News: Case Management Services IS MONEY TIGHT? MAKE EVERY PENNY COUNT.
SOCIAL ISOLATION AMOUNG CAREGIVERS
Would you walk past a $20 bill lying on the ground? Being eligible for FoodShare Wisconsin but not taking advantage of it is a lot like walking past $20 or more month after month. Many seniors are struggling to make ends meet on less and less. FoodShare could give you monthly deposits to help with buying food, thus freeing up your money for paying bills, buying medications and other necessities. Family Size Max. Monthly Gross Income 1 $1,862 2 $2,522 If your household’s income falls within the guidelines on the chart, call the FoodShare Helpline at 1-877-366-3635 to learn if you might be eligible! It’s easier than ever to apply and you can get free, confidential assistance.
Social isolation is common among long time caregivers. Old time friendships often do not hold up when a person comes to devote all his/ her time to care giving. Trivial pursuits and worldly concerns do not seem important to the caregiver anymore. The care giving journey is foreign and often scary. And, many friends are not able to listen attentively to a caregiver’s concerns. The result is that caregivers don’t put in the effort to maintain contact with friends and even with family and journey on in seclusion. During the next Caregiver Group on February 14th at 1:00 PM we will explore: « what social isolation looks and feels like « what leads to social isolation « if social isolation is inevitable « what we can do about social isolation the importance of social support and socialization
Did you know… « 2/3 of seniors who are eligible for FoodShare are NOT receiving it! « You can own a home and car and still get help with buying food. « Most people who only receive Social Security or Social Security and a small pension are eligible! « The USDA estimates that for every $5 spent in FoodShare benefits, about $9 circulates through local businesses and to our farmers. « Getting benefits does NOT take away from others. EVERYONE that is eligible will get benefits. Call Second Harvest Foodbank’s FoodShare Helpline at 1-877-366-3635 today.
What is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program? The VITA program is a cooperative effort by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and many individual states, including Wisconsin. KITCHEN CORNER CHERRIES In season: June and July, but available year-round. Benefits: "Cherries are high in fiber because of their skin," says Felicia Busch, RD, a nutritionist in St. Paul, Minn., and author of The New Nutrition from Antioxidants to Zucchini. "They are also rich in vitamin C as well as potassium, which can help maintain a lower blood pressure." Get more by: Available year-round, "dried cherries are a great addition to trail mixes and cereals -- hot or cold," Busch says. Many red fruits and veggies are loaded with powerful, healthy antioxidants -- such as lycopene and anthocyanins -- that may do everything from fight heart disease and prostate cancer to decrease the risk for stroke and macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in people aged 60 and older). Antioxidants soak up damaging free radicals. Denise Mann WebMD Feature Reviewed byKathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD

Thursday, Feb. 14 1:00 PM As a caregiver, have you ever wondered what your life journey will be like? Your husband is holding his own, but then one day something happens to him that throws your life into a whole new situation. Perhaps it is your parents, who have been managing great during their retirement years, but then they suddenly find themselves in a healthcare crisis. While nobody can predict the future, having an idea of what to do if/when changes occur is reassuring. We will discuss nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and payment for such intervention. We will talk about the resources that can provide support to you and your loved one(s) at home and how to find your way to what support would be right for you.
