Union Pacific Grant

Enables Free Virtual Job Training at Laman Library

North Little Rock Public Library System is the first public library in Arkansas to offer free virtual job skills development opportunities through the Transfr Virtual Training Facility. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from Union Pacific, Laman Library invites community members to explore and develop skills under the guidance of a digital coach in several educational programs, including medical, manufacturing, construction, culinary, automotive, hospitality, electrical construction, aviation maintenance, and diesel technology.

"We're excited to offer free workforce skills development and career exploration to students and everyone else seeking to expand their skills," said Crystal Gates, executive director of North Little Rock Public Library System. "We certainly appreciate Union Pacific's support in providing this virtual reality training."

For nearly 160 years, Union Pacific has been committed to helping local communities. Their Community Ties Giving Program prioritizes funding for building foundational skills and offering resources that help the existing workforce reach the next level of their careers

According to Transfr, more than 27,393 Arkansans have participated in their career exploration program since September 2021. In the past year, 1,749 trainees mastered over 6,770 skills in simulations. Many of those learners were high school and community college students using the Virtual Training Facility for career exploration, precision measurement training, safety skills training, and classroom learning

"We are especially pleased to assist entrepreneurs, small businesses and community members who want to learn more, but for whatever reason, are unable to attend a formal certification program at this time," Gates said.

SECRETLIBRARY GREEK MYTHOLOGY NIGHT

This month's Secret Library theme: Greek Mythology Night! Come to the Loft for this teens-only (ages 12-18), after-hours event for a night of games, food, prizes, and more!

Costumes are highly encouraged, but don't worry if you can't come up with a Toga in time - you can take part in the Toilet Paper Toga contest. Think you can sing (think you can't?) - join in on Apollo's Karaoke Contest! Take a quiz to find out who your god-parent is, and get your face painted in honor of the Olympians. And that's just the start!

The Argenta Library will present Motherload, an exhibition by artists Nancy Dunaway, Lisa Krannichfield, Laura Raborn, Lisa Thorpe, and Emily Wood, collectively known as The Mothers, from April 19 to May 10, with an opening reception on April 19 from 5-8 PM, as part of the Argenta Art District's Third Friday Art Walk This exhibit is free and open to the public

The Mothers shared, “Artwork made about Motherhood is often overlooked or written off as unremarkable or unimportant. The experience and work of motherhood are not to be taken lightly or celebrated. Do you live, work, or go to school in or around Pulaski County? If so, you qualify for a free North Little Rock Public Library System Card!

If you have lost your library card, or have never had a library card, please provide the requested information to apply for a card to access the North Little Rock Public Library System's in-person collection and online resources, including ebooks, downloadable music, movies, and much more. Visit your nearest North Little Public Library (including Rover, our Mobile Library) to get your card.
