WELCOME
WELCOME TO THE 2022 GRANNY SMITH FESTIVAL!
I am so glad this iconic street festival is back this year and it’s set to be better than ever.
Celebrating the life and legacy of one of our most famous citizens, Maria Ann ‘Granny’ Smith, there’s truly something for everyone.
Kicking off with the Grand Street Parade, check out the marching bands, community floats, dancers and Council’s festival float featuring a giant inflatable apple, Sweetie Pie and Mrs Smith herself!
Fancy a bite to eat or to do a bit of shopping? Drop by one of the over 250 market stalls for hot food, handmade products, community information and apple-related products.
There’s an impressive entertainment lineup with a singing competition, cultural performances, dancing, live bands and kids shows, including stage performances and a meet-and-greet with Paw Patrol.
The older kids will love The Core Youth Zone at Eastwood Public School, with everything from a skate and scooter park to dance
battles, a video game tournament, live music and graffiti art. Meanwhile on West Parade and Eastwood Oval there’s a range of rides, an animal farm and classical carnival games.
Worked up a thirst? I encourage everyone to join me in doing their bit for the environment by bringing your own bottle and filling up for free at the Sydney Water refill stations located around the festival. You can also stop by the Batlow Cider Bar on the Oval for free cider tastings, apple seltzers, cold beer and wine.
Don’t miss the closing show at Eastwood Oval. Starting with a family circus show by Beeswax and Bottlecaps, followed by new and old classics by Bermuda Social, the night will end with pop legend Dami Im leading us in for a spectacular fireworks finale.
A huge thank you to all our Festival sponsors this year, with a special shoutout to our Platinum Sponsor, RMA Eastwood.
I hope you all have a fantastic day and enjoy all the fun of the Granny Smith Festival.
Clr Jordan Lane City of Ryde - MayorGRANNY SMITH HISTORY
Maria Ann ‘Granny’ Smith was a local. She and her husband Thomas had a farm in Eastwood, near the Field of Mars. It was here, in 1868, that she ‘accidentally’ grew the first Granny Smith apples, when some crab apple seeds sprouted in the compost heap, and she recognised them as a new kind of seedling.
Today these tangy green apples are grown, eaten and enjoyed throughout the world. Granny Smith would have been astonished! This year we celebrate 37 years of the Granny Smith Festival!
