News: Case Management Services MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in four American adults is living with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition. Mental Health Awareness Month in May highlights that these individuals can live full and productive lives. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder are examples of mental health issues that can be treated. Family members, friends, veterans, or colleagues may be quietly struggling with a mental health issue. And you may be the person in the best position to encourage them to seek the help that can lead them on the way to healing. For more than 60 years, Mental Health America and their affiliates across the country have led the observance of May is Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events and screenings. This year's theme is Pathways to Wellness. For more information, go to http:// www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/about-us/whatwe-do/programs-and-events/mental-healthmonth A recently released Mayo Clinic study found that apathy and depression significantly predict an individual’s progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. · People with mild cognitive impairment and depression had a 66% increased risk of developing dementia. · People with mild cognitive impairment and apathy had a 99% increased risk of developing dementia.

Through a conversational process with a supportive professional, you will identify areas of personal concern. Kitchen Corner

Preventing Contamination Excerpts taken from New York Times article Jan 4, 2013 by Stephanie Strom

Recipe of the Month

“The Food and Drug Administration proposed two sweeping rules aimed at preventing the contamination of produce and processed foods, which has sickened tens of thousands of Americans annually in recent years. Changes include requirements for better record keeping, plans for handling outbreaks and measures that would prevent the spread of contaminants in the first place. New safety measures might include that foods are cooked at temperatures high enough to kill bacteria. Another may be to require the roasting of raw peanuts at a temperature guaranteed to kill salmonella, and roasted nuts would then have to be kept separate from raw nuts to further reduce the risk of contamination.”

Frozen Yogurt Pop

I found a great website to check out for recalls on foods, both for human and animal consumption, and for drug recalls. It is www.fda.gov .It is up to us to be vigilant as to what we put into us and into our pets bodies.

2 cups plain yogurt 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup low-sugar strawberry jam Put all ingredients in a medium bowl and beat with electric mixer at medium speed until frothy and well mixed, about 30 seconds. Pour into six 3-ounce paper cups and freeze about an hour. Insert wooden sticks into center of each cup and freeze until mixture is firm. Peel paper cups from yogurt pops before eating.

Dear Friends in Fishing, There was a discussion last week at the senior center as to how the center could make fishing more available to us seniors. Some of us no longer have boats, while others enjoy fishing from shore but have no means to access a spot. I'd like to propose a way to get us out there doing what we love. Forming a club take lots of time and work and many years -- why not join a club that already exists and has everything to offer that we're looking for? My name is Jesse, and I have been a member of the Yahara Fishing Club for about 4 years and I've met many new friends. I don't even own a boat, and yet I get more offers to go fishing, than I have time for. I have gone with the Yahara Fishing Club to Hudson for sturgeon, Lake Michigan for salmon, Green Bay for whitefish and many times for pan fish on the Madison lakes. I invite anyone who enjoys fishing to come and meet the folks at the Yahara Fishing Club and or the Badge Fly Fishers. If you miss getting out on the water and could use a fishing buddy or two, I think you'll find this could be the key to a great season. If you are interested in fishing, see the two websites listed below or contact the Senior Center to be put in touch with a volunteer. www.yaharafishingclub.org or badgerflyfishers.org

Theatre Trip Run For Your Wife July 25 We will be traveling to the Fireside Theatre to see this exciting performance. The bus will pick us up at 9:30 AM at the Stoughton Senior Center and the show will be at 1:30 PM. Cost is $89.00 for the bus, dinner and show. Call 873-8585 to sign up today. 6

Older American’s Month Every year since 1963, May has been a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions to our communities. The theme for Older Americans Month 2013, Unleash the Power of Age, has never been more fitting. Older Americans are productive, active, and influential members of society, sharing essential talents, wisdom, and life experience with their families, friends, and neighbors. This year, think about what your organization can do to help Unleash the Power of Age. Giving our elders opportunities to volunteer their time to support those who are less fortunate, to teach others the skills they’ve honed over the years, or to become involved in civic matters are just a few ways you can Unleash the Power of Age. Help our older Americans stay positive, active, and looking forward.
