Case Management Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

News: Case Management Services Social Security’s Chained CPI Gone … for Now

Every January Social Security beneficiaries receive an annual cost of living adjustment (COLA), usually resulting in a slight increase in benefits. According to the Social Security Administration, the purpose of the annual COLA is “…to ensure that the purchasing power of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits is not eroded by inflation.”

The COLA increase in 2014 was 1.5%; beneficiaries receiving $1,000 in Social Security benefits in 2013 saw that amount rise to $1,015 in 2014.

Currently the COLA is linked with the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers formula — also known as the CPI. President Obama’s 2013 budget proposal included a controversial plan to change the current formula for Social Security beneficiaries to a formula called chained CPI that would have presumed different consumer strategies than the current formula. For example, under the current CPI formula the assumption is that when prices rise consumers spend more money on higher-priced items, whereas under chained CPI the assumption is that consumers choose less expensive alternatives rather than spending more money on the items they purchased previously. As such, under chained CPI generally the COLA increase is less than under the current CPI formula. In 2013 had the COLA been calculated with the chained CPI formula, it is estimated benefits would have increased .3% less than the current CPI calculation resulting in benefits being lowered by approximately $3 for every $1,000. While this amount does not seem like much for one year, when calculated over the course of a beneficiary’s receiving lifetime, the difference in benefit could be quite significant.

This highly-controversial proposal had proponents excited about the possibility of saving Social Security money over the long haul.

Critics were worried not only for the beneficiaries that would immediately see less Social Security benefits in their bank accounts, but also because this proposal would lead Congress down a slippery slope of further benefit cuts in budgets to come.

For now, the proposal has been tabled and Social Security COLA increases will continue to be calculated through the existing CPI formula.

However, there is no guarantee the chained CPI proposal will not be suggested in future budget proposals particularly in light of the highlypoliticized nature of the future of Social Security benefits. News: Case Management Services Join Peer Support of Dane County in the Fight Against Loneliness Feelings of loneliness can have a devastating impact on older people. “Loneliness can be twice as unhealthy as obesity,” one study from the UK states. It showed that people who reported being lonely had a 14% greater risk of dying. That percentage means that “loneliness had around twice the impact on an early death as obesity.”

Why? Several studies have linked loneliness to creating a range of health problems:  Increased blood pressure, poor circulation, decreased immune system  Increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease  Obesity and poorer physical health  Depression, increased drinking, falls, cognitive decline How can you avoid loneliness?

Richard Leider, author of The Power of Purpose, is a pioneer in the field of positive aging. He believes in the power of nurturing. “Isolation is fatal,” Leider said, “Whether you nurture pets, kids, plants or a peer; taking care of something helps avoid isolation.” Volunteering is a way of nurturing that helps keep you involved and gives value to your life.

Scam of the Month: Malware Linked to Fake Funeral Notice E-mails There is a new e-mail scam that uses fake funeral announcements as a way to infect your computer with malicious software also known as malware. According to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, the e-mails contain limited information, noting only that an upcoming service will be held for a “friend” and providing a link for more details.

If you receive a similar e-mail, delete it immediately.

Under no circumstances should an e-mail recipient click the link in the e-mail. The link will direct the browser to a foreign website where a .zip file will automatically be downloaded. If this .zip file is opened, malware will be installed on the victim’s computer.

An e-mail received by a Wisconsin resident fraudulently claimed to be from Eubank Funeral Home & Cremation Services, a legitimate company in Texas. The company has placed a warning message on the home page of its website to warn the public about this scam and the misuse of its name. Similar e-mails in this scam may use the names of other businesses.

Olive Oil Is Not The Only Healthy Choice!

Yes, olive oil's the reigning champ of healthy, versatile fats, but these alternatives are worth a pour. All have the same amount of calories, roughly 120 per tablespoon, along with health (and taste!) perks.

Avocado Oil Why it's good: It has heart-healthy omega-3s and mono-unsaturated fats that help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and keep "good" HDL cholesterol high.

Use it for: Salads, veggies, even soups—the mild, buttery taste really enhances flavor.

Coconut Oil Why it's good: Recent research shows its main type of saturated fat, lauric acid, helps boost those healthy HDL cholesterol levels (although not as much as monounsaturated fats do).

Use it for: Baking, from scones to pie crusts.

Used in place of butter in equal quantities, it's a healthier, vegan alternative to animal fat, with a sweet, hint-of-vanilla taste. Since it's solid at room temperature, you can also spread it on toast.

Grapeseed Oil Why it's good: Extracted from grapes, it packs 70 percent polyunsaturated fats, which help reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

Use it for: Sautéing and frying; this oil has a neutral taste and a high smoke point—meaning it can stand up to hot temperatures without burning or losing its nutritional value.

Palm Oil Why it's good: It's super rich in vitamin E, which supports the immune system. Avoid partially hydrogenated palm oil, found in some processed foods; it has unhealthy trans fats (and fewer nutrients).

Use it for: Curries, stews, noodle dishes, and even omelets. The distinctive, earthy flavor is the reason it's a (delicious) staple in Asian, African, and Brazilian cuisine.

Honey Roasted Sweet Potatoes 2 pounds red-skinned sweet potatoes 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 1-inch pieces and put in a 9 by 13 baking dish. In a small bowl whisk together olive oil, honey and lemon juice. Pour mixture over potatoes and toss to coat. Sprinkle with the salt and bake.

Stirring occasionally, for about 1 hour, until potatoes are tender.

Nutrition Program Information: All meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. Menu pg.15.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost . Meal Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75. Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations be made by 1:00PM the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.

Mondays, Apr.7th through May 5th at 3:00 PM The Music Appreciation series organized by John Beutel will begin its 12th season this April. The presentations cover a wide variety of musical topics. The series is aimed at anyone who loves music and would like to learn more about it. The hour long classes are free and anyone in the community is invited to attend.

APRIL HIGHLIGHTS Memory Screening with the Dean Foundation Free memory screenings are being offered: Wednesday, April 16th 1:00PM to 4:00PM. A memory screening consists of a series of questions and exercises designed to identify cognitive problems associated with dementia and other medical conditions. Each screening takes about 15 minutes to complete and will be performed by a trained mental health professional from Dean Foundation, the non-profit affiliate of Dean Health System. Syttende Mai Information The Senior Center staff along with the Commission on Aging have made the decision to be closed during the Syttende Mai weekend. The Chamber of Commerce will not be using the space for their head quarters and we have struggled to have successful fund raisers in the last few years. The competition for volunteers and food booths really has proved very difficult for the Senior Center. So with the support of the Commission on Aging we have decided not to use staff time over that weekend. We will be concentrating on other fund raisers throughout the year. Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions or ideas for upcoming fund raisers, please contact Cindy at the Senior Center.

Cheers to our local schools for helping out with the Place Mat Program for the meals at the Stoughton Senior Center. Thank you to Kegonsa, Martin Luther, Sandhill, St.Ann’s and Fox Prairie schools.

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging

Meeting Highlights for March 4, 2014 Director Comments:

 Staff is considering ways to increase the meal site attendance. In order to ensure any changes are sustainable, we are looking for grant funding to assist with market research.  Our site review for State re-accreditation took place Feb. 26. The recognition plaques for both the State and National accreditation will be presented soon. Thanks to all who participated in this time-consuming process.

March for Meals: A grant is available through this campaign with a funding ranging from $500$10,000. If received, we will use the earnings towards the remodel of our dining room.

COA Self-Evaluation: J. Schwass-Long, R. Baumbach and D. Mix distributed a survey they created. Please return completed survey to the reception desk; these may be anonymous.

Legislative Update:  Obama’s proposed 2015 Budget drops the threat of chained CPI and the MyRetirment Account pension plan which will follow you from job-to-job; the State proposed to study this plan through Bill 611  Supreme Court’s response to the argument for limitations posed with the Voter ID act is expected by June.
