ELVIS IS IN THE BUILDING! Tuesday, January 13, 1:00 PM We’re celebrating Elvis’ Birthday in January with Elvis Impersonator Alan Graveen and his “Strictly Elvis Show”. He packed the house last year, so bring your fellow Elvis fans and grab a seat-you don’t want to miss this one!

Thank you to…  the VFW and American Legion and all the volunteers who provided a Christmas Meal to many of our older adults in the Stoughton community.  St. Ann’s 2nd grade class for the Christmas cookies, treats and for decorating our Christmas tree.  Fosdal’s Bakery for all the daily tasty treats that they provide for the Center.  All who made donations, see pg. 6.

Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their own homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

Equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and other items may be checked out on a short-term basis to those residing in our case management service area (Stoughton, Town of Albion and Town of Dunkirk). Call or stop in for details.

News: Case Management Services Information THE IMPORTANCE OF SENIOR DENTAL CARE, CONSIDER THESE FACTS:

LOW COST DENTAL CARE OPTION IN DANE COUNTY:

Over 30% of older adults have untreated cavities.

Almost 25% of adults between the ages of 65 and 74 have periodontal disease, which is associated with chronic health issues such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory disease. Nearly 30% of older adults lose their teeth.

AND DID YOU KNOW?  Losing your teeth is NOT an eventuality of aging.  Your mouth changes as you age.  Poor oral health can lead to life-threatening diseases.  The nerves in your teeth can become smaller, making your teeth less sensitive to cavities or other problems.

DRY MOUTH A side effect of taking medications-dry mouth-is another problem. Saliva keeps the mouth wet, protects teeth from decay and “prevents infection by controlling bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the mouth.”

A dry mouth increases the risk for cavities and gum disease. About 30% of adults 65 and older experience mouth dryness. And there are over 400 medications with dry mouth as a side effect.

SOLUTIONS TO DRY MOUTH As one of the main culprits of a dry mouth is medication, ask your doctor if there are adjustments to help with the dryness.  Avoid drinks that cause dry mouth such as caffeine, alcohol, acidic juices, and soda.  Don’t smoke.  Drink water throughout the day.  Chewing sugar-free gum or candy will stimulate saliva.  Avoid mouthwashes unless they are specifically designed for dry mouth

News: Case Management Information NEW YEAR’S CLEANING

Documents: When to Shred, When to Keep, What You Need to Know No one likes the piles of papers that we all accumulate over the course of a lifetime, but it’s hard to know how long you should hang onto certain documents and when it’s safe to destroy them. Following is a good rule of thumb for managing your personal documents.

Tax Information and Returns: Generally there is a three-year statute of limitations for the IRS auditing a tax return. This means the IRS has a period of three years from the time you file your tax return to complete an audit. However, there is no limit for fraudulent returns and the IRS has six years to challenge your return if it thinks you failed to report income that amounts to more than a quarter of your total income. Therefore, you should keep your documentation for a at least six years.

Credit Card Receipts: If the credit card receipts serve as evidence for tax-related purposes, refer to the tax information and returns paragraph above. If not, it is recommended that you keep your credit card receipts until you have received your credit card statement and are able to compare the two.

Insurance: Policy and claim information should be kept for as long as the policy is in place.

Bills: In most instances, bills can be shredded once the canceled check from a paid bill has been returned. However, bills will need to be kept longer if claiming household expenses as a tax deduction. Also, one may want to keep bills for larger items for proof of value in the event of loss or damage.

Retirement/Savings Plan Statements: Statements from plans should be kept until you receive your annual summary. Once you verify the numbers, you can shred the quarterly statements. The annual summaries should be 4

kept until you retire or the account is closed.

Pay Stubs: You should keep your pay stubs until you receive your W-2 form. Once you receive this form, ensure that the information matches. If it does, you can shred your pay stubs. Note that you may need to have at least three months of pay stubs if applying for a loan.

Permanent Files: You should keep wills, powers of attorney, birth certificates, marriage documents, military records, and social security cards forever.

WISCONSIN FAMILY CAREGIVER CALL-IN OPPORTUNITY The Caregiver Call-In provides an opportunity for family caregivers throughout the State of Wisconsin to share and learn from others who are also going through the caregiver journey, all in the comfort and privacy of their home.

Caregivers are encouraged to call in every second Tuesday of the month, between 1:00-2:30 PM. The Call-In format will alternate monthly between a chat group and a speaker sharing information based on a topic chosen by the group. There is no cost to participate. The tollfree call is provided by AARP Wisconsin. Group size is limited, pre-registration is required.

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?



4 ounces white chocolate, chopped

Studies suggest vitamin D may go beyond its well-established role in bone health and reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and more.



½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract



1 ¾ cups milk



¼ cup heavy cream

What makes vitamin D unique is that it is a vitamin and also a hormone your body can make from the sun. Despite the ability to get vitamin D from food and the sun, an estimated 40%-75% of people are deficient.



Many factors affect the skin's ability to produce vitamin D, including season, time of day, age, latitude, air pollution, cloud cover, sunscreen, body parts exposed, and color. Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen and getting vitamin D from food and supplements rather than risk the harmful rays of the sun.

Vitamin D is naturally present in few foods.

Since 1930, virtually all cow's milk in the U.S. has been voluntarily fortified with 100 IU of vitamin D per cup. Food manufacturers are fortifying other foods, such as yogurt, cereal, and orange juice, to help consumers fill the nutrient gap in their diets.

Together with calcium, vitamin D can help prevent osteoporosis in older adults. Without enough vitamin D, bones can become brittle and prone to fracture.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with low bone mass and osteoporosis, which is estimated to affect 10 million adults over the age of 50 in the U.S.," says rheumatologist Eduardo Baetti, MD. The recommendations for adults up to age 69 rose to 600 IU/day, and to 800 IU/day for adults starting at age 70.

Combine the chocolate and vanilla in medium bowl. Combine milk, cream, and star anise in a saucepan and heat over med-high until boiling, stirring occasionally. Pour the milk mixture over the chocolate and whisk to melt.

Strain into mugs to smooth and remove the star anise. Enjoy!

Nutrition Program Information: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation. Suggested donation is $4.00.

Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost. Meal Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations must be made by 1:00 PM on the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the County/ Senior Center.

Parkinson Exercise

Instructor: Emily Devine, Stoughton Hospital DPT Designed for individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and led by a trained physical therapist, this class is based on current research targeting specific Parkinson’s Disease movement deficits and focuses on improving function, mobility, mood, quality of life, and fall reduction in a fun atmosphere.

This 8-week class will be every Friday from Jan. 30 to March 20,1:00-1:45 PM at the Stoughton Area Senior Center. All new participants must receive Physician’s Authorization prior to starting the class. There is no cost, but donations are accepted.

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for December 2, 2014 Meetings are Open to the Public

 As of January 1, Hollee is back to working a 40 hours/week schedule  The staff is beginning to meet with the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance for training on setting up a Memory Café and to learn about how Stoughton may be recognized as a dementia-friendly community.  All City Staff will be getting a refresher on emergency management training.  Seniors in Need is receiving more and more funding requests for dental care. No dentist in Stoughton takes MA and those in Madison that do are not taking new patients. Cindy has made it a goal to revisit the possibility of offering preventative dental care in town.  COA Self-Survey Discussion: -to increase member knowledge so COA members may be better advocates, staff will begin giving short in-services on topics identified by COA. -members will provide more support to staff through committees.
