News: Case Management Services Information Spring Cleaning — It’s not Just for Your House by the GWAAR Legal Services Team (for reprint) This is the time of year when most people start to clean out their homes and donate or sell unneeded items. Garage sales become abundant as people organize and sort through old clothes, household goods, and furnishings. Spring is also a good season to review powers of attorney as well as beneficiary designations on insurance and assets to ensure the documents you have in place reflect your wishes.
Powers of Attorney Preparing and signing a power of attorney can seem like a daunting task — one that people are relieved to cross off their “to do” list and have completed. However, planning for incapacity is a process, not a one-time event. Anytime there are significant changes in one’s life, it is recommended to revisit and perhaps update these important documents. Honoring Choices of Wisconsin (honoringchoiceswi.org) recommends that people update their planning documents whenever one of these four events occurs:
Decade (every 10 years) Death of a loved one Divorce Diagnosis or decline
Anytime you experience one of these life changes — a new diagnosis or health decline, a divorce, or death of a loved one — it is vital that you update your powers of attorney. Wisconsin law presumes that a person would not want an ex-spouse to act as an agent under a power of attorney. However, if the former spouse was the only agent listed or the only other agent named
had passed away, then the documents do not serve the purpose for which they were drafted. Additionally, the law changes from time to time, so it’s always a good idea to review power of attorney documents at least every 10 years to ensure they are up to date. NOTE: Powers of attorney documents cannot be modified once signed. Making changes to the already-signed documents may invalidate them altogether. Instead, have new documents drafted and signed.
Beneficiary Designations Life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and certain investment accounts typically pass to a person designated as the beneficiary upon the death of the account holder. Many people fill out the beneficiary designation form when the account is first established and then fail to review this selection down the road. It is important to review the named beneficiaries on these accounts as time passes. If the listed beneficiary passes away, subsequently divorces you, or is no longer close with you, you may want to name a new beneficiary. Even if you have already drafted a will or a trust, it is still important to update the beneficiary designations on your accounts because these assets do NOT pass by virtue of your will or trust. These assets are like a contract that is paid out upon your death and the contract dictates who will get the money upon your death. NOTE: Each company has its own form to designate a beneficiary. To review or change your beneficiary, call the customer service department for each individual account or policy you have. Changes to beneficiary designations are usually not considered completed until they are put in writing, signed, mailed, and received back by the company. Published with permission from the Legal Services Team at the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources’ Elder Law & Advocacy Center.

News: Case Management Information much sturdier than plastic or glass lenses and are the preferred lenses for sport sunglasses. They are also lightweight and hard to break. Test the sunglasses’ lenses quality by focusing on a straight line on your calendar or on the floor, moving the sunglasses up and down and side to side. If the line ever wiggles or distorts, try to find another sturdier pair. Choose comfort over fashion. The ultimate goal of buying a good pair of sunglasses is that you can wear them! If you find out after a day of wearing your shades that they hurt your ears or give you headaches, return them and find a more comfortable pair. In addition, find the color tint that gives you the most contrast and is the most comfortable for your eyes; not just dark tinted glasses block against UV rays.
Find Some Shades In Celebration of Cataract Awareness Month According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), more than half of Americans will either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery by age 80. A cataract is when the eye’s lens becomes clouded, directly affecting a person’s vision. The risk of cataracts increases as you get older. Other risks factors for Americans to develop a cataract in their lifetime are those who have a disease like diabetes, smoke, and those who don’t protect their eyes when they’re in the sunlight. The Council’s Education and Vision Services Director Jean Kalscheur recommends that this summer, people choose an effective, ultraviolet (UV) light-blocking pair of shades to help prevent cataracts. Below are three tips to ensure you buy a good pair of sunglasses: Confirm that the sunglasses offer 100% UV-A and UV-B protection. Just like at the grocery store, read the label! Some labels will tell you they are 100% UV resistant, and others will say they have UV absorption up to 400nm, which also means they offer full protection. If the label doesn’t include this information, odds are theses shades don’t block against dangerous UV light.
Make sure the lenses are quality. If the lenses are flimsy, they may skew the images you’re looking at. Polycarbonate lenses are

Now that we’ve offered some tips, it’s up to you to live well and protect your eyes. The Council’s Sharper Vision Store carries clip-ons/flip-ups, fitovers, and standard frames with UV blocking lenses at our store in Madison as well as online at www.wcblind.org/shopping. Other sources for sun glasses with UV protection in a range of tints include your optometrist’s office, an eye glass store, and your local sporting goods store. We also recommend reading about Theresa’s experience going through cataract surgery at our blog, The Outlook From Here: http://tinyurl.com/ CataractExperience Written by Michelle Roach, Writer at Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired
