MESSAGE FROM

UCI President It is my great pleasure to write this message for the 2017 UCI BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, USA. We have come to appreciate this magnificent venue which welcomed rounds of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in 2015 and 2016. Both events met with enormous success, and I am delighted that Rock Hill was awarded the organisation of our leading BMX event of the year for 2017. Hosting this major international event is a huge undertaking, and on behalf of the UCI I thank Rock Hill City Council, the Mayor Doug Echols, City Manager David Vehaun and Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism John Taylor. I would also like to acknowledge the event’s Organising Committee, led by Mark Sexton and Thad Fischer, as well as the different partners, sponsors and volunteers, all of whom play an important role in the staging of these BMX Worlds. USA Cycling and its President Derek Bouchard-Hall do a tremendous job of developing cycling across all its disciplines in the USA, and these UCI BMX World Championships will consolidate that. Since opening in 2014, the facility that houses the Novant Health BMX Supercross Track has not only hosted top-level competition but also welcomed the general public through different programmes adapted for children and adults of all ages and ability. Thank you Rock Hill City for making this facility available to all enthusiasts of our wonderful sport. To win the UCI World Champion’s rainbow jersey is a major goal of a great many athletes, and we can be guaranteed spectacular and hard-fought racing as the athletes try to earn this prestigious prize.

1

To everyone who is in Rock Hill – either as a competitor, as part of the organisation or as a spectator – I wish you all a very enjoyable and successful UCI BMX World Championships. Brian Cookson UCI President

SOUTH CAROLINA, USA South Carolina is a progressive Southeastern state, renowned for its mild weather, geographic diversity, historic preservation and vacation appeal. It is bordered by the states of North Carolina and Georgia at its northern and western boundaries, and by the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Because it encompasses the southern terminus of the Blue Ridge, it is widely considered an ideal state in which to see the verdant rolling hills of the ancient mountain range and the sandy shores of the ocean within the same day. Its largest metropolitan area is Columbia, the seat of state government and center for business and commerce. South Carolina is also noted for its history. One of the original 13 colonies, the state is named after King Charles I and is home to more skirmishes of the Revolutionary War than any other state. It is nicknamed the Palmetto State after the state tree – the Cabbage Palmetto.

3

South Carolina’s high standards for historic preservation and hospitality have helped earn it an international reputation as a prime travel destination. For more information, visit DiscoverSouthCarolina.com.

ROCK HILL SPORTS TOURISM

Sports Tourism Generates Economic Growth in Rock Hill The City of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism (PRT) department estimates that Cherry Park, Hargett Park, Terry Complex, Manchester Meadows, the Rock Hill Tennis Center, Novant Health BMX Supercross Track and the Giordana Velodrome created a direct economic impact of $157.3 million from 2006-2016. Direct economic impact, the most conservative measure of spending, is the monetary impact on tourism industries, such as retail stores, hotels and restaurants that sell directly to the tourist.

11

The figure is calculated by surveying event attendees and taking an average based on what the visitors estimate spending while in Rock Hill. PRT staff ask

questions about satisfaction with the facility, where they reside, and how much the person has spent on food, lodging, transportation costs and miscellaneous spending. PRT Director John Taylor says, “Typically, folks are so pleased with the facilities and events, they are happy to provide spending information for our records. The amount fluctuates slightly from year to year, and is dependent upon things such as inclement weather producing cancellations or major events being held, such as the US Youth Soccer National Championships at Manchester Meadows in 2012 and the 2017 UCI BMX World Championships at the Novant Health BMX Supercross Track.
