Gifts
Decorations
Buy Local – a great source is the Mount Rainier Annual Craft Fair at Joe’s Movement Emporium on December 5, 2015 10 am—5 pm. Donate to a favorite charity in their name. Many charities offer holiday gift programs. Send eCards instead of paper cards, or choose cards made out of recycled materials. Give “experience” or “service” gifts: a spa treatment, a music lesson, babysitting or pet care, restaurant gift cards, tickets to concerts or sporting events, gift cards to local businesses Wrap your gifts in recycled paper. You can also use plain brown paper (even brown bags from the grocery store!) and decorate it using stamps, ribbons, stickers, etc. Give baked goods or other food items, or put together your recipes and give a personalized cookbook. Avoid gifts that require batteries – about 40% of all battery sales take place during the holiday season! Batteries present an environmental hazard when they wind up in our landfills. You can wrap gifts or make holiday cards using
LED holiday lights consume about 90% less energy than incandescent lights! They also last longer and cost less to operate. Put your lights on a timer to ensure they’re only on when you can enjoy them. Light up the holiday with soy or beeswax candles instead of petroleum-based ones. For the deepest green, get solar powered LED lights for outside your home.
Food & Guests
RENOVATION RESOURCE CORNER
Feature locally sourced, organic, vegetable-based meals at your holiday table. If you choose to include meat, look for free-range, organic options. Make sure guests know where your recycling and compost bins are, and what should go in them! Instead of buying disposable plates and cutlery, consider borrowing dishes from friends.
