It is the perfect time to breakaway and stay in the City of Onkaparinga, to soak up the atmosphere and explore the region. The City of Onkaparinga has been involved with the Santos Tour Down Under since 1999 traditionally hosting Stage 5 of the race. Our stage has earned the reputation of the ‘Queen Stage’ and in recent years has received record attendances for not only our stage but the entire event. On Saturday 25 January, the City of Onkaparinga will host for the sixteenth consecutive year, Pure Blonde Stage 5 of the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under. Join us trackside and enjoy the live coverage or travel the race route and let Pure Blonde Stage 5 take you on a tour of our city’s stunning and diverse landscape. Starting at McLaren Vale, our famous wine region with world class vineyards, cellar doors and restaurants. The riders will head south, only a short trip to our stunning coastline at Aldinga Beach which boasts clear gulf waters and one of our pristine beaches. As anticipation builds for the hill top finish, follow the peloton as it travels around the historic township of Willunga.

Set amongst the natural beauty of old gum trees and rolling hills, the challenge of Willunga Hill will then present as we witness what is expected to be another exciting battle for Pure Blonde Stage 5 victory. Jersey winners’ presentations will follow the race finish at the presentation podium near the finish line on Willunga Hill. Traffic restrictions Total road closures and parking restrictions will be in place during the race, including event set up and pack up. Located in a heritage listed courthouse complex with cells, stables and police residence in a picturesque setting in the historic Willunga township. The museum occupies the 19th century courtroom maintained in authentic condition. The surrounding environs represent an aspect of the natural, pre-European landscape of Willa-ungga (place of green trees), as known by the Kaurna people who inhabited the area between the hills and the coast.

The Slate Museum The Slate Museum opened in the old stables building in 2005. This unique museum tells of the discovery of slate, methods of quarrying, traditional skills and tools of the slate workers, as well as the many uses of slate.
