News: Case Management Services Information Social Security Announces 1.7 Percent Benefit Increase for 2015 Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 64 million Americans will increase 1.7 percent in 2015. The 1.7 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits that more than 58 million Social Security beneficiaries receive in January 2015. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 31, 2014. The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some other changes that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $118,500 from $117,000. Of the estimated 168 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2015, about 10 million will pay higher taxes because of the increase in the taxable maximum. Information about Medicare changes for 2015 is available at www.Medicare.gov.

You do need to sign up if you have no insurance, or you are losing your coverage, or you are not eligible to be covered under an affordable, quality employer plan. If you don’t have insurance that qualifies as minimum essential coverage, you may have to pay a fee when you file your taxes. You do not need to sign up if you are covered by BadgerCare Plus, Medicare, Medicaid for Elderly, Blind or Disabled, the VA health program, or good and affordable insurance through your job or your spouse’s job. Important dates for 2015 health care coverage • Sign up between November 15, 2014 and February 15, 2015 • Sign up before December 15, 2014 for coverage to start on January 1, 2015  You can only sign up after February 15, 2015 in special cases Excerpt from: Getting Health Insurance Under the Affordable Care Act

News: Case Management Information Talking with Your Doctor

Some good questions to ask your doctor:

A basic plan for navigating your doctor visit can help you get the most out of your medical appointment:

Medical Tests What will the test tell us? What does it involve? How should I get ready? Will insurance pay it? If not, how much will it cost? Are there any dangers or side effects? How and when will I find out the results?

Make a list of your concerns and prioritize them — Do you have a new symptom you want to ask the doctor about? Are you concerned about how a treatment is affecting your daily life? If you have more than a few items to discuss, put them in order. Start with the ones most important to you. Plan to update the doctor — Let your doctor know what has happened to your health since your last visit. If you have been treated in the emergency room or by a specialist, tell the doctor right away. Mention any changes in your appetite, weight, sleep, energy level, vision, or hearing. Also tell the doctor about recent changes in medications you take or their effects on you. Take information with you — Bring a list of all your prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements, including the dose. Or, put them all in a bag and bring them with you to your appointment. Also take your insurance cards, the names and phone numbers of your other doctors, and any medical records your doctor doesn’t already have. Take notes of main points—or ask the doctor to write them down for you. Get written or recorded materials. Ask if your doctor has any brochures, fact sheets, DVDs, CDs, cassettes, or videotapes about your health conditions or treatments. Consider bringing a family member or friend

—Your companion can remind you what you planned to discuss with the doctor if you forget, take notes during the visit, and help you remember what the doctor said.

4

Your Diagnosis What may have caused this condition? How long will it last? Is it permanent? How is this condition treated or managed? How will it affect me? What might be the longterm effects? How can I learn more? Treatment Options What are my treatment choices? What are the risks and benefits? Ask yourself—which treatment is best for me, given my values and circumstances? Medications When will it start working? What are common side effects? Should I avoid anything while taking it? What if I miss a dose? Prevention What can I do to prevent a health problem from developing or getting worse? How will changing my habits help? Are there any risks to making this change? Are there support groups or community services that might help me? Remember, being organized and prepared helps you get the most out of your health care. Eating Well As You Get Older Eating well is vital for everyone at all ages. Whatever your age, your daily food choices can make an important difference in your health and in how you look and feel. Eating a well-planned, balanced mix of foods every day has many health benefits. For instance, eating well may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer, and anemia. If you already have one or more of these chronic diseases, eating well and being physically active may help you better manage them. Healthy eating may also help you reduce high blood pressure, lower high cholesterol, and manage diabetes. Eating well gives you the nutrients needed to keep your muscles, bones, organs, and other parts of your body healthy throughout your life. These nutrients include vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats, and water. Eating Well Promotes Energy Eating well helps keep up your energy level, too. By consuming enough calories -- a way to measure the energy you get from food --you give your body the fuel it needs throughout the day. The number of calories needed depends on how old you are, whether you're a man or woman, your height and weight, and how active you are. Continued on page 6...

Nutrition Program Information: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. Center & Kitchen News ...Continued from page 5

Food Choices Can Affect Weight Consuming the right number of calories for your level of physical activity helps you control your weight, too. Extra weight is a concern for older adults because it can increase the risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease and can increase joint problems. Eating more calories than your body needs for your activity level will lead to extra pounds. If you become less physically active as you age, you will probably need fewer calories to stay at the same weight. Choosing mostly nutrient-dense foods -- foods which have a lot of nutrients but relatively few calories -- can give you the nutrients you need while keeping down calorie intake. Food Choices Affect Digestion Your food choices also affect your digestion. For instance, not getting enough fiber or fluids may cause constipation. Eating more whole-grain foods with fiber, fruits and vegetables or drinking more water may help with constipation. Make One Change at a Time Eating well isn't just a "diet" or "program" that's here today and gone tomorrow. It is part of a healthy lifestyle that you can adopt now and stay with in the years to come. To eat healthier, you can begin by taking small steps, making one change at a time. For instance, you might  take the salt shaker off your table. Decreasing your salt intake slowly will allow you to adjust.  switch to whole-grain bread, seafood, or more vegetables and fruits when you shop. These changes may be easier than you think. They're possible even if you need help with shopping or cooking, or if you have a limited budget.

6

Checking With Your Doctor If you have a specific medical condition, be sure to check with your doctor or registered dietitian about foods you should include or avoid. You Can Start Today Whatever your age, you can start making positive lifestyle changes today. Eating well can help you stay healthy and independent -- and look and feel good -- in the years to come. Excerpt from the National Institute on Aging website

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for November 4, 2014 Meetings are Open to the Public

 Distributed the survey results of the COA Self -Evaluation Survey. Overall, the responses were positive. Cindy suggest the group review and come back next month with suggestions on what steps we can take to improve.  City Council will be making the final budget decision on City operations later this month. We request to maintain services, with the only change of restoring the eight hours to the Assistant Director position.  COA reviewed another brochure draft. It was proposed that more space be used to explain our ways of giving and volunteer options and several photo recommendations were made.  Viewed flooring and chair covering samples for the main level. We will have more laminate (under all tables) than carpet (in walk and hallways), the walls will be repainted and new chairs will have thicker vinyl seat. To raise more funds for the remaining chair cost, we are selling old gliders ($10/each), folding chairs ($2/each) and card tables ($5/each).  Cindy McGlynn and Carol Heidenway encourage others to participate in the legislative part of our agenda by bringing our attention to issues affecting older adults. Next meeting: 11:00 AM, Dec. 2, 2014 Stoughton Area Senior Center See the City website for full meeting minutes.
