Case Management Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

axãáM Case Management Services Summer Safety Excerpts from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Summer Safety for Older Adults

For many people, summer is a time for warm, sunny days, outdoor activities like swimming, vacations and picnics with family and friends.

However, summer can also bring extreme heat, increased risk of dehydration, food borne illness and other health risks. Recognizing these risks and taking preventative steps will allow you to enjoy your summer without paying the price: Heat-Related Illness Every year thousands of people suffer from heat-related conditions (hyperthermia) like heat stress, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every year around 300 people in the U.S. die from excessive heat exposure. People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are not able to compensate for the heat and properly cool itself. Older adults are more susceptible as their bodies return to normal temperatures more slowly and their bodies’ cooling mechanism is not as efficient. Being overweight, having poor circulation, chronic medical conditions and high blood pressure or taking certain medications can also increase your risk. Very high body temperatures may damage the brain and vital organs.

!

During times of extreme heat temperatures stay indoors.

!

Schedule outdoor activities carefully, limit sun exposure and rest in shaded areas.

Remember the sun is hottest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

!

When outdoors wear appropriate clothing: lightweight, loose fitting and light colored.

Don’t forget sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

!

Avoid dehydration and drink plenty of fluids.

Dehydration is common among older adults and can be life threatening. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, consuming fruits and vegetables, and avoiding caffeinated and/or alcoholic beverages that can act as a diuretic. Don’t wait to drink until you are thirsty as that can be a sign of dehydration!

!

Always wear sunscreen. A sun burn damages your skin, causes a loss of body fluids and affects your body’s ability to cool itself.

Sunscreen can also protect against skin cancer, which is strongly associated with ultraviolet radiation that comes from the sun. Look for sunscreen that offers “broad spectrum” protection and is SPF 30 or higher.

Summer Activities

Protect yourself with these prevention tips: !

Air-conditioning is the primary protective factor against heat-related illness and death. If you don’t have it, or to save money on your electric bill during the heat of the day, visit air-conditioned shopping malls and public libraries to help stay cool.

In summer, activities can range from swimming to gardening and can be both indoors and out. Research has shown that older adults who remain active during their golden years have less depression, loneliness and more control over their lives. Here are just a few ideas for increasing for activity level during these warmer months:

Water activities are abundant in the summer and may include swimming in community pools, pool parties with friends, or water aerobics. Remember to always be safe and follow water and sun safety precautions.

!

Enjoy walks, biking, golfing and gardening to help improve cardiac health or try an outdoor morning tai-chi class for better balance. These and other exercise activities can offer emotional benefits as well improve your overall health. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Look for community summer programs like a special museum exhibit, outdoor symphony concert, farmers market or a summer reading club. Some places offer summer ticket discounts (senior discounts, too) for shows, movies or plays.

!

Volunteer during the summer, or year round, at a summer reading program for kids, local animal shelter, or your local senior center. A recent study has found helping others improves your well-being and longevity.

!

With less busy college campuses in the summer, perhaps this may be a good time to go back to school. You can take courses that earn credit towards a degree or explore new areas for fun and enrichment. Summer Food Safety Foods contaminated by harmful bacteria and viruses can cause a foodborne illness (food poisoning) and older adults and children are considered 4

most susceptible. Foodborne illness can occur within 24 hours of eating contaminated food, or even days or weeks later. Common symptoms of foodborne illness include: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever. Food can become contaminated when we transport, store, prepare or serve it. It is important to use food safety techniques during every stage that we have contact with food. !

Always wash your hands before and after handling food. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds in warm, soapy water to effectively remove germs and dirt.

!

Marinate food in the refrigerator and don’t reuse the marinade on cooked food.

!

Use a food thermometer to ensure that food reaches a safe internal temperature: hamburgers = at least 160ºF, steaks = 145ºF, chicken breast = 165°F and fish = 145ºF.

!

Do not place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs and have plenty of clean utensils, plates and cookware on hand.

!

Never let perishables (raw meat, poultry, eggs, etc.) sit at room temperature for more than two hours before storing them in the refrigerator or freezer. When the temperature is above 90°F store within one hour.

!

Always use a clean cooler filled with ice or an ice pack to keep food cold. When traveling, transport the cooler in the air-conditioned part of your car rather than in a hot trunk.

With all of these great ideas and precautions in mind, we wish you a very happy and safe summer!

Kitchen Corner MyPlate Refresher MyPlate replaced the MyPyramid in June 2011.

MyPlate provides a visual tool to teach you how to load your plates so you feel fuller on fewer calories and get plenty of fiber and nutrients. It has 5 main groups. Fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. ! Fruit group can include fresh, canned, packed in water or juice, dried (used sparingly as they are higher in calories) and frozen but avoid the added sugar or 100% pure juice. Aim for 1.5 to 2 cups daily. ! Vegetable group includes dark green, red and orange, beans and peas and starchy vegetables. Aim for 2.5 to 3 cups of veggies daily. Most people need 4 to 5 cups of fruits and vegetables each day. ! The grain group is whole or processed.

Make at least half of your daily intake whole grains. People should eat 3-4 ounces daily. ! Protein should be lean and fill only a quarter of your plate. Meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy, nuts and seeds are included in this group. Get about 5-6 ounces of protein daily from a variety of choices. ! Dairy group should be products that are low in fat, sugar and sodium like skim or 1% milk and non- fat yogurt. Try for 3 sups of low-fat or fat free dairy per day.

Recipe of the Month Berry Cottage Pudding 4 ounces low-fat vanilla yogurt ½ cup cottage cheese 1 tablespoon honey or sugar 1 cup fresh blueberries Combine all ingredients and serve.

For breakfast, lunch or dessert, this is a tasty and nutritious treat.

NUTRITION PROGRAM INFORMATION All meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers.

If you have special dietary needs, please call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. See menu on page 15.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday. In 2011, there were 19,671 meals delivered.

Cost of Meals : Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation.

The minimum suggested donation is $3.00/ meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal. Meal Site: $6.15 Delivered Meal: $6.40.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00pm the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.

The bus will pick us up at 9:30 AM at the Stoughton Senior Center and the show will be at 1:30 PM. Cost is $89.00 for the bus, dinner and show.

Agrace HospiceCare Offerings The sessions listed below are open to the public and are provided without charge. All groups are held at Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison unless otherwise noted. !

Bridges Weekly Support Group is held every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to11:00 a.m. This ongoing group is for adults who are grieving the death of someone.

Introduction to Grief is an informative session for adults that offers suggestions on how to navigate the grieving process and provides information about Agrace HospiceCare grief support groups. This session is available by appointment only. Call Mary Severson at (608) 327-7182 to make an appointment.

Caregiver Support Discussion Group is a free group designed specifically to educate and support those who are currently caring for someone with a progressive or terminal illness. This session will be held on Tuesday, July 17, from1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Agrace.

Received 16 applications for the Volunteer/Program Coord. position; we look forward to the interview & hiring process Syttende Mai Fundraiser: C. McGlynn ! Coney Dog sales ($1500) were better than past pancake sales; though we must evaluate how best to handle staff time ! We welcome Syttende Mai Headquarters here again!

Endowment Fund: C. McGlynn ! The City’s Council Affairs/Council Policy Committee determined that the funds already deposited in the Senior Center’s Special Gift Fund cannot be taken out of City Funds. However, some funds may be set aside in a separate higher interest accruing endowment fund under the City’s control. ! A resolution and policy are being drafted to maintain the integrity of the gifted money. ! The Center will have four donations options: 1) our SC Fund ($30k needed annually), 2) Special Gifts Fund, 3) Stoughton Community Foundation & 4) City-Operated Endowment Fund Legislative Update: C. Heidenway ! AARP’s “You’ve Earned a Say” (YEAS) is a national conversation on the future of Social Security and Medicare with easy access to information and free of spin and jargon.
