News: Case Management Services Information Retirement Uncertainty Affects Multiple Generations The need to plan for retirement does not affect only Baby Boomers (individuals born between 1946 and 1964). According to an article published in USA Today, uncertainty and anxiety about retirement is endemic amongst everyone from those nearing retirement age all the way to Millennials (born after 1978). The rampant uncertainty underscores the need for a disciplined and well-considered retirement plan. Baby Boomers — the generation who will face retirement the soonest — are also the least confident about their future standard-of-living. Only 14% of Baby Boomers are very confident about their retirements and 41% believe their standard-of-living will decrease upon retirement. Troublingly, 65% of Baby Boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire at all. Even with the improvements in health care and the slowly-increasing retirement age, a tremendous number of Baby Boomers are not prepared for retirement. This has only been compounded by the Great Recession, which 40% of Boomers believe is still continuing. Generation X (born between 1965 and 1978) was the first generation to have access to 401(k) plans for the majority of their professional lives. As a result, many Gen-Xers began saving at a relatively young age. However, as a result, Generation X has also become the most heavily reliant on loans and early withdrawals from retirement accounts. Since 2007, the median amount of retirement savings for Generation X individuals has risen from $32,000 to $70,000. However, many Gen-Xers believe they will need upwards of $1,000,000 to retire with a comfortable lifestyle. With many Generation Xers turning 50 next year, time is of the essence to create and maintain a disciplined retirement plan.

Even Millennials — who have decades left in their working lives — have serious thinking to do to plan for retirement. While Millennials are the most confident they will have comfortable retirements (60% expect to retire before age 65), future economic uncertainty requires them to plan far in advance. Technology appears to be helpful in this, as Millennials are the most technologically-inclined generation and more commonly manage financial accounts and assets digitally. Many Millennials utilize technology in the form of financial planners and calculators as well. As a result, Millennials have begun saving for retirement at the unprecedented average age of 22 years old. While progress appears being made in educating respective generations about the risks and uncertainty of retirement, it is critical to remember that everyone needs a well-thought out retirement plan. With advances in medicine, increased life expectancies, and future economic turmoil, all generations must take proactive measures to ensure the standard-of-living to which they are accustomed can be maintained and so they are not required to continue working well into their retirement years. News: Case Management Information What’s that Word Again?

Senior Advocacy Training

When you know what to say but just can’t say it. Scientists call this problem the “tip of the tongue” experience, which occurs when a word exists in a person’s lexicon but temporarily remains inaccessible to the brain. It’s a normal part of aging – tip of the tongue problems typically begin around age 40 – and is reported as one of the most frequent and troubling problems of older adults. As brains mature into middle age and beyond, they think more deliberately, and for a longer time, before making decisions. They may know the answer to a question, but fail to come up with it quickly.

Tuesdays, July 8, 15, 22 & December 2 8:30 AM—12:30 PM Aging & Disability Resource Center 2865 N Sherman Ave., Madison, WI 53704

Try this Brain Booster Reinforce your verbal recall with a name game. Here’s a fun, short exercise that will build on your ability to think of words quickly (always a challenge as we grow older) and test your recall.

Animals, Animals Get a piece of paper and pen or pencil. Set a timer for two minutes (or just keep track on your watch or phone). Ready? Go ahead and write down as many animals as you can in those two minutes. They can be from the land or the sea, the jungle or the desert – just see how many you can come up with in the time frame.

Change Categories You can keep this exercise going by simply changing categories each time. Try using foods, plants, colors, countries – anything you can categorize will work well. See if your lists become longer as you become more practiced at this exercise. Excerpt from National Geographic Your Best Brain Ever A complete Guide & Workout by Michael S. Sweeney 4

Lisa’s

Kitchen Corner

Beans and Picnics Go Hand-in-Hand July is national baked bean month. Baked beans have been a family favorite for years. Made with wholesome beans and a thick sauce, they are a hearty and nutritious side dish. Beans are an excellent source of fiber, and fiber keeps your intestines working properly. With all that fiber, studies show eating beans up to four times a week lowers the risk of heart disease and cholesterol. Beans are also packed with protein, an important nutrient that promotes healthy muscle tissue that increases energy. Baked beans contain folic acid, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium and vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 helps with metabolism and potassium regulates fluids in the body. Manganese is important for your bones and thyroid and magnesium is necessary for bone formation and cell function. If you’re on a high fiber or protein diet, beans are the healthiest way to get these nutrients. They’re better for you and provide more vitamins and minerals than red meats.

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for June 3, 2014 Budgeting for Outcomes (BFO)  The City’s budgeting process, BFO, is beginning.  This year there is more of an effort to have more citizen members to sit on the Results Teams. Contact Cindy if you are interested. Center News:  Stoughton Senior Service Guide is available here, throughout the community and on our website.  Working on a draft for a general center brochure.  Still getting quotes for new main level flooring and furniture. Currently some departments are never used without staff on site, and, some have building fees, while some don’t. There was a long discussion on how to best handle having our Center open safely and most cost-effectively on busy days like Syttende Mai weekend. Legislative Update:  Congressman Tom Petri (6th District) will not be seeking reelection this year, also Attorney General JB Van Hollen, State Treasurer Kurt Schuller, 7 State Senators and 22 from the State Assembly will not be running either.  About 140,000 people in WI have enrolled in health care plans through the Affordable Care Act; 91% of those who signed were eligible for subsidies to help offset the cost of the plans.
