THERAPEUTIC RECREATION Therapeutic Recreation (TR) is a treatment service designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate the activity limitations and restrictions to participation in life situations caused by an illness or disabling condition. Therapeutic Recreation may also be simply referred to as recreation therapy. Recreational therapists work with clients to restore motor, social and cognitive functioning, build confidence, develop coping skills, and integrate skills learned in treatment settings into community settings. Intervention areas vary widely and are based upon client interests. Examples of intervention modalities include creative arts (e.g., crafts, music, dance, drama, among others), sports, adventure programming, dance/movement, and leisure education. Maribel Bracke is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist working in Suffolk Parks and Recreation to serve as a resource and facilitator for our TR programs. She can be reached at 757-514-7264.

Last year over 1,515 volunteers donated over 9,998 hours with various city departments to make Suffolk a better place to live, work, and play. Contribute your time and talents while learning a new skill, advancing your career, staying active, and meeting new people. Volunteer as an individual or be part of a team effort on a one-day project or commit to an ongoing assignment. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities online by visiting www.suffolkva.us/ or by contacting our Volunteer Coordinator, Jason Pittman at jpittman@suffolkva.us or 757-514-7268.

CIT—Counselors in Training Each year, we provide opportunity for youth ages 1417 to join the parks and recreation team and learn how we operate and manage our programs. This opportunity is perfect for students looking to fulfill their service requirements for graduation. We are flexible with scheduling and location based on the needs of the departments and the needs of the applicants. These volunteers receive training and job descriptions that will allow them to provide community service and enhance their resumes. If you know of a teenager that is interested in completing volunteer hours, please be sure to contact our Volunteer Coordinator for more information.

Internships

Internships are available through Parks and Recreation. Contact Jason Pittman for more information. Internships provide students numerous perks: They gain experience, develop skills, make connections, strengthen their resumes, learn about a field, and assess their interest and abilities in the Parks and Recreation profession.
