Have you tested your home for radon lately? Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that can lead to serious health issues if not detected. Radon testing in your home is very important because adults and children are exposed to the gas in their homes, and according to the U.S Surgeon General, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country. The Southeastern Wisconsin Radon Information Center has 5 important facts about radon that you should know. The information comes directly from the organization’s pamphlet: 1. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths each year in the U.S. 2. Every home should be tested for radon. The levels in any particular home cannot be predicted, but high levels have been found in every type of home in every region of the state. 3. Radon kits are inexpensive, readily available and easy to use. Hardware stores, building centers, and other retailers sell radon kits. They can also be mail ordered from the Southeastern Wisconsin Radon Information Center. 4. Radon levels can be reduced to less than the EPA guidelines in virtually every home. 5. The Southeastern Wisconsin Radon Information Center can help you with information about radon. For more information, contact the SE WI Radon Information Center by calling (262) 896-8300 or (800) 567-2366 or by visiting their website at www.waukeshacounty.gov/eh.

Relying on “Lojong” -- a Tibetan Buddhist mind-training practice -- we will transform stress and worry into energy for peace and stability. Venerable Chodon, will lead us through discussing the daily challenges we meet and examine methods for working with anger, fear, anxiety, and confusion. Erik Larson is a music historian, having extensively studied the Big Band Era covering the 1920s through the early 1950s. His music presentations feature the original recordings while sharing interesting and little known facts about the bands, their leaders, vocalists and ballrooms. Additionally, he invites audience questions, reminiscences and guesses as to the singer or band he is playing. He has been entertaining audiences, young and old, for nearly two decades. Erik is a speaker with Arizona Humanities and has served with two big band radio stations, one over Chicago and the other over Greater Los Angeles.

Kitchen Corner MUSHROOMS: How to enjoy them and nutritional information

1. Sauté. Easy as 1, 2, 3! Brush pan lightly with oil and heat on high. 2. Grill and Broil. Best for larger capped mushrooms. Lightly brush caps and stems with oil and season as desired. Grill or broil 4 to 6 inches from heat source for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, brushing once or twice. 3. Roast for Flavor. Roasting mushrooms is perfect for multitasking cooks. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Brush mushrooms with oil [about 1 tablespoon of oil for each 8 ounces of mushrooms]. Place mushrooms on a shallow baking pan in oven. Stir occasionally until brown, about 20 minutes. 4. Steam in the Microwave. Place 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms in a microwaveable bowl. Cover and cook on 100% power for 2-3 minutes. 5. Freshen Up Your Meals. Toss fresh mushrooms in your everyday meals like lasagna or soup to add key nutrients with no fat, little calories and no cholesterol. 6. Sandwich Swap. Cut slices of Portabella mushrooms for your favorite sandwich instead of meat for a healthy inexpensive swap. 7. Mushroom Chips! Try noshing on some delicious mushroom chips dipped in a warm pesto sauce. 8. Save for Later. Sauté fresh mushrooms and store them in the freezer for up to a month. Fresh, uncooked mushrooms should never be frozen. 9. Bag the Burger. Try swapping your burger for a grilled Portabella on a bun with your favorite condiments..
