News: Case Management Services Seniors and Alcohol

Excerpts from www.fsmad.org, Family Service Madison, PATH: Special Edition Seniors by Doug Smith

You may not think twice about having a drink now and then as you get older. But alcohol can be a serious problem for older adults, especially if you take certain medications, have health problems or are unable to control your drinking. Aging lowers the body’s tolerance for alcohol, so older adults can develop problems even though their drinking habits haven’t changed. Drinking too much alcohol can also make many health conditions worse; these include diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, liver problems, memory problems and mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Many prescription and over-the-counter and herbal remedies can be dangerous or even deadly when mixed with alcohol. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can safely drink alcohol. Read the labels on all of your medicines. Some labels say, “Do not use with alcohol.” How much alcohol is too much for a person over 65? Everyone is different. If you are healthy, not taking medicines and 65 years or older, you should not have more than 4 drinks in a week. Don’t have more than 2 drinks on any given day. Do you have a health problem? If you are taking medicines, you need not drink at all. Talk to your doctor. What counts as one drink? One drink is equal to one of the following: One 12-oz. can or bottle of regular beer, ale or wine cooler; one 5-oz. glass of red or white wine; one 1.5-oz. shot glass of hard liquor (spirits, including whiskey, gin, vodka, rum, etc.).

the death of friends and loved ones, develop a drinking problem when they get older. Feeling tense or depressed can also sometimes be a trigger for drinking. If someone has been drinking all of their life, is it too late to quit? No. Many older adults decide to quit drinking later in life. Treatment can work! Changing an old habit is not easy, but it can be done. Warning signs of a problem: Changes in sleeping patterns, changes in appetite, complaints of nausea or vomiting, decreased physical strength, frequent and unexplained falls. These symptoms in and of themselves do not directly indicate a substance abuse problem, but the possibility of a substance abuse problem should be considered right away. Intervening: If you suspect that your loved one has a problem, first talk to them; they may be ready to address the concern and get help. More often the response is denial. Don’t give up. Keep talking about concerns. Talk about how alcohol or drug use may be interacting with existing medications. Encourage them to talk with their doctor. Loved ones can join an Al- Anon group. There is no reason for a 70, 80, 90 yearold or more to suffer with an addiction problem. Blueberries: Nutritious Things Come in Small Packages

Recipe of the Month: Blueberry Nectarine Granola Crisp

By Chloe Thompson WebMD the Magazine - Feature Reviewed by Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD

Makes 8 servings

This plump summer berry is packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, and a tangy flavor that comes to life in our recipe for blueberry crisp. Long before Fats Domino was crooning about "Blueberry Hill," Native Americans used the potent fruit to treat coughs. These tiny little gems do indeed pack a potent punch. They rank the highest of any fruit for antioxidants (those freeradical-fighting powerhouses), and one cup delivers 14% of the recommended daily dose of fiber and nearly a quarter of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.

Fruit Filling 5 cups blueberries 2 large nectarines, peeled, chopped 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (can substitute whole wheat or cake flour) zest of 1 lemon Granola Topping 1 1/2 cups regular oats 2 tbsp chopped pecans 2 tbsp chopped almonds 2 tbsp chopped walnuts 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 1/2 tsp cinnamon pinch of salt

Blueberries are also low in calories -- fewer than 100 for a full cup. They owe their distinct hue to their high anthocyanin content, which gives certain fruits and veggies their deep blues and reds. North America is still the leading producer of this beloved blue fruit, accounting for up to 90% of the world's supply. The berry is celebrated throughout July -- the peak of its harvest -during National Blueberry Month. And the fruit received an unofficial presidential seal of approval after Ronald Reagan insisted on having blue jelly beans at his inauguration, leading the Jelly Belly company to introduce its blueberry flavor.

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. Combine the blueberries, nectarines, brown sugar, flour, and lemon zest in a medium bowl; toss to coat. 3. Spoon fruit mixture into an 11 x 7-inch baking dish. 4. For the topping, combine all ingredients and toss to evenly coat oat mixture and nuts with syrup. 5. Sprinkle granola over the blueberry nectarine mixture. 6. Bake for 30 minutes or until bubbly. Serve with low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt, ice cream, or whipped topping.

NUTRITION PROGRAM INFORMATION All meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options. Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. See menu page 15. Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday. Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. The minimum suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal. Meal Site: $6.15 Delivered Meal: $6.40. Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00pm the previous working day.
