Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their own homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

Tips to Save Energy and Money During The Cold Weather Months Printed by permission from the GWAAR Legal Services Team

After the (in) famous winter of 2013’s sub-zero temperatures, polar vortices, and sky-high energy bills, winter and more freezing temperatures have seemingly returned to Wisconsin a month early.

To help keep energy costs low and save money for what may be a long cold season, the following tips are useful in managing energy usage.

Heating  Lower your thermostat at night and when the house is unoccupied. Lowering the thermostat by 5 degrees at night may reduce heating bills by 5-10%.  Change the furnace filter each month. The dirtier they are, the harder a furnace needs to work. Close off and do not heat unoccupied rooms.  Use electric space heaters sparingly and keep materials away that may catch fire.  Keep any fireplace dampers closed unless a fire is going. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window open, as it allows warm air to escape through the chimney.  Remove any window air conditioners and close and seal the windows.  Cover the windows with plastic during the cold season.  Block any drafts or air paths under or around the edges of doors or windows.

Lighting  Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps, especially in the most commonly used fixtures.



Compact fluorescent lamps use a quarter of the energy of a standard incandescent bulb.

Reduce the wattage of remaining bulbs, if replacing all bulbs is not an option.

Use LED-type lights for holiday decorations, as they cost less to operate than standard holiday lights.

Turn off any lights when not in use or when out of the room for more than five minutes.

Water Usage  Turn down the water heater to 120 degrees or the “normal” setting when home, and to the lowest setting when away. Water heating accounts for approximately 13% of home energy costs.  Install low-flow faucets and shower heads.  Promptly repair leaky faucets, as this will prevent the waste of gallons of water in even a short time.  When purchasing new appliances, purchase efficient, Energy Star-rated items if possible.

News: Case Management Information Study Links Exercise to Reduction in Alzheimer’s Risk Published with permission from the Legal Services Team at the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources’ Elder Law & Advocacy Center.

Drawing on data from more than 150,000 participants in the National Runners’ and Walkers’ Health Studies over a 17-year period, a new U.S. study shows that regular exercise may lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by as much as 40% — an indication that the disease’s progression is not unchangeable.

The study, authored by Dr. Paul Williams, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, concludes that people can be proactive in lowering their risk of developing Alzheimer’s or slowing its progression if it does manifest itself. Studying Alzheimer’s is challenging because its diagnosis cannot be confirmed without examining brain tissue after death. For purposes of the study, Dr. Williams identified 175 subjects for whom the disease was listed as an underlying or contributing cause of death.

Dr. Williams’ study is not able to distinguish between the effects exercise has on preventing or delaying the onset of the disease vs. slowing its progression. It did, however, allow him to determine that those individuals who exercised the most had the lowest probability of dying from Alzheimer’s. While health authorities recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, Dr. Williams found the greatest benefits — a 40% reduction in Alzheimer’s-related mortality — for those who doubled that amount of weekly exercise. Dr. Williams’ study found that even raking leaves or walking contributed to lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s and one in seven Alzheimer’s cases could be prevented if everyone simply met the minimum guidelines of 150 minutes of exercise per week.

The overall benefits of exercise are well known.

Experts contend that Alzheimer’s patients who exercise are less likely to suffer from depression, have better balance to avoid falls, and have improved general cognition. They therefore are able to remain in their homes longer and retain their independence longer than Alzheimer’s patients who lead more sedentary lives. There’s also evidence that suggests exercise stimulates the production of a protein that helps protect the brain from stress-related damage linked to depression which often accompanies Alzheimer’s.

While studying Alzheimer’s can be difficult, it appears inarguable that regular exercise is a simple and extremely effective way of lowering one’s odds of developing the debilitating disease.

Exercise and Osteoporosis At any age, exercise is essential for maintaining healthy bones. It's never too late to start a bone-healthy exercise program, even if you already have osteoporosis or are at high risk of developing osteoporosis.

Non-Impact Activities for Osteoporosis Certain nonimpact activities can improve your coordination, flexibility, and muscle strength and reduce your risk of falls and fractures while increasing your mobility and overall quality of life.

Balance, posture, and functional exercises can be performed daily. Balance exercises such as Tai Chi can strengthen your leg muscles, and help you stay steadier on your feet. Posture exercises can improve your carriage, reduce the "sloping" shoulders associated with osteoporosis, and decrease your risk of fractures, especially in the spine. Functional exercises can improve your ability to perform everyday activities such as getting in and out of bed and chairs, and climbing stairs.

Nonimpact programs such as yoga and Pilates can improve strength, balance, and flexibility in people with osteoporosis. But some of the movements associated with these programs, including forward-bending exercises, can increase the risk of fracture. If you're interested in such programs, ask your physical therapist to tell you which movements are most likely to be beneficial or harmful.

Although exercise can benefit almost everyone with osteoporosis, it's important to remember that it's only one component of an overall treatment program. Other essential lifestyle recommendations include a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, maintaining a normal body weight, and avoiding tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. You also may require osteoporosis medications to either build or maintain bone density. By working with your doctor, you can develop an osteoporosis treatment program that's right for you.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost. Meal Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations must be made by 1:00 PM on the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the County/ Senior Center.

An orientation session will be held on Tuesday, February 11, from 8 AM to noon and Monday, February 16, from 5 PM to 9 PM at Agrace’s Madison campus, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway. Prior to attending orientation, prospective volunteers will complete an application and an interview process with Agrace’s Volunteer Services staff to identify the volunteer’s skills and interests.

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for January 6, 2015 Meetings are Open to the Public

 Flooring is nearing completion. Additional work might delay when chairs can be ordered due to extra cost.  Staff gave information on ADRC in Madison.

Discussion of their services and how our staff interacts followed.  Discussion of Action Plans from the accreditation process, these will become the work plans for committees.  Ad hoc committee of the Commission on Aging will meet to update action plans and assign to the appropriate committee.  Question regarding Senior Center use during Syttende Mai was brought up.

Commission referred item to the Program committee to determine plans for building use during that weekend. Commission also wanted to know if City has updated their Building Use Policy yet.  Work continues on new Senior Center brochure.
