Volunteer Parks and Recreation coordinates “Volunteer Suffolk” for all city departments. Become a volunteer and make a difference in our community! Last year volunteers contributed over 9000 hours with various city departments to make Suffolk a better place to live, work, and play. Contribute your time and talents while learning a new skill, advancing your career, staying active, and meeting new people. Volunteer as an individual, part of a team effort on a one-day project, or commit to an ongoing assignment. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities online by visiting www.suffolkva.us or by contacting our Volunteer Coordinator, Jason Pittman at jpittman@suffolkva.us or 757-514-7268.

Internships Suffolk Parks & Recreation internships are a customized experience for the selected interns. We work with our interns to create a well-rounded experience based on their interests, career goals, and the needs of the department. A typical internship will select a focus area but will also include exposure to the different divisions within the department. Our goal is to provide students with a broad knowledge and well-rounded experience that can position them for a career in the Parks & Recreation Field. Internships are available for students seeking course credit. We will work with the student to make sure our internships match the school’s curriculum and requirements. For more information contact Jason Pittman, Volunteer Coordinator at 757-514-7268. 34

“Ask questions before, during and stay in touch!”

Deja Patterson recounts her days as an intern with the City of Suffolk Parks and Recreation joyfully. She talks about coaching, administrative work, and how her internship aided her in finding a career after college. Deja’s internship met the requirements to complete her degree in Exercise, Sport & Health at Radford University. Deja was an intern in Athletics, Fitness, and Child Care within Parks and Recreation. Deja suggests to anyone participating in an internship, “ask questions all the time and take hold of the leadership opportunities.” The experience “as a whole” was the most valuable, according to her. As a student, she was able to attend the VRPS Management Conference. She stated that the experience gave her invaluable networking opportunities and skills she uses in her career today. Parks and Recreation offers internships in a variety of departments. If you are interested, contact Jason Pittman at jpittman@suffolkva.us.
