Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their own homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. It is not a specific disease. Instead, dementia is an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common dementia type. There are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies.

Dementia is often incorrectly referred to as “senility” or “senile dementia,” which reflects the formerly widespread but incorrect belief that serious mental decline is a normal part of aging.

Symptoms of Dementia While symptoms of dementia can vary greatly, at least two of the following core mental functions must be significantly impaired to be considered dementia: * Memory * Communication and language * Ability to focus and pay attention * Reasoning and judgment * Visual perception People with dementia may have difficulty with short-term memory, keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing

Many dementias are progressive, meaning symptoms start out slowly and gradually get worse. If you or a loved one is experiencing memory difficulties or other changes in thinking skills, don’t ignore them. See a doctor soon to determine the cause. Professional evaluation may detect a treatable condition. And even if symptoms suggest dementia, early diagnosis allows a person to get the maximum benefit from available treatments and provides an opportunity to volunteer for clinical trials or studies. Early detection also provides time to plan for the future.

Causes of Dementia Dementia is caused by damage to the brain cells.

This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. When brain cells cannot communicate normally, thinking, behavior and feelings can be affected.

Different types of dementia are associated with particular types of brain cell damage in particular regions of the brain. For example, in Alzheimer’s disease, high levels of certain proteins inside and outside make it hard for brain cells to stay healthy and to communicate with each other. The brain region called the hippocampus is the center of learning and memory in the brain, and the brain cells in this region are often the first to be damaged. That’s why memory loss is often one of the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

While most changes in the brain that cause dementia are permanent and worsen over time, thinking and memory problems caused by the following conditions may improve when the condition is treated or addressed: * Depression * Medication side effects * Excess use of alcohol * Thyroid problems * Vitamin deficiencies

News: Case Management Information Dementia Risk and Prevention

Dementia Help & Support

Some risk factor for dementia, such as age and genetics, cannot be changed. But researchers continue to explore the impact of other risk factors on brain health and prevention of dementia. Some of the most active areas of research in risk prevention include cardiovascular factors, physical fitness and diet.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with dementia, you are not alone. The Alzheimer’s Association and Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin are two agencies that provide resources for information, education, advocacy and support to those coping with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, their families and caregivers.

Cardiovascular risk factors: Your brain is nourished by one of your body’s richest networks of blood vessels. Anything that damages blood vessels anywhere in your body can damage blood vessels in your brain, depriving brain cells of vital food and oxygen. Blood vessel changes in the brain are linked to vascular dementia.

They often are present along with changes caused by other types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. These changes may interact to cause faster decline or make impairments more severe.

You can help protect your brain with some of the same strategies that protect your heart -don’t smoke; take steps to keep your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar within recommended limits; and maintain a healthy weight.

Physical Exercise: Regular physical exercise may help lower the risk of some types of dementia. Evidence suggests exercise may directly benefit brain cells by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain.

Diet: What you eat may have the greatest impact on brain health through its effect on heart health. The best current evidence suggests that a heart healthy eating pattern, such as the Mediterranean diet, also may help protect the brain. A Mediterranean diet includes relatively little red meat and emphasizes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish, and nuts, olive oil and other healthy fats.

Memory Café Coming this Summer!

A Memory Café is a social gathering place for people with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer’s, or other dementia and their family and friends.

Cafés meet once a month in a relaxed environment to visit, share common interests and enjoy refreshments. Activities will be chosen by participants, depending on their interests. For more information please contact Hollee Camacho at 873-8585.

Avocados Facts An avocado is a fruit.

It is actually a single-seeded berry.  An avocado has more potassium than a banana. A single avocado has 975 milligrams of potassium!  One avocado has 4 grams of protein.  Avocados will ripen faster when stored in a brown bag with a banana or apple.  Avocados can be swapped out for butter in recipes. Here are the tips for how: When substituting avocado for butter, a one-toone ratio is recommended. A tablespoon of avocado replaces a tablespoon of butter.

Mash up the avocado to make it as smooth as possible. Because avocado is a bit drier than butter, you may want to increase the wet ingredients slightly. Many avocado enthusiasts recommend replacing half of the butter with avocado. In other words, if your recipe calls for four tablespoons of butter, replace it using 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of avocado. If you’re fully replacing butter with avocado, reduce your cooking temperature by 25 degrees to prevent burning. 

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: Avocado Fries Canola oil, for frying ¼ teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 ¼ cups panko breadcrumbs 2 firm-ripe avocados, cut into ½ inch wedges and peeled ¼ cup flour Pour oil to a depth of 1½ inches in a fry pan.

Heat to 375 degrees, over med-high heat.

Meanwhile combine the flour and salt in a shallow plate. Put the eggs and panko into separate shallow plates. Dip the avocado wedges in flour, shaking off excess. Dip in egg, and then dredge in the panko to coat. Fry in batches for 30-60 seconds.

Nutrition Program Information: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Nutrition Site: The Center serves lunch Mon. thru Fri. at 12:00 PM. Menu pg.15.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Meal Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations must be made by 1:00 PM on the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the County/Senior Center.

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for March 3, 2015 Meetings are Open to the Public

Center News: Staff is beginning to become a Dementia Friendly Community. We will be meeting with other City Leaders to determine our 2015 goals.

Action Plan: Mission Statement Motion made and passed to keep the Senior Center mission statement as it is.

Action Plan: COA & Committee Recruitment Discussed ways to increase COA participation.

Syttende Mai: Report on building use policies at other Centers and proposals for securing the building during the parades. The Center will be open by COA members for parade viewing.

Senior Center Brochure: Discussed suggestions for improving the latest brochure draft for optimal clarity and readability. Suggestions for black type on white background and bullet pts.

2014 Annual Report: Draft distributed for review. Will be available to public before April.

Legislative Update:  Distributed an AARP handout highlighting effects of the State Budget on older adult services like Senior Care, Family Care, BadgerCare Childless Adult Program.  Discussed concerns of privatizing ADRCs –Aging & Disability Resource Centers; will this change the current no fee, unbiased referrals service?  Senate Bill 19,which would allow people to designate if they want their caregivers to receive medical information and instructions from their doctors was introduced, but it is not receiving signatures.

MARCH SUPPORT EVENTS Yoga & Parkinson’s Weds., April 22, 1:30 PM Yoga’s slow, focused movements, breathing awareness and relaxation techniques improves your flexibility, balance, strength, mood and sleep. Come learn some yoga practices for those living with Parkinson’s disease. Local yoga instructor, Jill Izydor will provide a demonstration of Chair Yoga, which adapts traditional yoga poses to make them more accessible.

Peer Support Peer Support volunteers meet with homebound or isolated adults to help provide needed social support through friendly home visits and/or participation in social events.

April 20: “Clocks in Motion,” new Percussion Ensemble at UW-Madison that is making waves in the musical world. Their cutting edge music has been commissioned by composers.

April 27: The Pro Arte String Quartet, from UW-Madison has performed around the world including Belgium which is where the group was founded by their queen in1914. Having no home to go back to while on tour in the US when WWII broke out, the UW invited them to stay and they became the first college with a professional string quartet in residence.

March Highlights Tuesdays: Sugar & Spice Eatery Caters The Food for Thought Survey results show that 70% of its respondents would like the Senior Center to offer other healthy options like soup, salads and sandwiches.

Main Street Kitchen provided us with a monthly trial in March, and Sugar & Spice Eatery has offered to do the same every Tuesday in April.

Menu items will include a 4" sub sandwich and your choice of a cup of soup or pasta salad. The cost will be $5.00. A list of the weekly options will be available at the Center soon. Lunch reservations will need to be made by noon on the day before. Please call 873-8585 for more information, or to place an order.

This is a pilot program, and if it’s successful, will become a regular meal offering. If you know of other catering services that may want to be involved with this pilot program please call the Senior Center with your ideas.

Car Cleaning Clinic Saturday, April 11 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM The Stoughton High School Student Senate will be cleaning all the winter grime out of cars during a Car Cleaning Clinic. Students will vacuum and wipe all interior surfaces, to give your car a fresh start to Spring!

There are limited slots available for this service, so call to make your appointment today 8738585. Donations are welcome.

New Chair Yoga Class Tuesdays, 8:00-8:45 AM at Covenant Lutheran Church Chair yoga adapts traditional yoga poses to make them more accessible. The yoga poses are done with more support and stability through use of the chair. Poses are done seated on the chair or standing using the chair for support. Individualized modifications will be offered throughout the class depending on specific needs of the participants. $3-5 dollar suggested donation
