News: Case Management Services A Reminder About Medicare Coverage of Flu Vaccines Medicare Part B covers 100 percent of the cost of a flu shot once every flu season with no Part B deductible required. This is true for both Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans (private health plans). Original Medicare will pay for the flu shot no matter where you get it, as long as the health care provider is enrolled in Medicare. You will pay no copay or deductible if you see a doctor or other health care provider who takes assignment. Providers who take assignment cannot charge you more than the Medicare approved amount. If you receive your Medicare benefits from a private plan, the plan cannot require that you get a referral for the vaccine, but it can require that you use providers in the plan's network. You should call your plan to find out what rules apply. The flu season usually runs from November through April. Therefore, Medicare may cover a flu shot twice in one calendar year. For example, if you get a shot in January 2011 for the 2010/2011 flu season, you could get another shot in October 2011 for the 2011/2012 flu season. What is Influenza (the flu)? Influenza (flu) is a serious disease of the nose, throat, and lungs. It can make you sick for a week or longer with coughing, fever, aching, and more. It can lead to pneumonia and make already existing health problems such as diabetes, asthma, and heart disease worse. Why Should I Get a Flu Shot? Each year in the US about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes. Getting a flu shot is the BEST way to protect yourself from the flu.
Who Should Get a Flu Shot? Everyone who is 6 months or older can benefit from the protection of a flu shot. How Does the Flu Shot Work? The flu shot helps your body fight viruses that cause the flu. It does this by teaching your immune system to recognize flu viruses, so that it is “primed” or ready, to fight the disease if you are exposed to it. How Well Does the Flu Shot Work? Most of the time, the flu shot will prevent the flu. In scientific studies, the effectiveness of the flu shot has ranged from 70% to 90% in healthy people younger than age 65 when there is a good match between circulating viruses and those in the vaccine. The vaccine may be less effective in older people or people with weakend immune systems. However, these people still benefit from getting the vaccine because it helps prevents severe illness, hospitalization and death from the flu. What Are the Side Effects of the Flu Shot? The most common side effects are soreness or redness where the shot was given. These symptoms go away in a few days. Other side effects such as fever or aches are extremely rare. In clinical trials, fever or aches are extremely rare. In clinical trials, there was no difference in side effects between people who got the vaccine and people who got a placebo (“sugar pill”). The risk of severe allergic reaction is less than 1 in 4 million.

News: Case Management Services Can the Flu Shot Give Me the Flu? No. The ingredients in the vaccine cannot cause the flu. The flu viruses in the vaccine are killed. When Should I Get a Flu Shot? October and November are the best months to get vaccinated, but December is not too late in most years. Can This Shot Help Protect Me Against Colds and Other Respiratory Diseases? No. This vaccine protects only against the flu viruses contained in the vaccine. What is the Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine? The nasal spray vaccine is sprayed into a person’s nose, instead of being given a shot. It is approved for use in healthy people 5 through 49 years old who are not pregnant. It is a safe and effective vaccine. For more information, ask your health care provider or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-2324636) Website www.cdc.gov/flu This information was taken from a handout of the CDC.
Medicare Part D Information Enrollment Period: Note New Date: October 15 to December 7 each year and coverage begins Jan. 1 . You can also switch plans each year during this time. Initial: 7 month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65 years old. Coverage: Private provider coverage of prescriptions drugs. Formularies (covered drugs lists) differ by plan. Premium:Between $34.90 and $109.10 (2011) Deductible: Between $0 and $310 ; average is $150 (2011) Additional Costs: Co-pays for prescription drugs differ by plan. Provider Restrictions: In-network pharmacies, except in emergencies. Late Enrollment Penalties: Add to current premium 1% of base beneficiary premium ($32.34 for 2011) for every month you could have had Part D but did not (unless you had other creditable coverage). Eligibility: Must have Medicare Part A and B Call a Stoughton Senior Center Case Manager for more information.
Pneumonia Shots Another preventive measure that you may want to discuss with your doctor would be to help protect you against Pneumonia. The common cold can lead to pneumonia and there is no vaccination against a cold, so a preventative pneumonia vaccination can help keep a miserable cold, to just being a cold.

Lisa’s Kitchen Corner Cranberries
Cranberry Pie Parfait
Cranberries score among the highest of all fruits in antioxidants. Diets including fruits and vegetables with high antioxidant values, like cranberries, may help support memory function and coordination. Cranberries are a cholesterol free, fat free and low sodium food, and help maintain a healthy heart. Cranberries are part of a healthy diet and contain proanthocyandins and antioxidants that may help maintain a healthy immune system. The cranberry is a little, red tart fruit with a big punch. Wisconsin produces more of this power-packed berry than any other state in the U.S. In fact, the cranberry is Wisconsin’s official state fruit. It is also the state’s number one fruit crop, both in acres planted and in the industry’s valuable contribution to the state’s economy. The cranberry, once called “crane berry” by settlers because of its blossom’s resemblance to the sandhill crane, is best known for its place on the Thanksgiving table. But, the fruit has become a year-round favorite, and is making its way into everything from summer salads and jams, to trail mix and cookies. Cranberries were first harvested in Wisconsin around 1860 by Edward Sacket in Berlin, Wis. Wisconsin cranberry growers annually harvest enough cranberries to supply every man, woman and child in the world with 26 cranberries.
2 cups crushed graham crackers 2 cups cranberry sauce 2 cups vanilla, pumpkin, or butterscotch pudding ½ cup whipping cream ¼ cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Cranberries grow on low-trailing vines in sandy or peat marshes, but in Wisconsin, cranberry marshes are flooded with water to aid in harvesting. Because the tart tiny berries contain a pocket of air, when the marsh is flooded the berries float to the surface to be picked up by harvesting equipment.
1) Prepare the cinnamon whipped cream: combine whipping cream, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Whip until thick and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Set aside. 2) Set out 4 tall parfait glasses. Fill each with alternative layers of ¼ cup graham crackers, cranberry sauce, and pudding. Repeat until all ingredients are used. Top each glass with cinnamon whipped cream. Serve immediately or chilled. To the participants who enjoy our meals on wheels and congregate lunches: Please be reminded that. Cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00 the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.
NUTRITION PROGRAMS All meals are provided by Dane County Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers. If you have special dietary needs, please call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options. Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. Menu Pg.15 Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday. Cost of Meals 2011: Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation. The suggested donation is $3.00/meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal.
