The Harold LopezNussa Trio Sat, Sept 15 • 7:30pm

Havana-based composer and pianist Harold LopezNussa travels smoothly between classical, native and jazz inspirations in his recent debut release, A El Viaje (The Journey). The album reached No. 1 on iTunes Jazz Chart and No. 2 on Amazon’s Jazz Chart marking a profound musician of rising stature who has fully integrated his classical training and love of the jazz continuum with his Cuban roots and soul. www.haroldlopeznussa.com

Garnet Rogers & Archie Fisher

Presented by Mad Folk Sat, Sept 22 • 7:30pm

Garnet Rogers: One of the most influential acts in North American folk music and hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet Rogers is a man with a powerful physical presence — close to six and a half feet tall — with a voice to match. An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. garnetrogers.com Archie Fisher: Beloved worldwide as one of the finest traditional singers of all time, MBE Archie Fisher is recognized as Scotland’s foremost folk troubadour with a career spanning over four decades. A talent that transcends generations and genres (Scottish indie band Frightened Rabbit had him sing on their song, “The Work”), Fisher came out of the vital UK folk scene that spawned the Incredible String Band, John Renbourn, Steeleye Span and Bert Jansch.

Sean Rowe

Thur, Sept 27 • 7:30pm Sean Rowe came of age listening to his father’s record collection that included The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley, but in his late teens it was R.L. Burnside, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding and Ray Charles that came to epitomize Rowe’s strongest influences. Intimate and honest, Rowe’s deep baritone anchors his songs that pay close attention to the natural world, sparked by his youth in Troy, NY, and extend to his personal present. www.seanrowe.net

“The head-banging speed of a thrash metal band channeled through flat-picked guitar and mandolin, with a touch of end-ofthe-world psychedelia.” —Rolling Stone

“Like the best baritones, Rowe can sound sinister or sexy, sage-like or sweet.” —NY Daily News

Billy Strings

Fri, Sept 28, 7:30pm

Billy Strings plays hard and he lives hard, picking so fast and intensely that he’s known to break multiple strings per song, and basing the songs he writes on the hard lives he grew up around in the abandoned rural communities of America. His new album, Turmoil & Tinfoil, taps into a deep vein of psychedelia in Americana, referencing everything from the Dead to Sturgill Simpson, but all underlaid by Billy’s undeniable virtuosity and his knowledge of the roots of American music. He’s one of the most beloved young bluegrass guitarists today within the bluegrass community, and his front porch in East Nashville is constantly filled up with Nashville’s best roots musicians just picking up a storm. www.billystrings.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Peter Mulvey Sat, Sept 29 • 7:30pm

Milwaukee’s Peter Mulvey is an iconoclast within the singer/songwriter world. Mulvey began his career busking on the streets of Dublin and Boston, leading to his first record deal and a leap to full-time national and international touring in the early nineties. Restless and inventive, he has made seventeen records, spanning rock & roll, folk, jazz, spoken word, and Americana. A long-standing gig at the National Youth Science Camp led to a spoken word piece, “Vlad the Astrophysicist”, which became a TEDx talk and an illustrated book. In 2007 he began an annual late summer tour by bicycle instead of by car and airplane. Mulvey continues to tour, playing over a hundred shows a year, as he has for the past twenty five years. This is the core of what he does: music, in a room, performed for a live audience. www.petermulvey.com

An Evening with the Julian Lage Trio

Thur, Oct 4 • 7:30pm

On Modern Lore, Julian Lage’s second studio recording with his trio, the composer and guitarist focuses on the groove, building his melodies and solos around the work of the prodigious rhythm section of double bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Modern Lore finds Lage playfully flipping the script he followed on his acclaimed 2016 Mack Avenue debut, Arclight. That album—produced, like Modern Lore, by Lage’s friend and collaborator, the singer-songwriter Jesse Harris—was his first trio set on electric guitar and found Lage inspired by the sounds and the attitude of the freewheeling, pre-bebop jazz era, when, as he puts it, “Country music and jazz and swing were in this weird wild-west period.” This time he incorporates the sensibility, if not the outright sound, of early rock & roll, a similarly hybrid form driven by rhythm, personality and a passion for the electric guitar. www.julianlage.com

”A guitarist with roots tangled up in jazz, folk, classical and country music, he has spent most of his life bathed in bright expectant light.” —-New York Times

Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley and Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen

Fri, Oct 12 • 7:30pm

Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley: Based on a mutual love of bluegrass, country, blues, western swing, and string band music of all kinds, the partnership of dobro player, Rob Ickes, and acoustic/electric guitarist, Trey Hensley, continues to delight and astound audiences of traditional American music around the globe. www.robandtrey.com Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen: Since Frank Solivan left the cold climes of Alaska for the bluegrass hotbed of Washington, D.C., he’s built a reputation as a monster mandolinist—and become a major festival attraction with his band, Dirty Kitchen. Solivan, with banjoist Mike Munford, 2013 IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, award winning guitarist Chris Luquette and bassist Jeremy Middleton, simmer a bluegrass/newgrass stew from instrumental, vocal and songwriting skills so hot, they were named IBMA’s 2016 Instrumental Group of the Year for the second time. dirtykitchenband.com

Josh Rouse & Grant Lee Phillips Thur, Oct. 18 • 7:30pm

Josh Rouse was born in Nebraska, and following an itinerant upbringing he eventually landed in Nashville where he recorded his debut Dressed Like Nebraska (1998). The album’s acclaim led to tours with Aimee Mann, Mark Etzel and the late Vic Chestnut. His release, The Embers of Time, was one of his strongest—described by Rouse as, “my surreal, ex-pat, therapy record.” Hear songs from these and his latest release Love in the Modern Age. www.joshrouse.com Grant-Lee Phillips’s gifts for reconciling classic touchstones with an adventurous sensibility has distinguished his work since he first emerged as the frontman of the acclaimed trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the early ‘90s. At once cinematic in scope and disarmingly intimate, the band’s music set the table for a varied, captivating solo career. Whether fronting a band or performing solo, he is a riveting live performer — which many discovered through his role as the town troubadour on the cult television hit The Gilmore Girls (both in its original run and the 2016 continuation). www.grantleephillips.com

Shawn Colvin Sat, Oct 20 • 7:30pm

Nationally recognized in 1998 for double Grammy Awards for her song “Sunny Came Home,” and its accompanying LP A Few Small Repairs, Shawn Colvin has received three Grammys in total, released eleven albums, written a critically acclaimed memoir, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures, and created a remarkable canon of work. shawncolvin.com

“With her wide range of musical talents, Colvin moves seamlessly from quietly emotional ballads to upbeat anthems.”

Bettye LaVette Fri, Oct 19 • 7:30pm

Bettye LaVette is an interpreter of the highest order. Her gift is being able to take a song, whether well-known or obscure, from any genre and make it completely her own. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, and Bruce Springsteen are just a few of the artists who have had their work re-imagined by Bettye. Now in her 55th year in show business, she has recorded an album of Bob Dylan songs, Things Have Changed—a masterpiece of interpretation of the songs of one of the greatest songwriters alive, by one of the greatest soul singers alive. Bettye will be performing the album in its entirety, along with other songs from throughout her career. www.bettyelavette.com

“Her enthralling live performances have always proven her impeccable ability to inhabit and interpret a song. Over the course of her last decade of albums, she’s covered iconic songs by Bob Seger, Lucinda Williams, Led Zeppelin and Dolly Parton, to name only a few, making each version distinctively hers.” —NPR

Dom Flemons

Thur, Oct 25 • 7:30pm

Black Cowboys is the new album from multiinstrumentalist, songster, and co-founding member of the Grammy-Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dom Flemons. More than a collection of songs from the Wild West, the record sheds light on the prominent but often overlooked role African American pioneers played in westward expansion. www.theamericansongster.com

An Evening with Hawktail Fri, Oct 26 • 7:30pm

Brittany Haas (fiddle), Paul Kowert (bass), and Jordan Tice (guitar) brought in mandolinist Dominick Leslie to round out the full-bodied sound of Hawktail and spun a naturally cohesive groove. With Unless, Hawktail has delivered an album of original instrumental music that showcases their unique talents. A mixture of recordings from the studio and from shows, this album was written to be played live for people in a room. The inclusiveness of that extends beyond the speakers: a finger on the string, a rush of energy when you didn’t expect it—this is music made to be enjoyed. www.hawktailmusic.com

Charlie Parr Sat, Oct 27 • 7:30pm

An easily confused and very shy individual, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin, Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well broke in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth, Minnesota. www.charlieparr.com

They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups, as well as with their father, jazz giant Dave Brubeck, and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet. They perform at concert series, colleges, and jazz festivals across North America and Europe. The Brubeck Brothers’ latest release, LifeTimes was a hit on the Jazz Week radio chart where it made the Top Ten list as one of the most played jazz recordings of the year. Although their style is rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music. The group’s creativity, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music, which reflects their dedication to melody, rhythm, culture and the spontaneous spirit of jazz. www.brubeckbrothers.com

Lee Ann Womack Wed, Nov 7 • 7:30pm

Artists don’t really make albums like Lee Ann Womack’s The Lonely, The Lonesome, and the Gone anymore. Albums that seem to exist separate and apart from any external pressures. Albums that possess both a profound sense of history and a clear-eyed vision for the future. Albums that transcend genres while embracing their roots. Albums that evoke a sense of place and of personality so vivid they make listeners feel more like participants in the songs than simply admirers of them. The Lonely, The Lonesome, and the Gone is her most personal album to date, marking the culmination of a journey that began with her 2005 CMA Album of the Year, There’s More Where That Came From, toward an authentic American music that celebrates her roots and adds to the canon. www.leeannwomack.com

Hal Ketchum

Fri, Nov 16 • 7:30pm

Five years ago, Hal Ketchum packed up his guitars and left Nashville, returning home to Texas after a successful, 20+ year career in country music. He was exhausted and battling multiple sclerosis, a condition that often left him partially paralyzed. What followed was a time of great reflection, a time for Ketchum to sit on his porch and document everything he saw, leading to the recording of I’m the Troubadour and the sound of an artist finding his own redemption in the strum of an acoustic guitar, the boom of a kick drum, and the trill of an upright piano. It’s an album inspired by years of struggle, performed by a songwriting legend who’s glad to finally get his groove back. www.halketchum.com

A life full of music. That’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age 21, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact. www.rickyskaggs.com

Scott Mulvahill

Fri, Nov 9 • 7:30pm As a teenager, Scott Mulvahill picked up the bass guitar on a whim, but found he had a natural proclivity and the drive to continue music studies through college while turning his attention to the upright bass. After touring with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder for five years, Mulvahill has shared the stage with some of the greatest artists of modern music. Currently, Mulvahill is touring in support of his September release, Top of the Stairs (EP). www.scottmulvahill.com

Words & Music by Dan Wilson Sat, Nov 17 • 7:30pm

“Words & Music by Dan Wilson” is an evening of songs and stories which pulls back the curtain on the art of songwriting. Between stripped-down renditions of some modern-day classics he has written on his own and with collaborators, his songwriting resume includes: “Closing Time” (which he wrote for his band, Semisonic), “Not Ready to Make Nice” (co-written with the Dixie Chicks) and “Someone Like You” (co-written with Adele). He earned a Grammy nomination for “Closing Time” (Best Rock Song) and won Grammys for Song of the Year (“Not Ready to Make Nice” in 2007) and Album of the Year (which he won in 2012 as one of the producers of Adele’s 21). Suzy Bogguss A Swingin’ Little Christmas Sat, Dec 1 • 7:30pm Suzy Bogguss is one of country music’s most pristine and evocative vocalists. With the release of the Illinois native’s 1989 major label debut, Somewhere Between, Suzy quickly became one of the key artists that defined those golden days of ’90s country. She scored a string of Top 10 singles with country radio staples like “Outbound Plane,” “Drive South,” “Hey Cinderella,” “Letting Go” and “Aces,” and her 1991 album of that name was certified platinum. In addition, she scored a trio of gold albums and notched more than 3 million sales. On her new album, Lucky, a collection of songs all written by Merle Haggard, Suzy Bogguss, the CMA, ACM and Grammy-Awardwinning singer, makes the country rebel’s compositions her own, reinterpreting classics like “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “Silver Wings” and “Today I Started Loving You Again” from a female point of view. suzybogguss.com

Through art and creation, Crystal was able to direct her energy and emotion, finding a way to mend a mind in turmoil. For her, music was always the most effective form of catharsis, and she would play for anyone, anywhere. In her own words, “My guitar was an appendage. I couldn’t live without it.” Crystal’s time on the ninth season of American Idol proved to be well spent, as she immediately left the the soundstage for the recording studio. Since her introduction to the world through television, Crystal has released two LP’s, two EPs, and several singles. www.crystalbowersox.com

The Red Shoes

Sat, Apr 27 • 1pm

An Evening with Leftover Salmon

Acoustic Living Room Tour Fri, April 26 • 7:30pm For the past quarter-century, Leftover Salmon has established itself as key to the Americana genre, digging deep into the well that supplies its influences: rock ‘n’ roll, folk, bluegrass, Cajun, soul, zydeco, jazz and blues. They are the direct descendants of bands like Little Feat, New Grass Revival, Grateful Dead and The Band, born of the heart and soul of America itself, playing music that reflects the sounds emanating from the Appalachian hills, the streets of New Orleans, the clubs of Chicago, the plains of Texas, and the mountains of Colorado. They’ve endured over all these years, earning their unequivocal stature as a truly legendary band. www.leftoversalmon.com

Laugh at the antics of the clowns, Mimm and Mumm, meet the mysterious Madame Pandora, come on a dancing tour of world cultures, and learn the price the heroine, Kaaren, must pay for wearing the beautiful red shoes in a musical production of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Red Shoes.” For over two decades, Playtime Productions Children’s Theatre has been delighting audiences with its creative and spirited renditions of classic tales. When performed by Playtime Productions, each of these endearing stories is retold with an eye to the present, always with a twist and many a surprise. www.playtimeproductions.org

:

“The boys of Leftover Salmon entered the bluegrass scene humbly, touring at local bars in mountain towns all over Colorado in a VW bus. Over 20 years later, Leftover Salmon dominates the contemporary bluegrass scene, with their self-proclaimed ‘polyethnic Cajun slamgrass’ circus that tours all over the country.” —JamBase

MadFiddle & Highway 151 Sun, Apr 28 • 4:00pm

With fiddles in hand, Madison’s premiere youth violin ensemble, MadFiddle, gears up for its annual Stoughton Opera House performance. Drawing on music extracted from Scandinavian folk, bluegrass, Celtic songs, Eastern and blues folk tunes, Appalachian, Brazilian, ragtime, as well as modern acoustic artists, MadFiddle brings students between the ages of six and seventeen together for a romping, stomping, good time. MadFiddle is directed by the Madison Area Music Association’s 2016 “Teacher of the Year,” Shauncey Ali, and accompanied by the energetic adult backing band, Highway 151 which consists of Chris Powers on mandolin and bouzouki, Pat Spaay on upright bass, and Bruce Anderson on guitar. Thriving on its mad enthusiasm for the instrument, MadFiddle shows up with that blast of inherent joy that comes along with playing music with friends. madfiddle.shutterfly.com

Hot Club of Cowtown Thur, May 2 • 7:30pm

Since 1998, the Western swing-gypsy jazz trio Hot Club of Cowtown has traveled the world bringing their own brand of magical musical chemistry to audiences far and wide. Along with Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Jake Erwin are equal partners in this original marriage of gypsy-jazz inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt — which accounts for the “Hot Club” portion of their name — with the hoedowns, traditional tunes, and Western swing-inspired music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, represented in the “Cowtown” of their name. They have created a legacy of the preservation of musical traditions that have often been overlooked by the mainstream and alternative music worlds. Even Americana and roots enthusiasts have only scratched surface of the multitude of musicians, past and present, who continue to inspire the Hot Club of Cowtown. www.hotclubofcowtown.com

“The hot jazz is what Hot Club do best, and this is a staggering return to form for the band I once said I could listen to forever. That still stands.” —Country Music People
