Welcome to the Adventure! Welcome to the NEW 101 Days of Summer Adventure Passport! Between Memorial Day and Labor Day - May 27th to September 2nd - your goal is to complete as many tasks as possible to be eligible for prizes! Everyone is welcome to join in the fun - family, friends, pets, or whomever you like to spend time with! So, how does it work? 1. Join the 101 Days of Summer Facebook Group Page. 2. Select a task, event, or activity for you and your family to participate in. 3. Complete an activity, snap photos, and have fun! 4. Load your photos to the group page with our hashtag see page 34 for details. 5. Prizes will be awarded randomly to participants on our social media pages. 6. At the end of summer, join Manhattan Parks & Rec and Fort Riley Outdoor Rec for a fun-filled family BBQ! Print your ticket from the Facebook event page and join the fun! 7. Remember! Go Fishing Did you know Kansas is one of the best kept fishing secrets in the country? Area lakes are filled with many varieties of fish like catfish, bass, walleye, rainbow trout, crappie, and bluegill. Grab your gear, or rent some from the Outdoor Recreation Center! Stand Up Paddle boarding Want to try Stand-up Paddle Boarding (SUP)? Well now is your chance! Join the Fort Riley Outdoor Adventure Team for a SUPing excursion that is sure to be fun for the entire family. Classes take place at either Funston Lake on Fort Riley, or Pottawatomie Lake No. 2 State Fishing Lake in Manhattan. Equipment and instruction will be provided. Go for a Family Run The Just Tri It youth and adult triathlon on August 10 is a fun and challenging event for kids ages 5-14, and adults! Young athletes will swim, bike and run in this threeevent race that not only promotes fitness but improves self-confidence as participants cross the finish line on their own. Go Canoeing or Kayaking Little Apple Paddle July 13th Begins at 9am Paddle the Kansas River with Manhattan Parks & Rec! This year, we are breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest parade of canoes or kayaks! Depart from Linear Trail Head (E Hwy 24) at 9am, arriving in St. George around 1pm. Lunch and T-shirt included. Bring your own vessel or rent one. Registration fee varies. Life-jackets required. Family Camp-Out Grab the family, camping gear, and excitement as you camp at a state or Army Corps of Engineers campground! Alternatively, throw a blanket and bed sheet up in the backyard for a more convenient homestyle version of camping. Either way gets you into the beautiful outdoors! Backyard Family Campout June 22nd-23rd Take part in the Backyard Family Campout at Outdoor Rec! Pillsbury Crossing Located 7 miles southeast of Manhattan, this natural limestone slab was used by pioneers to cross Deep Creek. This hidden jewel is a must-see in the area. The flat rock crossing drops off to a 5-foot-high waterfall that is approximately 40 feet wide. To get to Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area from I-70, take exit 316 and go north on Deep Creek Road for 5 miles. Turn right on Pillsbury Crossing Road and travel about 2 miles to Pillsbury Crossing Lane. These are all dirt roads. To get to Pillsbury Crossing and Deep Creek Waterfall from Manhattan, drive south on Highway 177 for 2 miles to Deep Creek Road. Turn left and drive 3 miles to Pillsbury Crossing Road. Follow Pillsbury Crossing Road for 2 miles. Park is open from 6am-10pm. Located on minimum-maintenance roads. Admission is free!

Visit a Local Park You can visit one of the many local city or state parks! Visit McCormick Park, Wyman Park or Moon Lake on Fort Riley. Milford State Park, Heritage Park, CiCo park, City Park, and Tuttle Creek State Park are examples of where to go off post. Plant a Seed, Find a Flower Try out your green thumb by planting flowers, vegetables, trees, anything or everything that piques your interest. Plant a seed and see what grows! Start the process inside then take it outside to see what you can accomplish.
Kansas is home to hundreds of spring flowers. Many of the flowers have started blooming and can be located all around our neighborhoods and other outdoor areas. There are hundreds of varieties in a rainbow of colors. See if you can find a few and identify them. A great website for identification is www.kswildflower.org. Fun at a Kansas Lake Fort Riley is sandwiched between Milford Lake and Tuttle Creek Lake, two of the largest lakes in Kansas. Visit a Local Farm Or Market Farmers Markets are great places to pick up fresh items like fruits, veggies, cheese, and salsa! When you shop at these markets you support local vendors. Milford Nature Center Located near Milford Reservoir, the Milford Nature Center provides visitors with a better understanding of the natural communities of Kansas. This is a great place to visit to see living examples of Kansas wildlife. Animal exhibits include snakes, turtles, prairie dogs, owls, a bobcat and much more. The Milford Nature Center is operated by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Hours of operation: Monday-Friday: 9am-4:30pm Saturday-Sunday: 1-5pm (Closed weekends from October-March)

Find Animal Tracks Sometimes, all you need to do is look down to know what kind of animals have been in an area. Different kinds of animals make different kinds of tracks. Take some time in a wilderness area and look for some animal tracks. Draw, photograph or mold the tracks and see if you can identify them. Need some assistance? Visit a Pool or Splash Park Cool off with some aquatic action! Visit a pool or splash park and make some waves. Custer Hill Aquatic Park, and Eyster Pool are great fun on Fort Riley. In Manhattan, visit CiCo Water Park, City Park Water Park, Northview Water Park, the Splash Park at City Park or the Blue Earth Plaza Water Feature and Splash Pad. Play Disc Golf The course at the Adventure Park – located at the Outdoor Adventure and Travel Center – is set up and ready to play. KSU Gardens & Insect Zoo Located on the Kansas State University campus, the garden is a great place to visit to relax and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature. It is also a great place to teach your children about plants. Make an Insect Collection Kansas is home to an estimated 15,000 different species of insects. Start exploring your yard and see what you can find. While you can do a traditional collection, my favorite way to collect insects is with a camera. Always make sure you have an adult with you when you go exploring for insects.

Family Bike Ride Remember to always wear your safety gear, including helmets and reflective clothing at night. Bring water and snacks for a longer ride.
Mountain Biking (Tuttle Creek State Park) June 8th 2-3:30pm Cruise the local Mountain Biking trails with Fort Riley Outdoor Recreation! Cost includes bike and helmet rental. This is considered an intermediate skill level class. Transportation and State Park parking pass NOT included. Open to ages 16 + (Participants under 18 require parental sign-up for supervision). Take a Hike Konza Prairie is a biological research station with limited facilities for visitors. Public hiking trails: • Park at the Nature Trail trailhead, near the main entrance, by kiosk. • Pets, horses and bicycles are not permitted. Admission: $2 per person (trail maintenance fee) Directions: From I-70: Take Exit 307. Travel 4.5 miles north on McDowell Creek Road to the main entrance, which is on the right. From the north: Take Highway K-177 south through Manhattan. Cross the Kansas River Bridge. Immediately turn right (south) onto McDowell Creek Road (Riley County Road 901). Travel 6 miles south to main entrance, which is on the left. River Walk Trail Get up and get going to one of the area’s hiking trails. River Walk Trail is located west of Trooper Drive before you get to Trooper Gate. Don’t know what other trails to visit? Stop by the Outdoor Adventure and Travel Center for some suggestions, or pick up a Manhattan Trail Guide at the Manhattan Parks and Rec Office, 1101 Poyntz Ave.

Bird Watching View and identify 5 different bird species! There are more than 470 bird species known in Kansas. Spend a little time and see if you can see and identify at least 10 of these species. This activity can easily be done in your backyard or at the park. For a little more adventure, head to the lake and look for some water birds. If you are having a hard time identifying your birds, bring a picture to the Outdoor Adventure & Travel Center and we will try to help, or visit Tuttle Creek State Park.

Play a Ballgame Turn off the TV, computers, and video games. The dishes can wait and so can the vacuuming. Grab the kids and hit the yard for a family or neighborhood ballgame!
