News: Case Management Information vaccinated later can still be beneficial. The CDC recommends ongoing flu vaccination as long as influenza viruses are circulating, even into January or later.
Flu Season Although the leaves are just starting to change colors and football has only just begun, the nefarious flu season is around the corner. Influenza does not discriminate based on age. People age 65 and older are at a greater risk of serious complications from the flu compared to young, healthy adults. What’s new this flu season? Only injectable flu shots are recommended for use this season. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention advises against use of the nasal spray flu vaccine. Flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses. There will be some new vaccines on the market this season. The recommendations for vaccination of people with egg allergies have changed. If you have an egg allergy, you should consult your doctor about the changes. Should I get a flu shot? The CDC recommends that nearly everyone over the age of 6 months get the flu shot. Vaccination is particularly important for people who are at high risk for complication from influenza. When should I get vaccinated? Getting vaccinated before flu activity begins helps protect you once the flu season starts in your community. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body’s immune response to fully respond and for you to be protected, so make plans to get vaccinated. The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. However, getting 4
What should I do to protect myself from flu this season? The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. You can also take everyday preventive actions like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others. In addition, there are prescription medications called antiviral drugs that can be used to treat influenza illness. Does Medicare pay for the flu shot? Yes. Medicare Part B normally covers one flu shot per flu season. You pay nothing for a flu shot if the doctor or other qualified health care provider accepts assignment for giving the shot. News: Case Management Information Marketplace Open Enrollment
As we approach the Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare, another enrollment period is also approaching—the Health Insurance Marketplace (Marketplace) Open Enrollment Period. The Marketplace has its own annual open enrollment period that is separate from Medicare. The two periods start at different times, but they do overlap. Because of this overlap, it is important to know the correct dates and deadlines for each period to ensure that you have coverage for 2017. The Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare begins October 15, 2016, and goes through December 7, 2016. The Open Enrollment Period for the Marketplace begins November 1, 2016, and ends January 31, 2017. Although the Marketplace enrollment period ends January 31, 2017, there are specific enrollment deadlines if you want your coverage to begin on a certain date. According to healthcare.gov, the dates below are the deadlines for obtaining Marketplace coverage: November 1, 2016: Open Enrollment starts the first day you can enroll, re-enroll, or change a 2017 insurance plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Coverage can start as soon as January 1, 2017. December 15, 2016: Last day to enroll in or change plans for coverage to start January 1, 2017. January 1, 2017: 2017 coverage starts for those who enroll or change plans by December 15th. January 31, 2017: Last day to enroll in or
change a 2017 health plan. After this date, you can enroll or change plans only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. If you have Medicare, you are not required to do anything with the Marketplace. If you are enrolled in the Marketplace and are approaching Medicare eligibility, you may want to talk to an Elder Benefit Specialist to discuss your options. Article by the GWAAR Legal Services Team
The Stoughton Area Senior Center offers City of Stoughton residents assistance with the Medicare Part D plan finder during the open enrollment period to December 7. If interested, please call 873-8585 to schedule an appointment.
Nationwide Decrease In early September, Sylvia M. Burwell, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, announced that the nation’s uninsured rate has hit a historic low. The first official data reflecting the Health Insurance Marketplace 2016 enrollment showed that in the first quarter of 2016, the uninsured rate dropped to 8.6%. This is great news for people across the country for those gaining health coverage for the first time, advocates who help people understand their health coverage options, and for medical providers who are treating more people with coverage. November is National Caregiver Month: Take Care to Give Care! During this month, we remind family caregivers that to be strong enough to care for your loved one, you must, Take Care to Give Care! The stress of care giving impacts your own health. Remember: “Rest. Recharge. Respite.” People think of respite as a luxury, but caregivers’ are at higher risk for health issues from chronic stress, and those risks can be a lot costlier than some time away to recharge, take a breather, and take the opportunity to re-energize. This is vital in order for you to be as good a caregiver tomorrow, as you are today. Take Care!

We will start in 1942 with the original land acquisition of 10,565 acres acquired from 109 property owners including: three schools; three churches; three cemeteries; 26 Weigand’s Bay cottages; and 74 farms, wood lots and residences and end with an aerial photo of part of the de-commissioned plant. In between we will see photos of some of the production facilities and processes with the production people next to the production equipment and in some cases working directly with the explosive materials, and some non-production facilities.
Reflexology Thursday, Nov. 3, 1:00-4:30 PM Monday, Nov.21, 1:00-4:30 PM Heidi Fromi will provide this form of massage that applies deep pressure to reflex points on the feet. The feet are like a roadmap that connects to organs and glands within the body and by working with the feet it can increase normal function and flow. This practice will leave individuals feeling relaxed as the body's natural equilibrium is restored. Prices are $25 for 30 minutes or $45 for 60 minutes. Sign up at the reception desk.

Through The Ages – Intergenerational Event Monday, Nov. 28, 3:00-4:30 PM Bring your families for another intergenerational program. Truly Remarkable Loon has been performing as a comedy juggler for almost forty years. Yes, Truly Remarkable Loon is his real and legal name! His comedy and juggling show, "Merry Anticipation of Disaster" is a great variety of technical juggling and balancing feats, non-stop comedy patter and a big dose of foolishness. The best thing about the show, is its very wide audience appeal. Adults and children alike will be amused, amazed and entertained! Open to all!

The ABCs of Great Health Foods Mayo Clinic Foundation
Give your diet a healthy boost with these health foods. They're among your best bets for eating well because they meet at least three of the following criteria: · Good or excellent source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients · High in phytonutrients and antioxidant compounds, such as vitamins A and E and beta carotene · May help reduce risk of heart disease and other health conditions Readily available Apples: They are a good source of soluble fiber, which can lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Fresh apples are also a good source of vitamin C — an antioxidant that protects your body's cells from damage. Vitamin C also helps form the connective tissue collagen, keeps your capillaries and other blood vessels healthy, and aids in the absorption of iron.
Sweet Potatoes: The deep orange-yellow color of sweet potatoes tells you that they're high in the antioxidant beta carotene. Food sources of beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in your body, may help slow the aging process and reduce the risk of some cancers. In addition to being an excellent source of vitamins A and C, sweet potatoes are a good source of fiber, vitamin B-6 and potassium. And like all vegetables, they're relatively low in calories — one-half of a large sweet potato has just 81 calories. Wheat germ: This is the part of the grain that's responsible for the development and growth of the new plant sprout. Although only a small part, the germ contains many nutrients. It's an excellent source of thiamin and a good source of folate, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. The germ also contains protein, fiber and some fat. Try sprinkling some on your hot or cold cereal.
