OMPOSTING HOW TO COMPOST

Select a dry, shady spot near a water source for your compost pile or bin.

Add brown and green materials as they are collected, making sure larger pieces are chopped or shredded. Moisten dry materials as they are added. Once your compost pile is established, mix grass clippings and green waste into the pile and bury fruit and vegetable waste under 10 inches of compost material. When the material at the bottom is dark and rich in color, your compost is ready to use. This can take anywhere from a couple months to two years.

GRASSCYCLING Grasscycling is a simple method to recycle yard waste. Mow your lawn so that grass is never more than 2 to 3 inches tall, leave the grass clippings where they fall and allow them to decompose. To foster healthy grass, do not cut more than one-third of the grass blade, and no more than 1 inch total. Clippings return nutrients to your yard and you save time and money by not bagging or hauling them away. Grass clippings also make excellent mulch. 13

Contrary to popular belief, grass clippings do not cause thatch. Thatch is actually a layer of organic material made up of grass roots, not mown grass blades. Grass clippings are about 90 percent water, so they decompose very quickly.
