Case Management Stoughton, Towns of Albion & Dunkirk The Case Management program links older adults with services available to help them remain as independent as possible in their homes and community. Our Senior Center’s case managers are devoted to coordinating, evaluating and advocating for such services to meet each individual’s needs and preferences.

Yesterday ! In 1975, the incidence rate for female breast cancer in the United States was 105 new cases diagnosed for every 100,000 women in the population; the mortality rate was 31 deaths for every 100,000 women. ! Among women diagnosed with breast cancer during the period from 1975 through 1977, about 75% survived their disease at least 5 years. Among white women, the 5-year relative survival rate was 76%; among African American women, it was 62%. ! Mastectomy was the only accepted surgical option for breast cancer treatment.

Today ! In 2007, the latest year for which we have updated statistics, the U.S. incidence rate for female breast cancer was approximately 125 new cases diagnosed for every 100,000 women in the population; the mortality rate was approximately 23 deaths for every 100,000 women. ! Among women diagnosed with breast cancer during the period from 1999 through 2006, 90% were expected to survive their disease at least 5 years.

Among white women, the 5-year relative survival rate was 91%; among African American women, it was 78%. The increase in breast cancer survival seen since the mid-1970s has been attributed to both screening and improved treatment.

Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) followed by local radiation therapy has replaced mastectomy as the preferred surgical approach for treating early-stage breast cancer.

Routine mammographic screening is an accepted standard for the early detection of breast cancer Combination chemotherapy is a standard of care in the adjuvant treatment of operable breast cancer. The goal of this systemic therapy is to eradicate cancer cells that may have spread beyond the breast.

A range of Hormonal therapies are now standard in treatment. A wealth of new scientific advancements in the area of genes and gene mutation form the basis for risk reduction therapies.

Tomorrow ! We will use our rapidly increasing knowledge in the fields of cancer genomics and cell biology to develop more effective and less toxic treatments for breast cancer and to improve our ability to identify cancers that are more likely to recur. Moreover, we will use this knowledge to tailor breast cancer therapy to the individual patient.

For example, gene expression analysis has led to the identification of five subtypes of breast cancer that have distinct biological features, clinical outcomes, and responses to chemotherapy. This knowledge can be exploited in the development of treatment strategies based on the specific characteristics of a woman’s tumor. ! We will use our increasing knowledge of the immune system to enhance the body’s ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells. The knowledge we have acquired thus far has facilitated the development of several promising breast cancer treatment vaccines that are currently under clinical evaluation.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers: • Screening Mammogram: Covered once every 12 months (11 full months must have passed since the last screening) ! Diagnostic Mammogram: Covered when medically necessary Eligibility: • Women with Medicare 40 or older are covered ! Women with Medicare between 35—39 can get one baseline mammogram Your costs in Original Medicare Screening Mammogram: You pay nothing for the test if the doctor accepts assignment Diagnostic Mammogram: You pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Anyone coping with, or caring for someone with a chronic condition or frailty knows this is not an easy card to be dealt.

Medicare Part D Open Enrollment October 15-December 7, 2012 Medicare Part D enrollment will run October 15 thru December 7, 2012. Older adults can get counseling and enroll through the assistance of the case managers at the Stoughton Senior Center. Additionally, we have trained volunteers who will also be assisting us with the search and enrollment process. Please call us at 873-8585 at the Stoughton Senior Center for any of your Medicare Part D questions. The Dane County Elder Benefit Specialists can also assist with Medicare Part D questions and enrollment. Call them 608-221-6102 or 608-221-6129 for more information. I&A has many forms: direct contact with staff, newsletter & website, educational events, health screens, support groups, equipment loan closet, computer lab and as space for other agencies to provide preventive community services. Whether you want to be proactive in facing what’s around the corner or feel overwhelmed with a current need, contacting your Senior Center is an important first step.

It’s Pumpkin Time!

The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene.

Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body.

Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and offers protection against heart disease, as well as some degenerative aspects of aging. *article provided by University of Illinois Extension*

NUTRITION PROGRAM INFORMATION All meals are provided by Dane County through Consolidated Food Services. They are packaged, delivered and served by Senior Center volunteers.

If you have special dietary needs, please call and talk with Lisa regarding your meal options.

Nutrition Site: The Senior Center serves lunch every weekday at 12:00 PM. See menu page 15.

Home Delivered Meals: Meal delivery is available to homebound older adults in the Stoughton Area School District every weekday.

Cost of Meals : Individuals 60 years or older pay by donation.

The minimum suggested donation is $3.00/ meal. Individuals under the age of 60 must pay the total cost of the meal. Meal Site: $6.15 Delivered Meal: $6.40.

Please be reminded that cancellations and reservations should be made by 1:00pm the previous working day. Any cancellations made on the day of, are still subject to payment to the county.

Mini Pumpkin Whoopie Pies Cookies: 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup butter, softened 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar 2 large eggs, room temp. lightly beaten 1 cup 100% pure pumpkin 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease or use parchment paper on 4 baking sheets.

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and salt in medium bowl. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Add pumpkin and vanilla extract; beat until smooth. Stir in flour mixture until combined. Drop by heaping measuring teaspoons onto prepared baking sheets. 72 cookies are needed.

Bake for 10-13 minutes or until springy to the touch. Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes; remove to wire racks and cool completely.

Cream cheese filling: 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 6 tablespoons softened butter ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 ½ cups powdered sugar Beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla extract in a small mixer bowl on medium until fluffy. Gradually beat in powered sugar until light and fluffy.

Spread a heaping teaspoon of filling onto flat side of one cookie; top with flat side of second cookie to make a sandwich. Repeat with remaining cookies and filling. Store in covered container in refrigerator. Makes 3 dozen mini pies.

Fitchburg Senior Center 5510 Lacy The Safe Communities Falls Prevention Task Force invites area seniors to a special workshop.

Falls are a major threat to an older adult’s independence, and in most cases they are preventable. This workshop will discuss and show participants actions that they can take to prevent falls. The cost for the workshop is $8.00, including a delicious lunch and a door prize for all.

Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation Grapevine Project Presents: Breast Cancer The goal is to help women and their families reach their healthiest potential and become advocates for their own health and improve the overall quality of life for women and their families.

One of the ways the WWHF works to accomplish these goals is by providing programs that focus on education, prevention, and early detection.

They will provide the following presentation at the Stoughton Senior Center October 25 @ 1:00 PM. Breast Cancer Information: Women receive information on breast cancer, learn how to perform breast exams, and how to identify lumps in the breast model. Breast exam shower cards, loofahs, and shower gels will be given.

A registered nurse works with participants to help them manage their pain, symptoms, medications, coordinate health care appointments, better understand their condition and more.
