Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

If you live in Dunn, Pleasant Springs or Rutland case management services are provided by the McFarland Senior Outreach, (608) 838-7117.

Equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and other items may be checked out on a short-term basis to those residing in our case management service area (Stoughton, Town of Albion and Town of Dunkirk). Call or stop in for details.

News: Case Management Information TAKE IT SLOW Gandhi once said, “There is more to life than increasing its speed.” Today it seems to be all about speed. Whether we are making a meal, breaking a sweat or even visiting our doctor, life can move so quickly, we risk sacrificing effectiveness and enjoyment for efficiency.

The good news: Science (and common sense) shows us that sometimes it’s better to slow down.

In fact, listed below are circumstances for which backing off can make you healthier and happier.

So think about taking it a bit easier the next time you’re……

1. READY TO RISE Finally, a reason to linger in bed. It turns out that when you pop out of the sack quickly, sometimes your over-50 brain and body can’t keep up, increasing the risk of a fall from light-headedness or a stumble due to painful joints or a cramp.

SLOW-DOWN STRATEGY Stretch in bed. The most effective move is called Thread the Needle, says Joel Harper, author of Mind Your Body: 10 Core Concepts for an Optimally Balanced You. It will loosen your outer hips and hamstrings, two areas that get notoriously righter with age.

Here’s what to do: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the bed. Lift you left leg and cross your ankle over the top of your right thigh above the knee. Nest, reach under your right thigh and pull gently toward you-feel it?

Hold for five deep breaths, Harper says, and stretch each side twice.

2. BRUSHING UP Research shows that inflammation associated with gum trouble is linked to heart issues and dementia, although scientists have not found a direct cause and effect.

Your first preventive step? Be sure to control plaque, the sticky white stuff that furs your teeth along the gum line.

SLOW –DOWN STRATEGY The average American brushes for only 45 seconds instead of the recommended two minutes, and only 15 percent of us make the effort to floss regularly. Try taking your tooth brush into the shower with you; you’ll be more likely brush longer.

3. MOVING MUSCLES Strength training is crucial to healthy aging. It keeps muscles, bones and joints strong, and also improves balance and helps prevent osteoporosis.

SLOW-DOWN STRATEGY Take twice as long lowering weight as you do raising it. For example, if you are performing a squat, take four seconds to lower your body down and two seconds to push it up. Apply the principle when using weight machines or dumbbells, or doing body-weight exercises.

4. GETTING HEATED The best way to defuse anger? Don’t let it get going in the first place. That’s a challenge, biologically speaking: When you’re angry, your body pumps out stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which further fuel your rage. If you’re an over-60 male, decreasing testosterone can affect mood, working to make you angrier faster.

News: Case Management Information SLOW-DOWN STRATEGY Call a time-out, then hit reset by going for a walk, listening to soft music or taking a few deep breaths before reengaging, says Elinor Robin, a mediation expert based in Boca Raton, Florida.

WRITE WAY SLOW-DOWN STRATEGY We all have our own way of challenging the tyranny of time. But one thing proven to help you slow down is writing down your thoughts and feelings in longhand. On paper. It’s not just writing; it’s taking time to think and process recent life events. The ritual is an effective way for you to analyze situations creatively and to stay centered during difficult times.

5. LOOKING FOR A BUZZ Natural levels of the stress hormone cortisol peak at about 30 minutes after waking, and caffeine boosts cortisol, so waiting a few hours later-till your levels naturally dip-to have your first cup of coffee will give you a lift when your body needs it.

But don’t skip your caffeine. A small study of older adults, ages 61 to77, published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience, found that the equivalent of two cups of brewed coffee improved both cognitive and perceptual motor skills, helping people more easily navigate a crowd or stay focused on a task.

SLOW-DOWN STRATEGY Mix ½ to 2 teaspoons of a powdered fiber supplement into an 8-ounce glass of ice water first thing, instead of having coffee. A psylliumhusk powder, can help lower cholesterol and steady blood sugar-especially important if you are diabetic or prediabetic-while aiding digestion and curbing appetite. Plus, plan your afternoon caffeine for around 2:30PM, when you’ll experience another cortisol dip.

News: COA & Community Information Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for February 2, 2015 Meetings are Open to the Public

Center News: Cindy McGlynn  Introduced and welcomed Tricia Nicoll, our new Program/Volunteer Coordinator. COA members and SASC participants are encouraged to share their ideas with her.  Discussed City’s concerns with the increasing needs for mental health services both city and county-wide.  Discussed the continued need for affordable preventative dental care. Some dentists have expressed interest in assisting if a  location can be determined.

Strategic Plan  COA continued planning for four focus groups to be held in March. Please contact Cindy if you would like to participate.

Committees  Program: group met Tricia Nicoll and discussed programming ideas for better reaching the younger-older population.  No other committees will meet until the completion of the Strategic Plan.

THIS MONTH’S SUPPORT EVENTS Who or What is a Friendly Visitor?

Do you enjoy meeting new people? Would you like to make a new friend? Would you have an hour a week to visit with and get to know someone?

A friendly visitor is a person who would like to befriend an older adult who may be experiencing isolation and/ or loneliness. A friendly visitor is a volunteer who, after brief training, interacts with older adults by offering home visits which brings a little of the outside world to the individual. Often it is just the opportunity to have a friendly ear to listen that enhances a person’s life.

Join a Beginner's T'ai Chi class Thursday, March 3 10:30 AM This class will be held Thursdays at 10:30 AM. It is an introductory class showing the rudiments of T’ai Chi, a Chinese exercise likened to "swimming in the air." The cost is $7.00 per class. Moving slowly and with purpose can promote relaxation and a sense of "flow." T'ai Chi has also been shown to help alleviate high blood pressure, arthritis and reduce stress.

Healthy Aging- Oral Health and Bone Disease Thursday, March 10 1:00 PM Osteoporosis and tooth loss are health concerns that affect many older men and women.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become less dense and more likely to fracture. This disease can affect any bone in the body. Research suggests a link between osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw.

The bone in the jaw supports and anchors the teeth. When the jawbone becomes less dense, tooth loss can occur, a common occurrence in older adults. Tooth loss affects approximately one -third of adults age 65 and older. Please consider learning more about the links between our skeleton and our teeth in this one hour session with Registered Nurse, Sue Richards.

Lunch and Learn – Conversation Partners with UW Monday, March 21 12:00-1:00 PM Are you available to chat with an international student at the UW-Madison via Skype or FaceTime? Currently there are international students from about 130 countries studying at the UW. Many of these students make friends on campus with other students from their own countries, but struggle to make American friends. We are starting a new program in which we would match you with one international student. You would “meet together” each week via Skype or FaceTime, probably once a week for about an hour, or twice a week for about a half hour each time just to chat. You would not be required to tutor the student you are matched with. You would be welcome to use the computers in the computer lab or your own device. We would provide you with some training and support and the contact information for your international student conversation partner. You would be able to arrange the “meeting” schedule for the days and times that work well for both of you. We would hope that your partnership could continue for about one semester. Spring Music Appreciation Series Mon. March 28, 3:00 PM The Music Appreciation Series will continue its 14th year of presentations. The programs are open to "anyone who loves music and would like to learn more about it". Sessions begin Mon., Mar. 28 and continue on Mondays at 3:00 pm until May 9.

The sessions are free. Donations are appreciatively accepted. All the programs are at the Senior Center, except the program on Mon. April 4, which will be at the Opera House. On Monday March 28 we welcome the Wind Quintet made up of Graduate Students at the UWMadison. Mrs. Wilson has stood stoically by the President as she saw his strength sapped from the stresses of the war and his dream of a League of Nations fade. Edith Galt Wilson sits alone now, answering the hundreds of letters of condolence.

Ole is a 3 year old German Shepherd & Belgian Malinois mix.

Ole is a dual purpose patrol dog that is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension.

Ole lives with his handler, Officer Chad O’Neil, and loves to work more than anything else.

Good Eggs: For Nutrition, They're Hard to Beat

What would we do without the egg? It's a dietary mainstay. But for a few decades there, eggs had a rather unwholesome reputation. Thanks to its high cholesterol content, the egg was deemed villainous. Years went by while many of us shunned eggs, ate only the whites, or ventured into the world of egg substitutes. When scientists learned that high blood cholesterol was associated with heart disease, foods high in cholesterol logically became suspect. But after 25 years of study, it has become evident that cholesterol in food is not the culprit -- saturated fat has a much bigger effect on blood cholesterol.

Full-fat dairy products and fatty meats are examples of foods that are loaded with saturated fat and which trigger the body to produce cholesterol. Along with milk, eggs contain the highest biological value (or gold standard) for protein.

One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids. The egg is a powerhouse of disease-fighting nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin. These carotenoids may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older adults. And brain development and memory may be enhanced by the choline content of eggs.

Senior Center Nutrition Program: Meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packed, delivered and served by Senior Center staff and volunteers. If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday. The Home Delivered Meal menu for the month is on the following page.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. The Nutrition Site offers meals from the menu on p. 15, as well as additional meal choices on Tuesdays & Thursdays (see below). See page 2 for transportation options.

Cost of Meals: Individuals 60 or older pay by donation.

Suggested donation is $4.00. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost: Site: $7.50 Delivered Meal: $7.75.

Please be reminded that, if at all possible, cancellations/reservations should be made by 1:00 the previous working day.

Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.
