OVERVIEW

Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill (LL@RH) – Where Curiosity Never Retires – is an inclusive community of adults, age 50+, who share knowledge through unique educational opportunities and local excursions. Each semester, outstanding volunteer facilitators offer a range of engaging topics, experiences, and skills related to personal growth, enrichment and more. The only prerequisite is a curiosity to learn!

REGISTRATION

Registration begins Thursday, Feb. 16 (see times below). All adults 50+ are welcome to participate in these exciting educational opportunities.

There are THREE easy ways to register:

• Register Online (beginning at 8 AM on Feb. 16) – Visit cityofrockhill.com/lifelonglearning and click the “PROGRAM REGISTRATION” button. See page 41 for complete online registration instructions.

• Register In-Person – Attend the Spring Kickoff Hot Chocolate Social on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10 AM (see page 4).

• Register By Phone (beginning at 1:30 PM on Feb. 16) – Call 803-329-5527 to register by phone.

G eneral Information

FACILITATORS

Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill could not exist without the passionate, talented and fantastic volunteer facilitators. To learn more about the Spring 2023 Facilitators, please visit cityofrockhill.com/ lifelonglearning and select the link for “Meet the Facilitators.”

CLASS DURATION

Classes typically last 60-90 minutes per session. If the facilitator requests a longer instructional period, that information is included with the course description.

WAITLIST POLICY

Due to their popularity, LL@RH courses reach capacity quickly. Do not be discouraged by a waitlist! Instead, see the list as a tool for communicating a request for more seats in a program or for scheduling an additional section of the course. Adding your name to a waitlist is the most effective way to communicate this demand! Whether you register online or by phone, you will have the option to join the waitlist for any courses or events that are already full. Any openings that become available will go to individuals in the order in which they are entered on the waitlist. Waitlist communications may come directly from Krista Hayes OR as an autogenerated email from the City of Rock Hill with the subject: Waitlist Notification. You must respond to this notification within 24 hours.

REFUND POLICY

Refunds will be given up to seven days before a program starts. After that, refunds will not be provided. To request a refund, please email the LL@RH Coordinator: lifelonglearning@cityofrockhill.com.

CANCELATIONS

All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment. If the minimum enrollment is not met one week prior to the start date, the program will be canceled, and fees will be promptly refunded. If a cancelation of any program must occur, such communication will come via email or phone call.

COMMUNICATION

When you register for Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill, you will automatically be added to the LL@RH email list. If you do not plan to register for courses this semester but want to stay connected with LL@RH, please visit cityofrockhill.com/stayconnected. Once you submit your email address, please be sure to select “Lifelong Learning” under the Parks, Recreation & Tourism dropdown menu. You can make additional selections, as well, to stay in the know about many of the City’s fantastic offerings!

G eneral Information

LOCATION & PARKING

Most courses and events will be held at Northside Recreation Center, 900 Annafrel Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730. If meeting locations vary, it will be noted in the course description.

CLASSROOMS & PARKING

The number of registrants per program dictates its classroom. You will be contacted by email approximately one week before the start of your program with the specific meeting room and information as to which parking lot at Northside Recreation Center (upper or lower) is most convenient.

VOLUNTEER

As the LL@RH community grows, so do the opportunities to get involved as a volunteer, which include: serving as a hospitality host/hostess for programs; assisting facilitators with technology or other needs; welcoming participants as a greeter or more! To volunteer, please contact Jody Steele, the LL@RH Advisory Committee Chairperson, at jocarolsteele@gmail.com. Above all, please do the easiest task of all—spread the word of LL@RH to your friends, family and peers!

PLEASE NOTE

The spring semester operates with two 4-week sessions. The first session is March 6 to March 30. The second session is April 11 to May 5. No programming will occur from Friday, March 31 through Monday, April 10. As you select your programs, please pay close attention to the start and end dates, along with the times for each course.

Do you like to fish? Do you like hands-on projects? Do you want to learn to make your own fishing rod? This course will provide an overview of the process, tools and material required to build a fishing rod. (Rods will not actually be built during this course.) Topics will expand from basic rod construction to decorative thread work, with an opportunity to do a hands-on activity at each stage of the course.

GEOCACHING: A MODERN TREASURE HUNT

Geocaching is an activity much like a modern treasure hunt. Using a cell phone, participants will search for hidden caches (treasures)! Participants need to be able to walk 2+ miles in uneven terrain. Additional fee includes purchasing the phone app (details provided at first class).

LANDSCAPING WITH NATIVE PLANTS

You can do your part to conserve native pollinators and birds while beautifying your yard. Native shrubs and flowers can be substituted for nonnative species typically more tolerant of the Piedmont environment. We will discuss plant choices, their characteristics and the pollinators they attract.

Did you know that one of the best ways to push back against mental decline is to learn a musical instrument? The guitar is one of the most accessible instruments with probably the widest appeal. This winter may prove to be a deciding factor in the war in Ukraine. Russia is limiting the supply of critically needed materials to European countries supporting Ukraine. These countries in turn are seeking to wean themselves off Russian products. In this session we will examine how these dueling strategies have played out over the winter months. This course is not about the war itself, however we will examine the impact of the war on Ukrainians.

[3] On this page, click the Log In/Create Account box. This will appear:
