November 2017,Vol.34 No.11
Mission Statement We are dedicated to the enrichment of the lives of older adults and their families by providing diverse programs, social services and volunteer opportunities.
It’s National Family Caregiver Month We, at the Senior Center respect the important work family caregivers provide to their loved ones. Caregiving can be a strenuous and lonely journey, but it doesn’t need to be. There are many programs and services (i.e. respite, food, legal, financial, medical, transportation) to reduce one’s load. Give us a call if you, or the person you care for, is 55 years or older. Our staff will be happy to help you plan and problem-solve ways to help improve your situation. Remember: To be most effective, caregivers should know and honor their limits. The best gift a care recipient can give their care recipient is their own good health.
Sunday November 5
Would you like a safe place to take a break and to talk through your challenges with other caregivers? News: Case Management Information Our Tech Savvy Senior Community
The evidence in is! Older Americans are moving toward more digitally-connected lives. Whether they are using a smart phone, emailing friends, or checking in on social media… they are reaching out and catching up on our technology-infused world! Did you know that 67 percent of seniors are now using the internet? The Pew Research Center said, “It also remains the case that older adults face unique barriers to using and adopting new technologies. 34% of older internet users say they have little confidence in their ability to use electronic devices to perform online tasks, while 48% of seniors say that this statement describes them: “When I get a new electronic device, I need someone else to set it up or show me how to use it.” Well, that is perfectly okay, and expected, as the electronics are new and operate in ways that are not always easy to untangle. If this is an area you are struggling in, or want to become more adept in, contact Stoughton Area Resource Center and sign up for some assistance!
Added Transportation Now you can shop in Stoughton Monday through Friday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. If you need a ride to the hairdresser or one of the local stores in Stoughton you can get a ride with Transit Solutions by calling the Stoughton Senior Center. We have also added more Friday shopping trips to the Madison area. Check the calendar page 13 of this newsletter for the exact locations. Prices on page 3. To schedule a ride, or if you have any questions, please call 873-8585.

Tech Safety As we all learn to connect digitally, being safe with our information becomes more and more urgent. Every day there are people called “internet trollers,” who want only to steal your private information in order to try and use it to make money. Sometimes they take this information and sell it – other times, they use it themselves to falsify credit cards, make purchases, set up financial accounts. Many of you have heard about the huge Equifax breach, where 143 million Americans’ information was basically hijacked from the large credit reporting company. To protect yourself, Consumer Protection Agency suggests: 1) Be careful of the information you share on the phone, or on the internet. Be very sure the company you think you are talking to is legitimate. 2) Plan to have strong passwords for sites in which you share any personal information!
3) Only download software on your computer, or apps on your phone or tablet that you KNOW are from reputable companies. 4) To provide the best protection, notify the three credit reporting companies that you would like either to fraud alert to your account, or have your accounts frozen. There is a fee… and you do need to unlock the accounts anytime you are applying for a new loan, or for new credit. However, with your credit reports locked, nobody can get into them in order to try and open up a loan in your name. For further help with making accounts safer, contact the three companies:

News: Case Management Information Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period Staff of the Stoughton Area Senior Center
It’s that time again! The Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period began on October 15th and continues until December 7th of 2017. This is the time frame when Medicare Beneficiaries are able to enroll in and/or change their Part C and/or Part D plans. During this time, a person on Medicare can: · Join a Part D plan; · Drop a Part D plan; · Switch to a new Part D plan; · Drop a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare; or · Join a Medicare Advantage plan with or without drug coverage. Changes made during this annual enrollment time period will become effective on January 1, 2018. It is highly recommended that anyone on a current Medicare Part D plan at least check to make sure they are still enrolled in the best plan for their needs going into the new year. Part D plans are contractually allowed to change the terms of coverage every year, which means that plans are allowed to change premiums, formularies (list of covered medications), pharmacy networks, etc. The simplest way to evaluate an existing Part D plan or choose a new plan is to go to the www.medicare.gov website and use the “planfinder” tool to search potential plans. For assistance with plan finding, you may contact: · Your local Elder Benefit Specialist through the ADRC of Dane County at 608-240-7400 · A case manager or a Medicare Part D-trained volunteer at the Stoughton Senior Center at 608-873-8585 · The Board on Aging and Long-Term Care Part D helpline (ages 60+) at (855) 677-2783 · The Board on Aging and Long-Term Care Medigap helpline at (800) 242-1060 · The Disability Rights Wisconsin Part D help line (ages 18-59) at (800) 926-4862

This is where you come in…We would like to match you with one international student. You would “meet together” each week via skype or FaceTime, just to chat for less than an hour. You would be welcome to use the computers in the computer lab, or your own computer or other device. Training and contact information for your international student conversation partner would be provided. We would hope that your partnership could continue for about one semester (January – May). Place trimmed Brussels sprouts, olive oil, salt, and pepper in a large reseal able plastic bag. Seal tightly, and shake to coat. Pour onto a baking sheet, and place on center oven rack. The following fall fruits and vegetables help boost health and immunity this season.
Apples – Apples have long been touted for numerous health benefits and fall is when these crispy fruits taste best. Apples are full of antioxidants and vitamin C which boost the immune system and fight free radicals. The pectin in apples also decreases the chance of heart disease and fiber helps to regulate the digestive system. Cranberries – Cranberries, either fresh or dried, are another great source of vitamin C and fiber. This may be an easier choice for seniors who have trouble eating crunchy foods such as apples. Dried cranberries are also easy to carry along for snacking anytime, and can also be easily added into other healthy meal options such as morning oatmeal or an afternoon salad. Brussels Sprouts – Brussels sprouts get a bad rap in childhood, but as adults we can learn to love these tasty little nuggets if prepared correctly. For seniors, they are most definitely worth trying since they are full of folate and iron which can help build and maintain red blood cells. Vitamin K for bone health and vitamin C for a healthy immune system round out the nutrients in this fall favorite.
Sweet Potatoes – No fall is complete without eating some sweet potatoes. They are low in sodium, have no cholesterol and are packed with vitamins A and C and potassium. These are a traditional dish on many Thanksgiving tables and are a much healthier alternative to regular potatoes. DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER: NO MEALS WILL BE SERVED WHEN STOUGHTON SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED DUE TO SNOW OR OTHER DANGEROUS WEATHER CONDITIONS.
