Reflections More than a century of songs and stories remain vibrant and alive within the Opera House. We are truly indebted to those who came before us for their foresight in preserving this treasuretrove of dreams. We are privileged to have the opportunity to gather in the Opera House with friends from near and far and share in so many wonderful moments. Each season we search for an interesting mix of performers to entertain and enlighten our audiences. We know that you and the performers find that the warmth and excellent acoustics of the Opera House are just part of the reason so many of you return year after year. We also thank our sponsors, volunteers and all the Friends of the Opera House. Without the support of our many friends, the continued health and success of the theater would simply not be possible. As Bob Dylan wrote, “I’ll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours.” See you at the show! William Brehm, Christina Dollhausen, Director Event Coordinator

Stoughton Opera House: 2013 2014 Season Your Seat is Waiting . . . Fall Season 2013 COLIN HAY of Men at Work
Fri, Sept 13 • 7:30pm Colin Hay may be best known as the lead singer for Men At Work, the platinum selling Australian band that topped worldwide charts in the 80s with anthems like Down Under, Overkill, and Who Can It Be Now? Most artists who have experienced the levels of success and adulation would be content to sit back and earn a living walking to the mailbox and back. Yet Hay is restless, eager to move forward and continually hone his craft while continuing to challenge himself. Hay’s solo shows intersperse classic and new songs with hilarious, poignant, and downright surreal stories drawn from his often unbelievable experiences over the past three decades. Themes of redemption and renewal come naturally to Colin Hay, as he is in the midst of a remarkable renaissance. He is a master of the one-man show and at the absolute peak of his craft. Armed with an acoustic guitar, his rich memorable voice, and decades of road experience, he is an entertainer in the true sense of the word. Colin takes the audience on a musical journey, sometimes straight down the main road, and sometimes taking the twists and turns of the road less traveled. Whether or not you have seen him before, you will laugh, you may shed a tear, but you will most certainly be more than entertained. colinhay.com Chris Trapper opens. Chris Trapper’s music can best be described as lyrically driven roots-pop with a knack for telling everyday stories filled with extraordinary characters. As the front man for late-90’s alternative rock band The Push Stars, four CD releases and several high profile national tours -- including a run with Matchbox Twenty – all have served to establish Chris as an authentic talent. As a modern day singer /songwriter, Chris is most known for his song This Time, the #1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for August Rush. christrapper.com

Livingston Taylor
Fri, Sept 20 • 7:30pm
Thanksgivings at the Taylor house: Livingston: Hey, Jon Landau is producing my first album! (1970) Hey, I wrote a children’s book! (1988) Hey, I have, like, 14 albums out! (1999) Hey, I’m an Artist-in-Residence at Harvard! (2000) James: I wrote Fire and Rain. Livingston: Darn it. Ever since he picked up his first guitar at the age of 13, Livingston Taylor has carved his own path with his voice and vision. Known for his comfortable and entertaining stage presence, he brings together the pure joy of performance with a professionalism gained from decades of experience. Taylor began playing coffeehouses at 16, released his first record at 19, and hasn’t stopped recording, performing, and teaching others the art of music ever since. In addition to songwriting and a robust tour schedule of some 80 shows per year, Taylor is a full professor at Berkley College of Music, where he has taught a popular Stage Performance course since 1989. From his Top-40 hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running” to “I Can Dream of You” and “Boatman,” both recorded by his brother James, he fills his concerts with upbeat storytelling, a joyous and tuneful selection of his own writing, touching ballads, and a perfect splash of songs from the great American songbook. Quite simply, an exhilarating musical journey! livtaylor.com
Ole & Lena’s Wedding
Caravan of Thieves
Sat, Sept 21 • TWO SHOWS! 3:00pm & 7:00pm UFF DA! The butt of classic Scandihoovian joke springs to life in a comedy by Change of Pace Productions, a talented acting troupe from Duluth, Minnesota. You are cordially invited to the marriage ceremony of Lena Arlene Handspringinnen—daughter of Toivo & Gladys Handspringinnen to Ole Olafson, Jr - son of Ole, Sr and Lois Olaffson. At the center of the action is Ole Olafsson Jr., the overly nervous and easily bossed groom, and Lena Handspringinnen, the overly worried and perfection-seeking bride. A well-meaning but befuddled Lutheran pastor presides over the ceremony in which Lena shares her emotional vows - vows that, of course, make the stolid Ole a tad uncomfortable. Meanwhile, accordion-playing Pantsloff is not quite willing to let go of the torch he bears for Lena. Throughout it all, the audience becomes wedding guests enjoying a photo montage of the bride and groom growing up and receiving a nametag identifying them as a friend or family member of the bride or groom. You might want to change into your good clothes. Whatever. Get your tickets early, it seems everybody wants to be invited to Ole & Lena’s wedding! changeofpaceproductions.com
Fri, Sept 27 • 7:30pm
Somewhere between the Balkans and Bram Stoker lies Connecticut’s own Caravan of Thieves. This lively band spins dramatic and satirical tales with sultry harmonies, free-swinging rhythms and a touch of vaudevillian theatrics. Decked out in Victorian-style top hats and suits, they bring whimsy and cheek with utterly supernatural musicianship. Their unapologetic gypsy jam comes complete with moments of jazz, improvisation, participation, snaps, claps, stomps, and a barrage of junk percussion. The popularity of this ragtag quartet has been tremendous. They have taken their animated show on the road with world renowned artists such as Emmylou Harris, Dan Hicks, Glen Campbell, Nanci Griffith, The Decemberists, Keb Mo, Tom Tom Club, Iron and Wine, Punch Brothers, John Jorgenson and many others. Caravan connected with audiences on each of these diverse and at times, odd fitting bills proving the music to be a hit with folk, pop, rock and jazz appreciators alike. In only ten months they went from a support act to selling out their first headline show. Caravan of Thieves is a unique kind of ruckus that cannot be ignored and to understand the colorful spectacle, it is best to see them live. If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton’s house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they hired. Sounds like a party we all want to attend! caravanofthieves.com
Jill & Julia Show! Jill Sobule and Julia Sweeney
“…brilliant, topical, funny and more than a little poignant. “
Thur, Sept 26 • 7:30pm
–The NY Times
Singer/Songwriter Jill Sobule and the infamous SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE comedian (PAT!) Julia Sweeney, team up for a delightful show that mixes witty songwriting with a little bit of social commentary. The Jill and Julia Show is a delightful, poignant, yet wildly entertaining mash-up of music, comedy, improvisation and monologues. The one-of-a-kind performance revolves around embedding Julia’s stories into songs of Jill’s that share a common theme, creating a sum greater than the individual parts. Julia Sweeney became famous in the early 1990s for portraying the androgynous character Pat in ‘’It’s Pat!’’ skits on ‘’Saturday Night Live.’’ She has also been a successful monologist and her powerful solo shows continue to carve out her own territory in entertainment, one that moves between the personal and political, controversial and comical. juliasweeney.com Jill Sobule, is known for her character-driven folk songs, like the pre-Katy Perry hit ‘’I Kissed a Girl.’’ She isn’t just another singer-songwriter with catchy tunes and smart lyrics; she’s one of the more insightful satirists of our age and hilarious as all get out. Over seven albums and a decade of recording, Jill has mused on topics such as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, adolescence and the French resistance movement. jillsobule.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Darrell Scott & Tim O’Brien Sat, Sept 28 • 7:30pm
When Robert Plant and his Band of Joy needed a man who could do it all, they called on Darrell Scott, and he delivered. Mark Knopfler and Steve Earle each made the same call to Tim O’Brien, and he delivered. Darrell and Tim have travelled the highways and byways of America recording and playing their unique brand of country, Americana, and bluegrass music. Although these two musicians are extraordinary on their own, when Tim and Darrell perform together they create music so captivating and harmonies so compelling, you begin to wonder how they have ever been apart. O’Brien, GRAMMY-winning mandolin player, described as “one of the spearheads of contemporary bluegrass,” is known on the festival circuit for his earlier groundbreaking work with Hot Rize and later work as a solo artist. Scott, a GRAMMY-nominated performer, is best known for his resolute guitar playing, rough and honest vocal style and success as one of the best country songwriters of his time. Between the two of them, they have written major hits for Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, Keb Mo, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Guy Clark, and Sam Bush. Both are multi-instrumentalists, wizards of mandolin, guitar, banjo, and bouzouki. Darrell Scott and Tim O’Brien are two master musicians and songwriters that have that special chemistry that happens only once in a life time. These men play together like they were meant to play together and to experience this concert you will see why many say that Tim and Darrell are one of the greatest songwriter/picker duo’s in the history of Americana. Some music you experience with your ears, some with your eyes. You will feel this music at the base of your spine. It is what all music should be. timobrien.net darrellscott.com

Brubeck Brothers Quartet “A Loving Tribute to Dave Brubeck” Thur, Oct 3 • 7:30pm Chris and Dan Brubeck had the unique privilege of growing up, listening to, studying with, and eventually playing alongside one of the great jazz legends of our time, their father, Dave Brubeck (December 6, 1920 – December 5, 2012). Dave was a one of the most revered and distinguished improvisers and ambassadors of American jazz and culture. After making the cover of Time magazine in 1954 as the subject of a story that began by pointing out that fans described him as “as a wigging cat with a far-out wail,” he hit the mainstream hard in 1959 with the unlikely success of “Take Five”. While carrying on the legacy is an important project, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is far from a cover band. There is an organic originality that seems to have been passed down from father to sons. It’s rare to find this combination of sizzling swing, rich melodies, tight arrangements, inventive solos, and warm, yet crisp playing – but the world-renowned, internationally-acclaimed BBQ consistently astonishes and excites. As always, Chris’s fretless expressions on trombone and bass are strong, propulsive, and full of wit while Dan’s polyrhythms are rarely less than electrifying. Both guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb are also superb, and their compositions and interpretations fit seamlessly into the mix. Jazz is indeed the Brubeck family business. A thriving business built on talent, originality and an indescribable gift from a higher power to make music that is sure to last for generations to come. brubeckbrothers.com
“If there is such a thing as ‘born musicians’ then surely the sons of famed jazz pianist Dave Brubeck qualify.” –The Courier-Journal
Grandmothers of Invention Fri, Oct 4 • 7:30pm
ATTENTION ZAPPAPHILES! Former members of Frank Zappa’s “The Mothers of Invention” Napoleon Murphy Brock and Don Preston along with Miroslav Tadic and Christopher Garcia have teamed up and are headed to Stoughton to give you all the Zappa fix you have been craving. Rare are the musicians who can even play Zappa’s music, let alone make it live and breathe. Because The GrandMothers played with the maestro himself and consistently perform his genius works - they are able to go deeper into the material, rather than merely parroting Zappa’s notoriously tricky composed lines, as many try to do. With three different Zappa eras represented, the GrandMothers have a wide palette of material to choose from. They serve up vintage psychedelia - rock songs with surreal lyrics, jazz-like harmonies and melodic complexity, with flashes of wacky satire and magic. Join us for this special event as we come together to celebrate one of America’s most innovative rock ‘n’ rollers, Frank Zappa. From “We’re Only In It For The Money”, “Uncle Meat”, and “Burnt Weeny Sandwich” to “The Grand Wazoo”, “Overnite Sensation”, “Roxy & Elsewhere”, “Bongo Fury”, “One Size Fits All”, and of course, the classic “Freak Out”… Zappa fans are going to go bananas for this show, so get your tickets early! grandmothersofinvention.com

Paul Otteson & Faux Fawn with Dietrich Gosser Sat Oct 5 • 7:30pm
Wrapped in a shroud of fabled stories, forgotten characters, and haunted landscapes; Paul Otteson has found his stride as a songwriter and as a composer. Upon releasing his debut album February Fables in 2011, Otteson garnered immediate recognition as a thoughtful storyteller and prolific songwriter. Three albums later, now with his dynamic band in tow, the group has established itself as a mainstay in the Madison music scene. Taking thoughtful steps drenched in lush harmonies and foreboding instrumentation, this special evening will mark the release of Paul’s third full length album: Lonesome Loon. Admittedly darker and more reflective than previous efforts; this collection of songs takes the listener through a starless night, led only by the warm glow of Otteson and his brilliant band. paulotteson.tumblr.com With an ear for soundscapes reminiscent of the junkyard clatter of Tom Waits and Joe Henry, Midwestern singer/ songwriter Dietrich Gosser is out in support of his 2013 release, Somewhere in the Night. Following in the footsteps of the two full-length albums that came before it, this album is a stunning example of Gosser’s imaginative, yet rooted songwriting style. Each song begins with one foot planted firmly in a dusty and forlorn folk tradition; a few songs even stay there, but most use their dynamic arrangements and elusive lyrics as a vehicle to arrive at a more sweeping, romantic landscape. Tales of adolescent heartbreak and the intoxicating boredom of bank heists come to life with clanging metals and sustaining cymbals rising out of subtle, acoustic arrangements. The production carries you to a world of big lakes, long drives, and imaginary radio stations rising from the cornfields. “Dietrich Gosser makes folk-y bedroom pop that sounds big and inviting, often with the help of drummer and avant-percussionist Dan Kuemmel. With or without the atmospherics, Gosser’s music has a quiet, unassuming quality that can set a convincing mood with just a few patient notes...” dietrichgosser.com

Crystal Bowersox
Fri, Oct 11 • 7:30pm Every now and again in an industry that is saturated with over hyped here today and gone tomorrow talent - an artist comes along who truly embodies a unique sound and vision. Crystal Bowersox is that artist. The small town Ohio born singer/ songwriter and guitarist whose early performances began in coffeehouses and later Chicago’s underground subway circuit, was catapulted to stardom when she captured the hearts of millions as a finalist on Season 9 of American Idol. Crystal Bowersox’s gentle strength, quiet wisdom, immense emotional depth and angelic voice made a connection with the show’s viewers. With a confidence and rich soulfulness well beyond her years, she made a lasting impression – and boy has she been keeping busy. Crystal just came out with an intelligent and soulful sophomore album All That For This, she’s selling out shows nationwide, and she’s making her Broadway debut in a role of a lifetime as Patsy Cline, a musical based on the country legend’s life. Crystal’s rich amalgam of blues, country, folk, and rock makes her one of the most dynamic young voices in music. She has performed alongside everyone from Harry Connick Jr., Joe Cocker, and Alanis Morrisette, to Michael Franti, John Popper and BB King. Although the silvery residue from Idol has faded a bit, her raw and authentic voice still rings true, making her an artist who truly embodies a unique sound and vision … simply put, Crystal is proving with every passionate note she sings that she is here to stay. We didn’t necessarily book Crystal Bowersox because of her past successes; we booked her because of her most promising future. crystalbowersox.com

Sarah Jarosz Sat, Oct 12 • 7:30pm
Sarah Jarosz is the real deal. A gifted songwriter, a powerful voice and a musical virtuoso that shakes the feet, weakens the knees and boggles the mind. Sarah landed on the acoustic music scene as a mandolin wunderkind in her young teens. Jamming onstage with bluegrass icons David Grisman and Ricky Skaggs, she played with a sure touch and real joy that belied her years. While her instrumental talents are formidable, Sarah is an equally gifted vocalist and songwriter, talents which led then-16-year-old Jarosz to a record deal with legendary roots label Sugar Hill Records and a major in contemporary vocal improvisation at the prestigious New England Conservatory. Sarah Jarosz has as rich a skill set as anybody in acoustic music. She plays, not just one instrument, but enough of them to be a one-woman string band: mandolin, octave mandolin, claw hammer banjo and guitar. She sings—in supple tones that transcend the boundaries between folk and pop—and she writes old-timey ballads and modern singer-songwriter ruminations alike. In her short and blooming career she has seen a GRAMMY nomination and performances on Austin City Limits and A Prairie Home Companion as well as prestigious music festivals—Bonnaroo, Telluride and Newport, to name a few. Sarah Jarosz, is accompanied by Alex Hargreaves playing violin and Nathaniel Smith playing cello. The incredibly talented trio is growing deeper and deeper with every performance. Come and see for yourself… sarahjarosz.com

Cowboy Junkies Sun, Oct 27 • 7:30pm
Rooted in a melancholic mixture of blues, country, folk, and rock styles, the worldfamous Cowboy Junkies sound just like what the name suggests: you can identify the band that’s playing the languid, darkly seductive music after hearing just a few notes. Often described as haunting, alluring and dreamy, Cowboy Junkies have long since secured their place in the annals pop rock history. The Junkies charted several platinum and gold albums in Canada, from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. They’ve been consistently active since they formed in 1985, releasing albums and DVDs, and touring. That’s 27 years and counting – an absolute eternity in the music business. Recently, they reached the end of an extraordinarily ambitious project: releasing four albums in a mere eighteen months. The last album in the series, The Wilderness, was released in March 2012. This provides proof positive that their creative fire is far from extinguished. The group, which consists of Alan Anton (bass), Michael Timmins (guitar), Margo Timmins (vocals) and Peter Timmins (Drums), likes to change things up from show to show and will choose from a variety of songs spanning from the mid-1980s through their newest album. If you know the Cowboy Junkies for their big hit “Sweet Jane,” you probably think of their sound as somewhat subdued. Make no mistake: their sound has been getting deeper and even more enduring over time. The Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective, quiet intensity that is their musical signature, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. cowboyjunkies.com
Ladies Must Swing Sun Nov 3 • 2:00pm
An Evening with Judy Collins Fri, Nov 1 • 7:30pm
Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. The music of this Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter could be the soundtrack of your life. With her contemplative songs, creamy voice, and heart-felt delivery, she has been entertaining—and enthralling— fans for many years. In this special return performance, (she sold out the opera house last fall) Collins will take the audience on a journey showcasing her legendary, wideranging vocal talents, performing ballads from her vast songbook including “Both Sides Now,” and “Send in the Clowns,” all delivered in her limpid, vibrato-free voice, hardly touched by time, and still as direct as an arrow to the heart. judycollins.com
Oh it don’t mean a thing, if you ain’t got that Swing! The group’s name says it all… and swing they do! Ladies Must Swing are a 19-piece award-winning big band consisting of 19 energetic dames from Madison and surrounding areas that play nostalgic big band swing music and much more. During World War II, American men answered the call to arms from every walk of life. From the factory to the fields, women stepped up to fill the absent soldier’s spot in the workplace. Most people remember Rosie the Riveter, an iconic worker, with her sleeves rolled up and her goggles pulled down. Less celebrated, but no less important to the war effort were the “Swing Shift Maisies.” These women made up the “Girl Bands” of the 1940’s. Singing and swinging their way into the hearts of those who kept the home-fires burning, as well as enchanting the troops overseas with the USO, was their mission. After the war, men returned to the stages and women, regretfully relinquished their batons. Capturing the essence of these nearly forgotten “Girl Bands,” the women of Ladies Must Swing bop their way through a roaring repertoire of 20th century dance classics -Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, Seems Like Old Times, Leap Frog, In the Mood, Tennessee Waltz, and much more! Come by for the afternoon to see, hear, celebrate and re-live history; we guarantee a swinging good time! ladiesmustswing.com
Basia Bulat
Wed, Nov 6 • 7:30pm
It’s safe to say that Basia Bulat (Bosh-uh Boo-lot) is bringing a little soul to folk music. Hailing from the forest city of London, Ontario, Basia found her songs and stories dangling from the trees. She began playing the piano at age three and never stopped making music. Infused with sweet ragtime piano melodies, tender-hearted string arrangements (she plays guitar, autoharp, ukulele, etc.), and a remarkable throaty voice, her songs discuss love and life with a combination of sadness and wonder. Live in concert you will instantly notice that you are witnessing a star being born. (think a young Joni Mitchell) With charisma to burn, Basia brings her unique blend of folk and chamber pop to audiences all around the world, gaining fans from the very first note. Her first album, Oh My Darling—short-listed for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize—impressed fans and critics alike, and was followed by Heart of My Own in early 2010. With a third album scheduled for release this fall (hooray!) and a humble, engaging stage presence, Basia continues to charm at every turn. Says Frank Yang on Chromewaves, “Using the most straightforward descriptors—jazz-inflected, orchestral folk pop with a dash of northern soul—make [her music] sound more conventional than I’d like so instead, I’ll try this. Basia Bulat sounds like springtime smiling. Her music is rich yet breezy, with a melodic enthusiasm that’s nothing short of delightful.” basiabulat.com Stoughton Opera House Box Office: (608) 877-4400

Count This Penny
Fri Nov 8 • 7:30pm
Amanda & Allen Rigell play guitar and bass, and their voices—one a bit gravelly, the other crystal clear—form gorgeous textured harmonies. Allen insists he learned guitar ten years ago to impress Amanda, a high school friend and fellow Emory University student who’d already been playing for about five years. It worked. From Johnson City, eastern Tennessee, the couple knows Appalachia well: it was their back yards, their front porches, and the mountain’s musical traditions which are the cornerstone of their sound. As their voices intertwine, like streams down a mountainside, the Rigell’s tell stories through song. To experience them live in concert you can actually feel their genuine joy and love of music, which has undoubtedly contributed to their remarkable accomplishments in the past few years. Count This Penny’s EP reached #6 on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart, and the band has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, Wisconsin Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Television’s 30-Minute Music Hour, and WDVX’s Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, TN. This past year, amidst sold-out hometown and regional shows, they’re writing new songs that ring out even shinier -- and sharper around the edges. Don’t miss CTP; trust us, its well worth every penny! countthispenny.com
Tani Diakite & the Afrofunkstars Sat Nov 9 • 7:30pm
Bringing a bit of his native Mali to Madison, Tani Diakite is a musical force who has inspired an entire community of artists. With his Kamale n’goni, a West African ancestor to the banjo, and his plaintive singing, he drops the deepest blues around. The Kamale n’goni (“young person’s harp”) is a ten- or eleven-stringed long-neck gourd instrument outfitted with an electronic pick-up made from old radio parts. Very rhythmic, with a dance/funk/blues/bluegrass sound, the Kamale n’goni serves as the centerpiece of a popular Malian style called Wasulu. Diakite, who has been living and playing in Madison for years, makes his own. Another driving force of Wasulu music is percussion, and the Afrofunkstars are backed up by one of the hottest rhythm sections around, featuring Paddy Cassidy on jembe, Hugo Reynolds on drumset, and Mamoudou Diallo and Djam Vivie on percussion. The funk is rounded out by bass powerhouse Nickolas Moran, Peter Baggenstoss on keyboards, and Matt Manske on guitar. The interplay between Kamale N’goni and jembe grooves so hard that audiences can’t stay still—the urge to get up and move is too powerful! Diakite’s voice steals the show in the end. Authentic and melodic, with poise and control, he sings of nature and spiritual themes with references to himself, his family and ancestors in Mali. Lyrics taken from their song Laban (The Last): “In the end, we will never know about the world / This is why we should enjoy our time,” We should all take a little time and enjoy this unique artist living and creating in our midst. tanidiakite.bandcamp.com

The Wailin’ Jennys
Fri Nov 15 & Sat Nov 16 • 7:30pm The Juno award-winning Wailin’ Jennys are three extraordinary women whose beautiful, heart-stopping harmonies, uplifting repertoire and engaging stage presence delight and charm audiences worldwide. Their acoustic blend of bluegrass, folk and roots music has been featured on A Prairie Home Companion and alongside Bonnie Raitt and Roseanne Cash. The Wailin’ Jennys’ sound is enriched by their diverse musical backgrounds that make them one of the most exciting groups in folk and roots music. The classically trained vocals of Ruth Moody (vocals, guitar, accordion, and banjo) showcase her versatility as a singer in traditional and Celtic music. Complementing Ruth’s soprano voice is mezzo Nicky Mehta (vocals, guitar, harmonica), who won a Canadian Music Award for her 2002 solo album Weather Vane. Nicky is a trained dancer raised on classical music and heavily influenced by alternative pop. Rounding out the trio is Heather Masse (vocals, upright bass) who comes steeped in both bluegrass and jazz traditions. As a Jazz Voice graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music she has also performed with the Wayfaring Strangers, Joy Kills Sorrow and Heather & The Barbarians. With their varying backgrounds, each of the Jennys are unique in their individual expression. Together they forge a unified folk-pop sound—all delivered with the irresistible vocal power of three. Rickie Lee Jones Thur Nov 21 • 7:30pm
From the moment she first appeared in front of us on Saturday Night Live in 1979, Rickie Lee Jones has challenged her listeners and the establishment with an absorbing musical vision that defies border and classification. Jones settled in LA at the age of nineteen, doing the classic waiting tables stuff until she landed a recording contract with Warners. Her self-titled debut album in 1979 was a big success, as was the single, Chuck E.’s in Love, about her musician friend Chuck E. Weiss. At the 1980 Grammy Awards, she won a Grammy for Best New Artist, and also received four more nominations: for Record of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female; Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female; and Song of the Year (for “Chuck E.’s in Love”). While none of her subsequent recordings achieved the same level of commercial success, Jones has continued releasing critically acclaimed albums that have explored a variety of sonic terrain from jazz standards to trip hop influenced works. She rocked the culture of singer-song writerdom with her refusal to conform to the stayed and careful eloquence of the folk rock generation that came before her. Neither punk nor pop, she tottered on a thread of her own devise, jazz - the old musical kind, and R&B - the Motown thread that permeates her work. Rickie Lee’s retakes on classic rock hits have been described as radically raw, fearless, and even rapturous. Her sense of humor, musical dexterity and song craft is all evident in her live shows, which show her fearless experimentation and even after 4 decades, she still has her hauntingly beautiful voice. Don’t miss this two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist, producer, songwriter, and musician when she graces the stage with wonderfully eclectic music stylings. rickieleejones.com

Emo Philips Fri, Nov 22 • 7:30pm
With a wide-eyed, childlike stare, Emo Philips draws the audience down a winding garden path, the listener hanging on every word, softly spoken in an innocently wavering falsetto sing-song voice. Suddenly you find yourself in an Alice in Wonderland world where nothing is as it truly seems. Emo’s mastery of misdirection is the epic cornerstone of his comedy and an ability that other comedians have tried to emulate, but have never really come close to recreating. Emo Philip’s genius has definitely been recognized by audiences (with über fans labeling themselves as Emopheliacs), by the industry (Jay Leno contends that Emo Philips is the best joke writer in America) and in the popular press (GQ Magazine commissioned a panel which judged three of Emo’s jokes to be included in the best seventy-five joke of all time). Since starting out at age twenty in Chicago in 1976, Emo has had award-winning comedy albums, several cable specials (including an hour-long one on HBO), and many appearances on network television, in both America and the UK. He has appeared in films and has lent his distinctive voice to animated TV shows (such as Doctor Katz, Slacker Cats and Home Movies), but his first love, stand-up, remains his true one. Often sporting a Prince Valient-esque pageboy or Billy Idol-like bleached spikes, Philips is an absurdist in both appearance and delivery with his falsetto tone, childlike delivery and bizarre on-stage mannerisms. Come experience this comedy legend at the Opera House for a night of bizarre thoughts, analogies and crafty one-liners like, “How many people in here have telekinetic powers? Raise my hand.” emophilips.com
Pokey LaFarge
Fri, Dec 6 • 7:30pm
Willy Porter Sat Nov 23 • 7:30pm
How does a young viola player become a folk-rock guitarist? Perhaps Leo Kottke is to blame. At least in Willy Porter’s case he is. Upon hearing Kottke’s 6 & 12 String Guitar, everything changed for a young Porter. He put down his bow and grabbed a pick. The rest is history and still in the making. Hailing from Wisconsin, the multiple WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) award winner honed his performance chops in the cafés and clubs around Madison. He also sat on the concert committee in college where he met another guitar legend who would influence him greatly, the late Michael Hedges. A singer, songwriter, storyteller, entertainer, and extraordinary guitarist, Porter defies labels and bends genres. He moves between slide blues, acoustic folk, grooving rock, and soulful pop with grace and equipoise. They all combine to create the uniqueness that is his sound. willyporter.com
Pokey LaFarge and his band sound as if someone had dug up an antique radio, turned it on and heard the music of its era. Decked out in a fedora and vintage clothes, Pokey might be taken for a youthful Bing Crosby and although Crosby drifted popward, LaFarge, who turns 30 this year, has embraced a broad swath of Americana to complement his jazz inclinations, creating a distinct persona that’s definitely not of this century. Yet the charismatic LaFarge and his fleet-fingered band generate such crackling energy live that you’d swear somebody’s time traveling. Over the last decade, Pokey LaFarge has won the hearts of music lovers across the globe with his creative mix of Pre-WW2 jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing, all while writing songs that ring true in both spirit and sound. His music transcends the confines of genre, continually challenging the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. Rather than merely conjuring up half-forgotten imagery of days past, Pokey is a lyrical storyteller, the plot delivered through his dynamic vocals. One moment he shouts a line and the next he croons above his archtop guitar, backed by an often ornate, acoustic instrumentation that allows for nothing less than masterful instrumental skill. Born in the heartland of America and based in St. Louis, Missouri, Pokey’s effortless wit and approachable demeanor charms audiences both on and off stage, giving way to a live music experience that manages to be grandiose and unassuming all at once. Pokey LaFarge offers the full package of performer, innovator and preservationist that promises to keep him at the forefront of American music. pokeylafarge.net

We Create Futures
The Stoughton Chamber Singers and the Bel Canto String Ensemble under the direction of John Beutel have chosen a quote from Shakespeare, “Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind”, as the title for their annual Victorian Holiday Concert. Whether people love or hate winter doesn’t matter, we will perform music that uses the elements of winter as metaphor and music that has been inspired by the season. Winter, namely December, is the time of Christmas, so seasonal music by Elgar, Rutter, Holst and other composers will be included on the program along with some “winter” madrigals which have become a traditional part of the Stoughton Chamber Singers’ program.

Madison Brass Band Sat, Jan 25 • 3:00pm
With a reputation in the community and among brass bands for innovative and entertaining performances, Madison Brass Band has a long history of entertaining audiences. Bavarian immigrant George Scherer founded the original Madison Brass Band in 1863. Its first members were businessmen, cobblers, cigar-makers, stone-cutters, and a saloon proprietor. Only one member was a professional musician. The band went into remission until 2002 when it was reestablished – since then the Madison Brass Band has become one of southern Wisconsin’s premier musical ensembles, sharing the unique spirit and beauty of the distinctive, mellow British-style brass band sound with a unique early American twist. The 30 piece ensemble has an active performance schedule including concerts and competitions. Most recently, in 2012, the band participated in the North American Brass Band Association Championships for the first time and was named Champions of the Second Section. MBB is directed by music educator and composer Craig Mason who generates a strong synergy throughout the band in every musical genre. Under Craig’s skillful direction the individual talent of even the finest player is often exceeded in context of the ensemble as a whole. Craig’s most sensitive interpretations in both his arrangements and conducting have won the heart of both player and listener alike. Don’t just take our word for it, come out and see for yourself! madisonbrass.com

Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives Sat, Feb 1 • 7:30pm
Marty Stuart is a five time GRAMMY-winner, platinum recording artist, Grand Ole Opry star, country music archivist, Southern culture historian, photographer, musician, songwriter, TV show host, charismatic force of nature, and country music fan. Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart, has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music with a missionary’s zeal. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ‘70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band during the ‘80s and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ‘90s. The turn of the century saw Stuart looking inward to make deeply felt records paying homage to his love of vintage gospel, his Native American passions, and as always, his core -- foot-stompin’, tail-shakin’, honky tonkin’, rockin’ hillbilly music. His latest musical oeuvre is ably supported by the coolest cats in Nashville - his backing band, The Fabulous Superlatives: guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson, and bassist Paul Martin. Stuart’s zest for every conceivable flavor of country music is also seen regularly by TV viewers these days, on RFD-TV’s The Marty Stuart Show, a musical variety show and the number one program on the network. So, what’s next? As musicologist Peter North cites, “Marty Stuart seems wrapped in his destiny at this point in time. Not only as country music’s most notable ambassador/caretaker, but as its main archetypical crusader. He has without question evolved into one of the most important roots musicians and visionaries in America.” Stay tuned. martystuart.net
Josh Ritter (solo) Wed, Feb 5 • 7:30pm
You could argue there is a line in every Josh Ritter song that immediately stops you in your thoughts, making you wonder just how talented and magical the songwriter from Idaho really is. Over the past dozen years, Josh Ritter has risen from the expansive middle class of American singer-songwriters to a position as one of his generation’s brightest talents. An evocative poet with a sharp observational eye and a striking sense of maturity, he writes rich, nuanced narratives about romance, Americana and the like. (He’s also a fine guitar player, particularly when he’s fingerpicking in the style of John Fahey.) The son of two neuroscientists, he was on his way to follow in their footsteps when he discovered Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country” in high school. Ritter has been called one of the “10 Most Exciting Artists Now” by Entertainment Weekly and one of the “100 Best Living Songwriters” by Paste Magazine, alongside Dylan, Springsteen, and Neil Young. His sixth studio album The Beast In Its Tracks was released in March of 2012 and debuted at #22 on the Billboard 200 and #8 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums. In addition to this commercial success, the album continues to receive widespread critical acclaim— NPR Music calls it, “…gorgeous and glorious,” while Pitchfork praises, “Beast is contemplative and forgiving, a means of burying one relationship to commit to another, and Ritter nicely evokes the excitement and resignation of such a transition.” When the market is flooded with sensitive male singer/songwriters at the moment, how does one find room for one more? Easy, when one of them writes music as timeless, classic and important as Josh’s. Mr. Ritter writes beautifully crafted songs; scattered with poetic lyricism and visual imagery that imbeds into your psyche long after the songs have ended. Josh is one of those special singer/songwriters that has slowly built more ground with each new release and quietly he has become one of this generation’s greatest singer/songwriters. joshritter.com

Mix the groundbreaking Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues with the whimsical vocal trio Sons of the Never Wrong and you will have a night out that the whole family will treasure. The Chicago Tribune says, “Gritty Chicago blues and rarefied classical chamber music might not seem like a match made in heaven until you’ve heard Corky Siegel bring the two together.” His early years with the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band, his solo performances, and his groundbreaking blues-classical collaborations are all a reflection of Corky’s wide-ranging brilliance. Walking the line between Beethoven and B.B. King, and armed with the creative genius and instrumental prowess that have defined his career for nearly four decades, Corky has pioneered an original, genre-busting Chamber blues–a fresh, innovative sound capturing the sparkling qualities of classical music merged with the emotional, melodic style of blues. SONS are as good as it gets when it comes to skewing the notion of 3-part harmony within original, whimsical songs that spring from both a folk tradition and some other melodic planet you might never have visited. A trio from Chicago made up of Sue Demel, Deborah Lader and Bruce Roper, these three kind of mixed-up adults of perfect parentage are just crazy enough to think life in the fast lane comes with a banjo (wait, doesn’t it?). For 20 years, Sons has been wowing their fans with their music, humor, and outrageously fun live show. chamberblues.com Our heartfelt thanks to Julie & Larry Midtbo for their generous sponsorship of this show.

Harry Manx Fri, Feb 21 • 7:30pm
“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which became Harry’s signature instrument) in India over a period of twelve years. Having invested in both styles, Harry saw a connection between Indian ragas and blues scales, the exploration of which led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style. “Indian music moves a person inward,” he says of the style traditionally used in religious ceremonies and meditations. “But Western music has the ability to move you outward, into celebration and dance. There are some ragas that sound bluesy, and ways to bend strings while playing blues that sound Indian.” A prolific artist, Manx has released 12 albums in a 12 year span with no signs of stopping. He has received seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Solo Artist, and CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award.” The recipe? Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and throw in some compelling grooves. The music of Harry Manx goes down easy and leaves you hungry for more. harrymanx.com
An Evening with Tom Rush Sat, Feb 22 • 7:30pm
Drawing on over four decades as a folk troubadour, Tom Rush’s performances roam a vast musical territory, from sweet ballads to gritty blues, offering a celebration of where acoustic music has come from and where it’s going. Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ‘60s and the renaissance of the ‘80s and ‘90s. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor, and in more recent years his Club 47 concerts have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations. Tom is still going strong today. His voice has grown even richer and more melodic with training, and his music, like a fine wine, has matured and ripened in the blending of traditional and modern influences. Tom is continuing to write and perform classics like No Regrets”and River Song and his most recent album, What I Know, were voted Folk Album of the Year by the International Folk Alliance. Tom Rush is, in short, folk royalty. The warm, homey magic spun in the course of a Tom Rush performance has often been likened to a cozy evening spent in front of a living room fire. (We’d all be lucky to have such living rooms!) So grab a chair and prepare yourself to be captivated by this preeminent singer-songwriter, whose expressive voice, distinctive guitar style, terrific yarn-spinning, and wry sense of humor have defined acoustic music for generations. tomrush.com
Fri, Feb 28 • 7:30pm Last spring, Eilen announced on stage that she was quite smitten with the Opera House. Well, the feeling was mutual, which is why we asked her and her band to come back! Eilen Jewell’s songs feel like an old friend from the moment you hear them. Her melodies carry an easy groove; her lyrics have the raw nakedness born of simple words, cutting straight to the heart. While some songs are more personal than others, even those she covers are molded to fit her attitude, making everything she touches a personal tale with which everyone can somehow relate. Since her official 2006 debut, Boundary County, Jewell has surveyed a wide range of traditional musical styles: from the folk and jug band leanings of her early recordings to an album-length homage to Loretta Lynn and the country gospel of her work with The Sacred Shakers, right up to 2009s Sea of Tears, which bristled with the electricity of ’60s UK garage rock and Chicago blues. Queen of the Minor Key, Jewell’s newest album, draws on everything from classic country to early R&B, with an emphasis on sounds from the seamier side of the tracks. With her arresting style (Part Madeleine Peyroux, part Kelly Willis, part Billie Holiday, and all with the directness of Hank Williams) and her mesmerizing slowed voice, Eilen Jewell enchants her listeners. For fans of Lucinda Williams, Jolie Holland, Gillian Welch and Billie Holiday, this show will have you believing you’ve always been a fan! eilenjewell.com

The Stray Birds Sat, March 1 • 7:30pm
When The Stray Birds take the stage, the spotlight falls on three voices raised in joyful harmony above the raw resonance of wood and strings. It is a sound drawn from the richness of American folk music traditions, spun with a stirring subtlety and grace. Raised on music within a few miles of farmland from each other, The Stray Birds were born of a compelling collaboration between two unique writers and vocalists– the pure, luxurious voice of Maya de Vitry and Oliver Craven’s richness of tone and depth of delivery. Grounding their sound in the unshakeable groove of bassist Charles Muench, Connection to the audience is the essence of The Stray Birds shows. Gathering around one microphone, they create their soaring sound which is best described as stunning, intense, dynamic and steeped in tradition. They have played passionately throughout the country including high profile folk festivals and on Mountain Stage with Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Named one of NPR’s Top 10 Folk Groups for 2012 – their music resonates with rich American folk traditions and have shaped some of the richest vocal harmonies, tightest acoustic arrangements, and most heart-wrenchingly beautiful songs you’ll find anywhere. They may have strayed from the flock, but these classically trained songbirds make a most joyful and memorable noise! Send your spirit soaring and get your tickets today. thestraybirds.com

The Quebe Sisters Band
Fri, March 7 • 7:30pm When Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe (pronounced Kway-bee) raise their fiddles and play, singing in vintage style three-part harmony, hang onto your jaw. The sisters are a marvel: three voices and three instruments rolled into a single sound, rich with harmony and sweet to the ears. With highly polished talent and performances so in tune they could easily be triplets, the Quebe sisters are mesmerizing to watch. The extraordinary rhythm guitar of Joey McKenzie and the swinging upright bass of Drew Phelps complete the Quebe Sisters Band, whose unique brand of music has taken the Americana music scene by storm. With a blend of western swing, vintage country, bluegrass, jazz & swing standards, and Texas style fiddling, the award-winning band has caught the attention of audiences nationwide and beyond. The Quebe Sisters Band has performed throughout the US and Europe, as well as making appearances on the Marty Stuart Show, the Grand Ole Opry, the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center, and NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. The Quebe Sisters Band breathes life into a style of music almost forgotten. With a sound both full and pure, at once vintage and unlike anything you’ve ever heard, the Quebe Sisters Band is a phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed. quebesistersband.com
James McMurtry (solo) Sat, March 8 • 7:30pm
James McMurtry looks and sounds like a guy who prefers his songs laced with a strong dose of reality. The son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment), James grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records. His first album, Too Long in the Wasteland (1989), was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects. In 1996, McMurtry received a Grammy nomination for his Music Video of Where’d You Hide The Body. 1997s It Had To Happen received the American Indie Award for Best Americana Album. Best known for his hard-rocking drivingbeat social protest songs, James McMurtry has prodigious talents that exist far beyond the one-trick-pony stance of the angry troubadour. It’s hard to articulate what’s unique about his songs, but you know them the instant you hear them, not unlike a broad chain of deep-voiced male Southern white independent songwriting folk-country rockers with great guitar licks, great voices, great minds: Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen. Gruff and gravelly in tone, energetic guitar, gold-standard lyrics—there isn’t any fluff anywhere. James McMurtry is constantly on tour and he consistently puts on a “must-see” powerhouse performance. Over the years his many skills steadily have coalesced into an increasingly substantial, formidable whole: the voice, the tunes, the stories and the musicianship have become elementally interwoven to create the inimitable fabric of a distinct, singular artist who’s determined to get to the heart of the matter, shake things up and do whatever it takes to make a difference. jamesmcmurtry.com

Jeffrey Foucault Fri, March 14 • 7:30pm
This acclaimed singer-songwriter’s spare, gripping brand of folk leaves audiences almost hypnotized. Originally from Whitewater, Wisconsin, Foucault is a longtime disciple of the rich and strange music that sings behind the American veil. During a decade of mining the darker seams of country and blues to produce a string of elemental albums of rare power, Foucault has garnered accolades across the United States and beyond. His tersely elegant brand of songwriting is set apart by its haunting imagery and weather-beaten cool. While studying history at UW-Madison, Foucault began performing on the local coffee house circuit. Inspired by artists such as Greg Brown, John Prine and Chris Smither, he immersed himself in the roots music of his country, releasing an impressive debut album in 2001. Miles from the Lightning won much praise from critics, particularly for its narrative drive. The success of the album helped kick-start a career of tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe. While on tour, Foucault has played with such artists as Greg Brown, Gillian Welch, Todd Snider, Chris Smither, and Rosanne Cash. With his latest album, Horse Latitudes, the native Wisconsinite shows a poet’s soul ever deepening, a musical style ever more polished, and a talent ever growing. jeffreyfoucault.com

Riders in the Sky
Sat, March 22 • 7:30pm Round up your herd and join in the fun with America’s favorite singing cowboys! The four members of Riders In The Sky are still saddled up and singing after 30+ years. Adorned in their colorful Western wear, and their “Great Big Western Howdy” punctuated by yips and yodels, this quartet of madcap cowpokes consists of Ranger Doug, Idol of American Youth; Too Slim, the Fastest Wit in the West; Woody Paul, King of the Cowboy Fiddlers; and Joey, the CowPolka King. This Grammy-winning quartet mixes authentic Western music with yodeling, rope tricks, and a whole heap of crackpot humor—in the timeless tradition of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. In addition to winning two Grammys and being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, Riders are in the Western Music Association’s Hall of Fame, the Country Music Foundation’s Walkway of Stars, and the Walk of Western Stars. Billboard magazine’s Jim Bessman counts them as one of “the most historically significant acts in the history of American music.” Yes, it would be “The Easy Way” to call it a career after 30plus years, but it wouldn’t be...” The Cowboy Way!” And so, the never-ending trail drive continues. The ponies are rested and watered, and Stoughton’s Favorite Cowboys are ready to saddle up and ride, bringing good beef to hungry people wherever they may be. ridersinthesky.com

Four sets of vocal cords, four sets of strings—this is not your typical string quartet. Weaving together the crystalline beauty of their voices with the elegance of classical stringed instruments, the ladies of Real Vocal String Quartet have mastered a unique and captivating sound. This chamber ensemble with choral flair bursts from the eclectic, musically sophisticated base of the San Francisco Bay Area. RVSQ began with violinist Irene Sazer’s inspiration to combine her musical passions: chamber music, improvising, composing, and singing. With violinist Alisa Rose (from Wisconsin), violist Dina Maccabee, and cellist Jessica Ivry, Sazer’s vision sparked the creation of a truly collaborative ensemble that freely mixes and ultimately transcends genres. RVSQ’s repertoire embraces the diverse influences of all four players, including classical, jazz, rock, and styles from West Africa, Brazil, and rural America. Yet while four distinct voices can be heard, in their seven years of performing together, the ladies have achieved a true group sound: their shimmering harmonies dazzle like sun through the rain. rvsq.com

After the screening, Jerry will lead us in a discussion of life growing up on a rural Wisconsin farm. jerryapps.com

Davina and the Vagabonds Fri, April 4 • 7:30pm
Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national blues scene with their high-energy live shows, sharp-dressed professionalism, and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. So much more than just a blues act, DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Sowers is a true original. Something unique to this “blues” project is the instrumentation. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. Catch this one-of-a-kind live show while they are in town! davinaandthevagabonds.com

With their gorgeous three-part harmonies, crisp musicianship, and a warm, engaging stage presence, the ladies of Americana/roots trio Red Molly have been bringing audiences to their feet since first forming around a campsite in 2004. Laurie MacAllister (bass, banjo), Abbie Gardner (dobro, banjo) and Molly Venter (guitar), dubbed “The Twin City’s sweethearts” by the Bristol Herald Courier, moved from NYC coffeehouses to the festival circuit in less than two years. With their third year at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, the Courier praised how the ladies “lit up the stage, as a massive crowd of adoring fans sat mesmerized by their silky smooth harmonies and superb musicianship.” Light in the Sky, released in 2011, is Red Molly’s first release with Molly Venter, who joined the band when original member Carolann Solebello stepped down. Spending 20 weeks on the Americana Music Association’s Top 40 radio chart, the newest album brings back the “tick-tight arrangements, crystalline vocals and caramel harmonies” that the Boston Globe praised. Red Molly fans, referred to as “RedHeads”, have always responded to the sense that the band is a group of friends, sharing songs in their living room. With the gorgeous a cappella ballads, bluegrass-tinged folk and the touch of jazzy western swing, the trio never fails to impress and delight. Their harmonies sparkle, their instrumentals impress, and their effervescent personalities shine like the brightest stars in the sky. Red Molly is red hot! redmolly.com
The Persuasions Sat, April 12 • 7:30pm
Afro-American music - the great fusion that gave us jazz, blues and rock and roll - is captured in its purest form by The Persuasions. For decades they have been taking a cappella music to ever-new heights, reminding generations of musicians that the human voice is the subtlest and most powerful of all instruments. The Persuasions started out informally in Brooklyn in 1962, five guys who gathered at the end of the workday to sing on street corners and in the subway. Their harmonies reflected a heavy gospel influence but also soul, R&B and pop. Since the 1960’s, their consistently enjoyable music has breathed life into the a cappella tradition. Founded by Jimmy Hayes, The Persuasions have released at least a dozen acclaimed albums since being discovered by Frank Zappa fifty years ago. They have covered gospel and popular music of each decade in which they performed and recorded, including the music of Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead, Roy Hamilton, Jerry Butler, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, U2, and the Beatles. Signed to Capitol in their most productive period of the 1970’s, they stay relevant in the new millennium by reinterpreting songs for a new generation. The Persuasions have toured, performed, and recorded with Joni Mitchell, Liza Minnelli, the Grateful Dead, and Ray Charles. In addition to their own recordings, they have appeared on albums by Joni Mitchell, Don McLean, and Paul Pena, and their version of “Papa Oom Mow Mow” appeared on the soundtrack of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Having won over multiple generations throughout their impressive careers, The Persuasions have proven time and again that their traditional a cappella-style talents fill an irreplaceable role in the world of music. thepersuasions.info
The Sweetback Sisters
Playtime Productions Children’s Theater
Fri, April 25 • 7:30pm
The Sweetback Sisters may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds, as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the band’s role models. The Sweetback Sisters are a group of uniquely talented musicians whose personal histories are quite varied, diverse and definitely not your typical country music pedigrees. But when they come together on a song, hoo boy its magic; you’d think they’d been playing together since they were babies. Central to the group’s sound are vocalists Zara Bode and Emily Miller. Discovering a mutual love for Hank Williams, the girls began singing country songs after their nightly choir performances. When the tour ended, Bode and Miller both moved to Brooklyn and formed the Sweetback Sisters. They haven’t looked back since since wowing audiences with their national debut on National Public Radio’s Prairie Home Companion. Think “Indigo Girls Meet Sweethearts of the Rodeo and Get Possessed by the Ghost of Patsy Cline While Riding Shot Gun with Bob Wills in a 1939 Ford Pickup,” you might be closer to a description of the band’s special sound. The Sweetback Sisters are guaranteed to charm the boots off of one and all in their Opera House debut. Don’t miss out! thesweetbacksisters.com

An Evening with Roger McGuinn Fri, May 2 • 7:30pm
If you’ve ever lost yourself to a comfortably jangling guitar or been swept up by an airy, easygoing hook, you owe some of the experience to Roger McGuinn. As lead singer and guitarist for The Byrds, McGuinn has helped carve out a more graceful niche in psychedelic pop and folk— kinetic but never alarming, pillowy but always powerful. Roger McGuinn has been called the father of folk-rock music as his jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and complex vocal harmonies produced hits such as “Turn! Turn! Turn!”, “Mr. Tambourine Man” and the ethereal beautiful selfpenned ballads like “Chestnut Mare”. McGuinn’s contribution to the legendary 1960s cultural and artistic scene extended to movies as he is a featured singer in the cult classic movie “Easy Rider.” Among the songs he performs is the movie’s finale, “The Ballad of Easy Rider,” which he co-wrote with Dylan. While McGuinn played a central role in the birth and development of the Byrds, his musical explorations started before the famous group debuted and passionately continues long after its demise. Come join us for what promises to be a fascinating evening through rock and roll history with a man who helped create the soundtrack of the ‘60s. Roger McGuinn’s impressive playing, timeless stories, acoustic delicacy and calming tender croon will take you on a journey back to memory lane and then turn around and lead you onto a future path. ibiblio.org/jimmy/mcguinn

Dailey and Vincent
Sat, May 3 • 7:30pm There’s a rich tradition of brother acts in both country and bluegrass music. From the Monroe Brothers to the Stanleys to the Louvin Brothers, it seems there’s something special in sibling harmonies. Darrin Vincent and Jamie Daley were born far apart—the former in Missouri, the latter in Tennessee—yet to experience their heavenly harmonies, these brothers from different mothers, may have you believing they share a common genetic lineage. Dailey & Vincent is one of the top Bluegrass bands in America. Since they burst onto the scene in 2007, Dailey & Vincent have amassed an impressive array of honors including three consecutive IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year, respectively; two Grammy nominations, and the 2011 Dove Award for Bluegrass Album of the Year. Dailey & Vincent’s peerless lineup includes the outstanding mandolin playing and lead and harmony vocals of Jeff Parker, the remarkable talents of banjo player Jessie Baker, fiddler B.J. Cherryholmes, and bass singer extraordinaire Christian Davis, as well as the unmatched vocals of Jamie and Darrin themselves. The irrepressible joy these brothers from different mothers find in every note of their songs have become legendary and the band’s four-part gospel and bluegrass vocal arrangements are absolute show-stoppers. Join us for great evening of music, comedy and family memories. daileyandvincent.bombplates.com
