Reflections More than a century of songs and stories remain vibrant and alive within the Opera House. We are truly indebted to those who came before us for their foresight in preserving this treasuretrove of dreams. We are privileged to have the opportunity to gather in the Opera House with friends from near and far and share in so many wonderful moments. Each season we search for an interesting mix of performers to entertain and enlighten our audiences. We know that you and the performers find that the warmth and excellent acoustics of the Opera House are just part of the reason so many of you return year after year. We also thank our sponsors, volunteers and all the Friends of the Opera House. Without the support of our many friends, the continued health and success of the theater would simply not be possible. As Bob Dylan wrote, “I’ll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours.” See you at the show! William Brehm, Christina Dollhausen, Director Event Coordinator

Stoughton Opera House: 2014 2015 Season Your Seat is Waiting . . . Fall Season 2014 Pokey LaFarge’s Central Time Tour Sat, Sept 20 • 7:30pm
Pokey LaFarge’s Central Time Tour is a musical revue of American traditions for the modern age. Special guest and master of ceremonies Dom Flemons (founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) guides an evening of performances by Pokey LaFarge and his band, Joel Savoy, Jesse Lége and the Cajun Country Revival, The Tillers and The Loot Rock Gang. This diverse lineup presents styles ranging from string ragtime to country blues to Appalachian folk to Cajun dancehall music and beyond. A self-contained traveling festival, Pokey LaFarge’s Central Time Tour showcases some of the finest present-day interpreters of real American music for a swinging night of entertainment. LaFarge not only remembers the good times—he is the good times! www.pokeylafarge.net
Gregory Alan Isakov Wed, Sept 24 • 7:30pm
With each gently-picked guitar note and almost-whispered lyric, Gregory Alan Isakov establishes a feeling of communion with the listener. The South African-born, Colorado-based singer-songwriter (and sometime gardener-farmer) evokes songwriters we’ve lost—a little Nick Drake, a little Elliot Smith—as he whisks listeners away to some far-off place in their minds. His indie-folk song-craft lends to the deepest lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. Described as “strong, subtle, a lyrical genius,” Isakov will take you on a journey you will not forget. www.gregoryalanisakov.com

Carolina Chocolate Drops
Thurs, Sept 25 & Fri, Sept 26 • 7:30pm With their 2010 debut, “Genuine Negro Jig”—which garnered a Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy—The Carolina Chocolate Drops proved that the old-time fiddle and banjo-based music they’d so passionately researched and performed could be a living, breathing, ever-evolving sound. With material culled from the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, incorporating blues, jazz and folk balladry alongside crackling string-band tunes, CDD highlights the central role African Americans have played in shaping our nation’s popular music. Through several changes in membership, the Drops continue to prosper under the leadership of singer/ fiddler/multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens, whom super-producer T-Bone Burnett recently called the most profound musician active today. More than simply revivalists, The Carolina Chocolate Drops have evolved into American tradition-bearers of the first order, with a show to rival any in the business. www.carolinachocolatedrops.com

The Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Steam Show Sat, Sept 27 • 7:30pm
The Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Steam Show will come rolling into Stoughton on a Bluebird bus, with Fred behind the wheel, occasionally under the hood, and always starring in the show. A lifelong musician from the wilds of Southern Ontario, Fred has had songs covered by some of the biggest names in Nashville, including Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, and Miranda Lambert. He and his steampunk band play originals infused with rock and roll, Motown, folk, country, and Tejano influences, full of richly drawn characters, clever ideas, and great lines. If you’re a true Fredhead, you already know; if you’re not (yet), find out what the fuss is all about. These road dogs have a few new tricks up their leather sleeves! www.fredeaglesmith.com
Junior Brown Fri, Oct 3 • 7:30pm
If you haven’t seen Junior Brown yet, you need to “guit with it!” A one-man musical hot fusion machine, he’s coming to town with his guit-steel, a unique hybrid contraption that’s part electric guitar and part country steel guitar. Although commonly described as a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Ernest Tubb, there’s a lot more to say about Junior Brown. He’s just about the best surf guitarist around, and he’s a wonderful composer of traditional country songs—the kind in which each outrageous pun leads you deeper into an emotional blind alley. Come check out the performer voted #1 House Rocker by the readers of Guitar Player! www.juniorbrown.com
Mason Jennings Thurs, Oct 9 • 7:30pm
The Wood Brothers Thurs, Oct 2 • 7:30pm
Genuine charisma sets The Wood Brothers apart from other contemporary rock bands. Many knew Chris as the virtuoso bass ace of avant-garde jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood—but that was before he joined with brother and guitarist Oliver Wood. Together, the brothers created something organic and new. Their brand of Americana, a fusion of two different musical paths, has evolved from a genre-bending project into a highly popular full-time band, fusing Southern rock, American traditionals, New Orleans funk, and Manhattan free-jazz seamlessly, flawlessly, lovingly. Since their inception, the Wood Brothers have developed from a stripped-down, roots-rock-inspired duo with jazz leanings to a rollicking trio capable of holding their own captivating theatres filled with a thousand fans. www.thewoodbros.com
Singer-songwriter Mason Jennings blends the personal insights of a poet, the political broadsides of a protest singer, and the broad musical eclecticism of a jazz musician with a rock & roller’s passion. The result made him one of the most talked-about new artists on the acoustic music scene and earned him a loyal cult following, as he moved over 30,000 copies of his first two albums and sold out shows around the country without the benefit of a major-label publicity department. The indie pop-folk singer is known for his simple, catchy melodies, intimate lyrics, and literary and historical themes. www.masonjennings.com

Ruth Moody Band Fri, Oct 10 • 7:30pm
Founding member of the internationally renowned, Billboard-charting trio The Wailin’ Jennys, Ruth Moody has performed in sold-out venues around the world, made numerous criticallyacclaimed albums, and appeared more than a dozen times on the national radio show A Prairie Home Companion. Ruth is an artist of exceptional depth and grace, lauded for her ethereal vocals, impressive multi-instrumentalism, and masterful songwriting. Written with a maturity and wisdom that belies her age, her songs are timeless, universal, and exceptionally well-crafted, all sung with an intimacy and honesty that is unmistakably hers. www.ruthmoody.com
Joan Osborne Sat, Oct 11 • 7:30pm
Osborne took music charts by storm with the religiously controversial “One Of Us,” an instant hit on her triple-platinum market debut. A welcome new feminist face in a world between blues and soul, pop and country, her talents landed her on stage with Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith, Melissa Etheridge, Taj Mahal, Luciano Pavarotti and the Chieftains. Osborne made it clear that she was more interested in musical integrity and creative longevity than transient pop success, however, and she earned a reputation as a commanding, passionate performer and a frank, emotionally evocative songwriter. The seven-time Grammy nominee’s eighth studio album was released spring of 2014, and on Love and Hate, her soulful song-craft reaches a new level of musical and lyrical resonance. www.joanosborne.com

Todd Snider
Pieta Brown
Tuesday Oct 14 •7:30pm
While protest and topical music tend to be solemn and serious, with Todd Snider it’s the opposite. One of roots music’s slyest, sharpest singer-songwriters, Snider inhabits fictional characters with humor and imagination. The folk-Americana-alt-country artist creates vividly detailed, thoroughly memorable compositions—but provocative lyrics are only part of the story. The rest is in the delivery: deliciously skewed punch lines, red-blooded melodic hooks, shambling grooves and a slacker-next-door delivery that makes clear this guy doesn’t have a self-righteous bone in his body. www.toddsnider.net
Wanda Jackson Thurs, Oct 16 • 7:30pm
Wanda Jackson was only halfway through high school when, in 1954, country singer Hank Thompson heard her on an Oklahoma City radio show and asked her to record with his band—and by the end of the decade, she had become one of America’s first major female country and rockabilly singers. Encouraged by touring partner Elvis Presley to pursue rock and roll, Jackson soon became “The Queen of Rockabilly.” In 2009, she was inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” and the following year, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Music Awards. Her fame in the glamorous world of rock and roll notwithstanding, the years found Jackson turning more and more to country and gospel music: at heart she was “just country folk, you know?” But it’s indisputable—no matter what she plays, she’s a legend! www.wandajackson.com

Fri, Oct 17 • 7:30pm
Pieta Brown grew up exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, beloved folk singer Greg Brown. She made her first recording with (now) frequent collaborator, guitar-ace and GrammyAward-winning producer Bo Ramsey, and has since continued to reveal new layers as a songwriter and performer. In the last 4 years Pieta has released two critically-acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid to her distinct sound and style and the power of her singing and songwriting. One of modern Americana’s true gems, she has toured the U.S., Australia and Canada with such names as Mark Knopfler, John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico. www.pietabrown.com
In Memoriam Robert DeGroot Robert DeGroot, dedicated volunteer, Board Member & a key person during the Opera House restoration, passed away this summer. Bob kept the Opera House flame alive by passing on his knowledge and encouraging all of us along the way. He will be missed, but with each note played we will honor his memory.
Sweet Honey in the Rock – 40th Anniversary Wed, Oct 22 • 7:30pm
Rooted in a deeply held commitment to create music out of the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions, Grammy Award winning Sweet Honey In The Rock possesses a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. This season, the five-voice choir of African-American women celebrates 40 years of inspiring music, delivered with its signature message of social justice and equality. Come get your groove on and be inspired! www.sweethoneyintherock.org
Noah Gundersen Thurs, Oct 23 • 7:30pm
Noah Gundersen’s live shows are unforgettable. If you have not yet heard of this Seattle based singer-songwriter, he is one to pay attention to. With the release of his first full length album, Noah is headed into 2014 with some strong credits under his belt. He has released several notable EP’s over the past few years, and has masterfully self-produced his newest album, Ledges. He has also had a number of songs featured on various TV shows, most notably, FX’s Sons of Anarchy and One Tree Hill. There is an unrestrained, smoldering earnestness in Noah’s voice that resonates in your bones. One hundred percent transparent, you can hear if he’s grimacing or grinning as he sings his stories. As a songwriter, his lyrics delve into the realities of life, love, and loss. His honesty in addressing life’s bigger questions seems to resonate with audiences on a genuinely personal level. A good musician can bring you to your feet, and a great one can knock you to your knees. Noah Gundersen can do both. www.noahgundersenmusic.com
Willie Watson
Mikaela Davis supports Fri, Oct 24 • 7:30pm During his decade-plus tenure with Old Crow Medicine Show, Willie’s driving rhythm guitar, transcendent lead vocals and pure tenor were an essential part of the band’s success (over 600,000 records sold, not to mention the platinum-selling single “Wagon Wheel”), but nowhere in OCMS’s catalog does his instrumental artistry and vocal prowess shine through as in his new solo incarnation. Reaching back for inspiration to such artists as Utah Phillips, Leadbelly, and even the 1930s folk-country crossover artist Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Willie reinterprets and gives new life to a vast catalog of traditional songs that fit seamlessly beside self-penned classics cut from the very same cloth, creating a rich new patchwork of Americana. Willie’s new album is produced by David Rawlings, who has worked with both Gillian Welch and OCMS. www.williewatson.com Indie harpist/singer-songwriter Mikaela Davis supports. Her hypnotizing voice with the dreamy wash of her giant instrument’s strings is engaging, enthralling, enticing, and entirely beautiful. www.mikaeladavis.com

All the familiar characters are here: Lucy, Mina, Van Helsing, Harker, Renfield—plus gargoyles and vampire brides. Celebrate Halloween with this spellbinding production. Agnes Obel Sun, Nov 2 • 7:30pm
Danish singer/songwriter Agnes Obel took up the piano at a very young age, honing her craft amidst the strains of Bartok and Chopin emanating from the fingers of her musician mother. She drew inspiration from the work of Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson, and it was between those two worlds that her own sound began to emerge. Citing influences as diverse as PJ Harvey and Claude DeBussy, the artist draws comparisons to the likes of Ane Brun, Eva Cassidy, and Joni Mitchell. Pure, austere, and remarkably poised, she plays with a pristine mix of instrumentals and atmospheric, melancholy balladry, making her both a critical and commercial success—especially in her native Denmark, where her first record went double platinum. www.agnesobel.com
Aoife O’Donovan and Noam Pikelny Thurs, Nov 6 • 7:30pm
Arguably two of the most celebrated musicians of their generation within the roots music field, O’Donovan and Pikelny have been crossing paths at venues and festivals for the last decade. Finally they’ve joined musical forces, and when you hear them together, you’ll be so glad they did. Perhaps the greatest banjo player in a growing movement of young and upcoming bluegrass musicians, Noam is a founding member of the hugely successful bluegrass group The Punch Brothers, and was previously in Leftover Salmon as well as the John Cowan Band. Aoife O’Donovan is best known as the lead singer for the progressive bluegrass band Crooked Still and a member of the female folk-noir trio, Sometymes Why. Aoife (pronounced “ee-fuh”) has also recently written songs for Alison Krauss, and toured with Garrison Keillor and A Prairie Home Companion Radio Romance Tour. Rounding out the ensemble are bassist Barry Bales (Alison Krauss & Union Station) and fiddler Shad Cobb (John Cowan Band). The quartet will hit the road in the autumn of 2014, playing a mixture of vocal and instrumental music, ripe with intricate three-part harmony and grounded firmly in tradition. www.noampikelny.com www.aoifeodonovan.com
“Spider” John Koerner
Fri, Nov 7 • 7:30pm
“Spider” John Koerner, traditional American folk and country blues musician, rhythmic guitarist, song-crafter, singer, and humorist, shapes his musical style from a solid foundation of study of the old blues masters, respect for the traditional song, and a firm command of his source material. In 1958, aged 20, John became a student of the burgeoning folk scene and, with a borrowed guitar and a Burl Ives song book, began a journey that helped shape the course of American country blues and folk music. Come find out what 50 years of exploration in the ranges of traditional American song sounds like! www.mwt.net/~koerner/

Having More Retirement Accounts is Not the Same as Having More Money. When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees. Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one statement can make it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals. *Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.
To learn why consolidating your retirement accounts to Edward Jones makes sense, call your local financial advisor today. Thomas M Fendrick Financial Advisor .

Stoughton Chamber Singers • Pastorale Friday, Nov 14 • 7:30pm
Musically, the word pastorale has a variety of meanings. It may be a selection that reflects the serenity and simplicity of rural life and rural scenes or it more specifically may be music that refers to the lives of shepherds. This concert will feature music from through the ages that illustrates both of these facets of the “Pastorale.” The Stoughton Chamber Singers and the Bel Canto String Ensemble are Stoughton area musicians who present two concerts each year to celebrate the art of choral and instrumental music.
Tony Rocker and the Comeback Special Thurs, Nov 13 • 3pm & 7pm
What separates the cream of the crop from all those who attempt to pay homage to the King? Come see Tony Rocker who marvelously performs as Elvis and you will find out first hand! Milwaukee-based Tony Rocker didn’t quite fit in growing up—he was stuck in another era, always listening to music of the 50s and 60s. He remembers listening to Elvis singing and imagining himself on stage performing. “If only I had the opportunity,” he thought, “I know I would sing with heart.” If you don’t feel what you‘re singing, he knew, you can’t expect an audience to respond. But Tony Rocker never had that problem, and when the opportunity finally came to perform an Elvis Tribute show, “it felt right and there was a feeling of transformation that’s indescribable.” Tony Rocker and the Comeback Special band have a devoted fan base and a tribute of great respect and sincerity. Tony’s uncanny ability to bring Elvis to life on stage is so authentic, you will swear Elvis has re-entered the building! www.tonyrocker.com
Darlingside Sat, Nov 15 • 7:30pm
With a quartet of distinct voices clustered around a single microphone, Massachusetts-based indie-folk band Darlingside effortlessly draws audiences into its lush, dynamic musical world. The band’s sound, characterized by classical strings, tight vocal arrangements, bluegrass and rock instrumentation, and smart lyricism, is the product of complete collaboration among four close friends. The group has no front man; instead, lead vocals are traded from moment to moment, and each song features a new combination of instruments and textures, pulling heavily from folk, retro-pop, barbershop, and chamber music. www.darlingside.com

Henry Rollins: Spoken Word
Rosanne Cash with John Leventhal
In describing Henry Rollins, the tendency is to try to squeeze as many labels as possible into a single sentence. “Rollins is many things,” says the Washington Post, “diatribist, confessor, provocateur, humorist, even motivational speaker…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.” Entertainment Weekly’s list includes “Punk Rock icon. Spoken word poet. Actor. Author. DJ. Is there anything this guy can’t do?” TV Guide has more concisely called him a “Renaissance Man” – but if Henry Rollins could be reduced to a single word, it would undoubtedly be “workaholic.” For better than a quarter century, Rollins has toured the world as a spoken word artist, as frontman for both Rollins Band and Black Flag and – without a microphone – as a solitary traveler with insatiable curiosity bypassing the resorts in favor of places like Siberia, Senegal, Burma and Bangladesh. Described by the New York Daily News as “some of the most provocative chit-chat around,” Henry’s spoken word performances are a seamless (yet seemingly extemporaneous) mix of humor and outrage, pop culture, political commentary and personal anecdote, healthy skepticism, and rugged optimism. www.henryrollins.com
One of the most compelling figures in popular music, with a body of work encompassing country, rock, roots and pop influences, Rosanne Cash inherited a reverence for song and profound artistry - and an equal duty to find insights of her own. The oldest daughter of country music icon Johnny Cash and stepdaughter of June Carter Cash, she holds a lineage rooted in the very beginning of American country music, with its deep cultural and historical connections to the South. She has responded to this heritage with 15 albums of extraordinary songs, earning a Grammy and nominations for 12 more, the Americana Honors and Awards’ Album of the Year Award, and 21 top40 hits, including 11 No. 1 singles. Her latest album, “The River and the Thread,” written with her longtime collaborator, producer, guitarist and husband John Leventhal, reflects journeys through the Southern states which inevitably reconnect her to her roots. With just the right amount of patience and storytelling this new album is an elegant, mature work of a songwriter and performer at the height of her powers. www.rosannecash.com

Hot Rize
Thurs, Nov 20 • 7:30pm Hot Rize has been astounding the bluegrass world with their fresh, contemporary approach to traditional music ever since their formation in 1978. Named after the secret ingredient in Martha White flour (a longterm sponsor of bluegrass music), the band’s unique and progressive style of bluegrass, powerful original songs, tight-as-a-drum ensemble playing, and dynamic stage show quickly made them stars on the major festival circuit and far beyond. In 1990 Hot Rize was named Entertainer of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the first such award ever given out by the organization. They picked up a Grammy nomination the next year, also winning IBMA Song of the Year. From 1978 to 1998, Hot Rize was Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Charles Sawtelle, and Nick Forster. Starting in 2002, three years after Charles’ death in 1999, Tim, Pete and Nick re-formed the band, adding Bryan Sutton on guitar. www.hotrize.com

Chuck Mead (of BR549) & His Grassy Knoll Boys Sat, Nov 22 • 7:30pm
Chuck Mead had a heck of a run with the band BR549 in the 1990s. The AltCountry outfit, named after the phone number Junior Samples would give out as part of a regular skit on that great American TV show Hee Haw, was one of the premier Rockabilly-band-with-a-Punk-edge groups of the day. They were kind of like The Blasters, only less California and more Tennessee. After the Grammy-nominated BR549 broke up, Mead began to write music, lectured at Vanderbilt University and became the music director of the hit Broadway show Million Dollar Quartet. Laced with dark humor and fueled by the Boys’ raucous waves of honky tonk, rockabilly, western swing, and Appalachian-streaked primal rock ‘n’ roll, Mead is a true world-class performer and his backing band is 100% awesome. If you like rockabilly and country, do not miss this show! www.chuckmead.com

Southwest Louisiana-based guitarist, songwriter, and singer Sonny Landreth is a musician’s musician whose unorthodox virtuosic slide guitar style is unique and unforgettable. He plays with the slide on his little finger, using the other fingers to fret notes on the guitar’s neck, all while playing chords and melodies in his right hand. A formidable studio musician, Landreth has built up a loyal following among his fans and musical peers. Joining him on stage is Austin-based Dobro and steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, whose ability to complement any song or step out with a tasteful, imaginative solo has made her one of the most in-demand musicians on the American roots music scene. Her talent is spoken for by the caliber of artists she’s worked with, including Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Dave Alvin, Rod Stewart, Asleep At The Wheel, Marcia Ball, Jorma Kaukonen, Leon Redbone, BeauSoleil, Daniel Lanois, Redd Volkaert, and Peter Rowan. www.cindycashdollar.com www.sonnylandreth.com

After the screening, Jerry will lead us in a discussion of winters in rural Wisconsin. www.jerryapps.com

The People Brothers Band Fri, Feb 13 • 7:30pm
From humble beginnings at late-night open jams in a downtown Madison bar, the People Brothers have solidified into an eight-piece Rhythm & Soul power-house. Their eclectic blend of original grooves, conscious lyrics, soulfully mastered vocal and instrumental work, and diverse self-tailored covers holds a crowd captivated. From funk to soul, rock to reggae, folk to R&B, they’re a hard act to pigeon hole and a great band to experience live! As a testament to their passion for live music and adventure, the PBB have produced, hosted, and headlined their own grass-roots music and camping festival every year since 2009. www.peoplebrothers.com
Iowan Joe Price’s old-school guitar blues sounds like nothing else. The rhythms bounce and hop like a super-ball on caffeine—at times, it sounds like two or three guitars at once, but it’s all just Joe slapping and hammering those strings, layering vibrations and tones over each other into this heady cocktail of joyous musical energy. The crazy tunings, the breakneck rhythms and the growling, dancing bass notes work together to weave a unique and inimitable sound. Joe’s wife Vicki might be Iowa’s answer to Maria d’Amato, with strong currents of the likes of Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette—but her Mississippi River vocal twang is rooted solidly in the blues. Her disciplined guitar style provides a spine for Joe’s slide and lead work, and the two styles dovetail into a coherent convincing whole. From coast to coast, and from concerts to clubs to outdoor festivals, the Prices’ singular vision and dazzling, irresistible live performances continue to etch a steady upward arc. www.joepriceblues.com
John Gorka & Cheryl Wheeler
Sat, Feb 21 • 7:30pm
Lou & Peter Berryman Sat, Feb 14 • 7:30pm
Though few people seem to be aware of it, Lou and Peter Berryman have written scores of love songs since giving up on their early high school depression ballads of the mid 60s. It’s all there: Love of dog, love of car, love of forsythia, love of refrigerator, love of GPS, love of sleep, love of yodel, love of hair, love of telephone, love of walk, love of spouse, love of memory, love of potato. On Valentine’s Day of 2015, Lou and Peter will bring their whole weird collection of heartwarmers to celebrate their undying love of the Stoughton Opera House and all it represents. Come watch them sail through this gala evening of not-so-smarmy love ditties with all the passion of two people sitting down to two good sandwiches. It will be dark in the Opera House, so you can kiss your sweetie or text your ex and no one will know. www.louandpeter.com
World-renowned singer-songwriter John Gorka emerged during the Greenwich Village folk scene with a stunningly soulful baritone voice and rich, multifaceted songs full of depth and beauty. Since then, he has built up an impressive repertoire, with songs covered and recorded by a slew of artists including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. Gorka will be performing with Cheryl Wheeler, whose songs have been passed around with equal enthusiasm by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Bette Midler, and Kathy Mattea. While Wheeler’s songs often share the emotional quality of Gorka’s, painting portraits that draw people in, be prepared to laugh: she is a natural storyteller and gifted comedian! Marty Stuart is a five time GRAMMY-winner, platinum recording artist, Grand Ole Opry star, country music archivist, Southern culture historian, photographer, musician, songwriter, TV show host, charismatic force of nature, and country music fan. Stuart has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music with a missionary’s zeal. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ‘70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band during the ‘80s and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ‘90s. Stuart’s zest for every conceivable flavor of country music is also seen regularly by TV viewers these days, on RFD-TV’s The Marty Stuart Show. As musicologist Peter North cites, “He has without question evolved into one of the most important roots musicians and visionaries in America.” Stay tuned. www.martystuart.net
The Kingston Trio Wed, Mar 4 • 7:30pm
In 1957, The Kingston Trio emerged from San Francisco’s North Beach club scene to take the country by storm, bringing the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. During the late 50s and early 60s, the Trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, while influencing the musical tastes of a generation. The Kingston Trio of today, Bill Zorn, George Grove and Rick Dougherty, are continuing the Kingston Trio legacy to fantastic reviews, command performances and standing ovations wherever they perform. The Kingston Trio was the number one vocal group in the world, a musical and cultural phenomenon whose record sales and concert draws were matched only by The Beatles. In a feat yet to be surpassed, Billboard magazine listed four Kingston Trio albums in their Top 10 at the same time. The group has also won two Grammy awards and numerous gold records. Through changing times, the Trio has played on, remaining popular for a simple reason… great songs that sound as good today as the first time you heard them. Over forty years after “Tom Dooley” shot to the top of the charts, the Trio is still on the road bringing back all the great memories and making new ones. www.kingstontrio.com

Count this Penny
Fri, Mar 6 • 7:30pm Originally from Tennessee, this duo brings a sweet sound fresh from the hills: like a pure mountain stream, their “Appalachian pop” runs gritty underneath, spilling over with crystal clear harmonies. On guitar and bass, Amanda and Allen Rigell tell stories through song, their voices—a bit of gravel and glass—intertwining to form gorgeous textures. The musical traditions of the mountains are a cornerstone of Count This Penny’s sound: Appalachia was their back yards, their front porches, and they take on the voices of well-crafted characters in ways that resonate empathy. Though the subjects are often bleak, the melodies and harmonies are cathartic. The Rigells’ talent and love of the music has seen them on A Prairie Home Companion, WPR, Wisconsin Public Television’s 30 Minute Music Hour, and WDVX’s Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, TN. Let Count This Penny take you on a journey: it’s worth every penny! www.countthispenny.com
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage
Sat, Mar 7 •7:30pm When the Queen of Bluegrass comes to town, you don’t want to miss out! Performing at age 3 as “The Sally Mountain Show” on her family’s local TV and Radio shows, Rhonda started early and never stopped shining. She is the only artist to receive seven consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year titles from the International Bluegrass Music Association; she has also seen multiple Grammy nominations and 5 consecutive Entertainer of the Year Awards from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America. In 2010, she received the prestigious “Star Award” from the Bluegrass Heritage Foundation. With over 80 awards, her band is the most awarded group in bluegrass music, incorporating savvy contemporary touches while drawing deeply from the haunting mountain soul of classic Monroe-styled bluegrass. Constantly forging connections with fans through her invigorating performances, she continues to grow as a songwriter, with an optimism that bursts through the speakers, both believable and inspiring. www.rhondavincent.com

Del McCoury Band
AssIsted LIvIng
Fri, Mar 13 • 7:30pm
The bluegrass legend is back! Owning one of the most recognizable high lonesome tenors in bluegrass history, Del McCoury is a bluegrass icon that has managed to stay relevant, fresh and inspired throughout his 50+ year career. McCoury, who got his big break in 1963 when the one and only Bill Monroe invited him to join his Blue Grass Boys, just celebrated his band’s 2014 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album for The Streets of Baltimore. Though considered a traditional bluegrass band, Del and his band (which includes his sons, Ronnie and Rob McCoury on mandolin and banjo respectively, Jason Carter on fiddle and Alan Bartram on bass) have been anything but traditional when it comes to their collaborations. They have been able to stride the divide between traditional and progressive bluegrass like no other group before or since. To hear bluegrass performed live by the Del McCoury Band is to hear a direct link between the old-time music of Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs and modern roots music. Mostly, though, it’s a chance to hear honest country-soul singing, plain and simple. www.delmccouryband.com

Janis Ian & Tom Paxton Fri, Mar 20 • 7:30pm
After 50 years in folk music, these songwriting legends have gone far beyond proving their artistic and musical talents: through their dedicated lives, they’ve demonstrated a deep lifelong passion to their craft and social ideals. Reviewers have called Janis’ shows “overwhelming to the spirit and soul,” while Tom’s haunting melodies and profound lyrics have become part of American heritage. Both artists are multiple-time Grammy nominees, with so many singers recording and covering their music that they are considered “musicians’ musicians.” As loud as their achievements speak for them, however, the greatness of each is most clearly seen in the impact they have had on a culture over three generations. www.tompaxton.com www.janisian.com

Heather Maloney Fri, Mar 27 • 7:30pm
Folk, pop, rock, indie, Celtic, soulful. Try to describe the musical style of the extremely talented singer-songwriter Heather Maloney and you’ll likely get tongue-tied. Filled with harmonies, intimate lyrics and a unique blend of influences, Maloney’s music belongs to a genre all its own. Growing up in New Jersey, singing along to her mother’s record player, Maloney says she knew she was meant to sing, but did not yet know precisely what. Ironically, a few years spent at a silent retreat was the key to finding her voice and the confidence to make some noise. Heather has received numerous accolades for her startlingly soulful voice (compared to Joni Mitchell) and literate songwriting exploring themes of spirituality, transformation, and impermanence. A wonderful talent not to be missed. www.heathermaloney.com

Hilde, a force of unbridled energy coupled with childlike willfulness, enters the master builder’s home and head, trailing mysterious talk of past promises. As she urges Solness to ever greater and less sustainable heights, his tragedy-haunted wife Aline watches from the sidelines, an unwilling participant in an off-kilter love triangle. There follows a battle of truth, history and youth, ending in Hilde persuading Solness to once again climb a tower of his own building, his final ascent. The Commonweal Theatre, based in Lanesboro, MN, is dedicated to delighting and challenging audiences with the works of Henrik Ibsen, the Father of Modern Drama. The most famous of Norwegian playwrights, Ibsen’s nonconformist views fill his plays with metaphors that paint a picture of contemporary society, despite being written over 100 years ago. www.commonwealtheatre.org
David Lindley
Fri, April 10 • 7:30pm
Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word “eclectic.” Lindley, well known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band El Rayo-X, has long championed the concept of world music. The David Lindley electro-acoustic performance effortlessly combines American folk, blues, and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish musical sources. Lindley incorporates an incredible array of stringed instruments including but not limited to Kona and Weissenborn Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Turkish saz and chumbus, Middle Eastern oud, and Irish bouzouki. The eye-poppingly clad “Mr. Dave’s” uncanny vocal mimicry and demented sense of humor make his onstage banter a highlight of the show. www.davidlindley.com
Robbie Fulks Sat, April 11 • 7:30pm
Forget the labels… “Insurgent,”“Retro,”“Alternative,” … and focus instead on the music. Some might try to copy old music, but Robbie Fulks knows it, loves it, and brings its spirit, its humor, and its otherworldliness to his own work. He’s the man who famously gave Nashville the middlefinger salute-in-song and then devoted an entire album to rare and obscure country songs that almost no one in latter-day Nashville had even heard of. And while most current country music is calculated to form an inoffensive backdrop to the suburban shopping experience, Robbie Fulks writes songs that make you think and feel and quite often laugh out loud. Widely regarded as one of the most gifted songwriters to ever ply the trade, he can sing “Eggs” and “Sing a Sad Song” back to back and mean ‘em both. His unique style of soulful, spirited alt country will get your chest thumping and your toes tapping. www.robbiefulks.com
Gibson Brothers Fri, April 17 • 7:30pm
Plucking away with unfaltering determination and skill, The Gibson Brothers emerged onto the bluegrass scene, with Leigh Gibson on guitar and Eric Gibson on the banjo. From their humble beginning in upstate New York, the brothers have, since, carried their careers thousands of miles to play hundreds of shows. It has been a journey on which they have fine-tuned their abilities to blend powerhouse harmonies with virtuosic picking, and the caliber of their live performance is a clear reflection of their dedicated and developed musicianship. Voted 2013 Entertainers of the Year at the IBMA World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, N.C., the Gibson Brothers also won Vocal Group of the Year, Song of the Year (“They Called It Music”) and Songwriter of the Year. Ranging from fun and energetic to serious and deliberate, the Gibson Brothers’ music has never been more impressive. www.gibsonbrothers.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Fri, April 24 • 7:30pm
Shook Twins Sat, April 18 •7:30pm
Identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook, along with Kyle Volkman and Niko Daoussis, form the core of this eclectic and talented quartet. Beautiful twin harmonies, layered upon acoustic and electric instrumentation (banjo, guitar, electric and upright bass, mandolin, electric guitar, electronic drums, glockenspiel, ukulele, banjo drumming and their signature golden EGG) coupled with Laurie’s inventive use of percussive and ambient vocal loops, and Katelyn’s re-purposed telephone microphone, set their sound apart, creating a unique and eccentric blend of folk, roots, groove and soul. The Shook Twins have shared the stage with artists including Ryan Adams, David Grisman, Blizten Trapper, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sarah Jarosz, The Indigo Girls, The Head and The Heart, The Lumineers and many more. Imaginative, amusing and whimsical, the Shook Twins’ laid-back and fun stage presence draws the listener in, and takes the audience away on the adventure that is their live show. www.shooktwins.com

It must be a crazy world when “authentic” is a term used to separate an artist from the pack. Charlie Parr is a folk and country blues musician who is routinely labeled “authentic” and “the real deal” by fans and critics alike. Charlie shows up with a lived-in rasp of a voice, National resonator and 12-string acoustic guitars, a banjo and a batch of his own songs and well-traveled numbers by Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton, Spider John and other cohorts from another time. He lays it on you, and you sense that the gamblers, the union workers, the criminals and the sinners that wander around his songs are peering right over your shoulder. His self-taught mix of slide, finger-picking and quasi-frailing technique, together with a voice that’s low on drama and high on impact is something to behold. The stories he tells get into some dark spots; that place where regret and remorse part company. A bit of a modern take on timeless conditions. Check him out and you’ll probably agree, Charlie Parr is coming from a very real place, and this has, in fact, always been a crazy world. www.charlieparr.com

Hot Club of Cowtown is a rowdy blend of Gypsy Jazz and the American Songbook. Fusing western swing and gypsy jazz, this internationally-touring trio will have you tapping your toes all night long. The fiddle, upright bass, and guitar merge together, creating music that hearkens to the days of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys, incorporating elements of the Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz sound. Top that off with tight harmonies and undeniable energy, and you’ve got something special. Spontaneous and quick witted, the members of Hot Club of Cowtown are experts on expansion. Their chemistry and vivacity pour out of every note, plucked or bowed. Beginning in the late nineties, Hot Club of Cowtown has used its uniquely international sound to tour the world, making friends and fans in The United States, United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Oman, and Armenia.
