News: Case Management Information SENIORS AND BULLYING What do you think of when you hear the word bully? Do you picture a middle school boy intimidating a smaller kid into giving up his lunch money? Or maybe a high school mean girl spreading rumors? Would it probably surprise you to know that bullying also occurs in places you might not expect - like senior housing, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and senior centers? In fact, experts estimate that between 10 -20% of residents living in senior communities are bullied by their peers. Like their younger counterparts, senior bullies employ tactics ranging from verbal intimidation like insults, teasing, and gossip to non-verbal behaviors like shunning and mocking, to physical violence. Seniors also follow the lead of youngsters in that regardless of age, female bullies tend to exhibit passive-aggressive behaviors such as gossiping behind someone’s back while male bullies tend to be much more “in your face” with both verbal and physical bullying behavior. Why do seniors bully? Bullying behavior can be related to low self-esteem with a bully attempting to build themselves up by putting others down. It may be related to loss that can occur in old age creating a need for control that bullying seems to provide. It can also be related to suddenly having to compete for resources in shared living environments like senior communities. Who gets bullied? Generally victims of senior bullying are similar to victims of any age. They tend to be those who have an overall difficulty defending themselves. They may be perceived as weak or shy, have anxiety or social difficulties, or have minority status within their population. 4

Seniors suffering from dementia may also be easy targets since they are less likely to be able to stand up for themselves or seek help. What should you do if you are being bullied? First, ask yourself, “Is this bullying behavior?” Whether or not an action is actually bullying depends on the type of behavior, the situation, history and whether the behavior is being used to gain power or control at the expense of others. Remember, being “cranky” is not being a bully – everyone has bad days, and older adults may be dealing with health issues that are causing them stress or discomfort. Also be aware that those suffering from conditions like Alzheimer’s can misinterpret normal actions as threatening which can lead them to react aggressively to those around them. If you are being bullied here are a few things to remember: · It isn’t your fault. It is the bully that has the problem – not you. · Respond to a bully by standing up for yourself calmly and confront their behavior rationally while asserting your rights. · Don’t try to appease a bully. If you are unable to immediately stand up for yourself at least let the bully know you are not afraid and quietly walk away. · Ask for help. Approach a friend or family member for assistance. If you are living in a senior community go to a staff member. Many senior communities are beginning to adopt “no bullying” policies and training both their residents and staff how to recognize and deal with bullying behavior. No one deserves to be bullied regardless of age. Remember to treat yourself and others with the consideration, respect and dignity that you and they deserve. News: Case Management Information SOCIAL SECURITY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: WHAT IS THE BENEFIT AMOUNT A SPOUSE MAY BE ENTITLED TO? If you’re eligible for both your own retirement benefit and for benefits as a spouse, Social Security will always pay you benefits based on your record first. If your benefit as a spouse is higher than your retirement benefit, you will receive a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse’s benefits. A spouse generally receives 50 percent of the retired worker’s full benefit, unless the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age. If the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age, the amount of the spouse’s benefit is reduced by a percentage based on the number of months before he or she reaches full retirement age. For example, based on a full retirement age of 66, if a spouse begins collecting benefits: · At age 65, the benefit amount would be about 46 percent of the retired worker’s full benefit, · At age 64, it would be about 42 percent; · At age 63, 37.5 percent · At age 62, 33 percent However, if a spouse is taking care of a child who is either under age 16 or disabled and receives Social Security benefits on the same record, a spouse will get full benefits, regardless of age. Learn more by reading Social Security’s Retirement publication at www.socialsecurity.gov/ pubs/10035.himl I WORK IN RETIREMENT. HOW MUCH CAN I EARN AND STILL COLLECT FULL SOCIAL SECURITY RETIREMENT BENEFITS? Social Security uses the formulas below, depending on your age, to determine how much you can earn before we must reduce your benefit: · If you are younger than full retirement age:

$1 in benefits will be deducted for each $2 you earn above the annual limit. For 2016, that limit is $15,720. · In the year you reach your full retirement age: $1 in full benefits will be deducted for each $3 you earn above a different limit, but Social Security counts only earnings before the month you reach full retirement age. For 2016, this limit is $41,880. · Starting with the month you reach full retirement age: you will get your benefits with no limit on your earnings. Find out your full retirement age at www.social security.gov/pubs/ageincrease.ht HOW DO I REPORT A LOST SOCIAL SECURITY CARD? You don’t have to report a lost Social Security card. In fact, reporting a lost or stolen card to Social Security won’t prevent misuse of your Social Security number. You should let us know if someone is using your number to work (call 1800-772-1213; TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you think someone is using your number, there are several other actions you should take: · Contact the Federal Trade Commission online at www.ftc.gov/bcdp/edu/microsites/ idtheft or call 1-877-ID-THEFT (1-877-4384338); · File an online complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov; · Contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unite by calling1-800-908-4490 Monday –Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. ; and · Monitor your credit report. The above Social Security questions and answers were taken from a publication by Bob Trotter, Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Milwaukee, WI.

IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D A number of treatments can help to prevent loss of bone and treat low bone mass. However, the first step in preventing or treating osteoporosis is to consume foods and drinks that provide calcium, a mineral essential for bone strength, and vitamin D, which aids in calcium breakdown and absorption. Vitamin D decreases bone loss and lowers the risk of fracture, especially in older men and women. Along with calcium, vitamin D also helps to prevent and treat osteoporosis. To absorb calcium efficiently, an adequate amount of vitamin D must be present. Vitamin D is normally made in the skin after exposure to sunlight. Recommendations for vitamin D The current recommendation is that men over 70 years and postmenopausal women consume at least 800 international units of vitamin D per day. Lower levels of vitamin D are not as effective while high doses can be toxic, especially if taken for long periods of time. Although the optimal intake has not been clearly established in premenopausal women or in younger men with osteoporosis, 600 international units of vitamin D daily is generally suggested. Vitamin D is available as an individual supplement and is included in most multivitamins and some calcium supplements. Milk is a good dietary source of vitamin D, with approximately 100 international units per cup (240 mL), and salmon has 800 to 1000 units of vitamin D per serving.
