with the festival keynote from London-based thought leader Dan Hill, other MKW highlights include the BlackBOX exhibition, which showcases inspiring designs and innovations from Melbourne, and the co-working space open day, where more than 20 unique inner-city spaces for professionals and creatives will throw open their doors to the public. Meanwhile, dozens of workshops will explore UX design, data visualisation and cryptography, and hackathons will solve real problems for the benefit of a future Melbourne.
This year the festival extends beyond the City of Melbourne’s boundaries with a slate of satellite events occurring simultaneously in the cities of Yarra, Port Phillip, Maribyrnong and Stonnington. Finally, don’t miss the heart of the week, the MKW Festival Hub, supported by the University of Melbourne our official festival partner. With activity throughout the week, this is a great space for catching up with other MKW participants to discuss all that you’ve experienced over a drink, a game of foosball, or just relax in our virtual reality lounge presented by Deakin University. We hope you will join us for this year’s festival, as we aim to create change in Melbourne and beyond by connecting the city’s most innovative industries with the community’s most curious minds.
