can become deadly in just two minutes? Unlike 30 or 40 years ago, our homes today are filled with furniture and belongings made of synthetics and plastics. These materials can produce deadly smoke and cause home fires to burn faster than ever before. Every second counts when it comes to home fire safety, so here are a few facts about home fire sprinklers.

RESPONSE TO FIRE

• Home fire sprinklers can extinguish a fire in less than 1 ½ minutes. • Home fire sprinklers do not all activate at once. They operate independently and only if the temperature around them reaches between 135°-165° F. • Over 90% of fires in homes that have sprinklers are controlled or extinguished with only one sprinkler.

Upcoming City Council Meetings Thursday, January 13, 2022 Thursday, February 3, 2022 Thursday, March 3, 2022 Thursday, April 7, 2022

City Council meetings are generally held on the first Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers, first floor, City Hall, 10500 N. Military Trail, unless otherwise scheduled.

Other Ways to Watch Can’t make it to the meeting in person? Our City Council meetings are streamed live via the City’s website. Stay informed from the comfort of your own home!

FIGHTING FIRE

• Fire sprinklers use much less pressure and about 1/10th the amount of water that a fire hose sprays. Home fire sprinklers control a fire while it’s still small, limiting damage. • Home fire sprinklers can be added in new construction for as little as $1.35 per square foot and can also be retrofitted for existing homes.

AROUND TOWN

Your resource for the burning question:

“What are they building over there?”

Downtown Palm Beach Gardens As Downtown Palm Beach Gardens continues their updates, portions of their redesign are starting to take shape. In addition to completing their newest Art in Public Places piece, their other AIPP project is settling into its new lakeside home. The beloved carousel is undergoing final touches of its relocation where it will soon be operated overlooking the lake and Landmark Towers. Where the carousel was formerly located, patrons will find an interactive water feature with comfortable seating for parents to sit nearby. COMING SOON: A new major tenant has been announced; REI will move

in to the first floor of the cinema building.

Avenir ClubhouseEast The residents of Avenir are in for a treat! Construction will soon be completed for a 12,087 square foot clubhouse in their community. The clubhouse will feature an indoor gym, aerobics room, locker room, event hall, kitchen & café. Residents will also be able to take advantage of tennis courts, pickleball courts, a resort-style pool, lap pool, splash pad, and two playgrounds.

Gardens Self Storage (9055 Roan Lane) On 1.66 acres nestled between Northlake Boulevard and I-95, the Crunch Fitness that sat in the corner is no more. The workout facility has now been demolished and site work has commenced on what will be a 76,065 square foot self-service story facility. Along with an accessory office for business operations, the three-story building will house 675 storage spaces.

Palm Beach Gardens, the perfect home for the ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival he ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival, presented by the Hanley Foundation, has a storied past with Palm Beach Gardens. For many years, the annual Presidents’ Day weekend art festival was held on a field behind The Gardens Mall and then on a lot on RCA Blvd.

“Since then, we’ve had a number of sites in The Gardens, one of my favorites sites was the Gardens Mall perimeter road -- one long show. No one ever lost track of their entry gate,” said Barbara Cotrell, who has been ArtiGras volunteer for more than 30 years. “Successful community growth in The Gardens, which was a good thing, moved us to Abacoa. we’re back at The Gardens in my new favorite site – the Gardens North County District Park. I just love the atmosphere of the green grass area with the art!” Yes, ArtiGras has found a home at the Gardens North County District Park and festival organizers are throwing a Garden Arti Parti! The 37th edition of ArtiGras will have a theme this year centered around hosting

a Garden Party. From the Youth Art Competition submissions to the marketing materials created for the event, all will be about a Garden Party to celebrate the relationship the festival has fostered with the City of Palm Beach Gardens. “Last year, ArtiGras needed a new location and was welcomed back to the City of Palm Beach Gardens after 20 years,” said Noel Martinez, President & CEO of the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce.

“Gardens North County District Park turned out to be a perfect location for the growing festival, and we are thrilled to work with the city once again.” Like Palm Beach Gardens, this awardwinning fine art show has grown over the years to include over 300 artists featuring gallery quality work in a multitude of different mediums including glass, photography, jewelry, painting, sculpture, fiber, mixed media, ceramic and drawing. “I’m grateful and honored to be chosen as the ArtiGras poster artist this year. This will expand my artistic perspective with new experiences as well as to offer important representation that will encourage artists within our community to pursue their artistic vision,” said Tracy, who has showcased her art for a few years at local festivals, but this will be the first time Tracy has been selected as a commemorative poster artist.

One artist that will be featured is local painter Tracy Guiteau, who has a studio in West Palm Beach. Tracy’s work is vibrant and rich with colors which reflect “her Haitian heritage, independent spirit, and love of finding beauty in all things.”

The title of the ArtiGras commemorative poster is Blossoming You, and Tracy states her experience during the pandemic was her inspiration, “the journey of becoming who you are is embedded with obstacles and hardship, but overcoming each struggle reveals new growth.” Patrons of ArtiGras will have the opportunity to meet with Tracy during the festival and see her amazing art. The 37th edition of the commemorative poster which Tracy is creating will also be available for purchase onsite at the event along with a limited number of signed posters. ArtiGras posters are always a collectable, especially when signed by the artist. New this year, the festival will be incorporating the art of food in their ArtiGras Culinary Arts Studio. This new area will have a full kitchen set up provided by Kitchen Concepts & More and will showcase the creativity of cooking through live food demonstrations and tastings. This addition to ArtiGras is sure to satisfy the palate. “We are excited to add culinary arts to the list of mediums you will find at the 8

Did you know that over 1 billion households have the opportunity to see and learn about Palm Beach Gardens during the worldwide broadcast of The Honda Classic golf tournament each year? Viewers in 224 countries and territories are provided a frontrow seat to action-packed PGA TOUR competition, produced in 23 different languages on the Golf Channel and NBC, but also take in hours of feature segments highlighting our Signature City as the golf capital of the world and a truly fantastic place to live. The global reach of The Honda Classic is also seen in the player field. More than 20 nations were represented during the 2021 tournament in March, with the champion, Matt Jones, hailing from Australia. To further illustrate the geographical diversity, Jones held

off contenders CT Pan from Taiwan and Adam Hadwin from Canada, as well as past champions Camilo Villegas from Colombia and Sungjae Im from South Korea. Since 2000, there have been 12 different international champions, notably Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els, Adam Scott and two-time winner Padraig Harrington.

Certainly, the chance to compete on the Champion Course at PGA National, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, is an exciting prospect for any PGA TOUR player. They all want to tame the “Bear Trap,” holes 15, 16 and 17, known for treacherous winds and looming waterways that often decide the outcome of the event. For many though, The Honda Classic has become a “home game” – a group lured to South Florida by the ideal weather, top-notch golf facilities and endless off-course activities – Palm Beach County is now the primary residence for more than 40 active professional golfers.

For many, The Honda Classic has become a “home game” – a group lured to South Florida by the ideal weather, top-notch golf facilities and endless off-course activities. Outside the ropes, The Honda Classic annually welcomes over 200,000 spectators to the grounds at PGA National and puts strong emphasis into ensuring there is “something for everyone.” Twice recognized as the “Most Fan Friendly event on the PGA TOUR,” The Honda Classic provides options for all – from the avid golf fan to the socialite, or the family with young kids to the business sector. The Honda Classic offers nearly two dozen public venues for

patrons to enjoy without any upgraded credentials (the PGA TOUR average is four) ranging from front-row golf viewing decks, to can’t-miss and non-traditional shopping experiences, to unique and immersive bar locations featuring the event’s official sponsors. the cause

The creation of world-class entertainment and the transformation PGA National undergoes to host The Honda Classic does not happen overnight. The operational buildout begins in November, with nearly 100 different vendors intricately involved in creating the final presentation for local and global audiences. Recruitment of over 1,600 volunteers – the lifeblood of the tournament and whom without the event could not run – takes months to finalize. Restaurants and hotels prepare tirelessly for their role in providing exceptional host city hospitality and enjoy a share of the over $60 million in economic impact the tournament produces. Planning meetings with key stakeholders literally begin the day after the previous year’s event concludes. “The selfless collaboration of so many leaders within the City of Palm Beach Gardens and throughout Palm Beach County is truly unmatched,” shared Honda Classic Tournament Director Andrew George, “and the ‘all-in’ 6

And as residents we know that “impact” is done through the tournament’s philanthropic arm Honda Classic Cares, which gives back millions to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in our area each year. While the event in 2021 felt a bit different, the goal of raising money for those in need in Palm Beach County remained the same. $5.1 million (the tournament’s 2nd largest distribution ever) was raised and distributed in 2021 to organizations specializing in a variety of areas including child health services, youth programs, food security and mentoring. In total, tournament distributions positively impacted 100 local nonprofits and more than 100,000 children. The Honda Classic has donated $55M to local nonprofits since the event’s inception. In addition, The Honda Classic’s main beneficiary, Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, received $1.2M, the

sixth straight year that Honda Classic Cares has made a gift of $1M+ and surpassed the $10M in total donations to NCHCF. The Honda Classic also offers nonprofits the American Honda Birdies for Children program where local charities present their donor base with a chance to win a new Honda automobile, while at the same time, the charity benefits from the proceeds plus a 5% matching contribution courtesy of LOCALiQ. Since the program’s inception in 2010 over $18M has been raised by charities that have teamed up with The Honda Classic. “While the tournament strives to provide Palm Beach County with a premier professional sporting event, our ultimate goal is to positively impact the youth in our community, and we see that goal realized during Honda Classic Cares week,” said Kennerly. urrounded by lush greenery and modern hardscape elements are six rare dandelions as captivating during the day as they are at night. The Blooms, created by artist Dan Shaughnessy IV, serve as a fun, playful addition to the already budding transformation of Downtown Palm Beach Gardens. The outdoor shopping center, which opened in 2006, is currently undergoing a variety of upgrades that will transform its space to inspire health, happiness, and well-being for all visitors. The goal for the redevelopment plan is to create a sophisticated, thriving urban core that reflects the City’s “live, work, learn and play” environment. One way they are achieving that goal is through the addition of spectacular public art. Dan Shaughnessy IV is a sculptor from Stavanger, Norway, who has a wealth of

He has developed an attraction to form, structure, and abstraction, which led to a fascination with metals. Shaugnessy’s latest focus is on the balance of metalworking with modern technology and the challenge to elevate public pieces like this one to become community landmarks. The Blooms, made up of marine grade stainless-steel stems, hold over 1,000 polished petals on each of the six dandelions. Within each flower is an LED lighting system that pulsates with the movement of pedestrians, creating an interactive lighting experience for viewers. Designed to withstand rain and hurricane-force winds with little-to-no maintenance, The Blooms provide a lively and energetic accompaniment to the open space frequented by shoppers and passersby.

Raised geometric planters filled with Foxtail Ferns, Crotons, and Montgomery Palms surround the steel dandelions. Unique and stylish furniture provides a place to sit, relax, and enjoy the art. The Blooms are an excellent example of what’s to come at Downtown Palm Beach Gardens. The lifestyle plaza will soon be completely reimagined through the incorporation of colorful art, vibrant landscaping, sculptural seating, and so much more. The space will blossom into a desirable destination accented with signature events and opportunities for years to come.
