Move, Sing, Dance, Beat, Jump, Think, Celebrate. Welcome to Riverside Theatres in 2023. Step into the groove!
At Riverside Theatres delivering quality shows for schools’ audiences is a major part of what we do. Our education program is not a side-thought, it is the heart, soul and pulse of our business. We have one of the largest venue-based curated education programs in the country because we are passionate about the importance of quality arts education. We live and breathe it!
When you book a show at Riverside Theatres for your students, you become part of this lifeforce. You are booking with a company that understands you and your students. We understand that organising an excursion is no mean feat so we make it our job to make it as easy as possible for you, to ensure your efforts are well rewarded with an experience your students won't forget.
Our shows are selected with care and experience, with quality learning opportunities being essential to our selection process. Our program seeks to inspire young minds to be inquisitive about the world, to marvel in its beauty and to be action-driven about what needs to change. We challenge students to be creative thinkers, to analyse the past and prepare for the future.
To support you in the classroom we provide detailed curriculum links for each show to help contextualise your excursion and to ensure they are relevant to your units of work. We believe that all students should experience the benefits of live performance, so our Ticket Subsidy program and access initiatives support the various additional needs of your students and school communities.
If there is still more you need, we have experienced teachers both on staff and on our advisory panel and access to the creatives behind the shows. We’re only a phone call away and will explore every request.

However, if you have a group requiring any of our access options for an event other than the ones we have on offer please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate your request.

Riverside has state-of-the-art hearing systems in all three theatres to assist patrons who are hearing impaired. Patrons can choose from a single ear earpiece, a neck loop attached to their own hearing aid or their own headphones, to amplify the sound from the stage. This system is adaptable for people with all types of hearing loss. Please indicate on your booking form if your group requires access to the headsets.
Select performances are audio described for the benefit of patrons with low or no vision. Actions, expressions, gestures, sequences, costumes and scenery are described by professional describers. Blind and/or vision impaired patrons will hear the description through headsets.

Held prior to a performance, these tours are arranged specifically for students or teachers who are blind or vision impaired. They give students and teachers an opportunity to tour the set, props and costumes up close and in context. Tours are by prior arrangement and are particularly relevant for productions being audio described.
Some productions are selected to be interpreted using Australian Sign Language (Auslan). This provides an opportunity for students or teachers who are Deaf to access the theatre show. The aural cues that are essential to the storytelling and the theatrical experience are translated into sign language. Auslan interpreters are discreetly positioned for comfortable viewing by Deaf audiences.
This service is provided based on demand. If you require it for your group, please indicate this on your booking form. Due to the preparation involved, a minimum of 8 weeks notice is required.
Select performances throughout the year are provided as relaxed performances. These are sensory friendly performances where the perceived ‘rules’ of theatre are modified to allow patrons with Autism and other specific needs to enjoy the performance in a welcoming environment. Modifications will differ depending on the show, but can include:
• The house lights being dimmed, but not turned all the way down;
• The understanding that patrons may come and go from the theatre as needed;
• Elements of the show that might include loud noises or sudden bright lights being toned down or removed.
Social stories specific to relaxed performances are available to download from the appropriate show pages on our website. Upon request, we may be able to provide services other than those listed, to help make your groups visit more comfortable. These could include arranging a meet your seat or meet and greet with the cast, to allow your group time to become familiar with their surroundings. With notification, arrangements can be made for you to be seated early or near to an exit as an additional support measure.
Download a copy of our social stories for our venues from our website.
Please add your access requirements or requests when completing your online booking form or contact our Education Booking Coordinator for further information.

“O full of scorpions is my mind dear wife...”
Sport for Jove’s brand new production of Macbeth played to packed houses and incredible responses in 2022, offering fresh and startling insights into this extraordinary play with a thrillingly good cast – a deeply atmospheric, faithful and exciting introduction to the play for young audiences.
Shakespeare’s most immersive and haunting play tells of the murderous ascent to ‘greatness’ of a husband and wife who believe they can control time and destiny. A loving couple, suffering the loss of a child, are surrounded by the children of others –of the King, Macduff, Banquo. To what extent is their first criminal act an act of love in that terrible void, a sacrifice she makes for him and in return, he for her?
Sport for Jove’s acclaimed Macbeth is an ecstatic vision of ghosts, shadows, what love and ambition can do to people, and the terrors of the imagination.
Macbeth is a must-see for students of the play, or young people experiencing Shakespeare for the first time.

Bush Bailando earned the artist the 2016 Dance Australia critic’s choice for Most Interesting Artist. In her new work, Pepa will surround herself with renowned performers from Spain exploring the intricacies, superstitions and cliches in Flamenco’s past and present.
The Learn the Repertoire, See the Show workshop will introduce students to the art of Flamenco and its cultural history, a wonderful blend of entertainment and education. Students will learn how Flamenco music, song and dance all relate to each other with demonstrations of the varied Flamenco instruments and techniques involved in Perceptions such as castañuelas (castanets) & Flamenco dance (Baile).
Reckoning is a show depicting the intertwining of indigenous culture through storytelling, original songs and dance, tackling the modern-day effects of racism and intergenerational trauma.
Employing strong visuals projected on screen, emotionally charged song, deeply personal story telling and genuine raw emotions of anger, grief, sadness and joy, Reckoning leads its audience through a process of truth-telling and truth-accepting that subtly triggers states of empathy and understanding, whilst the music uplifts the audience.
This is achieved by presenting the themes of the show in a visually beautiful way with original costuming, symbolic staging, a bright engaging colour pallet, atmospheric lighting and environment, inspiring lyrics in language and an utterly dance-worthy contemporary sound by Samuel Gaskin and The Merindas.
This show is a recognition of past injustices, a journey through understanding, and a celebration of indigenous cultures survival, creativity and strength.
FYI - this production contains some bright lights, haze effects, sudden loud noises, addresses the effects of bullying, abuse and trauma in a way that comprehension of subject matter is naturally age appropriate.

“In short, it’s hilarious.” - Sydney Morning Herald
A very cheeky, very clever, utterly irreverent riff on Hamlet – made especially for children. The Listies, maestros of children’s entertainment, have pulled apart Shakespeare’s classic and glued it back together with hilarious costumes, loads of silliness and plenty of interactivity.
Hamlet is already full of things kids love in a good story: ghosts, castles, sword fights, bodily fluids and spooky stuff. Add to the mix some supersonic gags and expertly timed stage magic and you have a brilliantly disguised Shakespearean tragedy for everyone aged five and over.
And that’s not all… expect bonus pillow fights, pirates, ninjas, ninja pirates, aliens, ninja pirate aliens, zombies and a bunch of other hilarious stuff as The Listies take kids and their adults on a fun-filled hour of theatre. The only thing we can be sure of is that everyone dies at the end – including the audience!
On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. The attendees, six of them Elders and one new initiate, catch-up, laugh together, share a meal and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made.
A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: whether to send these strangers on their way or welcome them?

Co-produced by STC and Moogahlin Performing Arts, The Visitors is at once a riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful and painful days in Australia’s history, and a hugely entertaining study of how communities respond to change and the unknown.
