News: Case Management Information of the door opening. This can add an extra 1.5 to 2 inches of clearance without widening the doorway. Cost: a handyman or trim carpenter could install for about $150. A pair of these hinges generally costs between $20 and $30.
SAFETY TIPS FROM HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE The place we call home is the place that feels most comfortable, familiar and secure. However, as we get older there may be some challenges to an individual’s safety at home. It is possible to make one’s home safer by being proactive. 1. Replace wall-mount shower heads with hand held shower heads on a hose. Handheld shower heads are both convenient and safe because anyone can use the device as a fixed shower headadjustable to the proper height –or convert it to a handheld one. Cost: generally less than $100. With a plumber’s help, could be up to $175 to $200. 2. Install grab bars on the wall near the shower or tub. Those who becomes unsteady on their feet or start to have balance problems could be tempted to grab on to a towel bar or shower curtain and put themselves at risk of falls. Cost: typically $30 to $60 for a good quality bar. With a pro’s help, an estimated $175 to $200 per bar for parts and labor. 3. Add lighting to closets and pantries. Dark closets could not only be safety hazards, they could make dressing more difficult for some people. Cost: an electrician could install a light for around $250. Cost to add a battery-operated light: typically less than $25. 4. Convert to lever handle faucets. Water flow and temperature could be easier for arthritic fingers to control with a lever faucet rather than one that twists on and off. Cost: usually between $170 and $250. Add about $150 to $200 for a plumber to install. 5. Add swing clear hinges. Narrow doorways could be difficult for walkers and wheelchairs to navigate. Replacing standard hinges with “swing clear hinges” allows the door to swing completely clear

News: Case Management Information Cover up! All parts of your body should be covered up when you go outside in the cold. If your skin turns red or dark or starts hurting, go inside right away.
WINTER SAFETY TIPS from Healthinaging.org Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature drops below 95 degrees. Warning signs are cold skin that is pale or ashy; feeling very tired, confused and sleepy; feeling weak; problems walking; slowed breathing or heart rate. Call 911 if you think you or someone else has hypothermia. Note: Shivering is not a reliable warning sign because older people tend to shiver less or not at all when their body temperature drops. Precautions to take: T Stay indoors (or don’t stay outside very long) T Keep indoor temperatures at 65 degrees or warmer. T Stay dry because wet clothing chills your body quickly. T Dress smart; protect your lungs from cold air. Layer up! Wearing 2 or 3 thin layers is warmer than one thick layer. T Essential winter gear includes: hats, gloves, or preferably mittens, winter coat, boots, and a scarf to cover mouth and nose. Frostbite occurs when your body experiences damage to the skin that can go all the way down to the bone, it is most likely to occur on body parts farthest away from your heart. Common places include your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes. In severe cases, frostbite can result in loss of limbs. People with heart disease and circulation problems are at a higher risk.
Warning Signs of Frostbite: Skin that turns white or ashy or grayish-yellow, skin that feels hard or waxy, numbness. If you think you or someone else has frostbite, call 911 for immediate medical help. If frostbite occurs run affected area under warm, not hot water.
Hand washing! Keep yourself safe. T Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. T Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. T Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice. T Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. T Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Signs and Symptoms of Winter Dehydration Source by David E Thomas M.D. Dehydration can kill. It is crucial for anyone to stay properly hydrated but it is even more important for seniors. One of the reasons that the dehydration threat is higher for seniors is because of thinner skin that comes with aging. The thinner skin makes a person more prone to losing fluid. Another issue that makes seniors more open to fluid loss is their medications, some medicines can cause you to become easily dehydrated. Considering that our bodies are made up of 50% to 65% water, this element is critical to virtually all our physical functions. Every organ and system of the body depends on water. Dehydration is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization among people over the age of 65. The body’s initial signs and symptoms of dehydration are: · Thirst · Decreased urine output. The urine will become concentrated and more yellow in color. · Fatigue · Headache · Dry nasal passages · Dry cracked lips, dry mouth, eyes stop making tears, sweating may stop, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness (especially when standing). Weakness will occur as the brain and other body organs receive less blood. · Coma and organ failure will occur if the dehydration remains untreated. · Irritability & confusion in the elderly should also be heeded immediately. Remember that the lack of a sense of thirst is not a reliable indicator of the need for water. You need water long before you feel thirsty. Fluid replacement is the treatment for dehydration. Reduce or eliminate dehydrating beverages such as coffee, tea and soft drinks (unless decaffeinated). Beware of alcohol intake too. Eat lots of fruits/vegetables-high water content. Drink water all day long in small amounts. 14
If an individual becomes confused or lethargic; if there is persistent, uncontrolled fever, vomiting, or diarrhea; or if there are any other specific concerns, then medical care should be accessed. Call 911 for any patient with altered mental status – confusion, lethargy, or coma.
