Stoughton Opera House: 2016 2017 Season Your Seat is Waiting . . . Fall Season 2016 The Steel Wheels Fri, Sep 16 • 7:30pm

Like a thunderstorm rolling over the hills of their native Virginia, The Steel Wheels perform with an energy that mesmerizes. Their music melds styles from traditional country to gospel, bluegrass to 70s rock. With Trent Wagler’s weathered tenor joined by bell-clear four-part harmonies, Eric Brubaker’s lively and evocative fiddle, Brian Dickel’s grounded yet buoyant upright bass, and Jay Lapp’s signature mandolin style, the Steel Wheels have become festival favorites. A dynamic four-piece string band marrying old-time musical traditions to an innovative sound, they will draw you in with their soulful mountain music for a truly magnetic revival. www.thesteelwheels.com

The Reverend Peyton— Front Porch Sessions Sat, Sep 17 • 7:30pm

It’s clear from his part in the genre- and era-bridging “Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band” that fingerpicking guitarist Rev. Peyton’s abilities are in no short supply. Strong on authenticity, his music blends blues, ragtime, folk, country and other traditional styles with the sleek modern energy of do-it-yourself, homespun, punk fueled rock. From Austin City Limits to Bonnaroo to Telluride, Rev. Peyton has earned fans from all corners of the Americana and rock worlds, introducing a new generation to blues. For this “Front Porch Session,” the Reverend will play the acoustic blues and folk of legends like Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson, Bukka White, and Furry Lewis, as well as his own material. http://www.bigdamnband.com/

Small Potatoes Fri, Sep 23 • 7:30pm

The Chicago based folk duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso call themselves eclecto-maniacs, playing music from “Celtic to Cowboy”. They say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Superb musicianship and showmanship, award-winning songwriting, and a strong sense of tradition has made them, as Dirty Linen Magazine once said, “one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit.” They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Festival, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. www.smallpotatoesmusic.com

Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur Sat, Sep 24 • 7:30pm

Jim Kweskin created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. Kweskin explores traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. Geoff Muldaur is one of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and folk-rock during the 1960’s and ‘70’s. Though known as a musician’s musician, it is his voice—reedy, quavering, otherworldly-- that most identifies him. Says guitarist Richard Thompson, “There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.” Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur combine their expertise as a duo, reviving and expanding on their Jug Band days. www.jimkweskin.com www.geoffmuldaur.com

Edgar Knecht Jazz Trio Sun, Oct 2 • 3:00pm

“Knecht’s trio creates relaxing flowing melodies with impulsive effervescent playfulness.”

The Dane County Kassel-Dane Task Force presents the Edgar Knecht Trio, from Kassel County, Germany which is Dane County’s sister county. A virtuoso of the piano keys, Edgar Knecht takes on the teutonic folk song with jazz and world music influences, breathing new life into a seemingly lost tradition. The pianist and composer is one of Germany’s best jazz musicians who, among award-winning solo programs, has written numerous pieces for theatre, film, and television. His ensemble, featuring Rolf Denecke on bass and Tobias Schulte on drums, receives invitations to the most renowned international festivals, playing alongside established stars like John Scofield, Buena Vista Social Club, Pat Metheny, and Dave Holland. Wherever they go, Edgar Knecht and the band turn both the public and critics into fans. www.edgarknecht.de

Wilder Deitz Group Thursday, Oct 6 • 7:30pm

Midwest-based Wilder Deitz Group performs improvisational music steeped in world, hip-hop, and jazz music traditions. Using both folk textures and electronic sounds, pianist Wilder Deitz, tenor saxophonist Alex Charland, bassist Ben Johnson, and drummer Joe Galligan create music that is at once eclectic, danceable, and eminently tuneful. Deitz, the bandleader and principal composer, honed his emotionally-charged, highly creative piano style while under the tutelage of NEA Jazz Master Richard Davis. After four years in existence, the Wilder Deitz Group is releasing “Child’s Play,” a new record devoted to showcasing Deitz’s and Charland’s original compositions, which will be available for purchase at the concert. https://wilderdeitz.squarespace.com

The Best Westerns Fri, Oct 7 • 7:30pm

Melding instrumental virtuosity and the powerful charm of classic songs old and new, from way out West to Tin Pan Alley, this six-piece band is nicknamed “Milwaukee’s Western Swing Kings.” Founder and bass violinist Mark Hembree has performed with Bill Monroe and Randy Travis, and helped form the Nashville Bluegrass Band, which later went on to perform the music soundtrack for the movie, “Oh Brother Where Art Thou.” With fiddle, piano, guitar, steel guitar, acoustic bass, and drums, The Best Western’s musical repertoire ranges from Bob Wills to Benny Goodman, with stops along the way for Slim Gaillard, Speedy West, Count Basie, Carl Smith, Ray Price and many more.

SHEL

Wed, Oct 12 • 7:30pm

Sat, Oct 8 • 7:30pm Sisters Eva, Hannah, Sarah and Liza Holbrook, born within a five-year span, were raised in a bohemian, art-loving family in Fort Collins, CO. Each studied classical music while composing and arranging works for their anomalous instrumentation, violin, mandolin, piano and drums, and they soon had festival promoters and media figures championing their fresh, intricately drawn indie-pop-folk sound. SHEL’s spellbinding live performances tap deep skills as instrumentalists and glowing harmonies to generate improbable power on stage. The future belongs to artists who go beyond mere genre blending by focusing on their inner music, and the four powerful personalities of SHEL do just that. www.shelmusic.com

Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Pretenders, The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current “second act’”as a silverhaired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal. Starting with 1995’s “The Impossible Bird” through to 2011’s “The Old Magic,” Nick has turned out a fantastic string of albums, each one devised in his West London home, and recorded with a core of musicians who possess the same veteran savvy. Lowe brings wit and understated excellence to every performance, leading Ben Ratliff of the New York Times to describe his live show as “elegant and nearly devastating.” Josh Rouse is a model of songwriting consistency. Over the course of eleven studio albums and nearly two decades, Josh Rouse has drifted from earthy, heart-on-sleeve folk; to nostalgic, sweeping AM radio pop; to thrumming country rock. His horizons, musical and lyrical, continue to expand on his latest album The Embers of Time, which has a more-than-passing resemblance to the softly rocking countrypolitan sound that came out of Nashville during the ’70s. www.nicklowe.com www.joshrouse.com

The SteelDrivers Sarah Lou Richards supports

Thurs, Oct 13 • 7:30pm A group of seasoned veterans braiding their bluegrass roots with new threads of their own design, The SteelDrivers bring together country, soul, and other contemporary influences to create an unapologetic hybrid, old as the hills but fresh as the morning dew. The SteelDrivers have been nominated for three Grammys and four IBMA awards, and the movie “Get Low” (Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Bill Murray) features four of their tunes. When English pop star Adele began performing the SteelDriver song “If It Hadn’t Been For Love,” she said of the band, “They’re a blues, country, bluegrass, swagger band and they are brilliant.” The SteelDrivers have been invited to perform on numerous radio and TV shows ranging from The Grand Ole Opry to NPR’s Mountain Stage to the Conan O’Brien show. Opening for the band is Sarah Lou Richards, a Wisconsin native who has found her musical home writing and singing intricately crafted slices of life that meld folk, pop, and Americana influences into hooky, varied, and insightful songs. Richards performs across the country in both cozy cafes and big-name music festivals like SXSW. www.thesteeldrivers.com www.sarahlourichards.com

Herb Alpert and Lani Hall Fri, Oct 14 • 7:30pm

Lani Hall is known for her emotional vocal interpretations and Herb Alpert for his trumpet virtuosity, but the married couple’s musical gifts have become as intertwined as their lives. Grammy-award winning Lani Hall helped propel Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 to international stardom as the original lead singer, and during her solo career, she sang the title song of the 1983 James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again. Herb Alpert, best known from his Tijuana Brass period, is a legend in the music business and the co-founder of A & M Records, one of the most successful independent record labels in history. Alpert’s accomplishments include five number one hits, 28 albums on the Billboard charts and nine Grammys. From Lani’s exquisite voice, to Herb’s trumpet mastery, having the opportunity to enjoy a live concert with these two living legends is a once in a lifetime experience. www.herbalpert.com www.lanihallalpert.com

Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen

Two Shows! • Fri, Oct 21 & Sat, Oct 22 • 7:30pm

Lyle Lovett is one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the late ‘80s, combining a talent for incisive, witty lyrical detail with an eclectic array of music, ranging from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop. Robert Earl Keen struck an unusual balance between sensitive story-portraits and raucous barroom fun, unified by a mordant sense of humor that strongly influenced the early practitioners of what would become known as Americana Music. Although their careers have taken both Lovett and Keen far from home, the college friendship forged in the 1990’s remains, palpable as they sit together on stage cracking jokes, swapping stories, and delivering songs of Cadillac cowboys, family spats, and love gone awry. There is very little “show-biz” about Lovett or Keen, no matter how many movies Lovett appears in or how dramatic Keen’s combo of suit and hat look on stage. Both men are worthy headliners, but the easy vibe of two friends sharing a stage makes for a truly incomparable evening. www.lylelovett.com www.robertearlkeen.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

The Honey Dewdrops

Fri, Oct 28 • 7:30pm

“The Honey Dewdrops have a handcrafted sound centered on swarming harmonies and acoustic guitars that churn like a paddlewheel and shimmer like heat waves on the highway.” —Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish are an awardwinning, nationally touring husband and wife folk duet with fresh, original songs focusing on vocal harmonies and tight instrumentation. Influenced by traditional Appalachian music and contemporary singer-songwriters, the Honey Dewdrops create music that is powerful and heartfelt. On their latest album, Tangled Country, the duo’s musical compatibility is vivid, leaving no doubt for reviews of their mesmerizing, evocative, genuine live performances. The culmination of three years of writing and arranging, Tangled Country proves that The Honey Dewdrops bear the mark of musical maturity – in performance, arrangement, and songwriting. The Flatlanders Fri, Nov 4 • 7:30pm

The fact that Texas music titans Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock - on their first go-round as The Flatlanders in 1972 - were rejected by the country music establishment is surprising in retrospect but, ultimately, poetic. That each went on to have formidable solo careers is a testament to their talent and determination. Their diverse yet complimentary styles – Joe the street-wise rocker, Jimmie Dale the mystic with the classic country voice and Butch the cerebral folk singer – reunited in the new millennium, with their comeback album Now Again spending 17 weeks at #1 on the Americana charts and 21 weeks on the Billboard Country charts. Mojo magazine dubbed them a “country Beatles,” while The Washington Post said, “Given the jaw-dropping quality of the disc, three decades almost seems a reasonable wait.” This will be a special acoustic performance showcasing the talents of what each member–cosmic cowboy Gilmore, rocker Ely, and song crafter Hancock–bring to the group. The end result is a sort of apotheosis of Texas music, a relaxed, creative show in which anything can happen and probably will. www.theflatlanders.com

Many knew Chris Wood as the virtuoso bass ace of avant-garde jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood—but that was before he joined with brother and guitarist Oliver Wood. Together, they created something organic and new. Their brand of Americana, a fusion of two different musical paths, has evolved from a genre-bending project into a highly popular full-time band, fusing Southern rock, American traditionals, New Orleans funk, and Manhattan freejazz seamlessly, flawlessly, lovingly. Since their inception, the Wood Brothers have developed from a stripped-down, roots-rock-inspired duo with jazz leanings to a rollicking trio capable of holding their own captivating theatres filled with a thousand fans. www.thewoodbros.com

New York Times bestselling author and humorist Michael Perry takes to the stage with a passel of stories that range well beyond the pages of his books. Whether discussing vicious chickens, homeless guinea pigs, long underwear for ladies, or getting your feelings hurt by the New York Times, Perry moves easily from the heartfelt to hilarious in an easygoing performance some have called “country stand-up.” He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an intermittent pig farmer. He hosts the nationally-syndicated “Tent Show Radio,” performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band the Long Beds. This night will be special, so he may wear a clean shirt. Well, a shirt anyway. Prior shows have sold out, so get your tickets early. www.sneezingcow.com

An Evening with Darrell Scott Fri, Nov 11 • 7:30pm

Darrell Scott is what you might call a stealth celebrity. Chances are you’ve never heard of this Nashville-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, but his deeply personal ballads of love, loss and longing have been top-10 hits for the Dixie Chicks (“Long Time Gone”) and Travis Tritt (“Great Day to be Alive”). He’s watched Faith Hill, Keb’ Mo’, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and other stars record his tunes, and he’s won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award, with several Grammy nominations to his credit. Scott, who plays in Robert Plant’s Band of Joy when not on tour with his own shows, is currently touring in support of his new CD Couchville Sessions. Scott’s performances are equal parts dynamic and powerful—for serious music lovers who love music straight from the soul. www.darrellscott.com

Robyn Hitchcock with Emma Swift Fri, Nov 18 • 7:30pm

One of England’s most enduring contemporary singer-songwriters, Robyn Hitchcock is a surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician’s musician who stands among alternative rock’s father figures. Since founding the art-rock band The Soft Boys in 1976, Robyn has recorded more than 20 albums. Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as ‘paintings you can listen to.’ Wandering songwriter Emma Swift is a fan of minor chords and endless pedal steel. With a tear in her voice filtered through ’70s mariachi static, Swift’s songs are equal parts heart-worn and careworn, modern, insouciant, witty and feminist. Emma’s debut album (nominated for an ARIA— Australian GRAMMY) is imbued with an easy smile, vulnerability and toughness calling to mind artists like Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt. www.robynhitchcock.com www.emmaswift.com.au

Mipso

Fri, Dec 2 • 7:30pm Renegade traditionalists Jacob Sharp (mandolin), Joseph Terrell (guitar), Libby Rodenbough (fiddle), and Wood Robinson (double bass) deliver powerfully rhythmic, lyrically sharp, and beautiful four-part harmonies as Mipso. The North Carolina-based indie folk band, influenced by the progressive vibes of Chapel Hill and its surrounding rural landscapes, mixes the complexities of traditional bluegrass with modern instrumentation and smart pop melodies. The result is the intoxicating blend of Americana filling their album Old Time Reverie. The 2015 album was named among the “Best Records of the Year” by The Guardian, for the band’s “aptitude for stunning harmonies” and “lush and moving songs that feel as fresh as a warm spring rain.” Old Time Reverie sees the quartet expanding its sonic resources while doubling down on experimentation with string band tradition in a gripping, mature reflection of musical and personal growth. www.mipsomusic.com

Sat, Dec 17 • 7:30pm

Willy’s signature finger-picking guitar work and rich songwriting creates a one-of-a-kind musical ride that has energized global audiences from stages shared with icons such as Jethro Tull, Tori Amos, Paul Simon, and Jeff Beck. The multiple WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) award winning guitarist honed his performance chops in the cafés and clubs around Madison, busking across Europe, and playing every little coffee house and dive bar on both sides of the Mississippi. Defying genres, he moves between slide blues, acoustic folk, grooving rock, and soulful pop with grace and equipoise. With his ability to read audiences so well, Willy Porter elicits a rare kind of communication between artist and audience. Sharing the stage is Carmen Nickerson, whose soulful vocals pair exquisitely with Porter’s grooves to produce soaring harmonies that add fresh layers and new depth to his songs. “Willy plays rhythms that make me want to crawl inside his guitar and sleep there forever.” Tori Amos www.willyporter.com

Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands

Fri, Jan 6, 2017 • 7:30pm One of bluegrass music’s stalwarts is singer, songwriter and fiddle player Laurie Lewis, a main-stay among Bay Area musicians since the mid-1970s. Lewis writes songs that cut through the noise; as one writer observed, “She does not sing inscrutably about her own life, but looks outward from an intimate perspective, in ways that let us see our own lives reflected back at us.” The members of the Right Hands give Lewis’ music a light, airy quality that complements the crystalline voice that twice won IBMA’s Female Vocalist of the Year. American folk music icon Utah Phillips put it best when he said of Laurie Lewis, “Whatever country music is supposed to be, she’s at the center of it.” www.laurielewis.com

Davina and the Vagabonds Fri, Feb 10 • 7:30pm

Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows, level A musicianship, sharp-dressed professionalism, and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Sowers is a true original. www.davinaandthevagabonds.com

Hot Club of Cowtown

Thurs, Feb 16 • 7:30pm Since its beginnings in the late 1990s, Hot Club of Cowtown’s star has continued to rise as its reputation for jaw-dropping virtuosity and unforgettable live shows has become the band’s global brand. The Hot Club of Cowtown is a hot jazz/western swing trio, comprising Elana James (vocals, violin), Whit Smith (vocals, guitar), and double bass player Jake Erwin, who sing together in three-part harmony. The band’s name comes from two sources: “Hot Club” from the hot jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli’s Hot Club of France, and “Cowtown” from the western influence of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys and the band’s love of fiddle tunes, hoedowns, and songs of the American west. The Hot Club of Cowtown’s new album “Midnight on the Trail” is a vintage mix of 12 Western swing songs and cowboy ballads hand-collected to reflect the spirit and joy of the American West. Utterly danceable, romantic and rustic, these songs truly represent the Cowtown of the Imagination, a source of inspiration for the band since it first began. www.hotclubofcowtown.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

The Kruger Brothers Fri, Feb 17 • 7:30 pm

Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age and were performing regularly at eleven and twelve years old. Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, The Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. The honesty of their writing has since become a hallmark of the trio’s work. In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) – The Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. Their original music is crafted around their discerning taste, and the result is unpretentious, cultivated, and delightfully fresh. The former child prodigy signed with Rounder at 13 and has traveled around the world sharing her music, playing rooms such as the White House, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Berklee gave her the school’s most prestigious award, the Presidential Scholarship (a first for a bluegrass musician), and now, finished with college, she has released ‘Weighted Mind,’ her long-anticipated fourth album, on which her ethereal voice and fluid playing take center stage. Cherish the Ladies Thurs, March 9 • 7:30pm

Grammy-nominated IrishAmerican super group Cherish the Ladies formed in New York City in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Irish music scene. The ladies have since toured the world, played the White House and the Olympics, and recorded 16 outstanding albums under the leadership of the dynamic and irrepressible flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden. Showcasing a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements, a sound the New York Times calls “passionate, tender, and rambunctious,” and stunning step dancing, it’s no surprise that Cherish the Ladies is one of the top Celtic groups in the world. www.cherishtheladies.com

The Subdudes Fri, March 10 • 7:30pm

Over the course of 25 years and ten albums, the Subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures. The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness — not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any five musicians. Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist, John Magnie, the Subdudes came together in 1989 after backing artists such as Joni Mitchell and Rosanne Cash. Drawing most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, and blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals, the Subdudes are also notable for the substitution of a tambourine player, Steve Amedée, for a drummer. Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass. www.subdudes.com

The Gibson Brothers

Sat, March 11 • 7:30pm The Gibson Brothers emerged onto the bluegrass scene plucking away with unfaltering determination and skill, Leigh on guitar and Eric on banjo. A blend of powerhouse harmonies and virtuosic picking, their live performance reflect their dedicated and developed musicianship. The twice-voted IBMA Entertainers of the Year have always been inspired by brother duos such as the Monroes, the Louvins, and the Everlys, whose close harmonies have captivated listeners for decades. Their 2015 album Brotherhood salutes such groups with songs spanning nearly a century of American music history from country, bluegrass, and early rock ‘n’ roll brother acts. The tradition of families singing together stretches back through the history of folk music, and with 20 years of professional musicianship behind them, the Gibson Brothers have established themselves as proud keepers of that musical heritage. www.gibsonbrothers.com

Tennessee Mafia Jug Band

Sat, March 25 Two Shows! 3:00pm & 7:00pm From the pastoral hills, hollers, shopping malls and interstate highways of Goodlettsville, Tennessee comes the most entertaining “blast from the past” since Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys. They’re the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band — five guys and a scrubboard, with roots like wisdom teeth. The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band presents a style of music and comedy that recalls old-time country musicians and television programs like Hee Haw, with the band wearing costumes, incorporating props into their shows, telling corny jokes with slapstick and family-friendly comedy. “Pap and the Jug Band,” a comicrelief feature from the Roy Acuff show, inspires the band’s stage show. They have appeared numerous times on the Grand Ole Opry and on the Marty Stuart Show on RFD-TV. If you like old time string band music, jug band music, or if you love good ole country hillbilly music, then the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band is for you! www.tennesseemafiajugband.com

Charlie Parr & Willy Tea Taylor Fri, March 24 • 7:30pm

Minnesota roots musician Charlie Parr is dedicated to the folk and blues traditions of an earlier era. The rural surroundings of his blue collar upbringing are reflected in his musical style and simple, honest lifestyle. Parr’s self-taught mix of slide, finger-picking and quasi-frailing technique, together with a voice that’s low on drama and high on impact, is something to behold. Folk singer-songwriter Willy Tea Taylor sings of profound subjects in a simple way. Much of that comes from his upbringing surrounded by rolling hills and horses in Oakdale, California, the small town Taylor calls home to this day. Saving Country Music says of his music, “it is hard to listen to and then say that better songs have ever been written”. Combine such lyrics with alluring melodies and a voice that ties them together with emotion as deep as his own roots, and you have Willy Tea Taylor. www.charlieparr.com www.willyteataylor.com

All productions are fully staged, sung in English and adapted especially for kids. Opera for the Young’s adaptation of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love moves the action to Lonesome Gulch, a town in the American Old West. Miss Addy, Jimmy Reno, and Bill Corey form the love triangle of the story, with Dr. Dulcamara appearing as the “snake oil” peddler who sells the love potion. Students from Kegonsa Elementary will perform on stage as the Justice of the Peace and the Soldier as well as the “Citizens of Lonesome Gulch.” Playful melodies and comical characters delight youngsters, while themes of bullying and substance abuse, as well as the age old wisdom of “being true to yourself,” generate thoughtful discussion. www.operafortheyoung.com

Asleep at the Wheel

Two Shows! • Thurs, April 20 & Fri, April 21 • 7:30pm Since the early ‘70s, Asleep at the Wheel has kept the sound of Western swing alive. In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, the Grammy-winning Wheel has earned enthusiastic critical praise throughout its lengthy career; not only has it preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music, but it has been able to update the music, keeping it a living, breathing art form. Typically featuring eight to 11 musicians, the group has gone through myriad changes (at last count, over 80 members had passed through the ranks), but frontman Ray Benson has held it together for four decades, keeping Asleep at the Wheel a viable recording and touring concern and maintaining its devotion to classic-style Western swing. www.asleepatthewheel.com

Caitlin Canty Sat, April 22 • 7:30pm

Caitlin Canty delivers her songs with a dusky alto and a 1930’s Recording King guitar. Her breakout record Reckless Skyline features songs that veer nimbly between country ballads and straight-up rockers, dark blues and sparsely arranged folk. Produced by Jeffrey Foucault, Reckless Skyline garnered glowing praise from NPR, and The San Francisco Chronicle lauded Canty’s, “casually devastating voice and unshakable poise,” and her “easy way with folk, blues and country motifs.” Canty won the 2015 Telluride Troubadour songwriting contest, and she writes and performs with several bands including Down Like Silver, her duo with Peter Bradley Adams. Both on the road and on her records, Canty creates a sound that harnesses the grit and spark at the very heart of American music, tempered with a voice both haunting and distinct. www.caitlincanty.com

Bogguss is one of country music’s most pristine and evocative vocalists, with a witty charm, stunningly versatile voice, and intimate stage manner. With her new album Lucky, released on her own label Loyal Dutchess, the singer returns to her early inspiration, Merle Haggard. www.suzybogguss.com

Hal Ketchum Fri, April 28 • 7:30pm

Five years ago, Hal Ketchum packed up his guitars and left Nashville, turning his back on a successful, 20+ year career in country music. He’d already sold more than 5 million albums, racking up a half-dozen Top 10 hits along the way. But Ketchum was exhausted. Try as he might, though, he couldn’t stop his musical wheels from spinning. As he sat, on the porch of his home, new songs began appearing. The process felt entirely different from his final years in Nashville, when songwriting had been a job. This time around, songwriting was something more. It was personal. It was casual. And Ketchum decided he wasn’t ready to give up music, after all. Those new songs became the foundation of I’m the Troubadour. Recorded in a series of single takes, the album is the sound of an artist finding redemption in the strum of an acoustic guitar, the boom of a kick drum, and the trill of an upright piano. It’s an album inspired by years of struggle, performed by a songwriting legend who’s glad to finally get his groove back. www.halketchum.com

April Verch Band

3:00 PM

Sat, April 29 • 7:30pm

Moving from exuberant stepdancer to fiddle wunderkind and silvervoiced singer, Verch has never been content to stand still. Her victories in Canada’s Open Old Time Fiddle Championship and Grand Masters Fiddling Competition made her the first woman to take both of the country’s top contests. On her tenth album The Newpart, Verch digs deep into songs and tunes from the era before the often-mined midcentury heyday of bluegrass and folk. Harkening back to vaudeville and beyond, Verch and her fellow trio members pare down their arrangements, highlighting the simple pleasures of upright bass, guitar, clawhammer banjo, mandolin, voices, fiddle, and stepping in intimate conversation. At the heart lie Verch’s delicate soprano, energetic footwork, and stunning playing, a trifecta of talents she brings together simultaneously for the first time on stage. With ten albums and years of touring under her belt, Verch has moved from upstart prodigy to mature and reflective songwriter, interpreter, and storyteller. www.aprilverch.com

At 69, Ray Wylie Hubbard’s post-psycho-country approach to drifter’s rock is more raw-boned and rough-hewn than ever. Guitars hiss, sting, and slash, and the haunted, tribal beats underscore a voice of parched earth. The Texas original continues to write, record, perform, produce, tour, and score movies with the same wily spirit trademarked in the early 70s. Since then, he’s released 17 albums, including his latest, The Ruffian’s Misfortune. The reviews describe Ray Wylie as “one of the most strikingly original musicians in the country,” praising his “taut, dynamic, and compelling” music. He’s a presence you won’t soon forget, and his songs have a gritty intensity that will stay with you for a good long while. www.raywylie.com

The Midwest Gypsy Swing Fest On-TheRoad

Featuring Harmonious Wail and the Robin Nolan Trio Sat, May 6 • 7:30pm Based in Amsterdam, the Robin Nolan Trio is an all-acoustic gypsy jazz band inspired by Django Reinhardt. Personally endorsed by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, and George Harrison (who regularly hired them to perform at his estate), RNT has played some of the world’s most prestigious musical events. The trio, while rooted in gypsy jazz, Latin, and Hot Club de France, has a decidedly contemporary feel, peppered with hypnotic rhythms and rippling melodic themes. Though richly influenced by European gypsy musicians, Madison’s own Harmonious Wail bursts through the boundaries of the genre with its enticing arrangements and sheer joy. Smoldering vocals are laced with jazzy mandolin and guitar for an infectious blend of continental jazz, swing, and gypsy music. Harmonious Wail has won multiple Madison Area Music Association (MAMA) awards. www.wail.com www.robinnolanmusic.com

Founded on Jan. 26, 1925, the chorus was originally known as the Grieg Mannskor (Grieg Men’s Chorus). While singing Norwegian songs has been the primary focus of the Chorus, sacred and secular songs are also included in its repertoire.
