Millions of people give their time, talent and energy to help strengthen communities around the world. Our volunteers range from young adults to older adults, to businesses and community organizations, and they all share the common act of choosing to make a difference. It is through their stories that people are inspired to serve and begin to recognize their personal power to transform themselves and the world around them. We thank all our dedicated hard working volunteers who truly make a difference in the life of the Stoughton Area Senior Center.

News: Case Management Services Beware: Social Security Scam As many people know, all Social Security beneficiaries must sign up for electronic payments by March 1, 2013. While this should make the system safer, quicker and more convenient it’s still very important to protect yourself from potential scams. Earlier this week I was contacted by a constituent after her monthly direct deposit Social Security check failed to show up in her bank account. It appeared as if someone might have fraudulently obtained her personal information and used it to divert her check into another bank account. The local Social Security office resolved the issue and the Social Security Office of the Inspector General is investigating the case, but it serves as a reminder to everyone how important it is to protect your personal financial information. Unfortunately, she is not alone in being concerned she was the victim of a Social Security scam. According to the Social Security Administration, there are a number of scams that are used that target people who depend on Social Security benefits. In one such scam, individuals posing as Social Security employees call and ask for personal information like your name, Social Security number and bank account information. The caller alleges that they need this information to issue additional funds or rebates, or they allege that because of a computer glitch personal information has been lost. Another scam uses an email designed to look like it came from the Social Security Administration to direct readers to a website where people are asked to “update their information” that can then be used by identity thieves and criminals.
And these are just two of the many scams that target Social Security beneficiaries. When dealing with Social Security, please know that Social Security will never send you an email asking for personal information, such as your Social Security number, date of birth, or other private information. If someone from Social Security does email you requesting information, don’t respond to the message. Instead, contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213. You can also report suspicious activity to Social Security Office of the Inspector General Fraud Hotline at 1-800269-0271 or online at http://oig.ssa.gov/reportfraud-waste-or-abuse/fraud-waste-and-abuse. As Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, I take seriously my responsibility to safeguard the appropriate delivery and receipt of the millions of Social Security checks for the seniors and elderly citizens who are served by the Social Security Administration. I will continue to work to make sure that the system is as safe and secure as possible. Source: Senator Herb Kohl’s enewsletter;hl_enewsletter@kohl.senate.gov

Spring Cleaning Your Office: How Long to Keep Records Excerpts from: Kiplinger's Personal Finance, www.kiplinger.com and Pam Weston of msn.money.com
Spring is a great time of year to get rid of outdated files and to organize your records. It’s important to know what kinds of paperwork and documentation you can toss, what you should keep, and for how long. Review your year-end statements to make sure they accurately reflect the monthly statements you received from your bank, broker and other financial institutions. Then you can toss the monthly statements. Keep those year-end statements in your tax files for at least three years after the due date of your return (or six years if you’re self-employed). Although it’s recommended that you keep your tax returns for at least six years, you may want to hold on to them forever (or at least a digital archive of them), because they can provide clues about your income and investments and other tax information that might come in handy in the distant future. If you have any selfemployment income, keep your receipts for at least six years. For all loans, including mortgages, you can ditch monthly or quarterly statements once you get the year-end summaries, and you can destroy the year-end summaries when you've paid off the loans. However, you should keep indefinitely the final notice showing a loan has been paid off in case a disorganized lender or unscrupulous collector pretends the debt hasn't been paid and tries to dun you. 4
For insurance purposes, keep receipts and appraisals for big purchases as long as you own the items. If you are in a traditional pension, hang onto any correspondence you get about it. Employers do go out of business! Important documents like birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce papers and military discharge papers should be kept for life. Toss ATM and bank deposit receipts after you reconcile them with bank statements. Once a purchase shows up on your credit card statement, you can ditch the slip. Toss paper copies of bills as soon as the next month’s bill acknowledging your last payment arrives (unless you need to keep the bills for taxes). When you get a new Social Security statement, ditch the old one. You may also want to keep your Medicare Summary Notices until the bill and claims have been paid in full. Hang on to receipts for major home improvements. Ditch your pay stubs as soon as you receive your W-2 for the year. And when you do decide to toss any of these papers, be sure to shred them so your garbage doesn’t become a treasure trove for identity thieves.

Lisa’s
Kitchen Corner
Pecans, A Good For You Snack
Recipe of the Month
Pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals and they are cholesterol-free. Pecans contain approximately the same amount of protein and nutrients as meat, poultry, fish, beans and seeds. Eating 20 pecan halves equals two servings from the meat and bean group and 2 teaspoons of heart healthy fat.
Buttered Pecan Popcorn
Sprinkle pecans on top of your yogurt for more zinc and vitamin E. Have pecans for an afternoon snack, you will feel fuller longer and they provide long-lasting energy because they contain heart healthy mono and polyunsaturated fats. Plus a handful of pecans provide as much fiber as a medium sized apple. Instead of chips, eat a handful of pecans, which are naturally sodium-free.
8 cups popped popcorn Nonstick cooling spray ½ cup pecan pieces 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/3 cup light corn syrup ¼ cup instant butter pecan pudding mix (dry) ¼ teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. After popping, discard un-popped popcorn kernels. Spray a 17x12x2” with nonstick cooking spray. Place the popped corn and pecans in the pan. In a separate pan, heat butter and corn syrup, then stir in pudding mix and vanilla. Pour mixture over popcorn. Bake in oven at 300 degrees for 16 minutes, stirring halfway through baking. Remove pan from oven and turn mixture onto a large piece of parchment paper. Cool popcorn completely. When cool, break into large pieces and serve.

Grief Workshop Join Thomas Moe from Southern Care Hospice on April 17th at 5:00 p.m. at the Senior Center for a discussion on the “Tasks of Grieving”. Over the years we have come to realize that grief is not merely a series of stages but, instead, it is a process. The grief process is individual to the person experiencing it. People express their loss in numerous ways and what is considered normal grief continues to evolve. Our goal is to discover the various tasks we must undertake in grieving. Tasks of grieving is a broad program that can help you understand yourself, your previous losses, and your means of discovering healing. Everyone is welcome.

Legislative Update: Cindy noted that Dane County is still determining their plan to introduce the State’s mandated Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC). Unlike other counties, Dane County is having a difficult time accepting the conditions and determining the best way to structure it with the already well-established (25+ years) case management focal point program. The Bureau of Aging & Disability Resources is seeking citizen representation for a taskforce to revitalize Wisconsin’s Elderly NutritionProgram. The deadline to submit applications is March 23. If you would like an application form, contact Helen at 608-286-6337 or hmdicks@aarp.org If you are aware of anyone struggling with getting a voter id, please check with us. “Have you heard? Prevention is the best medicine.” That’s the belief of the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation Grapevine Project. The goals are to help women and their families reach their healthiest potential and become advocates for their own health and improve the overall quality of life for women and their families. One of the ways the WWHF works to accomplish these goals is by providing programs that focus on education, prevention, and early detection. Two parish nurses in Stoughton want to bring the Grapevine health programs to Stoughton women. Sue Richards, Parish Nurse at Covenant Lutheran Church and Jane Jenson, Faith Community Nurse at Lake View Church are partnering to provide the following units to women at the Stoughton Senior Center over the next few months: MAY 24 at 1:00 PM: Oral Health Women receive information on oral health and how it affects your overall health. A toothbrush and toothpaste are given as incentives. JUNE 28 at 1:00 PM: Bone Health Women receive information on osteoporosis including signs, symptoms and how to prevent it. Exercise bands for weightbearing and muscle-strengthening exercises are given as incentives. Please register for the class at 873-8585
