WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE 2022 GRANNY SMITH FESTIVAL!

I am so glad this iconic street festival is back this year and it’s set to be better than ever.

Celebrating the life and legacy of one of our most famous citizens, Maria Ann ‘Granny’ Smith, there’s truly something for everyone.

Kicking off with the Grand Street Parade, check out the marching bands, community floats, dancers and Council’s festival float featuring a giant inflatable apple, Sweetie Pie and Mrs Smith herself!

Fancy a bite to eat or to do a bit of shopping? Drop by one of the over 250 market stalls for hot food, handmade products, community information and apple-related products.

There’s an impressive entertainment lineup with a singing competition, cultural performances, dancing, live bands and kids shows, including stage performances and a meet-and-greet with Paw Patrol.

The older kids will love The Core Youth Zone at Eastwood Public School, with everything from a skate and scooter park to dance

battles, a video game tournament, live music and graffiti art. Meanwhile on West Parade and Eastwood Oval there’s a range of rides, an animal farm and classical carnival games.

Worked up a thirst? I encourage everyone to join me in doing their bit for the environment by bringing your own bottle and filling up for free at the Sydney Water refill stations located around the festival. You can also stop by the Batlow Cider Bar on the Oval for free cider tastings, apple seltzers, cold beer and wine.

Don’t miss the closing show at Eastwood Oval. Starting with a family circus show by Beeswax and Bottlecaps, followed by new and old classics by Bermuda Social, the night will end with pop legend Dami Im leading us in for a spectacular fireworks finale.

A huge thank you to all our Festival sponsors this year, with a special shoutout to our Platinum Sponsor, RMA Eastwood.

I hope you all have a fantastic day and enjoy all the fun of the Granny Smith Festival.

GRANNY SMITH HISTORY

Maria Ann ‘Granny’ Smith was a local. She and her husband Thomas had a farm in Eastwood, near the Field of Mars. It was here, in 1868, that she ‘accidentally’ grew the first Granny Smith apples, when some crab apple seeds sprouted in the compost heap, and she recognised them as a new kind of seedling.

Today these tangy green apples are grown, eaten and enjoyed throughout the world. Granny Smith would have been astonished! This year we celebrate 37 years of the Granny Smith Festival!

GETTING THERE

The Festival attracts a large crowd, which can mean parking is limited. Leave the car at home and catch a bus, train or the Shop Ryder free shuttle service. If you’re local, consider riding your bike and parking at our bike parking station on Hillview Road.

Visit Trip Planner at www.transportnsw.info to organise your journey from start to finish or visit www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/gettingtogsf

DISABILITY DROP OFF ZONE

If you have a disability parking permit and require close access to the festival, use our Drop-off Zone. Entry is on the corner of Shaftsbury Road and Hillview Lane located on the map.

Please note: The Drop-off Zone will not be available between 9am and 11am during the parade procession.

The Grand Street Parade will kick off at 9.30am with a beautiful array of colour and sound, celebrating our vibrant and diverse community. Enjoy marching bands, community floats, dancers and of course our festival float that will feature our giant inflatable apple, our Mascot Sweetie Pie and Mrs Smith herself!

This year we will have a special appearance by a flock of mini grannies and also the winners of our Shoebox Float competition will wheel by.

Each parade group will have the chance to win special cash prizes thanks to our sponsor Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club.

The best spot to view the parade is on Rowe Street so follow the pink parade route on the map and grab your spot early.

CIRCUS PLAYGROUND

Come and visit The Circus Playground inside the grounds of Eastwood Public School between 9am and 3.30pm.

A circus-inspired workshop area with juggling, diabolos, devil sticks, pedalos, twirling things, hula-hoops, walking beams and hand-held stilts will be sure to keep the kids busy.

Circus not only teaches essential hand-eye coordination and balance, it is also a fun confidence-building activity that is very beneficial to a child’s development as well as being accessible to all age groupschildren, young people and adults alike.
