News: Case Management Information SEPTEMBER IS SENIOR CENTER MONTH: Why have Senior Centers? Reaching retirement age; be it 62, 65, or 67, may be seen as the magic time when a person’s life can become one of fun and relaxation. No more having to get up and get to work at a certain time every day. For some, not having a work schedule to follow becomes boring fast. What to do with all the free time becomes a problem. For others, being on limited funds takes away some of the fun times they always thought they would be able to enjoy. If health is an issue the free time becomes Dr.’s visits, which are no fun at all. Wading through the various insurance and Medicare regulations and options is more work than work ever was. Where to go, who to talk to? Friends that one counted on growing old with may have passed or moved. Family may be spread out, separated by many miles. Senior Centers offer a place to meet new people with similar interests. Stop in the Senior Center for coffee and a treat. You might end up talking with the Mayor or Police Chief. Maybe a person used to belong to a card group that had to disband. The Senior Center may offer the opportunity to play cards. Remember playing chess, dominoes, bingo, bunco, Canasta, Sheepshead, Euchre, Bridge, Cribbage, etc.? Maybe there are games already being played on a weekly basis at the Senior Center. Maybe a new group can be started—gin rummy anyone? To go to a gym may be costly as well as intimidating where all the young women are size 4 and all the men have abs and no paunches. Exercising with people closer together in age or doing line dancing to music with a story may be more inviting. Check out the Chair Stretch, Tai Chi-(beginning or advanced), walking club, ping pong, or Zumba. Meeting with people to discuss a book or write stories or paint or color may be something there was never time for before. 4

Maybe a spouse or other loved one needs a lot of assistance to make it through a day and helping them is important. But you need a place to discuss dealing with the situation and the ramifications of the health issue. Caregiving Support Groups at the Senior Center may provide some answers. Instead of being able to relax, questions about Medicare Benefits, Supplementary Insurance, Medicare D, and budgeting keep you up at night. Programs offered at the Senior Center provide the opportunity to learn about different options without the pressure of dealing one-on-one with an Insurance Representative. Perhaps talking with a person one-on-one who has no vested interest in selling anything can provide some options. Need help applying for FoodShare, BadgerCare, Medicaid, Social Security Benefits, Senior Care Insurance, Medicare D Insurance? Need help with accessing a Food Pantry or another assistance program? Have you received a bill from a hospital or a service provider that you don’t understand? Are you a Veteran and wondering about possible benefits you may be eligible for by virtue of your service? Do you have questions about Power of Attorney options, writing a will, burial trusts? Case Managers at the Senior Center can help make contact with specialists that may meet you at the Center to help you make plans. They can also refer you on to other knowledgeable resources you may need. Find yourself eating alone all the time and sick of making all your own meals? Communal meals at the Senior Center may lead to new acquaintances and new interests. Or, at least, someone to discuss daily news. Also, the Lunch Bunch may offer a place to try with a group that you wouldn’t try by yourself.

News: Case Management Information Did you bowl but now the ball is too heavy, and besides, who wants to go to an alley alone? Check out Wii Bowling at the Senior Center. What about movies, musical entertainment? Call the Center or check with this newsletter. It’s distributed about town regarding what is going to be happening in the next month at the Center. Did you ever play pool or work with wood? The Senior Center has two pool tables and some nice wood-working equipment. Pass a safety course and there are a number of people who will work with you in the Woodshop. Do you knit, crochet, or do stitching? Do you have an interest in wood carving or rosemaling? Join a group once a week to work on projects and meet people with similar interests. Have you just been diagnosed with Parkinson’s; lost someone close to you; or are losing your vision; have diabetes; or a heart condition? There may be a group of people dealing with the same problems already meeting at the Senior Center. Or, there may be other people that have a similar disability challenging them and a new group can be set up at the Center. Is alcohol a problem for you? AA for older adults meets at the Senior Center once a week. Would you like to do something for someone in your spare time? Volunteer to help deliver Meals on Wheels, lead a discussion group, teach a skill, answer the Senior Center phone, work at packing up lunches to be delivered, serve and clean-up after lunch in the Center kitchen; or help someone pay bills, file important papers, pick up groceries, or play a game with, or just visit. All are needed and greatly appreciated. Do you need to borrow a walker or wheelchair or shower bench, or cane for a few weeks after surgery or an injury? The Senior Center Loan Closet is located upstairs. Incontinence supplies

are available for your personal needs. Do you like to put jigsaw puzzles together? There is always one on the table at the Senior Center. Do you need to have your blood pressure checked or your toenails trimmed and it is not something you can do on your own anymore? The Senior Center has professionals who come to the Center to do that. Do you need a ride to the Grocery Store, the Clinic, etc.? The Center can connect you with possible transportation options that are less expensive than a cab, especially if you have to go out of town. Are you finding you would like to learn how to operate a computer to be able to communicate with friends and family who are far away; or, be able to order goods and supplies without having to go to the stores? The Senior Center has computers you can use and people to help you learn how to use them. Would you like to speak some Norwegian? There is a weekly class at the Senior Center. The above mentioned activities and services are all available at the Stoughton Area Senior Center. There are other activities that occur periodically such as: special entertainment, speakers who come to talk about particular areas of interest: music, history, current events, medical conditions, new technology, resources, and how to obtain them. Interested in a tour of Epic at Verona? Interested in going to a play at the Fireside in Fort Atkinson? September is Senior Center Month – why not come and check it out? Why have a Senior Center? For ALL of the activities and services described above. Written by JoAnn Seymour Case Manager Stoughton Area Senior Center And Senior Adult Extraordinaire

Dr. Bernard Micke with the Wisconsin Medical Project The Wisconsin Medical Project (WMP) started in 2003 and provides humanitarian aid to hospitals and clinics in Cuba and Africa. Dr. Micke has been coming to Stoughton and other areas throughout Dane County on a monthly basis, picking up donated wheelchairs, crutches, canes and other requested supplies. These items are then inspected and ensured to be in working order and sent off to the various locations. We appreciate the time Dr. Micke takes to keep those unused items out of landfills and to bring them to those in need! Food Pantry & Dan Metz – When the Food Pantry receives more food than they can use, they drop it off here so that it doesn’t go to waste. Also, each week Dan Metz makes several deliveries to the Senior Center and to other locations in town with items area groceries would otherwise throw away. Countless people have benefited from Dan and food pantry volunteers’ kindness and the time they spend picking up and dropping off baked goods, vegetables, fruit and other items. 12

RadioShack - The Stoughton Area Senior Center has been participating in a fundraising project sponsored by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and Cellular Recycler that recycles unwanted cell phones, laptops, cameras, mp3 players and video game consoles. The donations help the environment by keeping harmful chemicals out of our landfills and 90% of all proceeds have benefited our Senior Center. Since beginning in August 2006 we have collected over 1,000 cell phones and have raised over $9,800! Our success is due to our giving community members, and especially from the support of Dan Hanson of Hanson Electronics/ RadioShack of Stoughton, who supplies us with boxes of their customers’ unwanted cell phones. We are thankful for Dan Hanson and all other contributors for their support!

Bean Bag Toss-Cornhole Mon., Sept. 12 & 26, 11:00 AM Starting this month come and join us the 2nd and 4th Mondays to play Bean Bag Toss (aka Cornhole). This lawn game has players take turns throwing bags of corn (or beans) at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point. Come join the fun!
