FROM THE DIRECTOR Fall is my favorite time of the year with the changing colors of leaves and the cooling of the breeze signaling that summer is gone. Fall also represents our department’s transition from summer camps to before and after school programs as well as the beginning of our youth indoor sports season. Our before and after school programs offer variety of activities and clubs where children can meet new friends and learn new things. Our award winning youth indoor sports leagues will keep youth active while teaching teamwork and good sportsmanship. The youth sports coaches are certified by the National Youth Sports Alliance and are committed to creating a positive environment for our young athletes. Coaches are always needed and we encourage you to volunteer your time to make a difference in a child’s life through sports. The Whaleyville Community Center and East Suffolk Recreation Center have expanded fitness classes increasing opportunities for health and wellness. Stop by and visit with our certified fitness specialists to learn more about the classes and how to increase your physical activity while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The fall is also a wonderful time to explore our parks and trails whether you are walking, running, canoeing, kayaking, or biking. The lakes at Lone Star and the launches at Sleepy Hole Park and Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina are great places to start an adventure. We here at Suffolk Parks and Recreation, invite you to fall into recreation! GENERAL INFORMATION

American sports culture has increasingly become a money making business. The highly stressful, competitive, "win at all costs" attitude prevalent at colleges and with professional athletes affects the world of children's sports and athletics; creating an unhealthy environment. It is important to remember that the attitudes and behavior taught to children in sports carry over to adult life. Parents should take an active role in helping their child develop good sportsmanship. To help your child get the most out of sports, you need to be actively involved. This includes:  providing emotional support and positive feedback,  attending some games and talking about them afterward,  having realistic expectations for your child,  learning about the sport and supporting your child's involvement,  helping your child talk with you about their experiences with the coach and other team members,  Helping your child handle disappointments and losing, and modeling respectful spectator behavior. Why do you need water? Water is important for most processes your body goes through in a day. When you drink water, you replenish your stores. Without enough water, your body and its organs can’t function properly. Benefits of drinking water include:

   

keeping your body temperature within a normal range lubricating and cushioning your joints protecting your spine and other tissues helping you eliminate waste through urine, sweat, and bowel movements

Drinking enough water can also help you look your best. For example, water keeps your skin looking healthy. Skin is your body’s largest organ. When you drink plenty of water, you keep it healthy and hydrated. And because water contains zero calories, water can be an excellent tool for managing your weight, as well. Therapeutic Recreation may also be simply referred to as recreation therapy. Recreational therapists work with clients to restore motor, social and cognitive functioning, build confidence, develop coping skills, and integrate skills learned in treatment settings into community settings. Intervention areas vary widely and are based upon client interests. Examples of intervention modalities include creative arts (e.g., crafts, music, dance, drama, among others), sports, adventure programming, dance/movement, and leisure education. Maribel Bracke is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist working in Suffolk Parks and Recreation to serve as a resource and facilitator for our TR programs. She can be reached at 757-514-7264.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION Suffolk Parks and Recreation promotes the Outdoors and Conservation through various programs, events, and our numerous beautiful parks! Connecting people to the outdoors is one of the key components in conservation. People who consistently use and enjoy our parks and outdoor spaces have a vested interest in the beauty and sustainability of our environment.

Suffolk Parks and Recreation runs several programs throughout the year to teach our youth about the importance of recycling and what items are acceptable in our blue recycling containers. Involving our youth early and getting them invested in the outdoors, conservation, and sustaining our environment will play a significant role in their continued involvement throughout life. The city also provides large recycling containers behind City Hall for those of you whose needs outgrow the curbside pickup offered to Suffolk residents every other week. The city also offers a community garden for those who would like to give their green thumb a shot and experience firsthand how you can grow your own food. Hard work pays off and you can enjoy the fruits of your labor at the end of the season. There is plenty of space, as well as tools and donated seeds, if you would like to give gardening a try.
