News: Case Management Services Information The Scoop on Vaccinations Excerpts from WebMD.com

Medicare Part D plans cover the shingles vaccine on their drug formularies. Plan members can contact their Medicare drug plans for more information about coverage.

Influenza If you're over 6 months old, the CDC says yes, you need to get a flu vaccination at the start of every flu season. Despite the fact that we tend to label any illness that makes us sneeze, shiver, or vomit as "the flu," true influenza isn't a trivial illness. "Hundreds of thousands of people each year are hospitalized with influenza. Between 3,000 and 40,000 people die during any influenza season, depending on the strain that's circulating," says Jeffrey Duchin, MD, chief of the Communicable Disease Epidemiology at Seattle & King County Public Health. For those on Medicare, the Medicare Part B component of Medicare covers the vaccination.

Pneumonia Vaccine Pneumonia is a lung infection that can make you very sick. You may cough, run a fever, and have difficulty breathing. For most people, pneumonia can be treated at home. It often clears up in 2 to 3 weeks. But older adults, babies, and people with other diseases can become very ill and may need to be in the hospital. Older adults (age 65 or older), people who smoke, and people who have some long-term (chronic) conditions also need the pneumococcal vaccine. The pneumococcal vaccine may not prevent pneumonia. But it can prevent some of the serious complications of pneumonia. For those on Medicare, the Part B component of Medicare covers the vaccination.

Shingles Vaccine Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful skin rash, often with blisters that's caused by the varicellazoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. In people who have had chickenpox, the virus is never fully cleared from the body but instead remains dormant in the nerve tissues. When physical or emotional stresses to the body weaken the immune system, the virus reactivates and spreads along the nerve fibers to the particular area of skin supplied by the involved nerve. The shingles vaccine, Zostavax, helps stimulate your immune system and also helps people who go on to develop shingles have shorter periods of nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). If you're over age 50, the shingles vaccine may help you avoid getting shingles. If you've had shingles, the vaccine may help prevent a recurrence.

News: Case Management Information Bill to Grant Social Security Credits to Caregivers Published with permission from the Legal Services Team at the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources’ Elder Law & Advocacy Center.

Most of us will either be caregivers or will need care in our lifetimes. Currently, more than 42 million unpaid caregivers provide care to someone age 18 and older who is ill or has a disability. But caregiving, while providing an invaluable benefit, comes at some cost to the caregiver. In fact, in some cases, caregivers may be receiving less Social Security benefits. This is because, generally, uncompensated caregiving does not pay into Social Security. As a result of paying less into Social Security, a person who provided caregiving may receive a lower amount of Title II (including disability and retirement) benefits from Social Security or may be unable to qualify at all for Title II Social Security benefits including monthly payment and lump-sum death payments. The amount a person pays into Social Security over their lifetime could also impact whether or not they are eligible for premium free Medicare Part A. HR 5024 — the Social Security Caregiver Credit Act of 2014 — would amend Title II of the Social Security Act to provide eligible caregivers with work credits for up to 5 years of caring for dependent relatives. The Social Security Caregiving Credit Act was introduced to the House on July 8, 2014 by Rep. Nita Lowey (DNY). As of the date of this article, the bill has 16 co-sponsors including representatives Gwen Moore and Mark Pocan from Wisconsin.

amount of Social Security benefits the caregiver would be eligible for when they retire would be increased. "Caregivers are often torn by the impossible choice of taking care of a family member or earning less for themselves and their family," said Representative Nita Lowey. "My bill would provide them the peace of mind that, when they retire, they won't be financially punished for providing needed care for loved ones." If you support the passage of this bill, call your member of Congress at (800) 839-5276 and ask them to co-sponsor HR 5024 — the Social Security Caregiver Act of 2014. For more information on HR 5024, visit: https:// beta.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/housebill/5024

Sharps must be in a sharps container or thick plastic detergent bottle. Eye glasses and hearing aids will also be collected Medications in the original container if possible with the name blacked out

Under the proposed bill, for each month a caregiver worked over 80 hours caring for a dependent relative without monetary compensation Social Security would deem certain wages to have been paid. There is a formula Social Security would use to determine the value of the deemed wages. This means the 4

Salad Meals Available Thursdays at the Center Call 875-8585 by 1:00 PM the day before

By Mayo Clinic Staff

Healthy eating doesn't have to be boring or tiresome. Flavorful food combinations, new cooking ideas and an inventive spirit can add pizazz to your meals and snacks. Play with your food. Try mango or peach slices on whole-wheat toast with a little peanut butter and honey. Toss some mandarin orange or peach slices into a salad. Toss on some beans. Add chickpeas (garbanzos) or black beans to your lunch or dinner salad. Try tofu. Stir-fry extra-firm or firm tofu instead of meat in Asian-style dishes. Snack smart. Make a nutritious snack rather than a full meal when time is tight. Bulk up. Add crushed bran (or oats or whole grain) cereal or unprocessed wheat bran to baked products, such as meatloaf. Go green. Choices include arugula, chicory, collard greens, dandelion greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach and watercress. Try mixing varieties to get all the nutrition benefits and all the flavors. Multitask. Healthy examples include beef, barley and vegetable stew; chicken, vegetable and rice casserole; turkey and bean casserole with tomatoes. Add a side of salsa. Whether it's mild, fruity, hot, smooth or chunky, salsa is a great companion for potatoes, vegetables, fish, chicken, meats and even eggs. Spice it up. Use herbs and spices to add color, taste and aroma. Explore the world. Discover and enjoy foods from around the world.

News: COA & Community Commission on Aging Meeting Highlights for Aug. 5, 2014

City is conducting, with several other municipalities, a wage/compensation study for all city employees.  Staff shared a transportation petition that was distributed by a advocacy group to try to encourage priority of access to transportation and an improvement to roads and infrastructure in Wisconsin.  Staff communicated concerns with dealing with mental health issues and the toll that it takes on staff time and resources.  Process in updating the main level with new flooring and replacement of all the chairs is moving forward. Two grants have been secured to help with the cost, but donations will have to be asked for to complete the project. The Commission on aging did move to use some of the special gift money to offset some of the cost of the updates. Next meeting: 11:00 AM, Sept. 2, 2014 Stoughton Area Senior Center

Pictures from the Commission on Aging Survey that was done during the recent Maxwell Street Days in Stoughton. Max and Judy Kapfer and grandchildren are talking with COA members Kay Davis and Don Mix. Thank you to all the participants that helped us with the gathering of information and the feed back that was given.

See the City website for full meeting minutes.

Improving the Main Floor of Our Senior Center We are currently planning to remodel the main floor of the Senior Center. The flooring is beginning to show wear and we are wanting to purchase more comfortable chairs for our dining area. We were able to secure two grants to help with some of the costs for the flooring, but we are still in need of your help to complete all of the updates. We are asking for donations to help with the costs of the new chairs for the main level. The rough estimate for the project is approximately $17,000. We appreciate any help you can give, no donation is too small. Please contact Cindy McGlynn if you have any questions. 873-8585 Ext:202
