Reflections Please Note!

*

We’ve made it to the 2022-23 season and we couldn’t be happier. Through all the changes and challenges of the past few years, your affection for the Opera House has shone through. Going into the pandemic, none of us knew how deeply we would each be affected by the quiet that suddenly fell across our lives, but much in the way a tendril unfurls season by season, we found new ways to reach each other and grow community. By telephone, email, snail mail, and video call, we were overcome by your warmth. The understanding you extended when beloved artists were postponed; your efforts to sustain this historic treasure through months of closures; the encouragement in your words throughout; your staunch support as we relaunched uncertainly in the fall of 2021; and the overwhelming delight that came with reaching the $100,000 chair improvement goal initiated by the Stoughton Opera House Friends Association—each of these individual gestures lifted us and carried us through the difficult decisions and unexpected bumps that came with facing a crisis of this magnitude. Additionally, your determination reaffirmed what we have always known of you, the Opera House patrons, volunteers, artists, and Friends—that your kindness and enthusiasm can do great things, but all of those things are better with music. This season is for you! William Brehm, Director

Victoria Flynn, Box Office Manager

Julie McDougall, House Manager

Summer Season 2022 Sierra Ferrell*

Stoughton Chamber Music Festival

Wed. Aug. 24 • 7:30 pm

With her spellbinding voice and timebending sensibilities, Sierra Ferrell makes music that’s as fantastically vagabond as the artist herself. Growing up in smalltown West Virginia, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist left home in her early 20s to journey across the country with a troupe of nomadic musicians, playing everywhere from truck stops to alleyways to freight-train boxcars speeding down the railroad tracks. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle, she moved to Nashville and soon landed a deal with Rounder Records on the strength of her magnetic live show. Now, on her highly anticipated label debut Long Time Coming, Ferrell shares a dozen songs beautifully unbound by genre or era, instantly transporting her audience to an infinitely more enchanted world. www.sierraferrellmusic.com

RMAN BU

Sat. Aug. 27 • 7:30 pm

Through the performing of unexpected and contemporary works in tandem with breathtaking classics, the Stoughton Chamber Music Festival explores how classical music continues to evolve while shaping where it is headed. This season features ten exceptional musicians, two unique concert programs at the Stoughton Opera House & Chorus Public House, and an educational children’s story time with live music hosted by Stoughton storyteller Kay Elmsley Weeden.

INTERPLAY August 27th at the Stoughton Opera House

What music can be found at the intersection of freedom and refinement? For hundreds of years, the most brilliant artists have sought inspiration in the wild beauty of folk music. With INTERPLAY, the musicians of the Stoughton Chamber Music Festival explore these vibrant connections. Pairing the richly-hued poetry and folk-tinged virtuosity of Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet with raucous and vivacious arrangements of Hungarian folk music, INTERPLAY is a sumptuous feast for the senses. Staged in the beautiful acoustic environment of the Stoughton Opera House, INTERPLAY will close the 2022 Stoughton Chamber Music Festival. www.stoughtonchambermusicfestival.com

Stoughton Opera House: 2022 23 Season Your Seat is Waiting . . . Fall Season 2022 Kathy Mattea & Suzy Bogguss* Together at Last

Thur. Sept. 8 • 7:30 pm

Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss have each carved out careers in popular music with country chart hits spanning two decades. Suzy’s “Outbound Plane”, “Aces”, and “Someday Soon” are among the many songs beloved by country music fans around the world, as are “Where’ve You Been?”, “455 Rocket”, and “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” from Kathy’s deep well of material. Friends since their early days in Nashville, they had only found a few opportunities to collaborate musically, notably with “Teach Your Children”, their GRAMMY-nominated track from 1994’s “Red, Hot + Country” compilation. They have “threatened” for years, and their many fans have clamored for this pairing. Now, sporting new material developed for the tour, armed with 2 careers worth of stories and more hits than they can fit…Kathy & Suzy are Together At Last! www.mattea.com www.suzybogguss.com

David Bromberg Quintet Fri. Sept. 9 • 7:30 pm

With his 1971 self-titled Columbia Records release, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter David Bromberg emerged as a wunderkind of American music. The blend of traditional and original material, virtuosic musicianship and iconic cover art trumpeted the arrival of a new and audacious artist. With seven more albums and associations with Bob Dylan, Jerry Jeff Walker, George Harrison, the Grateful Dead and Bonnie Raitt, Bromberg’s reputation and following grew exponentially until the incessant demands of touring finally brought the recordings and shows to an end in the early 1980s. The twenty-two-year drought ended in 2006 with the release of the GRAMMY-nominated Try Me One More Time which kicked off a triumphant return with four more albums and musical partnerships with Linda Ronstadt, Vince Gill, Los Lobos, Dr John, Keb’ Mo, John Hiatt, Levon Helm and others. David’s band settled into its current lineup of Mark Cosgrove (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Nate Grower (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Josh Kanusky (drums, vocals) and newest member, Suavek Zaniesienko (bass, vocals). This nucleus has performed hundreds of shows together, traversing thousands of miles, across the US & Canada to Europe, Japan and Australia. The new album, Big Road, will give Bromberg fans the most intimate portrait to date of David and the band, musically and visually. Big Road returns the listener to the golden age of record making, when enjoying an album was a tactile, visual and auditory experience. Joining David’s core band are keyboardist extraordinaire Dan Walker on piano, organ and accordion, a stellar horn section of Bromberg regulars like Birch Johnson (trombone), Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet), Matt Koza (tenor sax) and Bob Stewart (tuba) with Larry Campbell on mandolin and pedal steel. www.davidbromberg.net

Suzanne Santo

Fri. Sept. 16 • 7:30 pm

Suzanne Santo has never been afraid to blur the lines. A tireless creator, she’s built her sound in the grey area between Americana, Southerngothic soul, and forward-thinking rock & roll. It’s a sound that nods to her past — a childhood spent in the Rust Belt; a decade logged as a member of the L.A.-based duo HoneyHoney; the acclaimed solo album, Ruby Red, that launched a new phase of her career in 2017; and the world tour that took her from Greece to Glastonbury as a member of Hozier’s band — while still exploring new territory. With Yard Sale, Santo boldly moves forward, staking her claim once again as an Americana innovator. It’s an album inspired by the past, written by an artist who’s only interested in the here-and-now. And for Suzanne Santo, the here-and-now sounds pretty good. www.suzannesanto.com

Looking for the perfect gift for

family or friends? Tickets to Opera House Events are always the right size and a night out at a great show is remembered forever. Our certificates never expire and can be used for any regular season event.

On November 12th, 2021, the acclaimed Hawai’i-born ‘ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro released Jake & Friends, his most creatively ambitious project to-date, featuring collaborations with a who’s who of music royalty, from Willie Nelson and Bette Midler to Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Loggins. In terms of size and scope and considering the sheer number of legendary stars who graciously loaned their inimitable talents to the project, Jake & Friends can only be compared to other benchmark duets albums by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, a shining testament to just how far the singularly gifted Jake has come. Over the past two decades, Jake has proved that there isn’t a style of music that he can’t play. While versatility for any musician is impressive, what’s remarkable about Jake’s transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary--whether it’s jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk or even classical--on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments: the ‘ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, Jake has taken the ‘ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process he’s reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore underappreciated fourstring instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ‘ukulele.” www.jakeshimabukuro.com

Give the gift they’ll never forget!

From Lincoln, Nebraska, Daniel did his graduate work at the UMKC Conservatory in Piano Performance and his undergraduate studies at Hastings College, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy. There, Philip discovered a passion for creating his own music. He was heavily inspired by contemporary classical composers such as Olafur Arnalds, NIls Frahm, Philip Glass, Max Richter and more by their ability to transmit powerful emotions thru simplistic, minimalistic sound while possessing their own unique “voice” in a non-cliche manner. He aims to follow in these musicians footsteps by blending aspects of classical music, minimalism, cinematic qualities, and more. He seeks to appeal to the seasoned, trained musician as well as the non-musically inclined listener in a way that can impact both. Philip has released 7 studio albums, several EP’s, and is an active collaborator. He has ventured into the film composing world and also has been active as a composer for dance, working with notable dance companies such as the Jacob Jonas dance company, Whim Whim, SALT Dance, Tristan Griffin Dance Company and more. His music has been streamed over 20 million times and has been featured in countless films worldwide. Daniel has now been moving away from composing with traditional sounds and experimenting with blending electronics with classical instrumentation, which can be heard on current projects and scores. His sole purpose as a composer is to create music that’s primary goal is to convey unequivocal emotion and to make people truly feel. Philip believes that music has a unique ability to cause change in the world by this personal connection to individual listeners and aims to be a small part in positively impacting his community through his art. www.philipdanielpiano.com

Tommy Malone of The Subdudes with special guest Liz Barnez Thur. Sept. 29 • 7:30 pm

Tommy Malone has had a musical love affair with fans for over 30 years. As the “heart and center” frontman of the legendary Americana act The Subdudes, he has carved a path through an ever-changing musical landscape as a gifted singer, player, and songwriter with a distinctive musical voice. OffBeat Magazine’s David Kunian notes, “It’s a crime that Tommy Malone isn’t better known around the world. He is a triple threat—beautiful singer, fine songwriter, and killer guitarist.” A musician’s musician, Tommy has recorded with Rosanne Cash, Keb Mo’, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, and Anders Osborne. His songs have been recorded by Joe Cocker, The Band Orleans, and many others. Still, it’s his ability to perform his own stories and turn them into vivid musical images that sets him apart from other performers. www.tommymalonemusic.net Liz Barnez was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and grew up inspired by jazz, blues, folk, gospel, R&B, Dixieland, funk, and parade music. She embraced the diversity of her musical and creative upbringing and transformed those into her own eclectic style of music. lizbarnezmusic.com

“There is so much more to being a musician but I have to tell you, playing live is a joy and a high like no other. When I’m playing a show and looking into the audience, I see & feel a connection that is difficult to describe.” –Tommy Malone

Riders in the Sky Thur. Oct. 6 • 7:30 pm

40 years ago. No laptops, no cellular phones, no Google, no downloads, no Skype, no Tweets, no Apple, no Microsoft, no texting, no electric cars, no Uber. A different world. But there were three young men with drive and wit who wanted to keep a special music alive. They believed in preserving the heritage of Western Music and presenting it to a new generation. They believed in entertaining, and they did so… entertaining themselves as well as the audience! And they believed in creating original Western Music to continue the tradition, not just seal it in amber as a museum piece. What they did not realize at the time was that they would be doing the same thing 40 years later. www.ridersinthesky.com

Pieta Brown & David Huckfelt: In Tandem

Fri. Oct. 7 • 7:30 pm Hailed as a “self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif” by the BBC, Pieta Brown first came to international prominence with the release of her self-titled debut in 2002. With a relentless energy and vision, over the course of ensuing years, she’s gone on to tour the US, Australia, and Europe extensively and release another eight critically lauded records, prompting NPR to applaud her “moody, ethereal” songwriting, and the New York Times to praise her “sweet, smoky voice.” Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana’s true gems, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting. With new musical experiments and collaborations in motion, Pieta’s music and artistry continue to expand and rise. www.pietabrown.com David Huckfelt is a singer / lyricist / activist and founding frontman of Minneapolis indie-folk cult favorite The Pines. His work with The Pines received record of the year accolades from Mojo & Q Magazine, and garnered praise for Huckfelt from David Fricke (Rolling Stone) as one of the finest songwriters of his generation. In a fifteenyear touring career, he has shared stages with artists from John Prine, Mavis Staples and Emmylou Harris to Bon Iver, Calexico and Trampled By Turtles. www.davidhuckfelt.com

Dar Williams Sat. Oct. 8 • 7:30 pm

Dar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. Williams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point, you just can’t. Like everyone else, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. She and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album, her 12th studio recording, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell, who produced the track and played guitars, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout these songs, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. www.darwilliams.com

Dar Williams: How to Write a Song that Matters—Songwriting Workshop

Ticket price includes Williams’s book What I Found in a Thousand Towns

Sun. Oct. 9 • 1:00 PM We are celebrating the release of How to Write a Song that Matters with afternoon songwriting workshops. Here’s how they’ll work: I will discuss the insights I gleaned from ten years of retreat leading and deconstruct one of my songs. During a break, we’ll pull names out of a hat for songs that you are working on (ideally where “the ink is still wet” and you’d like some helpful feedback). We’ll probably have time for five or six songs, plus some time to recap and talk about how to keep inspiring ourselves, our peers, and our communities, musical and otherwise. Workshop attendance is limited to 25 participants and is not included with other promotions. Please call the Box Office to sign up for this event. P.S.: You don’t have to submit a song if you’d just like to observe! www.darwilliams.com

“Hey baby, do you wanna take a trip with me? / I’ve got a feeling there might be a silver lining all around.” So begins One Day, the captivating new album from critically acclaimed Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the record explores the tension between optimism and despair that’s defined much of the past few years of American life, examining the power (or naïveté, depending on your perspective) of positive thinking in the face of chaos and uncertainty. The songs here are tender and timeless, with straightforward arrangements centered around brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum’s air tight harmonies, and the performances are warm and intimate to match, delivered with a soulful, ’70s-inspired palette of playful Wurlitzer, breezy guitars, and muscular percussion. The Cactus Blossoms broke out nationally in 2016 with their JD McPherson-produced debut, You’re Dreaming. Dates with Kacey Musgraves, Jenny Lewis, and Lucius followed, as did raves from the New York Times and NPR, who praised “the brothers’ extraordinary singing.” The band was further catapulted into the spotlight in 2018, when David Lynch tapped them to perform in the return of Twin Peaks, and continued to build on their success with their 2019 sophomore LP, Easy Way, which led Rolling Stone to laud the duo’s “rock-solid, freak of genetics harmonies.” www.thecactusblossoms.com

BoDeans

Fri. Oct. 14 • 7:30 pm With countless tunes you know from the first note, riproaring gigs you can count on, and a whole lot of energy you’ll take home with you, BoDeans continue to contribute to the American songbook as a tried-and-true institution. Founded and led by original frontman, songwriter, multiinstrumentalist, and producer Kurt Neumann, the band’s catalog consists of generational anthems such as “Good Things,” You Don’t Get Much,” “Idaho,” and “Closer To Free,” just to name a few. However, they still reflect the soul and spirit of the modern American experience on their fourteenth full-length offering, 4 The Last Time. “The music of BoDeans has defined much of my life,” muses Kurt. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to do what I enjoy. I wanted to creatively do something positive for the world instead of just taking from it. So, this is what I’ve chosen to do with my life. The music was always about the blue-collar dream of a better life, and it still is.” www.bodeans.com

Crossing borders, jumping barriers, taking risks, betting it all: that’s the path Alejandro Escovedo has been taking in his lifelong search for the heart of rock and roll. The epic 17 song suite comprising The Crossing is about that journey: searching, but not necessarily finding, eyes and ears open all the way. Ranging from sweeping orchestral numbers to classic rock to bursts of 70s punk, the collection finds Escovedo delving further into his lifelong musical journey across his most sonically diverse work yet. “This says more about me than any of my records without it being a record about me,” Alejandro Escovedo, The Crossing. www.alejandroescovedo.com

The Weight Band featuring members of The Band and the Levon Helm Band Fri. Oct. 21 • 7:30 pm

Performing original songs as well as classics of The Band, The Weight Band is led by Jim Weider, a 15-year former member of The Band and the Levon Helm Band. The Weight Band originated in 2013 inside the famed Woodstock barn of Levon Helm. Weider was inspired by Helm to carry on the musical legacy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group. On their new album, Shines Like Gold, The Weight Band presents a dynamic set of classic Americana that draws upon roadhouse rock, funky swamp pop, blues, country soul and folk music. Composed of band leader, renowned guitarist Jim Weider (The Band, Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band, Jim Weider Band), keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band), bassist Albert Rogers (Jim Weider Band, Jimmy Vivino), drummer Michael Bram (Jason Mraz) and keyboardist Matt Zeiner (Dickey Betts), the veteran quintet shares a deep appreciation and knowledge for this music, which Weider describes as the “Woodstock Sound.” The Weight Band continues to serve as its torchbearer, with Shines Like Gold representing a sublime example of these masterful roots musicians at work. www.theweightband.com

Sean Hayes Fri. Oct. 28 • 7:30 pm

The Lone Bellow Sat. Oct. 22 • 7:30 pm

The stories behind the songs matter––but they aren’t what matters most. In the end, The Lone Bellow’s music needs no explanation. Just listening offers a salve and a shelter. “In my own perfect little world, I would be able to put the music out and not talk about it––just, Here. Bye. See you next time,” Zach says, then laughs softly. “I do hope someone will find this music in a peaceful moment, when they can turn it on and get lost in the story and the sound.” Half Moon Light is an artistic triumph worked toward for years, earned not by individual posturing, but by collective determination and natural growth. With earthy three-part harmonies and songwriting as provocative as it is honest, the trio made up of guitarist Brian Elmquist, lead vocalist Zach Williams, and multi-instrumentalist Kanene Donehey Pipkin creates sparks that make a stranger’s life matter or bring our sense of childlike wonder roaring back. On Half Moon Light, The Lone Bellow mix light and dark to muster a complex ode to memory, a call for hope, and an exercise in empathy. Anchored in the acoustic storytelling that first so endeared the band to fans and critics, Half Moon Light also takes more chances, experimenting with textures and instrumental fillips to create a full-bodied music experience. The result is The Lone Bellow’s most sophisticated work to date. www.thelonebellow.com

Sean Hayes is a Bay Area singer-songwriter who makes music to dance to or cry to, or maybe both at the same time. He was born in New York City, raised in North Carolina, and honed his earliest musical chops in a band playing Irish and old-time tunes — but his unique style of deeply felt, R&B-inflected folk really matured during his two decades singing and playing in cafes, bars, and night clubs of San Francisco. His voice layers wonder and heartache upon grit and gravel, sex and soul. His lyrics carry an unpretentious wisdom. He’s dueted with Aimee Mann; been covered by the Be Good Tanyas; and toured with Anais Mitchell (performing songs from Hadestown, before it was an award-winning Broadway show). His songs have appeared on NPR, NBC and HBO. Be Like Water, released in Nov. 2021, is Hayes’ ninth full-length, and his first record in five years — a time period in which, after nearly 20 years in San Francisco, Hayes moved north with his family to Sonoma County. The resulting songs are warm and enveloping, bluesy and lived-in, and have the feel of someone stretching out their legs on a back porch, perhaps a little unused to having the space to do so. www.seanhayesmusic.com

Sonny Landreth & Cindy Cashdollar Sat. Nov 5 • 7:30 pm

Sonny Landreth and Cindy Cashdollar are making some rare duo appearances in 2022. Louisiana’s slide guitar wizard will deliver his bottle-neck style slide chops while Austin’s sweetheart of the steel guitar will showcase the renowned talent that earned her a spot in the Texas Music Hall of Fame. Revered for his unique slide guitar technique, Sonny Landreth has collaborated with many legendary performers including John Hiatt, Jimmy Buffett, Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton. Summer of 2013, Sonny was part of the Peter Frampton led Guitar Circus tour, often closing the night playing with Frampton on an extended “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Cindy Cashdollar’s expertise is in great demand on both steel guitar and dobro. She has worked with many leading artists in various genres including Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart and Ryan Adams. With the iconic western swing group Asleep At The Wheel, she garnered 5 GRAMMY awards and was the first woman to be inducted into the Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 2011. Performing a mix of original songs with contemporary and traditional blues and roots music, the show is electric, virtuosic, and tastefully delivered by these two great instrumental masters. www.sonnylandreth.com www.cindycashdollar.com

Squirrel Nut Zippers Thur. Nov. 10 • 7:30 pm

The musical journey of the Squirrel Nut Zippers began in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990’s, as a musician’s escape from the cookie-cutter world of modern rock radio. Jimbo Mathus, along with drummer/percussionist Chris Phillips, formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the area. It wasn’t long before the band’s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of the region and attracted a national audience. Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon released in 2020 is a combination of newly written Zippers material, along with a few songs from past times like “Animule Ball” which was originally recorded in 1938 by Jelly Roll Morton. In keeping with that time period, the band turned to their longtime friends at Fleischer Studios (home of Betty Boop) to use some of their historic animations for a video for the track. The Squirrel Nut Zippers continue to confound audiences with their hybrid stew of Southern roots music, New Orleans Jazz, Vaudeville, Blues and a healthy touch irreverence. Not traditionalists – true originals. www.snzippers.com

DeVotchKa* Fri. Nov. 11 • 7:30 pm

A cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, norteño, punk, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa, formed in Denver by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass) and percussionist Shawn King, emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s infusing modern indie music with a global flavor. They found widespread success in 2006 with their GRAMMY-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with revered indie, Anti-, the band delivered A Mad And Faithful Telling in early 2008, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. A lengthy world tour followed, including stops at major festivals like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Bumbershoot. After doing more soundtrack work, this time for the 2009 comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, the group returned to the studio for 2011’s moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. Embarking on another world tour, they collaborated with the Colorado Symphony on the 2012 concert album Live with the Colorado Symphony. Over the next several years, Urata became increasingly involved in his own film composition career, scoring movies like Crazy Stupid Love, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Paddington, and the Netflix series “A Series of Unfortunate Events”. Meanwhile, the band regrouped for a lengthy recording session, eventually returning in 2018 with their sixth album, This Night Falls Forever, this time via Concord Records. www.devotchka.net Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Fellow Pynins Thur. Dec. 1 • 7:30 pm

Fellow Pynins is a Portland, Oregon based award winning contemporary folk duo with a keen and bucolic sense of vocal harmony and song craft anchored in the balladry tradition. The duo consists of Dani Aubert (claw-hammer banjo, bouzouki) and solo artist Ian George (guitar, mandolin). They are songwriters, collectors, and interpreters. Since 2016 the duo has toured the US incessantly and has gathered significant traction in the UK/Ireland, gracing festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, Wilderness Festival, Omagh Bluegrass Festival, and selling out legs of their most recent UK/Ireland tour. In 2019 they were named by NPR’s Bob Boilen as one of the best Tiny Desk submissions and the same year won the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time duet competition. In 2020/2021 the duo relocated from Minneapolis, MN back to Oregon to build (learning every step of the way) two tiny houses on wheels for their family, which they now live in. On May 20, 2022 Fellow Pynins will release their sophomore album Lady Mondegreen while officially showcasing at the 2022 Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas City. Lady Mondegreen, recorded live over 10 days in December 2021 at their off-grid tiny house dwelling in the mountains of Oregon, is an ode to their love and reverence for traditional music. All songs on the album were learned person-to-person from various individuals they met whilst traveling with their two children over a 10 month song collecting trip through Europe/UK/Ireland in their transformed camper van “Big Blue.” The album showcases their “strong vocal harmonies” (Smithsonian Folkways), instrumental prowess, and adventurous arrangements quintessential to the Fellow Pynins rustic sound. There is additional instrumentation on the album from players from Ireland, London, NYC, Boston, and Minneapolis. www.fellowpynins.com

Susan Werner

Sat. Dec. 3 • 7:30 pm

For Your Special Celebrations

After writing twelve albums of songs in styles ranging from folk/rock to Tin Pan Alley to gospel, country and chamber music, what might a woman deemed by National Public Radio as “The Empress of the Unexpected” try next? As audiences will testify, Werner’s been knocking it out of the park – or concert hall – all around the U.S. for twenty years. Renowned as a charismatic performer, she’s known above all for challenging herself to conquer new styles, almost like mountaintops, every few years. From her 1995 major label debut, the folk/rock gem Last Of The Good Straight Girls, to her 2004 collection of Tin Pan Alley styled originals I Can’t Be New, to her 2007 “agnostic gospel” hymnal The Gospel Truth, to 2013’s tribute to agriculture and her Iowa farm roots Hayseed to 2018’s Cuban flavored collection An American In Havana, Werner’s creative restlessness has become her defining characteristic. www.susanwerner.com

The New Standards Fri. Dec. 9 • 7:30 pm

The New Standards is a “revelatory” (Star Tribune) Twin-Cities-based trio with a global following. Formed in 2005 as an off-shoot project between three Minneapolis-based musicians and friends, The New Standards has grown into a globe-spanning adventure—filling theaters and clubs around the world and spawning several CDs, videos, cartoons, and dance and theater projects that have charmed and delighted an ever-multiplying legion of faithful fans. The three core members of The New Standards all come from illustrious Twin Cities bands. Chan Poling founded the seminal Punk/New Wave band The Suburbs. John Munson was an original member of Trip Shakespeare and the chart-topping Semisonic. Steve Roehm started on drums in the Texas punk outfit Billygoat and the avant-jazz Electropolis. Sensing a lack of interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards,” they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs—from every era, particularly post 1960’s pop music—in a stripped-down acoustic setting, making room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz, and yet never fully abandoning the modest soul of pop and rock. www.thenewstandards.com

A conversation with music, from songwriter to songwriter, trading songs and stories, an amazing night of music to be shared with friends… Come join us for this special, rare concert as four of Wisconsin’s finest songsmiths join forces for an intimate evening of original acoustic music. Extraordinary guitarist and singer/songwriter Willy Porter has been turning first time listeners into die-hard fans for more than two decades now with his signature, finger-picking guitar work and playful performing style. Porter is a major force in the worlds of Americana and contemporary folk and folk-rock music. A live-wire on any stage, Peter Mulvey is an acoustic singer/songwriter/guitarist who, in fact, defies this categorization. His ferocious guitar playing whisks him through more tunings than he has fingers in the course of an evening, as he winds his way from full-throated rockers to deceptively plain-spoken musings. Bill Camplin has been an integral part of the Wisconsin acoustic music scene for many years both as a performer and as co-owner of the legendary Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson. Bill is a strong guitarist with a beautiful tenor voice and he is noted for penetrating, intensely emotional performances of both his original songs and his interpretations of others such as Bob Dylan. Dubbed “the past, present and future of jazz violin” by NPR’s Jazz Profiles, Randy Sabien is a regular at Big Top Chautauqua and has performed on A Prairie Home Companion and Austin City Limits. His instrumental skill on the violin, guitar, mandolin, and piano, in the genres of jazz, country, and rock, is legendary.

Stoughton Opera House: Spring 2023 Spring Season 2023

Keller Williams Fri. Feb. 10 • 7:30 pm

Virginian, Keller Williams, released his first album in 1994, Freek, and has since given each of his albums a single syllable title: Buzz, Spun, Breathe, Loop, Laugh, Home, Dance, Stage, Grass, Dream, Twelve, Live, Odd, Thief, Kids, Bass, Pick, Funk, Vape, Sync, Raw, Sans, Add, Speed and Cell. Each title serves as a concise summation of the concept guiding each project. Keller’s albums reflect his pursuit to create music that sounds like nothing else. Un-beholden to conventionalism, he seamlessly crosses genre boundaries. The end product is music that encompasses rock, jazz, funk and bluegrass, and always keeps the audience on their feet. Keller built his reputation initially on his engaging live performances, no two of which are ever alike. For most of his career he has performed solo. His stage shows are rooted around Keller singing his compositions and choice cover songs, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, bass, guitar synthesizer and drum samples; a technique called live phrase sampling or “looping.” The end result often leans toward a hybrid of alternative folk and groovy electronica, a genre Keller jokingly calls “acoustic dance music” or ADM.” Keller’s constant evolution has led to numerous band projects as well; Keller & The Keels, Grateful Grass, KWahtro, Keller and the Travelin’ McCourys, Grateful Gospel and More Than A Little to name a few. Keller can be found playing clubs and festivals around the U.S. with these projects throughout the year. www.kellerwilliams.net

Buffalo Nichols Fri. Feb. 17 • 7:30 pm

Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Buffalo Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. “Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues,” guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols explains. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album—Fat Possum’s first solo blues signing in nearly 20 years—composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas. While acknowledging the joy, exuberance and triumph contained in the blues, Nichols looks intently at the genre’s origins, which harken back to complicated and dire circumstances for Black Americans. With this in mind, Nichols says there is a missing link, which he’s often used as a compass: Black stories aren’t being told responsibly in the genre anymore. To begin changing that, Buffalo Nichols gets the chance to tell his own story in the right way. www.buffalo-nichols.com

Fireside Collective

Fri. Feb. 24 • 7:30 pm Quickly blazing a name for themselves with their progressive approach to American folk music, Fireside Collective delights listeners with memorable melodies and contemporary songwriting. Formed in the mountain city of Asheville North Carolina, the band plays original songs on stringed instruments, intended for a modern audience. Following the release of their debut album Shadows and Dreams, the band hit the road seeking to engage audiences with their energetic live show built on instrumental proficiency, colorful harmonies, and innovative musical arrangements. Well what do you call it? “Bluegrass, Newgrass, perhaps Progressive folk…” These are some descriptions mandolinist and songwriter Jesse Iaquinto chooses to identify with. “Depending on where you come from and your experience with folk music, you may think we’re very traditional, or on the other hand, consider us a progressive act. We appreciate both ends of the spectrum and may lie on a different end on any given night.” While roots music lies at the core of the Collective’s songs, a willingness to explore the boundaries and present relevant new material remains fundamental. www.firesidecollectiveband.com

William Elliott Whitmore Thurs. Mar. 2 • 7:30 pm

A man armed only with a banjo and a bass drum can be a formidable force, especially if his name is William Elliott Whitmore. With his powerful voice and honest approach, Whitmore comes from the land, growing up on a family farm in Lee County, Iowa. Still living on the same farm today, Whitmore has truly taken the time to discover where his center lies, and from that he will not be moved. Whitmore has consistently carved his own path, honoring the longstanding tradition of folk music throughout his nearly 20-year career, while always allowing his blues, soul, and punk rock influences to shine through. Getting his first break opening for his friend’s hardcore band with just a banjo in hand, he would discover bands like The Jesus Lizard, Bad Brains, Lungfish, and Minutemen and soon learn to play his own brand of rural, roots music with that same DIY ethic. William Elliott Whitmore has been back and forth across the United States and to cities around the world. He’s toured with such diverse acts as Frank Turner, Trampled By Turtles, Clutch, and Chris Cornell, to name a few. He’s appeared on some of the biggest stages around the world including Stagecoach Fest, Byron Bluesfest (Australia) and End of the Road Fest (UK). His willingness to take his show to any playing field has proved invaluable as he turned strangers to diehards with every performance. www.williamelliottwhitmore.com

The Steel Wheels Fri. Mar. 3 • 7:30 pm

The Steel Wheels have responded to this time of isolation and loss by seeking to connect with their audience in new ways. In 2020, unable to perform their rootsy brand of Americana for crowds in live settings, the musicians turned their creative powers to crafting songs for individuals. Produced in isolation in the band’s home studios, the Everyone A Song albums are part of an ongoing project to collect the personal experiences of fans and forge them into that most enduring, yet ephemeral, format we call “song.” An accompanying podcast, We Made You A Song, explores the stories behind these songs, and the songwriting process itself. While each song was commissioned to honor a specific relationship or event—a birth, a wedding, a memory of home—the emotions evoked are universal. Whether at a joyous summer festival, in their many shows across the country and beyond, or in the studio, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks, telling stories, and joining communities through song. www.thesteelwheels.com

Davina & the Vagabonds Sat. Mar. 4 • 7:30 pm

Davina & the Vagabonds’ shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Sowers is a true original. Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. This has set the Vagabonds apart at festivals in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Sighișoara, Romania; Sierre, Switzerland; Kemi, Finland; the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival (was asked back to play their main stage in 2014), Vache de Blues in France, and North Sea Jazz Festival. Catch this one-of-a-kind live show while they are in town! www.davinaandthevagabonds.com

Charlie Parr Thur. Mar. 23 • 7:30 pm

Charlie Parr is an incorruptible outsider who writes novelistic, multi-layered stories that shine a kaleidoscopic light on defiant, unseen characters thriving in the shadows all around us. Parr has a new record with only his name on it, and it isn’t shiny and perfect and commercial and catchy. It’s him. It’s pure Charlie Parr and that’s enough. He hasn’t moved to LA or Nashville; he’s stayed in the cold grey north of Minnesota, because that’s his home. www.charlieparr.com

Tuba Skinny Sat. Mar. 11 • 7:30 pm

For over a decade Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. They’ve attracted a wide variety of fans- young and old, neophytes and niche-enthusiastswith the strength of their musicianship and the scope of their jazz and American roots music catalog. While they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music, spirituals, country blues, string band music, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music from an early 20th century perspective. Despite a general lack of interest in social media and a limited release of their music online, they’ve amassed an enthusiastic digital following. After a decade of playing (mostly) other artist’s songs, Tuba Skinny decided to fulfill a long-time dream with the release of Magnolia Strolltheir first album of all-original tunes. Featuring compositions from Erika, Shaye, Robin, Barnabus, Craig, and Max, it is their love song to all the musicians, living and dead, who have inspired them, as well as to the neighborhoods of New Orleans that have nurtured them. www.tubaskinny.com

Dead Horses Fri. Mar. 24 • 7:30 pm

A bustling boulevard in the heart of Milwaukee provides a colorful backdrop for the latest album by folk duo Dead Horses. Brady Street, which is due out on August 12, 2022, is Dead Horses’ first full-length release since their arresting 2018 record, My Mother the Moon. The last album charted on the Americana Top 50 radio charts for three consecutive months. The single “Turntable” accrued more than 35 million spins on Spotify and was also featured on the Amazon and Apple Americana playlists. The pair’s select media highlights include a Rolling Stone “Artist You Should Know” mention as well as profiles in Billboard, Noisey, and even independent global news publication Democracy Now! Since the band’s early days, Dead Horses has been something of a fluid project centered around Sarah and Dan but has also welcomed other like minded musicians for recording and touring. The band’s seemingly dark name is a loving tribute to a former friend of the band who passed away due to struggles with opioid abuse. To this end, Vos says, “Our music is about hope and joy, all while sharing an important message that you’re never alone in your battles.” www.deadhorses.net

Tommy Castro Sat. Mar. 25 • 7:30 pm

“The hardest thing to do,” says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro, “is be yourself, take some chances and bring your fans along with you.” Throughout his long, constantly evolving career, guitarist, singer and songwriter Tommy Castro has always remained true to himself while exploring, growing and creating new music, and he has taken his thousands of devoted fans right along with him. Since his solo debut in 1994, he’s made 16 albums— the last seven for Alligator—each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery, strippeddown rock ‘n’ roll, each release is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation—a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Blues Revue declared, “Tommy Castro can do no wrong.” For Castro’s new album, a roots music odyssey entitled Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town, he tells a timeless story. This special project was composed by Castro along with GRAMMY Award winning producer Tom Hambridge. Through its 13 songs, A Bluesman Came To Town tells the tale of a young man working on his family farm who gets bitten by the blues bug. He masters the guitar and heads out on the road seeking fame and fortune, only to find what he’s left behind is the treasure he’s been looking for. www.tommycastro.com

Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were eleven and twelve years old, and they began their professional career in 1979. Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, the Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) – the Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. www.krugerbrothers.com

Aoife O’Donovan

plays Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska in its entirety Wed. Apr. 12 • 7:30 pm

Aoife O’Donovan will perform Bruce Springsteen’s album Nebraska solo in its entirety. The New York Times described Aoife’s 2020 performance of the album as “saluting Springsteen’s songcraft with clear, pitch-perfect articulation and affable delivery.” The live album is available digitally only via Aoife’s Bandcamp. There will be only 9 shows performed in the US so don’t miss your chance to catch this rare night of music. GRAMMY award-winning artist Aoife O’Donovan operates in a thrilling musical world beyond genre. Deemed “a vocalist of unerring instinct” by the New York Times, she has released three critically-acclaimed and boundary-blurring solo albums including her most recent record, 2022’s boldly orchestrated and literally crafted Age of Apathy. Recorded and written over the course of Winter and Spring 2021 with acclaimed producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Rhiannon Giddens), Age of Apathy is “stunning” (Rolling Stone) and “taps into the propulsion of prime Joni Mitchell” (Pitchfork). A savvy and generous collaborator, Aoife is one third of the group I’m With Her with bandmates Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz. The trio’s debut album See You Around was hailed as “willfully open-hearted” by NPR Music. I’m With Her earned an Americana Music Association Award in 2019 for Duo/Group of the Year, and a GRAMMY-award in 2020 for Best American Roots Song. O’Donovan spent the preceding decade as co-founder and front woman of the string band, Crooked Still and is the featured vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions - the group with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile. She has appeared as a featured vocalist with over a dozen symphonies including the National Symphony Orchestra, written for Alison Krauss, performed with jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas, and spent a decade as a regular contributor to the radio variety shows “Live From Here” and “A Prairie Home Companion.” www.aoifeodonovan.com

Asleep at the Wheel Thur. & Fri. Apr. 13 & 14 • 7:30 pm

The stars aligned in 1970 when three friends Ray Benson, Lucky Oceans, and Leroy Preston moved to Paw Paw, West Virginia (it’s not a made-up place, you can look it up). It was there that their dream of forming a band began after a mutual friend gave them access to his uncle’s cabin on an apple orchard just outside of town. The three friends began to—quite literally—woodshed and found others who would join them in their mission to play old-style roots/Americana music. This was long before the genre even had a name. After a trip to the outhouse, Lucky lived up to his name and suggested the band be called Asleep at the Wheel and so it was to be for the next 50 years. Since inception, Asleep at the Wheel received 10 GRAMMY® Awards, was cited by the Country Music Association as 1976 Touring Band of the Year and were given the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association. They have released 31 albums and charted more than 20 singles on the country charts. Billboard commented on the band’s catalog most succinctly: “Everything this act has ever released is simply spectacular.” Most recently, Asleep at the Wheel has been in the studio working on a new record to be released in early 2021. Asleep at the Wheel have demonstrated convincingly that they are more relevant, enjoyable, and musically nimble than at any time in the band’s 50-year history. The 6’7” Ray Benson has been the one constant in Asleep At the Wheel since 1970. He notes, “I’ve been told that I’m relentless, so I guess I am… I’m just doing what I believe I’m meant to do—I’m singing and playing and writing better than I ever have. My role and concept of leading a band has never changed. It’s gathering the best musicians I can find or convince to play to the best of their ability, and I just try to make the best decisions possible and kick some ass every night onstage. I’ve made it this far and don’t feel like I or the band will be slowing down anytime soon.” www.asleepatthewheel.com

Chris Smither & Paul Cebar

Sat. Apr. 15 • 7:30 pm

Fans from around the world continue to fill concert venue after concert venue eager for the galvanizing ride of a Chris Smither concert. Reviewers including the Associated Press, NPR, MOJO, and The New York Times agree that Chris remains a significant songwriter and an electrifying guitarist as he draws deeply from folk and blues, modern poets and philosophers. More from the Levee continues to showcase Chris Smither’s extraordinary effect; that strength compounds strength, leaving the listener feeling touched by grace, or an almost otherworldly wisdom. www.smither.com

Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound bring forth a funky, lyrically charged racket that is explosive, yet intimate. Taking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest,), the streets (and 45’s) of New Orleans, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul, funk & blues of his youth, Paul Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture. His time spent in his second home of New Orleans, as a musicologist in Florida, and as a journeyman wanderer in Cuba, is reflected in his musical worldview. At the core is gifted songwriting, and the company Paul keeps bears it out. Bonnie Raitt, Nick Lowe, Chris Smither, John Hiatt and Cesar Rosas are among his friends and admirers. www.paulcebar.com

Loudon Wainwright III Thur. Apr. 20 • 7:30 pm

For the past fifty-two years, Loudon Wainwright III has carved out a distinguished career as one of our most original singersongwriters, a six-string diarist with material that is by turns, tongue-in-cheek, tender, sarcastic, heart-wrenching, and always deeply personal. Along the way, he’s released over twenty albums, won a GRAMMY, acted in film and TV, and had his songs recorded by artists including Johnny Cash, Mose Allison, Bonnie Raitt, and his own son, Rufus Wainwright. In October of 2020, Loudon unveiled the album I’d Rather Lead A Band in which he is featured as a vocalist with Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks. The 14 -song collection of classic songs from the 1920s and ‘30s was widely acclaimed. During the pandemic, Wainwright has produced a number of virtual shows, including “The Special Relationship” (presented by the Royal Albert Hall) and “The Great Unknown”, his musical tribute to his friend the late George Gerdes. Also featured in that show were Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, and the members of Spinal Tap. In 2015 Loudon Wainwright received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in Cardiff. www.lw3.com

Taylor Ashton Sat. Apr. 22 • 7:30 pm

Taylor Ashton is a Canadian singer and songwriter living in Brooklyn. He spent the first half of his twenties on the road across Canada as frontman of the band Fish & Bird before moving to New York to work on a new set of songs and a new chapter of life. His music takes influence from the cosmic emotionality of Joni Mitchell, the sage vulnerability of Bill Withers, the humor and heartbreak of Randy Newman, and old-time and Celtic folk music. Alternately accompanying himself on clawhammer banjo and electric guitar, Taylor croons poignantly clever lyrical insights while effortlessly gliding between a Bill Callahan-esque baritone to a Thom Yorke-like falsetto. His full-length debut album The Romantic was released in early 2020, followed by a companion Ep Romanticize featuring remixes, reimaginings, and new songs. His songwriting appears on albums by Watkins Family Hour, the Brother Brothers, Benjamin Lazar Davis and others, and he has released singles with Aoife O’Donovan, The Fretless, and Aerialists, as well as a moody acoustic duo record in 2018 with songwriter & guitarist Courtney Hartman. Much is in store for 2022, including at least one new album and more fruitful collaborations. www.taylorashton.com

MadFiddle is directed by the Madison Area Music Association’s 2016 “Teacher of the Year,” Shauncey Ali, and accompanied by the energetic adult backing band, Highway 151 which consists of Chris Powers on mandolin and bouzouki, Pat Spaay on upright bass, and Bruce Anderson on guitar. Thriving on its mad enthusiasm for the instrument, MadFiddle shows up with that blast of inherent joy that comes along with playing music with friends. www.Madfiddle.shutterfly.com

Since forming nearly 50 years ago, The Seldom Scene has brought both freewheeling joy and immaculate musicianship to their inventive take on bluegrass, offering up spirited interpretations of songs from limitless genres. On their new album Changes, the band sharpens their focus to a highly specific body of work: songs first recorded in the 1960s and very early ’70s, rooted in the archetypal storytelling of classic singer-songwriters. And in taking on the music of iconic artists like Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt, The Seldom Scene perform a sort of subtle magic: transforming the most stripped-bare songs into harmony-rich and elaborately arranged compositions, while wholly sustaining the charmed simplicity of each piece. www.seldomscene.com

Humbird

Fri. Apr. 28 • 7:30 pm Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves bread crumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars. Humbird’s debut album Pharmakon (Aug. 2019) is a “...an absolutely hypnotic listening experience” according to Folk Alley. Atwood Magazine describes it as music wrapped in “gentle rebellion”. www.humbirdmusic.com

Over the Rhine Sat. Apr. 29 • 7:30 pm

When you listen to Over the Rhine, the supremely talented musical couple comprised of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice, “Which has the power to stop the world in its tracks,” (Performing Songwriter). But then the songs start hitting you. Paste magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary,” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. Rolling Stone recently wrote, Over the Rhine is a band, “With no sign of fatigue, whose moment has finally arrived.” That’s quite a sentiment for a band celebrating 30 years of writing, recording, and life on the road. But as Karin Bergquist states, “There is still so much music left to be made.” Love & Revelation, the new album from Over the Rhine, is a record for right now. The songs have been rigorously road tested and burst at the seams with loss, lament, and resilient hope. The LA Times writes, “The Ohio based husband and wife duo has long been making soul-nourishing music, and the richness only deepens.” www.overtherhine.com

Darrell Scott

Thurs. May 11 • 7:30 pm

Sway Wild

Sat. May 6 • 7:30 pm The name Sway Wild evokes a specific feeling. From the beginning, Mandy Fer, Dave McGraw, and Thom Lord intended this band, and their selftitled debut, to reflect what the endeavor felt like to them: a pathway to the uninhibited, unfiltered core that we all possess. The words themselves are an invitation, if not a command, to seek out this untainted part of ourselves. In many ways, Sway Wild’s music is the product of truly wild places, and, like ribbons of light piercing a dark green canopy overhead; it can help us find the wildness that is unquestionably still within us. www.swaywild.com

Multi-Instrumentalist and Singer-Songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant, and candidly honest, lilting, blooming, and resonating. The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world, what is at stake here, and our place in it. And ultimately, Darrell knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters, that we don’t always get it right, but that’s the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things, why we forever chase it, and why it is held sacred. Darrell Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of 4, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University, along with playing his way through life. This would never change. After recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band (2 years with each), and producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark and being named “songwriter of the year” for both ASCAP and NSAI, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property and playing music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories, and is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life. www.darrellscott.com

Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society Iris DeMent Sat. May 13 • 7:30 pm

Iris DeMent is an acclaimed singer/songwriter whose 1992 debut Infamous Angel was hailed by Rolling Stone as “an essential album of the 90’s”. Combining elements of folk, gospel and country, her rich lyrical landscapes and captivating music have earned two GRAMMY nominations and the respect of many of her peers such as John Prine, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. NPR has called her “one of the great voices in contemporary popular music” and The Boston Globe heralded her 2012 album Sing The Delta to be a “work of rare, unvarnished grace and power…” In 2017, The Americana Music Association honored Iris with their Trailblazer Award, recognizing a singular artist who forged her own uncompromising path.

Date TBA

Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society is now in its twenty-second season of bringing chamber music with a bang to enthusiastic audiences in Madison and south-central Wisconsin. Since 1992 flutist Stephanie Jutt and pianist Jeffrey Sykes have been inviting other world-class musicians to join them in a three-week summer festival that puts the element of “play” back into chamber music, showing that chamber music concerts, often serious to the point of stuffiness, can be both serious and fun at the same time. www.bachdancing.org
