Secrets to Health and Happiness

What: Medicare and Medicare D Program When: Thursday, September 15, 6:30 PM Where: McFarland Senior Center 5915 Milwaukee St. McFarland, WI RSVP: Call 838-7117 ASAP to let them know you’ll be there!

In 2004 National Geographic, the National Institutes on Aging, and AARP came together to identify places around the globe where people live longer and report better health. There were five places world-wide where people reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States. These places are Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; Nicola, Costa Rica; and Ikaria, Greece. The people of these areas were studied to determine why they live longer and healthier than people from other areas of the world. The secrets revealed were not so much about genetics or diet but instead related to the lifestyle of these healthy people. The following nine lifestyle characteristics were found in all five locations:  Just move - walk everywhere possible  Purpose – have a reason to wake up in the morning  Down shift – find ways to eliminate stress  80% rule – stop eating before you are full  Plant slant – eat more fruits and vegetables and limit meat  A glass of wine – wine in moderation can be good  Belong to a faith-based community – Any will do  Put loved ones first – Invest in positive relationships with family  Right tribe – Surround yourself with supportive people

Please join the McFarland Senior Center as they host an evening with featured speaker Holin Kennen, Dane County Benefit Specialist. The program will be an introduction to the basics of Medicare and Medicare Part D. Different aspects of Medicare will be highlighted, including hospitalization, durable medical equipment, medication coverage, as well as Medicare Health plans. The presenter will discuss Medicare health plans, how these coordinate with retiree health coverage and other plans such as Senior Care. An update will be provided on any changes that have resulted from recent state and federal legislation. Be sure not to miss this important overview of the challenging and ever-changing Medicare program.

Low Vision Equipment Do you know someone who needs help with their vision? Ask a Senior Center Case Manager about our low vision equipment available for loan. We are available to assist you in setting this up and orientating you to one of these helpful vision units.

Lisa’s Kitchen Corner What is Vitamin B12 and what does it do? Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body's nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B12 also helps prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak. Vitamin B12 is found naturally in a wide variety of animal foods and is added to some fortified foods. Plant foods have no vitamin B12 unless they are fortified. You can get recommended amounts of vitamin B12 by eating a variety of foods including the following: Beef liver and clams, which are the best sources of vitamin B12. Fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and other dairy products, also contain vitamin B12. Some breakfast cereals, nutritional yeasts and other food products that are fortified with vitamin B12. To find out if vitamin B12 has been added to a food product, check the product labels. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes tiredness, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, and megaloblastic anemia. Nerve problems, such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, can also occur. Other symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include problems with balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness of the mouth or tongue. Vitamin B12 deficiency can damage the nervous system even in people who don't have anemia, so it is important to treat a deficiency as soon as possible. Vitamin B12 can interact or interfere with medicines that you take, and in some cases, medicines can lower vitamin B12 levels in the body. Tell your doctor, pharmacist, and other health care providers about any dietary supplements and medicines you take. They can tell you if those dietary supplements might interact or interfere with your prescription or overthe-counter medicines or if the medicines might interfere with how your body absorbs, uses, or breaks down nutrients *Information provided by the Office of Dietary Supplements National Institutes of Health
