The Stoughton Senior Center Health Fair/Flu Shot

Friday, October 3rd 8:30AM-11:30AM. The Flu vaccine will be available along with other good health information and services. Please bring your Medicare card (Red, White and Blue card).

Improving the Main Floor of Our Senior Center We are currently planning to remodel the main floor of the Senior Center. The flooring is beginning to show wear and we are wanting to purchase more comfortable chairs for our dining area. We were able to secure two grants to help with some of the costs for the flooring, but we are still in need of your help to complete all of the updates. We are asking for donations to help with the costs of the new chairs for the main level. The rough estimate for the total project is approximately $17,000. We appreciate any help you can give, no donation is too small. Please contact Cindy McGlynn if you have any questions. 873-8585 Ext:202

News: Case Management Services Information Check Your Medicare Annual Notice of Change!

It’s hard to believe but another Medicare annual enrollment period (AEP) is upon us! What’s the annual enrollment period? Each year from October 15 to December 7, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to enroll in, switch, or dis-enroll from Medicare stand-alone prescription drug plans (Medicare Part D) and Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C). During this time, a Medicare beneficiary who has never enrolled in a Part D drug plan or Advantage plan can enroll for the first time and a beneficiary who is already in a Part D drug plan or Advantage plan can disenroll from their current plan or switch from their current plan to a different plan. You might think that if you already have a drug plan or Advantage plan that you don’t need to think about switching plans during the AEP. No so. Even if you were completely happy with your drug plan or Advantage plan in 2014, you should investigate your options during the AEP because your current plan will be changing and so will the other plans available to you. For example, some stand-alone Part D plans may not renew for 2015. Not renewing means the company the plan belongs to has decided not to offer that plan in 2015. People who are enrolled in these plans will have to enroll in a new plan during the AEP to have coverage starting January 1, 2015. Other Part D plans in Wisconsin may have elected to consolidate with another plan offered by the same company. If you are in one of these plans and take no action, you will be automatically enrolled in a different plan offered by the same company effective January 1, 2015. This new plan, though offered by the same company, might be quite different than what you have now. Among other things, it will have a different premium (which may be quite a bit higher than what you have now), a different formulary (which may or may not cover your

drugs), and different out-of-pocket costs for your drugs. If you want to know what plan you will be put into and what the details of that plan are, the place to look is your annual notice of change. What’s an annual notice of change? It is a notice sent to you by your current plan telling you how your plan is changing for 2015 and, if your plan is not going to be around in 2015, which plan you will be auto-enrolled in and how that plan compares to your current plan. Your current plan is required to mail the annual notice of change to you by September 30. Look for it and read it carefully. If you do not receive your annual notice of change, contact your plan and request it. If your annual notice of change informs you that your current plan is not renewing and that you will be auto-enrolled in a different plan, you can enroll yourself in whatever plan you want during the annual enrollment period. You be automatically enrolled in the company’s other plan ONLY if you do nothing. Going into a plan offered by your current plan company doesn’t mean that the new plan is your best or most affordable option. Even if the new plan looks acceptable to you, you should schedule an appointment with your friendly neighborhood benefit specialist or call 1-800-Medicare to do a Medicare plan finder. The plan finder allows you to compare plans based on the individual medications you take and is the only way to determine the most affordable plan for you. Although it may seem counterintuitive, you can’t determine how expensive a plan will be based solely on its premium. True plan costs also depend on the drugs covered and at what amount which depends on the medication you take. Don’t pick a plan based on the company name or the premium amount. Continued on Page 4

News: Case Management Information Unfortunately, the vast majority of people do exactly that. Nationally, less than 10% of all seniors picked the Medicare Part D plan that was best for them. To avoid being one of these people is to use the plan finder to select your plan.

If your current plan is renewing and will be around next year, you should still do a plan finder to investigate your options because your 2014 plan can change dramatically and so can all the other available plans. Your plan can become more expensive and other plans can become cheaper. Your plan can change its formulary so that it no longer covers all your medications. Plans that may not have covered all of your medications last year may now cover them this year. No one looks forward to the AEP, but with a little work (starting with reading your annual notice of change) you can ensure you’re enrolling in the most appropriate and affordable drug plan for your individual needs. Consumer-Friendly Changes for Wisconsin’s Do Not Call Program Contributed by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection Consumers may not notice the difference right away, but big changes are just around the bend for Wisconsin’s Do Not Call program. As of August 1, Wisconsin consumers are no longer required to register their numbers every two years to receive protection under state law from unwanted telemarketing calls and text messages, and new registrations will be active the following day rather than the next quarter. 4

“The changes to the state’s Do Not Call law will benefit consumers,” said Sandy Chalmers, Division Administrator for Trade and Consumer Protection. “Consumers can sign up once and not have to worry about whether their registrations will lapse or whether there will be a three-month delay before they are protected under the program.” If a Wisconsin consumer has previously registered their number to the federal list, they do not need to re-register for protection under the new law. Wisconsin consumers can register their residential landline, cell, or VoIP numbers online at http://nocall.wisconsin.gov or by placing a call from the phone they wish to register to 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236). After you register, your phone number will show up on the registry the next day. Telemarketers covered by the Wisconsin Do Not Call Registry have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you. If you receive a call from a telemarketer after 31 days, file a complaint on the DATCP website (http://datcp.wi.gov) or call DATCP’s consumer information hotline at 1-800-422-7128. For more information on the Wisconsin Do Not Call program, visit http://nocall.wisconsin.gov or call the consumer information hotline.

Kitchen Corner Bone-Building Foods By Christine Mattheis

If you don't eat dairy, you're not doomed to brittle bones. Fill up on these 14 calcium-rich foods that don't contain a drop of milk. Calcium builds healthy bones and teeth and ensures your muscles, cells, and nerves work properly. Adults need about 1,000 milligrams a day—that's a little more than three 8-ounce glasses of milk—but what if you're vegan, lactose intolerant, or just don't like the taste of dairy products? Here's a little-known fact: there are lots of non-dairy foods with calcium. Here are 14 of them and their calcium content: Collard greens: 268 milligrams per 1 cup cooked Broccoli: 86 milligrams in 2 cups raw Broccoli rabe: 100 milligrams in one 2/3-cup serving Kale: 101 milligrams in 1 cup raw, chopped Edamame: 98 milligrams in 1 cup cooked Bok choy: 74 milligrams per 1 cup shredded Figs: 121 milligrams per 1/2 cup dried Oranges: 74 milligrams in one large orange and 27 milligrams in a cup of orange juice Sardines: 351 milligrams in one 3.75-ounce can Canned salmon: 232 milligrams in half a can White beans: 63 milligrams in 1/2 cup cooked Okra:82 milligrams in 1 cup Tofu: 434 milligrams per half cup Almonds: 75 milligrams per ounce (about 23 whole almonds).
