News: Case Management Services Affordable Care Act: What Consumers Can Do To Prepare For Entering The Marketplace People who intend to purchase health insurance through the new health care Marketplace should prepare before making any decisions. Some of the most important things to do are listed below. Become informed. Review the terms used and understand the central concepts. If understanding the Marketplace and the health information terms and concepts is difficult, connect with those who do understand and have the appropriate information to share. Local communities should have agents and brokers, certified application counselors (CAC), and navigators (depending on where you live) who may be able to answer questions. There are currently two websites that can help consumers find local assistance. They are the Marketplace’s site https:// localhelp.healthcare.gov and Enrollment for Health’s site www.e4healthwi.org/get-help-toenroll.

Become familiar with the qualified health plans (QHP) available on the Marketplace. Visit the Marketplace or Enrollment for Health websites listed above to find information about specific plans. Decide what is most important to you in a health plan. For example, it is preferable to have a lower cost or to have the same health care providers? Set a budget. Decide how much can be spent on health insurance. Determine how to enter the Marketplace. Consumers may enter online, by telephone, by mail, or in person. Each person should determine what fits their comfort level and utilize their local resources if they do not wish to use the online resources. For example, if a person would like specific advice about what plan to choose and not just information, he or she may wish to speak with an agent or broker. Only agents or brokers are allowed to provide advice about which plan to select.

Consumers may choose to get information by e-mail about the Marketplace. For example, one can receive updates and e-mails from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) through the www.healthcare.gov website. Gather key materials. Household tax information, income-related documents, social security number(s), birthdate(s), and current health plan information (including about employer-provided plans) are some of the most essential pieces of information to have before enrolling.

FRIENDSHIP FUND FOR ACTIVITIES AT THE CENTER If you are in need of financial assistance to participate in activities at the Senior Center, there is a fund available to help you. For more information please contact Cindy McGlynn/Director 873-8585.

News: Case Management Services door for stability until you can assess the surface around the vehicle. When exiting a large truck, please face the truck, use the hand holds and steps, always maintain three points-of-contact, and take extra time. When you enter a building, please remove snow and water from footwear to prevent creating wet slippery conditions indoors.

It's winter in Wisconsin, so please use extra caution while walking in the snow and freezing rain. Walk slowly, deliberately and like a penguin (take short steps to maintain better balance). Watch where you are walking: being attentive will alert you to potential hazards and will help you avoid slipping. Take the best route: follow the clearest route to the building entrance, even if it is not the most direct route. Please wear substantial footwear like boots, and consider wearing ice cleats. Keep your hands empty so that your arms are free to move for stabilization. Drop your packages off near the door to avoid carrying long distances. If you must carry something (like work shoes, because you are wearing boots), keep your load small and balanced, or use a backpack or a case with a shoulder strap. Be prepared to drop what you are carrying to avoid a fall. When you walk up or down steps or inclines, please use handrails. Many slip and fall injuries take place next to vehicles. When exiting your car, scan the area where you will be parking for ice and snow accumulation. Remember that black ice under a light snow can be very slippery. Before you stand, swivel both of your legs out of the car at the same time for more balance. Hang onto the 4

Rx Savings Cards (They’re Not Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans or Prescription Drug Insurance Plans!) Have you received a letter in the mail from the National Prescription Savings Network? The letter contains two pre-activated pharmacy savings cards and claims that users of the card can receive discounts of 75% on their prescription drugs at their local pharmacy at no cost. It’s true that these cards do provide a discount on some drugs in some circumstances at no charge to the user. However, it’s important to understand what these cards are and are not. It is NOT a drug insurance plan like Medicare Part D and it does not work in conjunction with drug insurance plans. If you already have Medicare Part D or another type of drug insurance, the discount card will not reduce your co-pays. It could be of benefit if the drug you’re taking is not covered by your insurance or if you are in the Part D doughnut hole. If you elect to use the cards, you waive your privacy rights. The letter states, “We may share your information with other companies whose products and services may be of interest to you.” If you don’t have prescription drug insurance, the discount card could save you money. But be aware that the price of using the card is having your private information shared with other companies. Trans Fat is Double Trouble for Your Heart Health: Trans Fat and Cholesterol Doctors worry about trans fat because of its unhealthy effect on your cholesterol levels — increasing your LDL and decreasing your HDL cholesterol. There are two main types of cholesterol: A high LDL cholesterol level is a major risk factor for heart disease. If your LDL is too high, over time, it can cause atherosclerosis, a dangerous accumulation of fatty deposits on the walls of your arteries. These deposits — called plaques — can reduce blood flow through your arteries. If the arteries that supply your heart with blood (coronary arteries) are affected, you may have chest pain and other symptoms of coronary artery disease. If plaques tear or rupture, a blood clot may form — blocking the flow of blood or breaking free and plugging an artery downstream. If blood flow to part of your heart stops, you'll have a heart attack. If blood flow to part of your brain stops, a stroke occurs. How much trans fat you can safely consume is debatable. However, there's no question you should limit trans fat, according to the Food and Drug Administration and the American Heart Association. Don't think a food that is free of trans fat is automatically good for you. Food manufacturers have begun substituting other ingredients for trans fat. However, some of these ingredients, such as tropical oils — coconut, palm kernel and palm oils — contain a lot of saturated fat. Saturated fat raises your LDL cholesterol. A healthy diet includes some fat, but there's a limit. In a healthy diet, 25 to 35 percent of your total daily calories can come from fat — but saturated fat should account for less than 10 percent of your total daily calories. Aim for consuming less than 7 percent of your fat calories from saturated fat if you have high levels of LDL cholesterol. Monounsaturated fat — found in olive, peanut and canola oils — is a healthier option than is saturated fat. Nuts, fish and other foods containing unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are other good choices of foods with monounsaturated fats. article from The Mayo Clinic
