Case Management Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

An estimated 3.3 million Americans will live in the nation's nearly 16,000 nursing homes during 2013. That number translates to 1 in 7 people ages 65 and up, and more than 1 in 5 of those are 85 and older. They and their families will want and need a way to find a source of the best possible care. For many, it won't be easy.

To help them, U.S. News has collected meaningful data and ratings about nearly every nursing facility in the United States, and built from them a searchable database designed to highlight the highest-rated homes likely to meet each user's needs.

The data behind Best Nursing Homes come from Nursing Home Compare, a website run by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. CMS sets and enforces standards for nursing homes enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid, as most are. The agency also collects information from states and individual homes and assigns each home a rating of one to five stars in each of three categories: state-conducted health inspections, nursing and physical therapy staffing, and quality of medical care. The ratings are combined to produce an overall rating of one to five stars.

With so many Americans utilizing these facilities during times when quality healthcare is so critical, it’s important to be an informed and educated consumer.

April Means Planning for Severe Weather Excerpted from the State of Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs Division of Emergency Management

Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed the week of April 15-19, 2013 as Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin. Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually. It’s important to have a plan at home, at work, and when you’re away. Keep these simple tips in mind: · In a home or building, move to a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement and get under a sturdy table or the stairs. If a basement is not available, move to a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and cover yourself with anything close at hand: towels, blankets, pillows. If possible, get under a sturdy table, desk or counter. Put as many walls as possible between you and the storm. Stay away from windows. · If caught outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you cannot quickly walk to shelter, get into a vehicle, buckle your seatbelt and drive to the closest sturdy shelter. If flying debris occurs while you are driving, pull over and park. Now you have two options as a last resort: Stay in the vehicle with the seatbelt on and place your head below the windows. If you can safely get noticeably lower than the roadway, exit the vehicle and lie in that area, covering your head with your hands. Do not seek shelter under an overpass. · Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes. You should leave a mobile home and go to the designated storm shelter or the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building. · Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather information. A NOAA Weather Radio access to local TV, and smart phone apps can keep you informed when severe weather threatens.

News: Case Management Services Top “Green” Spring-Cleaning Tips 1: Toss the Chemical Air Fresheners: The chemicals within air fresheners are linked to developmental and sex-hormone abnormalities, as well as cancer. Consider tossing the chemicals and trying natural fresheners like baking soda or essential oils.

2: Go Paperless: End the flow of bulk mail, direct marketing, credit card solicitations, catalogs and even unwanted phone books by opting out -- a quick search online will bring up sites to help.

One such site is sponsored by the Federal Trade Commission at http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/ articles/0262-stopping-unsolicited-mail-phonecalls-and-email.

3: Clean Up Your Dirty Laundry Habits: Each load of laundry done in a top-loading washing machine uses about 40 gallons of water and a typical dryer sucks up about five kilowatts of electricity each hour it runs. Install a clothesline, either in your basement or backyard. Wash on the cold cycle and air-dry on your newly installed clothesline.

7: Reuse: Scrubbing your shower with an old T-shirt means you keep both the shirt and the disposable wipes out of the landfill. Use old newspapers to clean the windows. Replace air conditioning and furnace filters with washable alternatives.

8: Change Your Lighting: Conserve energy and replace incandescent light bulbs in your home with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). If you install motion sensors on infrequently used lights you'll never forget to turn off the lights again.

4: Be Smart about Water: If you're a typical American, you use about 100 gallons of water every day. The thirstiest water consumer in your house is the toilet, followed by the shower or bath.

To tame the toilet, use a toilet dam. Take shorter showers and install a low-flow showerhead.

5: End Energy Leaks: Turn off appliances and/or unplug instead of using the “Stand by” mode.

6: Spruce with Eco-Friendly Paint: Household paint contains thousands of chemicals, 300 known to be toxic. Choose low-VOC paint. LowVOC paints are water-based and because they aren't made with toxins they don't smell -- and chances are they're available in your color palette.

Why Do You Need Vitamin D? Vitamin D is needed for health and to maintain strong bones. It does this by helping the body absorb calcium from food and supplements.

Vitamin D is also important in many other ways.

Muscles need it to move, nerves need it to carry messages between the brain and every body part. Your immune system needs vitamin D to help fight off bacteria and viruses, and together with calcium it helps to protect older adults from osteoporosis.

Very few foods naturally have vitamin D. Fortified foods provide most of the vitamin D in our diet.

Best sources of D are fatty fish like salmon and tuna. Vitamin D is added to many cereals, orange juice, yogurt, margarine and soy beverages.

Almost all of the milk supply is fortified with 400 IU per quart. An older adult should try to get 800 IU daily.

Recipe of the Month Citrus Herbed Baked Salmon 2 lemons, sliced into ¼-inch rounds ½ cup red onion, sliced 8 ounces salmon 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped ¼ teaspoon natural sea salt Preheat oven to 350 degrees Layer in a foil pouch the following order: lemon rounds, red onion, salmon. Season with herbs and the salt. Close pouch and bake in oven for 25 minutes or until fish flakes with a fork.

Do not poke holes in foil pouch.

Remove salmon from foil pouch, place on plate and drizzle with juices leftover in pouch.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. The minimum suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal. Meal Site: $6.15 Delivered Meal: $6.40.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00pm the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.

Sons of NorwayMandt Lodge Luncheon and Demonstrations Join us on a visit to Sons of Norway- Mandt Lodge on Tuesday, April 9, at Noon for a Norwegian luncheon and cultural demonstrations. Cost $15.00 and reservations required at 873-8585 by April 2nd. Space is limited so sign up early. The lodge is offering an Icelandic baked cod meal with potatoes, vegetables, cucumber salad, riskrem (rice pudding), bread/ lefse, beverages and Norwegian baked goods.

Several of the lodge members will be providing cultural demonstrations which may include rosemaling, Hardanger and others! The group will also share the history of the lodge, their building, and about Sons of Norway, a fraternal organization.

Caregiver Guilt Guilt is a feeling that most caregivers have experienced. As caregivers, life often becomes complicated, and we do or say things we later realize we should not have done.

Sometimes we feel guilty about what we have failed to do or say. Guilt can fester.

But guilt does not have to be forever. At the next caregiver meeting we will explore our experiences with guilt. Is what we feel indeed guilt? If so, what were the circumstances surrounding the action/inaction that has resulted in our feeling guilty? If we are indeed guilty, what can we do to put an end to this troubling feeling? Caregiver Group meets the second Thursday of the month 1:00 to 2:30 PM in the Stoughton Room.
