Tabata is a high intensity interval training which focuses on muscular endurance, muscular strength and cardiovascular exercises. It consists of a total of 8 exercises, followed by 4 rounds of each exercise; a total of 32 minutes broken up into 20 second intervals with 10 seconds rest. The principle is that for 20 seconds, you apply your maximum effort for each and every exercise. The short rest periods allow for your heart rate to remain elevated throughout the entire workout, triggering your anaerobic body system, allowing your calorie expenditure to remain high.
